Dye-sensitized photoanode decorated with pyridine additives for efficient solar water oxidation

Highly Efficient Photoelectrochemical Alkene Epoxidation on a Dye-Sensitized Photoanode

In photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells, selective oxidation of organic substrates coupled with hydrogen evolution represents a promising approach for value-added chemical production and solar energy conversion. In this study, we report on PEC epoxidation of alkenes at a ruthenium dye-sensitized photoanode in a CH3CN/H2O mixed solvent with LiBr as a mediator and water as the oxygen source. The dye-sensitized photoanode was found to exhibit significant advantages in the simultaneous improvement of charge separation and suppression of charge recombination. First, LiBr as a redox mediator plays a critical role in charge separation, leading to an excellent excited electron injection efficiency of 95% and a high dye regeneration efficiency of 87%. Second, the predominant charge recombination pathway on the dye-sensitized photoanode is efficiently blocked by the reaction between alkene and the in situ generated bromine oxidant. As a result, the current system achieved a remarkable photocurrent density of over 4 mA cm-2 with a record-high incident photo-to-current efficiency (IPCE) of 51% and extraordinary selectivity of up to 99% for the epoxidation of a wide range of alkenes. Meanwhile, nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency for hydrogen evolution was obtained. The performance shown here exceeds that obtained by metal oxide-based semiconductor photoanodes under comparable conditions, demonstrating the great potential of dye-sensitized photoelectrodes for organic synthesis owing to their diversity and tunability.

Continuous Strain Regulation of Palladium-Gold at the Atomic Level

Revealing the effect of surface structure changes on the electrocatalytic performance is beneficial to the development of highly efficient catalysts. However, precise regulation of the catalyst surface at the atomic level remains challenging. Here, we present a continuous strain regulation of palladium (Pd) on gold (Au) via a mechanically controllable surface strain (MCSS) setup. It is found that the structural changes induced by the strain setup can accelerate electron transfer at the solid-liquid interface, thus achieving a significantly improved performance toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments further confirm that the enhanced activity is attributed to the increased interplanar spacing resulting from the applied strain. Theoretical calculations reveal that the tensile strain modulates the electronic structure of the Pd active sites and facilitates the desorption of the hydrogen intermediates. This work provides an effective approach for revealing the relationships between the electrocatalyst surface structure and catalytic activity.

Photoelectrochemical Cells with a Pyridine-Anchored Bilayer Photoanode for Water Splitting

A dye-sensitized photoanode is prepared by coassembling a Ru complex photosensitizer and a Ru water oxidation catalyst (WOC) on a TiO2 substrate, in which the WOC molecules are immobilized in a layer-by-layer fashion through metal-pyridine coordination with the aid of a bifunctional anchoring and bridging molecule containing multiple pyridine groups. Under visible-light irradiation, an anodic photocurrent of around 200 μA/cm2 has been achieved with O2 and H2 being generated at the photoanode and Pt counter electrode, respectively. The pyridine anchoring strategy provides a simple method to prepare photoelectrodes for applications in photoelectrochemical cells.

Ligands modification strategies for mononuclear water splitting catalysts

Artificial photosynthesis (AP) has been proved to be a promising way of alleviating global climate change and energy crisis. Among various materials for AP, molecular complexes play an important role due to their favorable efficiency, stability, and activity. As a result of its importance, the topic has been extensively reviewed, however, most of them paid attention to the designs and preparations of complexes and their water splitting mechanisms. In fact, ligands design and preparation also play an important role in metal complexes’ properties and catalysis performance. In this review, we focus on the ligands that are suitable for designing mononuclear catalysts for water splitting, providing a coherent discussion at the strategic level because of the availability of various activity studies for the selected complexes. Two main designing strategies for ligands in molecular catalysts, substituents modification and backbone construction, are discussed in detail in terms of their potentials for water splitting catalysts.

Photoelectrochemical water oxidation improved by pyridine N-oxide as a mimic of tyrosine-Z in photosystem II

Artificial photosynthesis provides a way to store solar energy in chemical bonds with water oxidation as a major challenge for creating highly efficient and robust photoanodes that mimic photosystem II. We report here an easily available pyridine N-oxide (PNO) derivative as an efficient electron transfer relay between an organic light absorber and molecular water oxidation catalyst on a nanoparticle TiO2 photoanode. Spectroscopic and kinetic studies revealed that the PNO/PNO+˙ couple closely mimics the redox behavior of the tyrosine/tyrosyl radical pair in PSII in improving light-driven charge separation via multi-step electron transfer. The integrated photoanode exhibited a 1 sun current density of 3 mA cm-2 in the presence of Na2SO3 and a highly stable photocurrent density of >0.5 mA cm-2 at 0.4 V vs. NHE over a period of 1 h for water oxidation at pH 7. The performance shown here is superior to those of previously reported organic dye-based photoanodes in terms of photocurrent and stability.

Impact of Iron in Three-Dimensional Co-MOF for Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

The integration of iron (Fe) into a cobalt metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) tunes the electronic structure of the parent MOF as well as enhances their electrocatalytic characteristics. By using pyrazine and hydrofluoric acid, we have synthesized three-dimensional Co-MOF [CoFC₄H₄N₂(SO₄)_0.5], (1), and Fe-MOF [FeFC₄H₄N₂(SO₄)_0.5], (2), through a single-step solvothermal method. Further, a series of bimetallic (having both Co and Fe metal centers) MOFs [Co_1-xFe_xFC₄H₄N₂(SO₄)_0.5] were synthesized with variable concentrations of Fe, and their electrocatalytic performances were analyzed. The optimized amount of Fe significantly impacted the electrocatalytic behavior of the bimetallic MOF toward water oxidation. Particularly, the Co_0.75Fe_0.25-MOF needs only 239 and 257 mV of overpotential to deliver 10 and 50 mA/cm² current density, respectively, in alkaline electrolytic conditions. The Co_0.75Fe_0.25-MOF shows a lower Tafel slope (42 mV/dec.) among other bimetallic MOFs and even the commercial RuO₂, and it has excellent durability (with ∼8 mV increases in overpotential after 18 h of electrolysis) and 97.05% Faradaic efficiency, which further evident its catalytic excellency. These findings explore the intrinsic properties of MOF-based electrocatalysts and prospect the suitability for future water electrolysis.
