Development of gold catalysts supported by unreducible materials: Design and promotions

Reaction-Driven Dynamic and Reversible Transformations of Au Single Atoms and Au-Zr Alloys on Zirconia for Efficient Acetylene Hydrochlorination

Catalysis involving gold supported on metal oxides has undergone extensive examination. However, the nature of the catalytic site under actual reaction conditions and the role of the support continue to be vigorously debated. This study addresses these issues through experimental investigations and theoretical simulations. We explore a novel catalytic mechanism that employs dynamic single-atom catalysis for the hydrochlorination of acetylene. This catalytic mechanism occurs in defective ZrO2-supported Au-Zr single-atom alloys. Specifically, the dynamic single-atom catalysis is a result of the mobility of the gold cation, which is accelerated by Cl radicals and strongly couples with the abundant unsaturated surface sites of ZrO2 in a synergistic manner. As a result, the Au electronic structure dynamically evolves, leading to a decrease in the addition reaction energy barrier. Notably, the Au cation can detach from the Au-Zr alloy structure to catalyze the hydrochlorination of acetylene near the Zr-Ov-Zr sites and then reintegrate back into the Au-Zr alloy structure upon completion of the reaction. This study underscores the significance of dynamic active sites under reaction conditions and their pivotal role in catalysis.

Effects of Various Ripening Media on the Mesoporous Structure and Morphology of Hydroxyapatite Powders

Mesoporous hydroxyapatite (HA) materials demonstrate advantages as catalysts and as support systems for catalysis, as adsorbent materials for removing contamination from soil and water, and as nanocarriers of functional agents for bone-related therapies. The present research demonstrates the possibility of the enlargement of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area (SSA), pore volume, and average pore diameter via changing the synthesis medium and ripening the material in the mother solution after the precipitation processes have been completed. HA powders were investigated via chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy. Their SSA, pore volume, and pore-size distributions were determined via low-temperature nitrogen adsorption measurements, the zeta potential was established, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was performed. When the materials were synthesized in water-ethanol and water-acetone media, the SSA and total pore volume were 52.1 m²g^-1 and 116.4 m²g^-1, and 0.231 and 0.286 cm³g^-1, respectively. After ripening for 21 days, the particle morphology changed, the length/width aspect ratio decreased, and looser and smaller powder agglomerates were obtained. These changes in their characteristics led to an increase in SSA for the water and water-ethanol samples, while pore volume demonstrated a multiplied increase for all samples, reaching 0.593 cm³g^-1 for the water-acetone sample.

Achieving acetone efficient deep decomposition by strengthening reactants adsorption and activation over difunctional Au(OH)Kx/hierarchical MFI catalyst

Realizing the simultaneous adsorption and activation of O₂ and reactants over supported noble metal catalysts is crucial for the oxidation of organic hydrocarbons. Herein, we report a facile one-step ethylene glycol reduction method to synthesize difunctional Au(OH)K_x sites, which were anchored on a hierarchical hollow MFI support and adopted for acetone decomposition. The alkali ion-associated adjacent surface hydroxyl groups were coordinated with Au nanoparticles, resulting in partially oxidized Au¹⁺ sites with improved dispersion. The results obtained from exclusive ex situ and in situ experiments illustrated that the proper content of K and hydroxyl groups significantly enhanced the adsorption of surface O₂ and acetone molecules around the Au sites simultaneously, whereas the excess K species inhibited the catalytic performance by blocking the pore structure and decreasing the acidity of catalysts. The Au(OH)K_0.7/h-MFI catalyst exhibited the highest efficiency for acetone oxidation, over which 1500 ppm acetone can be completely oxidized at just 280 °C with an extremely low activation energy of 32.5 kJ mol^-1. The carbonate species were detected as the main intermediates during acetone decomposition over the difunctional Au(OH)K_x sites through a Langmuir - Hinshelwood (L - H) mechanism. This finding paves the way for designing and constructing efficient functional active sites for the complete oxidation of hydrocarbons.

Boosting the catalytic behavior and stability of a gold catalyst with structure regulated by ceria

In this work, a series of colloidal gold nanoparticles with controllable sizes were anchored on carbon nanotubes (CNT) for the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol. The intrinsic influence of Au particles on the catalytic behavior was unraveled based on different nanoscale-gold systems. The Au/CNT-A sample with smaller Au sizes deserved a faster reaction rate, mainly resulting from the higher dispersion degree (23.5%) of Au with the available exposed sites contributed by small gold particles. However, monometallic Au/CNT samples lacked long-term stability. CeO2 was herein decorated to regulate the chemical and surface structure of the Au/CNT. An appropriate CeO2 content tuned the sizes and chemical states of Au by electron delivery with better metal dispersion. Small CeO2 crystals that were preferentially neighboring the Au particles facilitated the generation of Au-CeO2 interfaces, and benefited the continuous supplementation of oxygen species. The collaborative functions between the size effect and surface chemistry accounted for the higher benzaldehyde yield and sustainably stepped-up reaction rates by Au-Ce5/CNT with 5 wt% CeO2.

Enhancing the catalytic performance of PdAu catalysts by W-induced strong interaction for the direct synthesis of H2O2

W-Induced strong interaction with PdAu is the key to the enhanced catalytic performance for the direct synthesis of H2O2, with WO3 species partially encapsulating the PdAu particles.

Nano-Sized NiO Immobilized on Au/CNT for Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation: Influences of Hybrid Structure and Interface

Tiny gold nanoparticles were successfully anchored on carbon nanotubes (CNT) with NiO decoration by a two-step synthesis. Characterizations suggested that Ni species in an oxidative state preferred to be highly dispersed on CNT. During the synthesis, in situ reduction by NaBH₄ and thermal treatment in oxidation atmosphere were consequently carried out, causing the formation of Au-Ni-O_x interfaces and bimetal hybrid structure depending on the Ni/Au atomic ratios. With an appropriate Ni/Au atomic ratio of 8:1, Ni atoms migrated into the sub-layers of Au particles and induced the lattice contraction of Au particles, whilst a higher Ni/Au atomic ratio led to the accumulation of NiO fractions surrounding Au particles. Both contributed to the well-defined Au-Ni-O_x interface and accelerated reaction rates. Nickel species acted as structure promoters with essential Au-Ni-O_x hybrid structure as well as the active oxygen supplier, accounting for the enhanced activity for benzyl alcohol oxidation. However, the over-layer of unsaturated gold sites easily occured under a high Ni/Au ratio, resulting in a lower reaction rate. With an Au/Ni atomic ratio of 8:1, the specific rate of AuNi₈/CNT reached 185 μmol/g/s at only 50 °C in O₂ at ordinary pressure.
