One-pot synthesis of mesosilica/nano covalent organic polymer composites and their synergistic effect in photocatalysis

Low-temperature synthesis of porous organic polymers with donor-acceptor structure and β-ketoenamine for photocatalytic oxidative coupling of amines

In light of the widespread use of fossil fuels and the resulting environmental pollution, it is crucial to develop efficient photocatalysts for renewable energy applications that utilize visible light. Organic photocatalysts based on β-ketoenamine offer several advantages, including facile preparation, high stability, structural controllability, and excellent photovoltaic properties. However, in previous studies, the synthesis of porous organic polymers (POPs) often involved long, high-temperature processes. In this study, POPs with donor (D)-acceptor (A) structure were constructed by utilizing various branched bridging groups and 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol, across multiple temperature gradients. Through adjustments in hydrothermal temperature, we successfully synthesized a series of POPs with varying enol-keto structure ratios. Among these POPs, the dimethoxybenzidine-POPs (DMDPOPs) with methoxy electron-rich branched chains exhibited superior photovoltaic performance, electron transfer rate, and photocatalytic activity compared to the dihydroxybenzidine-POPs (DHDPOPs) with electron-deficient hydroxyl branched chains. Notably, DMDPOP-30 demonstrated outstanding performance, achieving a conversion rate of 98% within 3 h. Additionally, other POPs exhibited favorable conversions (90%), further confirming the feasibility of this synthetic approach. Moreover, the synthesis of DMDPOP-30 was achieved under mild conditions at room temperature, highlighting its significant potential for practical applications.

Rice husk biochar mediated red phosphorus for photocatalysis and photothermal removal of E. coli

The current photocatalytic bactericidal materials in the field of food pathogen control are usually consisted of metals that always suffering from poor stability and possible secondary pollution. Besides, the requirement for high energy excitation also inspires the enthusiasm on exploring non-metallic catalysts. Herein, the non-metallic composite of rice shell biochar loaded with red phosphorus (B@RP) was developed for photocatalysis and photothermal removal of bacteria. The B@RP showed effective photocatalysis performance to stimulate the generation of OH and O₂^- free radicals for the elimination of Escherichia coli (E. coli). At the same time, the photothermal effect of B@RP can also increase the permeability of cell membrane, which is conducive to free radicals entering the cell interior. Therefore, the non-metallic composite could achieve complete removal of E. coli within 2 h under illumination. Meanwhile, B@RP had excellent stability and the sterilization efficiency maintained 100% after 9 cycles. Hence, B@RP is expected to be a harmless and efficient bactericidal material for food industry.

Polymer Composite-Based Materials with Photocatalytic Applications in Wastewater Organic Pollutant Removal: A Mini Review

The development of new technologies using nanomaterials has allowed scientists to design advanced processes with many applications in environmental protection, energy production and storage, and medicinal bio-mediated processes. Due to their significant potential applications in different branches of science, the development of new polymer composites represents a priority, especially for nano-technological processes. Interest in polymeric composites was outlined by the synthesis of a large number of nano- or mezzo-scale materials with targeted functional properties for polymer matrix hybridization. The present mini review explores some of the most representative and recent papers reporting the photocatalytic activity of polymer composites toward different organic compounds (dyes, pharmaceutically active molecules, phenol, etc.). The polymer composites were divided based on their composition and photocatalytic activity. TiO₂- and ZnO-based polymeric composites have been described here in light of their photocatalytic activity toward different pollutants, such as rhodamine B, phenol, or methyl orange. Polymeric composites based on WO₃, Fe₂O₃, or Bi₂MoO₆ were also described. The influence of different polymeric composites and photocatalytic parameters (light spectra and intensity, pollutant molecule and concentration, irradiation time, and photocatalyst dosage) on the overall photocatalytic efficiency indicates that semiconductor (TiO₂, ZnO, etc.) insertion in the polymeric matrix can tune the photocatalytic activity without compromising the structural integrity. Future perspectives and limitations are outlined considering the systematic and targeted description of the reported results. Adopting green route synthesis and application can add economic and scientific value to the knowledgebase by promoting technological development based on photocatalytic designs.

Covalent organic frameworks with high quantum efficiency in sacrificial photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Organic semiconductors offer a tunable platform for photocatalysis, yet the more difficult exciton dissociation, compared to that in inorganic semiconductors, lowers their photocatalytic activities. In this work, we report that the charge carrier lifetime is dramatically prolonged by incorporating a suitable donor-acceptor (β-ketene-cyano) pair into a covalent organic framework nanosheet. These nanosheets show an apparent quantum efficiency up to 82.6% at 450 nm using platinum as co-catalyst for photocatalytic H₂ evolution. Charge carrier kinetic analysis and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy characterizations verify that these modified covalent organic framework nanosheets have intrinsically lower exciton binding energies and longer-lived charge carriers than the corresponding nanosheets without the donor-acceptor unit. This work provides a model for gaining insight into the nature of short-lived active species in polymeric organic photocatalysts.
