Current observation on Aedes mosquitoes: A survey on implication of dengue infection, human lifestyle and preventive measure among Malaysia resident in urban and sub-urban areas

Evaluation of the mosquito larvicidal potential and comparative assessment of the juice of Lantana camara Linn and Ocimum gratissimum Linn

In the present study, the larvicidal efficacy of the juices of the weeds Lantana camara Linn (L. camara) and Ocimum gratissimum Linn (O. gratissimum) was evaluated against the larvae of the malaria vectors Aedes aegypti, Anopheles subpictus and Culex quinquefasciatus. The freshly prepared juices of leaves were prepared by grinding them and diluting them at concentrations of 25, 50, 75, and 100 ppm. Twenty larvae of each species were introduced in different sterile Petri dishes in aqueous media under a controlled environment for the assessment of biological activity. The larvicidal activity of both juices was evaluated at 6, 12 and 24 hr post-exposure time points by observing the movement of each larva. The obtained data were subjected to probit analysis to determine the lethal concentrations that kill 50% and 90% (LC50 and LC90) of the treated larvae. The results revealed a noticeable larvicidal activity following 24 h of exposure. The juice of L. camara leaves exhibited an LC50 range of 47.47-52.06 ppm and an LC90 range of 104.33-106.70 ppm. Moreover, for the juice of O. gratissimum leaves, the LC50 range was 42.94-44.91 ppm and the LC90 range was 105.11-108.66 ppm. Taken together, the results indicate that the juices of L. camara and O. gratissimum leaves may be useful as effective, economical and eco-friendly larvicidal agents. However, additional studies are needed to explore the bioactive components of the weeds that exhibit larvicidal activity along with their mode of action.

Different Domains of Dengue Research in Malaysia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Questionnaire-Based Studies

This review provided a systematic overview of the questionnaire-related dengue studies conducted in Malaysia and evaluated their reliability and validity used in the questionnaires. An extensive literature search was conducted using various electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, and ScienceDirect. Systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) were selected as the preferred item reporting method. Out of 88 identified dengue-related, 57 published from 2000 to April 2020 met the inclusion criteria and were included. Based on the meta-analysis, a poor mean score was obtained for knowledge (49%), attitude (44%), and preventive practice (55%). The study showed that the level of knowledge on cardinal signs and modes of transmission for dengue virus were highest among health care workers, followed by students (international and local) and lastly community residents. In treatment-seeking behaviours, only half of the respondents (50.8%) would send their child to the nearest health clinics or hospitals when a child became restless or lethargic. The acceptance rate for dengue vaccine, bacteria (Wolbachia), as a vector for dengue control and self-test diagnostic kit for dengue showed considerably high (88.4%, 70%, and 44.8%, respectively). Health belief model (HBM) constructs, such as perceived barriers, perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, self-efficacy, and perceived benefit influence prevention practices. Lastly, only 23 articles (40.3%) had piloted or pretested the questionnaire before surveying, in which three reported Cronbach's alpha coefficient (0.70-0.90). A need for active participation of communities and healthcare personnel, promotion of awareness, and safe complementary medicines, as well as assessment of psychometric properties of questionnaire use in dengue surveys in Malaysia, in order for assessing dengue reliably and valid.

The Impact of Sociological and Environmental Factors for Dengue Infection in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

BACKGROUND

Dengue incidence has grown dramatically around the world in recent years. Vector control is the only method to reduce dengue incidence due to the lack of a vaccine available. By understanding the factors contributed to the vector densities such as environmental and sociological factors, dengue prevention and control may succeed.

OBJECTIVE

This study is aimed at determining the impact of sociological and environmental factors contributing to dengue cases.

METHODS

The study surveyed 379 respondents with dengue history. The socio-environmental factors were evaluated by chi-square and binary regression.

RESULT

The chi-square results revealed sociological factors associated between family with dengue experience such as older age (p =0.012), fewer than four people in the household (p= 0.008), working people (p= 0.004) and apartment/terrace houses (p=0.023). Similarly, there is a significant association between respondent's dengue history and houses that are shaded with vegetation (p= 0.012) and the present of public playground areas near the residential (p = 0.011).

CONCLUSION

The study identified socio-environmental factors that play an important role in the abundance of Aedes mosquitoes and also for the local dengue control measures.
