Abstract
BACKGROUND Pediatric migraines are primarily treated with medications. However, recognizing the triggers related to patient behaviors and lifestyle is also important. PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the factors that trigger pediatric migraines. METHODS This study included 102 pediatric patients with migraine diagnosed using the third edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders who visited our pediatric headache clinic between November 2021 and October 2022. We reviewed the patients' clinical features, imaging studies, screening tests for behaviors and emotions, and questionnaires regarding triggers. Statistical analyses were performed using the independent sample Student t test and linear-by-linear association test. RESULTS The 102 patients (44 males, 58 females; mean age, 12.0±2.9 years) were classified into migraine without aura (n=58) and migraine with aura (n=44) groups. Sleep disturbances were the most frequent trigger (76.5%). Other triggers included academic stress (66.7%), motion sickness (62.7%), and fatigue (52.9%). Academic stress was the most significant trigger for pain severity in 44.1% of patients. Abnormal behavioral or psychiatric assessment results were associated with a higher number of triggers. CONCLUSION This study identified sleep disturbance and academic stress as common triggers of pediatric migraine, with academic stress being the most intense. Clinicians should understand these triggers and advise patients to avoid them by changing their lifestyles, if possible.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to explore the longitudinal relationship between anxiety and depressive symptoms and migraine outcomes in children and adolescents. BACKGROUND Children and adolescents with migraine experience more anxiety and depressive symptoms than their peers without migraine, but it is unknown if these symptoms are associated with differential migraine outcomes. METHODS In this prospective clinical cohort study, children and adolescents aged 8.0-18.0 years with migraine completed headache questionnaires and validated measures of anxiety and depressive symptoms (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System) at an initial consultation and at their first follow-up visit with a neurologist. Changes in monthly headache frequency and changes in migraine-related disability (Pediatric Migraine Disability Assessment) were tracked at each time point. The relationships between these migraine outcomes and anxiety and depressive symptoms were estimated using models controlling for sex, age, headache frequency, and treatment type. RESULTS There were 123 consenting participants. In models adjusted for age, sex, baseline disability score, and treatment type, baseline anxiety and depressive symptom levels were not significantly associated with change in headache frequency (for anxiety symptoms: β = -0.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -0.268 to 0.166, p = 0.639; for depressive symptoms: β = 0.14, 95% CI = -0.079 to 0.359, p = 0.209). Similarly, in models adjusted for age, sex, baseline headache frequency, and treatment type, the change in disability was not associated with baseline anxiety (β = -0.45, 95% CI = -1.69 to 0.78, p = 0.470), nor with baseline depressive symptom scores (β = 0.16, 95% CI = -1.07 to 1.40, p = 0.796). In post hoc exploratory analyses (N = 84 with anxiety and N = 82 with depressive symptom data at both visits), there were also no significant associations between change in mental health symptoms and change in headache frequency (for anxiety symptoms: β = -0.084, 95% CI = -0.246 to 0.078, p = 0.306; for depressive symptoms: β = -0.013, 95% CI = -0.164 to 0.138, p = 0.865). Similarly, the change in disability scores between visits was not related to the change in anxiety (β = 0.85, 95% CI = -0.095 to 1.78, p = 0.077) nor depressive symptom scores (β = 0.32, 95% CI = -0.51 to 1.15, p = 0.446). CONCLUSION Baseline anxiety and depressive symptom levels were not associated with longitudinal migraine outcomes and neither were longitudinal changes in anxiety and depressive symptom levels; this contradicts popular clinical belief that mental health symptoms predict or consistently change in tandem with migraine outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine if the ages at pubertal milestones are associated with the prevalence of adolescent migraine. BACKGROUND Migraine headaches are a common disease in adolescent girls. Past studies have evaluated the relationship between age of onset of menarche and migraine headache, but none have studied earlier pubertal milestones such as thelarche and pubarche. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, a previously validated questionnaire was administered to girls (15-18 years) in Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program puberty cohort to ascertain if they met criteria for migraine over the past year. Ages of pubertal development were ascertained by serial examinations beginning at 6-8 years of age and ending in late puberty. Logistic regression analyses determined if age of onset of each pubertal milestone (thelarche, pubarche, menarche separately) was associated with adolescent migraine after adjusting for other risk factors. RESULTS Of 761girls, 222 (29.2%) met the criteria for migraine. Later thelarche was associated with a lower odds of adolescent migraine (OR 0.83; 95% CI 0.72-0.97, p = 0.019). In models further adjusted for BASC-2 internalizing problems (n = 490), both later thelarche (OR 0.78; 95% CI 0.64-0.96, p = 0.016) and later menarche (OR 0.81; 95%CI 0.67-0.98, p = 0.026) were associated with a lower migraine prevalence. Internalizing problems (OR 1.05; 95% CI 1.03-1.07) externalizing problems (OR 1.05; 95% CI 1.02-1.07) and behavioral symptoms (OR 1.05; 95% CI 1.03-1.08) were associated with increased prevalence of migraine in separate models. CONCLUSIONS Age of onset of thelarche and menarche, and internalizing, externalizing, and behavioral symptoms were all associated with adolescent migraine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities associated with migraine increases the risk of evolution from episodic migraine to chronic migraine. This study investigated the effects of eight weeks of aerobic exercise and vitamin D supplementation on psychiatric comorbidities in men with migraine and vitamin D insufficiency. METHODS Forty-eight participants took part in this randomized controlled clinical trial and were allocated into four groups: aerobic exercise and vitamin D (AE + VD), aerobic exercise and placebo (AE + Placebo), vitamin D (VD), and Placebo. AE + VD and AE + Placebo groups performed three aerobic exercise sessions per week for eight weeks and received a vitamin D supplement and placebo, respectively. The VD group received a vitamin D supplement, and the Placebo group received a placebo for eight weeks. The depression severity, quality of sleep, and physical self-concept were measured at baseline and after eight weeks. RESULTS The results showed that depression severity was significantly lower in AE + VD compared to AE + Placebo, VD, and Placebo at the post-test. Our results demonstrated that in the post-test, the mean score of sleep quality in AE + VD was significantly lower than AE + Placebo, VD, and Placebo. Finally, the results revealed that after eight weeks of intervention, the physical self-concept in AE + VD was significantly higher than in VD and Placebo groups. LIMITATIONS Not having complete control of sun exposure and the diet were the limitations. CONCLUSION The results indicated that the concomitant application of AE and VD supplementation could provoke synergistic effects leading to additional psycho-cognitive health benefits in men with migraine and vitamin D insufficiency.

Religion/Spirituality, Mental Health, and the Lifespan: Findings from a Representative Sample of Canadian Adults. Can J Aging 2023; 42:115-125. Abstract
Theories of adult development and aging suggest that older adults turn towards religion and spirituality (R/S) to increase meaning and purpose in life, and to assist in coping with adverse experience. We sought to examine the relationship between R/S and positive mental health and mental illness (i.e., psychological distress) in adulthood, and to determine the potential moderating role of age. Data from the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey - Mental Health (CCHS-MH), a national population health study, were used. A multivariable linear regression model revealed a significant R/S by age interaction for positive mental health (p = 0.001). Although R/S was associated with positive mental health among all participants, there was a stronger relationship between R/S and positive mental health for older adults. No statistically significant relationship between R/S and psychological distress was observed. Findings highlight the importance of R/S to positive mental health across the adult lifespan. The differential relationships among R/S, positive mental health, and mental illness underscore the utility of using the dual-continua of mental health and mental illness in order to understand their respective determinants.

Abstract
Importance Though it is presumed that children and adolescents with migraine are at risk of internalizing symptoms and disorders, high-level summative evidence to support this clinical belief is lacking. Objective To determine if there is an association between internalizing symptoms and disorders and migraine in children and adolescents. Data Sources A librarian-led, peer-reviewed search was performed using MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases (inception to March 28, 2022). Study Selection Case-control, cohort, and cross-sectional studies on the association between internalizing symptoms and disorders and migraine in children and adolescents 18 years or younger were eligible. Data Extraction and Synthesis Two investigators independently completed abstract and full-text screening, data extraction, and quality appraisal using the Newcastle-Ottawa scales. Studies were pooled with random-effects meta-analyses using standardized mean differences (SMD) or odds ratios (OR) with 95% CIs. Where sufficient data for pooling were unavailable, studies were described qualitatively. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was migraine diagnosis; additional outcomes included migraine outcomes and incidence. Associations between these outcomes and internalizing symptoms and disorders were evaluated. Results The study team screened 4946 studies and included 80 studies in the systematic review. Seventy-four studies reported on the association between internalizing symptoms and disorders and migraine, and 51 studies were amenable to pooling. Meta-analyses comparing children and adolescents with migraine with healthy controls showed: (1) an association between migraine and anxiety symptoms (SMD, 1.13; 95% CI, 0.64-1.63); (2) an association between migraine and depressive symptoms (SMD, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.46-0.87); and (3) significantly higher odds of anxiety disorders (OR, 1.93, 95% CI, 1.49-2.50) and depressive disorders (OR, 2.01, 95% CI, 1.46-2.78) in those with, vs without, migraine. Stratification of results did not reveal differences between clinical vs community/population-based samples and there was no evidence of publication bias. Twenty studies assessing the association between internalizing symptoms or disorders and migraine outcomes (n = 18) or incident migraine (n = 2) were summarized descriptively given significant heterogeneity, with minimal conclusions drawn. Conclusions and Relevance In this study, children and adolescents with migraine were at higher risk of anxiety and depression symptoms and disorders compared with healthy controls. It may be beneficial to routinely screen children and adolescents with migraine for anxiety and depression in clinical practice. It is unclear whether having anxiety and depressive symptoms or disorders has an affect on migraine outcomes or incidence.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to examine the association between headache and mental disorders in a nationally representative sample of American youth. We used the National Comorbidity Survey-Adolescent Supplement to assess sex-specific prevalence of lifetime migraine and non-migraine headache using modified International Headache Society criteria and examine associations between headache subtypes and DSM-IV mental disorders. Adolescent report (n = 10,123) was used to identify headache subtypes and anxiety, mood, eating, and substance use disorders. ADHD and behavior disorder were based on parent report (n = 6483). Multivariate logistic regression analyses controlling for key demographic characteristics were used to examine associations between headache and mental disorders. Headache was endorsed by 26.9% (SE = 0.7) of the total sample and was more prevalent among females. Youth with headache were more than twice as likely (OR 2.74, 95% CI 1.94-3.83) to meet criteria for a DSM-IV disorder. Migraine, particularly with aura, was associated with depression and anxiety (adjusted OR 1.90-2.90) and with multiple classes of disorders. Adolescent headache, particularly migraine, is associated with anxiety, mood, and behavior disorders in a nationally representative sample of US youth. Headache is highly prevalent among youth with mental disorders, and youth with headache should be assessed for comorbid depression and anxiety that may influence treatment, severity, and course of both headache and mental disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the associations between psychopathological characteristics of children and adolescents with primary headache, as measured by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and treatment outcomes. METHODS A cohort study was conducted on 124 pediatric patients with primary headache. At the first consultation, the SDQ was completed by the parents. The analysis of treatment efficacy was conducted on 90 patients with a follow-up period of at least one year. Treatment responders were defined as those who showed 50% reduction in the headache frequency. First, an analysis of the SDQ total scores and five subscales, among the migraine and tension-type headache groups, was conducted for 124 participants. Second, the association between the SDQ scores and treatment outcomes in the groups with periods of improvement of less than three months and three months or more were analyzed in 90 patients. RESULTS Migraine patients displayed more difficulties than strengths in terms of the total score (p = .004) and in the emotional symptoms subscale (p = .012) compared with tension-type headache patients. Migraine patients who required more than three months to show improvement displayed more peer problems (p = .020), while tension-type headache patients who required more than three months to show improvement displayed fewer conduct problems (p = .007). CONCLUSION Evaluation of patient characteristics using the SDQ at first consultation can predict the treatment outcome. Moreover, it can help provide appropriate initial treatment and improve outcome of primary headache in children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Headaches are a common symptom in children. Children with refractory headaches may be admitted for inpatient treatment with intravenous dihydroergotamine mesylate (DHE). However, very few studies have characterized these patients and their treatment outcomes using validated, self-reported, pain scales. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to describe demographic and clinical characteristics of children admitted for DHE infusion, determine DHE treatment outcomes by means of numeric pain scale ratings, and explore associations between treatment outcomes and clinical characteristics. METHODS Retrospective chart review was completed in patients ages 5-21 admitted for DHE infusion from January 2013 to July 2018 at a large, pediatric academic medical center and community-based satellite center. All primary headache types were included. RESULTS A total of 200 unique admissions for DHE were available for analysis. Overall, patients were predominantly White (87.5%, 175/200) and female (80.0%, 160/200) with an average age of 15.4 years (SD 2.3). Common comorbidities included obesity (42.0%, 81/193), anxiety (41.0%, 82/200), and depression (20.0%, 40/200). The mean length of stay was 2.4 days (SD 1.10; range 1-8 days). Most headaches (65.0%, 130/200) met the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3rd edition criteria for migraine, followed by new daily persistent headache (25.5%, 51/200). Mean DHE maximum dose was 5.3 (SD 2.17; range 0.5-14.5 mg) with most patients requiring 3.5-6.5 mg. DHE was typically terminated at six doses (range 1-15). The most frequently reported adverse event was nausea (5.5%, 11/200). There was no difference in pain severity at admission across headache types, with an average baseline pain score of 8.1 (SD 1.6). Posttreatment reduction in pain score was statistically significant (range: -3.2 to -4.9; each p < 0.001) across all headache types. Overall, 84.0% (168/200) of the patients had some improvement in pain. More than half of the patients (53.5%, 107/200) showed at least moderate improvement (≥50.0% reduction in pain score), and 18.0% (36/200) had full headache resolution. Limited patients (16.0%, 32/200) experienced no improvement in pain. CONCLUSIONS Treatment with DHE resulted in at least some improvement for most patients regardless of headache type or number of doses. Clinical trials stratified by headache type and comorbid factors could help clarify treatment algorithms to optimize patient outcomes.

Abstract
Migraine is one of the most prevalent headache disorders in children and negatively influences their quality of life. Physical, social, and school functioning are negatively affected. Mood changes are common in migraineurs and may happen before, during, or after a migraine headache. Children with migraine are not exempt from mood swings. The majority of mood changes occur during the prodromal phase, manifesting as a psychobiological response, e.g., difficulty thinking, trouble concentrating, irritability, higher or lower energy, confusion, and depression. A bi-directional relationship between migraine and mood has been proposed, but mechanisms are not clear. Collectively, a maladaptive stress response has been suggested to explain the inability to balance homoeostatic changes when facing various stressors. Recognizing mood changes and monitoring mood patterns in children with migraine, for example, by various apps and so-called mood monitors, is valuable for better management. A multidisciplinary intervention has been recommended to reduce migraine disability, improve coping strategies, and reduce chronification risks in children with migraine. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies are both available and effective. Biofeedback, relaxation, and cognitive-behavioral therapy yield positive outcomes in pediatric migraine. Developing healthy lifestyle habits (diet, exercise, sleep) also seems to improve migraine in this population.

Abstract
Although migraines are common in children and adolescents, they have a robustly negative impact on the quality of life of individuals and their families. The current treatment guidelines outline the behavioral and lifestyle interventions to correct common causative factors, such as negative emotional states, lack of exercise and sleep, and obesity; however, the evidence of their effectiveness is insufficient. To create a plan for disseminating optimal pediatric headache education, we reviewed the current evidence for factors correlated with migraine. We assessed three triggers or risk factors for migraines in children and adolescents: stress, sleep poverty, and alimentation (including diet and obesity). While there is a gradual uptick in research supporting the association between migraine, stress, and sleep, the evidence for diet-related migraines is very limited. Unless obvious dietary triggers are defined, clinicians should counsel patients to eat a balanced diet and avoid skipping meals rather than randomly limiting certain foods. We concluded that there is not enough evidence to establish a headache education plan regarding behavioral and lifestyle interventions. Clinicians should advise patients to avoid certain triggers, such as stress and sleep disorders, and make a few conservative dietary changes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cephalalgia is one of the most common somatic complaints related to health problems in childhood and adolescence. OBJECTIVE To measure the cephalalgia prevalence in adolescents from the city of São Paulo, Brazil, and associated factors. METHODS This is a cross-sectional population-based study, carried out in 2015, with 539 adolescents of both sexes, aged between 15 and 19 years. The information was collected in a household survey, and the participants were selected from probabilistic sampling. Frequencies, χ2 test and logistic regression analysis were used in the study, and significance level was 5%. RESULTS the estimated prevalence of cephalalgia was 38.2% (95%CI 33.8 - 42.7), and 7.8% (95%CI 5.6 - 10.7), migraine. The associated factors for cephalalgia were: female sex (OR = 2.2; 95%CI 1.4 - 3.4), Common Mental Disorder (OR = 2.8; 95%CI 1.7 - 4.9), vision impairment (OR = 2.6; 95%CI 1.6 - 4.2), besides back pain (OR = 2.2; 95%CI 1.3 - 3.5), sinusitis (OR = 2.0; 95%CI 1.2 - 3.4) and incomplete elementary education (OR = 3.0; 95%CI 1.6 - 5.6). CONCLUSION The prevalence of headache among adolescents in the city of São Paulo represented more than 1/3 (one third) of this population. The main associated factors were sex, low schooling and the following comorbidities: common mental disorder and vision impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Headache disorders are highly prevalent worldwide, but not so well investigated in children and adolescents as in adults: few studies have included representative nationwide samples. No data exist for Austria until now. In a representative sample of children and adolescents in Austria, we estimated the prevalence and attributable burden of headache disorders, including the new diagnostic category of "undifferentiated headache" (UdH) defined as mild headache lasting less than 1 hour. METHODS Within the context of a broader national mental health survey, children and adolescents aged 10-18 years were recruited from purposively selected schools. Mediated self-completed questionnaires included sociodemographic enquiry (gender, age, socioeconomic status, family constellation, residence [urban or rural] and migration background). Prevalence and attributable burden of all headache, UdH, migraine (definite plus probable), tension-type headache (TTH: definite plus probable) and headache on ≥15 days/month (H15+) were assessed using the Headache-Attributed Restriction, Disability, Social Handicap and Impaired Participation (HARDSHIP) questionnaire for children and adolescents. Health-related quality of life (HrQoL) was assessed using the KIDSCREEN questionnaire. RESULTS Of 7643 selected pupils, 3386 (44.3%) completed the questionnaires. The 1-year prevalence of headache was 75.7%, increasing with age and higher in girls (82.1%) than in boys (67.7%; p < 0.001). UdH, migraine, TTH and H15+ were reported by 26.1%, 24.2%, 21.6% and 3.0% of participants. Attributable burden was high, with 42% of those with headache experiencing restrictions in daily activities. Medication use (50% overall) was highest in H15+ (67%) and still considerable in UdH (29%). HrQoL was reduced for all headache types except UdH. Participants in single parent or patchwork families had a higher probability of migraine (respectively, OR 1.5, p < 0.001; OR 1.5, p < 0.01). Participants with a migration background had a lower probability of TTH (OR 0.7, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Headache disorders are both very common and highly burdensome in children and adolescents in Austria. This study contributes to the global atlas of headache disorders in these age groups, and corroborates and adds knowledge of the new yet common and important diagnostic category of UdH. The findings call for action in national and international health policies, and for further epidemiological research.

Abstract
This article outlines key features of diagnosis and treatment of migraine in children and adolescents. It emphasizes techniques that can be used by clinicians to optimize history taking in this population, as well as recognition of episodic conditions that may be associated with migraine and present in childhood. Acute treatment strategies include use of over-the-counter analgesics and triptan medications that have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in children and adolescents. Preventive treatment approach includes lifestyle modifications, behavioral strategies, and consideration of preventive medications with the lowest side effect profiles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Approximately 10% of pediatric patients have recurrent headaches, with migraine being the most common headache type. If untreated, migraine may progress to status migrainosus, a debilitating condition of prolonged duration, high pain severity, and significant disability. There is high variability in the treatment of status migrainosus including medications used and treatment setting, which may occur in the emergency room, as an inpatient admission, or, less often, in an outpatient infusion center. The paucity of research on the treatment of status migrainosus is a limitation to treatment effectiveness. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was twofold. First, we sought to examine the demographic characteristics of children and adolescents accessing our outpatient infusion center for prolonged headache. Second, we sought to determine whether any demographic or psychosocial differences exist between patients who access infusion therapy compared to patients who do not access infusion therapy for their headaches. METHODS We conducted a retrospective chart review of all patients between the ages of 6 and 19 years who were treated in our outpatient headache infusion center. A subset of these patients completed a behavioral health evaluation (treatment group) and they were compared to a control group of similar age (birthdate within 6 months) and gender to patients not seeking infusion treatment. Variables of interest included patient demographics, headache type and characteristics, and scores on the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), Functional Disability Inventory (FDI), Pediatric Pain Coping Inventory (PPCI), and the Behavior Assessment System for Children - Second Edition (BASC-2). RESULTS A total of 284 patients were included in the study (n = 227 receiving infusion treatment and n = 57 controls). Patients were primarily female (224/286; 78.9%), Caucasian (254/286; 90.1%), and had a mean age of 15 years. Findings suggest a promising difference in the PPCI Distraction subscale, χ2 (1) = 3.7, P = .054, with a mean rank score of 61.90 for the treatment group and 50.21 for the control group. Additionally, a statistically significant difference was noted on the Social Support subscale, χ2 (1) = 10.6, P = .001, with a mean rank score of 65.92 for the treatment group and 46.26 for the control group. Results also indicated a statistically significant difference in disability scores, χ2 (1) = 10.0, P = .002, with a mean rank FDI score of 66.83 for the treatment group and 47.34 for the control group. Patients in the infusion group also reported lower quality of life on the PedsQL Total score (F[1, 109] = 5.0, P = .028; partial η2 = 0.044), and on the Physical (F[1, 109] = 7.9, P = .006; partial η2 = 0.069) and School (F[1, 109] = 4.6, P = .035; partial η2 = 0.041) subscales. No significant differences were found on the BASC-2. Parent reported data also revealed a significantly higher level of disability among patients seeking infusion treatment compared to the non-infusion group χ2 (1) = 11.7, P = .001. However, there were no significant differences on the PedsQL, PPCI, or BASC-2. CONCLUSIONS Our findings support the disabling nature of migraine among children and adolescents, with higher levels of disability and lower quality of life reported in the group of patients utilizing infusion treatment. Developing concrete treatment plans and goals combined with bio-behavioral therapy are necessary to reduce functional disability and increase quality of life among these patients. Awareness of this patient group's pain-related coping strategies may help health care providers tailor treatment recommendations and develop or refine cognitive-behavioral headache treatment techniques.

Abstract
The literature examining primary headache, including migraine, in adolescents, has pointed out the key role played by a wide range of psychiatric disorders in reducing the patients’ quality of life. Moreover, pioneering studies showed that preexisting personality characteristics, specific emotion regulation styles and psychological-psychiatric difficulties are likely to increase the risk of the onset, maintenance, and outcome of headache. Still personality issues in migraine have been poorly studied, in particular in children and adolescents. This study aims, therefore, to investigate the specific characteristics of personality, and in particular emotion regulation and coping strategies, in adolescent with migraine, comparing them with age-matched patients with idiopathic epilepsy and healthy adolescents. 52 adolescents (age: 11–17) were assessed using a multi-method test battery, which included a self-report questionnaire (the youth self-report), a proxy-report (child behavior checklist) along with a projective personality test, the Rorschach Test, administered and scored according to the Exner comprehensive system. The results showed specific personality characteristics in adolescents with migraine, revealing a marked difficulty in modulating and regulating affections through thoughts and reflections, resorting instead to impulsive acts and maladaptive coping strategies, thus revealing a vague and immature perception of reality. Differently from adolescents belonging to the general population, but similarly to patients with epilepsy, adolescents with migraine perceive a high situational stress, probably related to the condition of suffering from chronic disease. They have, therefore, a lower self-consideration and self-esteem along with a poorer insight regarding themselves as well as the relations with others. In line with previous findings, these preliminary results suggest the need for further research on ample samples, using also standardized projective test in order to better understand the pathogenesis of psychological difficulties in patients with migraine. As a clinical implication, the results seem to indicate that providing a psychological integrated approach can play a pivotal role in the assessment and treatment of adolescent with migraine, in order to improve the outcome and the quality of life of the young patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Psychiatric diagnoses, parenting style, family functioning among children and adolescents with migraine, and psychiatric symptoms of their mothers were examined. METHODS The K-SADS and other measurements were used to assess psychiatric disorders in 50 children with migraine (aged 8-18) and matched 50 controls. RESULTS At least one psychiatric disorder was diagnosed in 56% of the migraine group. The presence of any psychiatric disorder in children (odds ratio [OR] = 2.765, P = .027) and somatization symptoms in their mothers (OR = 2.061, P = .025) were increasing the risk of migraine diagnosis. The parenting style scale assessments revealed that parents in the migraine group grant their children less autonomy. CONCLUSION Psychiatric comorbidity, especially depression and anxiety disorders, is more common in children with migraine. The frequency of eating disorder is also higher. Evaluating comorbidity, family functioning, and particularly affective responsiveness in migraine families may guide the clinician to a targeted treatment plan.
