Analysis of Resilience, Coping Style, Anxiety, and Depression Among Rescue Nurses on EMTs During the Disaster Preparedness Stage in Sichuan, China: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Survey

Psychological resilience and associated factors in caring for mass burn patients among rescue nurses: A cross-sectional study

This current study explored the relationship between challenge-hindrance stressors, coping style, and psychological resilience among rescue nurses caring for mass burn patients.

METHODS

This study is multicenter and cross-sectional. Registered nurses who saved and cared for extensively burned patients at two tertiary hospitals in mainland China between January and August of 2023 were selected through purposeful sampling. Online surveys were used to gather data. Multiple linear regression and Pearson correlation were used to examine the link between challenge-hindrance stressors, coping style, and psychological resilience.

RESULTS

121 nurses completed the online questionnaires. The mean score for psychological resilience was 63.80 ± 11.63, for the challenge-stressor 16.23 ± 4.38, and for hindrance-stressor 9.85 ± 3.89. The total score for positive coping style was 23.69 ± 7.73, and that for the negative coping style 11.45 ± 5.21. Pearson analysis showed total resilience score was positively correlated with challenge stressors (r = 0.697, p＜0.05) and positive coping style (r = 0.616, p＜0.05), and negatively correlated with the hindrance stressors (r = -0.512, p＜0.05) and negative coping style (r = -0.589, p＜0.05) among rescuer nurses. Multiple linear regression analyses identified that having attended rescues before, challenge-hindrance, and coping style are the potential influencing factors of resilience.

CONCLUSION

In mass burns accidents, rescuer nurses have a medium level of psychological resilience, which positively and significantly correlated with challenge stressors and positive coping style. It is suggested that more attention should be devoted to the target population to formulate effective intervention plans, reduce psychological impact, and improve their capacity for coping with disasters.

Unveiling the heart of disaster nursing: A qualitative study on motivations, challenges, and lessons from the devastating 2023 Turkey earthquakes

BACKGROUND

Turkey has faced a notable escalation in earthquake disasters in the last two decades. Despite initiating a health and disaster management system, nurses' pivotal roles and experiences in handling such crises have been disregarded.

AIM

This qualitative study analyzed nurses' experiences before, during, and after deployment in response to the 2023 Turkey earthquakes to enhance disaster-response efforts.

METHODS

This descriptive qualitative study was conducted between March and May 2023 using semistructured interviews with 15 nurses purposively  sampled among those who volunteered to work in the earthquake zone. The MIRACLE and COREQ guidelines were followed for reporting qualitative research.

FINDINGS

The analysis exposed five main themes for pre-tasking: moral obligation, motivation, insufficient experience, balancing responsibilities, and preparation challenges. The peri-task themes include responsibilities, skills, bravery and characteristics, workload management, teamwork, and outcomes. Post-tasking has three themes: competence assessment, career goals and aspirations, and support. Training and coping with anxiety and stress are common themes for all phases.

CONCLUSIONS

Disaster relief requires a comprehensive and coordinated response from healthcare organizations, government agencies, and support systems. Providing adequate training, ensuring safety protocols, offering mental health support, and fostering a fair and supportive work environment are crucial steps in mitigating the adverse effects on nurses and, by extension, the patient care process in earthquake-affected areas.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY

Nurse training in disaster preparedness should cover various response methods and involve multiple disciplines. Managers can help by arranging drills, simulations, online courses, and workshops and promoting partnerships for improved collaboration. Psychological support should be included to address emotional challenges. Regularly updating response policies based on past experiences is crucial for preparedness and efficiency.

Depression, anxiety, stress, and job performance among Turkish nurses in the early post-earthquake period

BACKGROUND

Individual and social concerns can negatively affect nurses' mental health during a large-scale earthquake's early stages, making it challenging to perform their professional responsibilities.

AIM

This cross-sectional correlational study aimed to examine the relationship between depression, anxiety, and stress levels Turkish nurses experienced during an earthquake's early period. The nurses participating in this study were not directly present in the earthquake-affected area.

METHODS

The study was conducted on 232 nurses between February 10 and 25, 2023. The data were collected using the Depression, Anxiety, Stress-21 Scale and the Job Performance Evaluation Form developed by the researchers through a literature review. These were used to investigate nurses' work motivation changes due to the earthquake. The study followed the STROBE checklist for cross-sectional studies.

RESULTS

The participants' depression levels were severe, anxiety levels were extremely severe, and stress levels were moderate following the earthquake. Nurses who felt exhausted experienced reduced energy levels toward their work and reported a decrease in their desire, effort, and work motivation to perform well. In addition, they had higher depression, anxiety, and stress scores (p < 0.005).

CONCLUSION

Psychological difficulties, including depression, anxiety, and stress experienced by nurses not directly present in an earthquake-affected area, reduced their professional efforts and motivation and negatively affected the patient care process. Further studies should focus on conducting comparative studies in different cultures affected by natural disasters on the longitudinal analysis of the impacts of nurses' psychological distress on their job performance.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY

Nursing policymakers should be aware of the negative psychological effects experienced by nurses during the early post-earthquake period, even if they are not directly present in the earthquake-affected area. The study recommended that nurses should be provided with psychological support to deal with the negative effects of natural disasters and maintain job performance, including the nursing care process.

Enhancing Emergency Nurses' Disaster Nursing Ability and Psychological Resilience: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective

This study aimed to investigate emergency nurses' disaster nursing ability and psychological resilience, validate the effectiveness of a training system for disaster nursing ability based on psychological resilience, and verify the relationship between psychological resilience and disaster nursing ability among emergency nurses.

Methods

A training system was developed to enhance psychological resilience and disaster nursing ability. A multicenter, randomized controlled experiment was conducted in five Grade III hospitals in Sichuan Province. A total of 93 emergency nurses were randomly assigned to the following three groups: the blank group, intervention group, and control group. The corresponding interventions were as follows: no intervention, psychological resilience, and nurses' disaster nursing ability training. Personal information forms, the Connor-Davidson Resiliency Scale, and the Nurses' Disaster Nursing Ability Assessment Scale were used in the survey.

Results

There was no significant difference in the scores of psychological resilience and disaster nursing ability in the blank group in the pretest and posttest (P > 0.05). The disaster nursing ability of both the intervention and control groups significantly improved in the posttest (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the intervention group demonstrated significant improvement in psychological resilience in the posttest (P < 0.05). However, there was no statistical difference in psychological resilience scores in the control group in the pretest and posttest (P > 0.05).

Conclusion

The study concluded that the psychological resilience and disaster nursing ability of emergency nurses could be enhanced through the implemented training system.

Moral courage, job-esteem, and social responsibility in disaster relief nurses

BACKGROUND

Social responsibility can motivate disaster relief nurses to devote themselves to safeguarding rights and interests of people when facing challenges that threaten public health. However, few studies focused on the relationship of moral courage, job-esteem, and social responsibility among disaster relief nurses.

OBJECTIVE

To explore the influence of moral courage and job-esteem on the social responsibility in disaster relief nurses and clarify the relationship model between them.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 716 disaster relief nurses from 14 hospitals in central China through an online survey, including moral courage scale, job-esteem scale, and social responsibility questionnaire. The data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation, and the mechanism of the effect of moral courage and job-esteem on social responsibility was completed.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

This study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University (Approval Number: 2019016).

RESULTS

Disaster relief nurses' moral courage positively impacted social responsibility (r = 0.677, p < 0.01), and moral courage could affect social responsibility through the mediating role of job-esteem.

CONCLUSION

Job-esteem mediated between moral courage and social responsibility among disaster relief nurses. Nursing managers regular assessment of nurses' moral courage and interventions such as meetings and workshops can reduce moral distress, foster morally courageous behavior, enhance job-esteem, and improve social responsibility performance among disaster relief nurses.

Analysis of Factors Affecting Psychological Resilience of Emergency Room Nurses Under Public Health Emergencies

Resilience is essential for frontline health workers to cope with the unfavorable situations, especially under public health emergencies. Emergency room (ER) nurses are a special cohort of health professionals that may present moderate level of resilience. This study aimed to identify factors that are correlated with resilience in this special cohort to provide directions for intervention and management. ER nurses that have encountered a public health emergency within 3 months were recruited using purposive sampling and snowball technique for the study. Questionnaires, including Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) were established, followed by an in-depth interview to identify different clusters of themes. Thirteen ER nurses were recruited, and the average CD-RISC score was 66 ± 21. Resilience was negatively correlated with SDS index, and positively correlated with personal accomplishment. Five clusters of themes were identified from in-depth interviews, including physical tolerability, psychological tolerability, tenacity of internal drive, institutional implementation, and external adjustment. This study identified factors associated with resilience in ER nurses under public health emergencies, providing useful information for future directions for intervention.
