Prosthenhystera gattii n. sp. (Digenea: Callodistomidae), a gallbladder parasite of Bryconamericus ikaa from the lower Iguazú River, described based on combined molecular and morphological evidence

Description of Saccocoelioides miguelmontesi n. sp. (Digenea: Haploporidae) from characid fishes in the Iguazu River Basin based on morphological and molecular evidence

Here we describe a new species of the genus Saccocoelioides found parasitizing Astyanax dissimilis Garavello & Sampaio, Psalidodon bifasciatus (Garavello and Sampaio) and Bryconamericus ikaa Casciotta, Almirón & Azpelicueta from the Iguazu National Park, Misiones province, Argentina. Saccocoelioides miguelmontesi n. sp. was studied based on morphological and molecular (28S rDNA and COI mtDNA sequences) data. The COI mtDNA tree indicated that the specimens collected from the three fish hosts are conspecific, with an intragroup p-distance of 0%. The new species shows an intermediate morphological configuration between the diminutive and robust forms described for Saccocoelioides by Curran (2018). Although, in the 28S rDNA tree, it is placed in a well-supported clade with the two robust species analysed (S. elongatus and S. magnus; p-distance of 1 and 2%, respectively), it differs from the robust group by the range of body size, mature egg size, oral and ventral sucker size, sucker ratio, oral sucker to pharynx ratio, and post-cecal or post-testis/body length percentage. Our results led us to redefine the robust group as having eggs shorter or equal in length to the pharynx. Saccocoelioides miguelmontesi n. sp. the 10th species reported from Argentina and the 7th species within the robust group.

Integrative approach for discovering of the new species within the genus Allocreadium Looss, 1900 (Trematoda: Allocreadiidae) and framing of biogeographical hypotheses for the genus

In July 2012 new Allocreadium species was isolated from Carassius gibelio caught in the Arsenyevka River, Primorsky region, Russia. Analyses on the morphometrics and internal organs' topology revealed that these worms are morphologically closest with A. isoporum but both species are independent according to high genetic distances based on the 28S gene fragment (5.434±0.0073%). Unlike A. isoporum found earlier in Europe, the new species named A. pseudoisoporum sp. nov. has a shorter body length and the vitellarium not reaching the posterior end of the body at some distance and its anterior border is on the level of the ventral sucker. Allocreadium pseudoisoporum sp. nov. differs from seven species previously found in the Russian Far East with the following features: smaller size of the body, suckers' ratio, range values, and topology of internal structures. Newly localities in the Pavlovka River and the Artyomovka River were discovered for A. khankaiensis. Morphological variability of the worms from the Pavlovka River was observed in comparison with A. khankaiensis from the Komissarovka River. Using scanning electron microscope, we examined external surfaces of three species (A. pseudoisoporum sp. nov., A. khankaiensis, A. hemibarbi) and observed structures reminiscent sensory receptors. This study was aimed to describe species diversity of allocreadiids inhabiting the south of Primorsky region, and to clarify phylogenetic relationships between the species from the genus Allocreadium Looss, 1900 using molecular genetic methods. The phylogenetic Bayesian tree based on the 28S gene showed a clear separation of ten Allocreadium species and confirmed the validity of A. pseudoisoporum sp. nov. Allocreadium pseudoisoporum sp. nov. is most similar to A. gotoi (genetic distances - 3.578±0.0051% in 28S, and 18.777±0.0149% in cox1), and represented the earliest divergent lineage in Allocreadium clade on the phylogenetic tree based on the 28S gene, thereby indicating its proximity to the ancestral node. Also, dichotomous keys for 25 Palearctic species of Allocreadium were prepared based on the morphology of the adult worms.

Chelatrematidae n. fam., a new family of digenetic trematodes from the South Western Ghats, India, erected on the basis of morphological and molecular studies

On the basis of the morphological characterization of Chelatrema neilgherriensis Manjula & Janardanan, 2006 recovered from the freshwater fish Barilius gatensis (Valenciennes, 1844) in the Wayanad region of the Western Ghats, the diagnostic features of the genus Chelatrema Gupta & Kumari, 1973 have been modified. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of C. neilgherriensis and comparative morphology studies relative to members of other families of Gorgoderoidea Looss, 1901, this genus is placed in a new family Chelatrematidae n. fam. The studies revealed the molecular and morphological closeness of Chelatrema with Paracreptatrematina limi Amin & Myer, 1982, and the latter is transferred to this new family. Hence the new family Chelatrematidae n. fam. comprises the genera Chelatrema and Paracreptatrematina.

Adult forms of members of the Callodistomidae always parasitize the gallbladder of freshwater fishes and occur in Africa and America. This study provides a description of a new South American species belonging in Prosthenhystera from the gallbladder of a characid fish (Bryconamericus ikaa), and ribosomal gene sequences (28S rDNA and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) are used to demonstrate molecular differences between the new species and congeners as well as explore interrelationships among congeners. Additionally, the first cytological analysis is conducted for a member of the family to determine chromosome number and arrangement. Prosthenhystera gattii n. sp. most closely resembles Prosthenhystera caballeroi in morphology, but the vitellarium is more extensive reaching anterior to the caecal bifurcation in the new species and the uterus is confined to the hindbody in P. gattii n. sp., whereas it extends to the level of the pharynx in P. caballeroi. Also, the testes, cirrus sac, seminal receptacle and the ratio of body length to width are larger in P. gattii n. sp. Independent Bayesian inference analyses of 28S rDNA and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 sequence fragments produced phylograms that showed P. gattii n. sp. is more similar to Prosthenhystera obesa + Prosthenhystera oonastica than P. caballeroi + two unidentified species of Prosthenhystera, but with poor posterior probability support for the node in the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-based phylogram. Further, the genetic distance between P. oonastica and P. gattii n. sp. are the largest among Prosthenhystera spp. Cytological analysis revealed ten metacentric chromosomes, which is fewer than the 12-18 chromosomes present in species from the closely related Gorgoderidae.
