An Introduction to the Study of the Comparative Anatomy of the Labyrinth

Volumetric comparisons on some nuclei in the cerebellar complex of prosimians

Seven measurements were performed on the cerebellar complex of 30 specimens, covering three species each of Cheirogaleidae, Lemuridae and Indriidae, and Daubentonia, and three each of Lorisinae, Galaginae, and Tarsius. The items measured were the volume of the medial (CM), interposed (CI), and lateral (CL) cerebellar nuclei, ventral pons (VPo), inferior olivary principal (OLIPr) and accessory (OLIAc) nuclei, and the vestibular nuclear complex (VES). The raw data for these measurements were previously reported [Matano et al., Folia Primatol 44:171-181, 182-203, 1985; 47:189-203, 1986; Matano, Anthropol Soc Nippon 100:69-82, 1992]. For this paper, the relative size of each nucleus was expressed in terms of size indices based upon the allometric line obtained by reduced major axis analysis and comparisons between species within family or subfamily were made. Lemur showed one of the highest cerebellar complex indices and Lepilemur one of the lowest. Generally, the three cerebellar nuclei (CM, CI, and CL) were enlarged to the same extent in each species. Only Daubentonia showed higher size indices of CL, VPo, and OLIPr than of CM and OLIAc. Characteristics of the cerebellar complex enlargement of Tarsius were comparable to those of prosimians. The VES indices for non-leaping Lorisinae were markedly lower than those for the actively leaping Galago and Tarsius.

A new quantitative model of total endolymph flow in the system of semicircular ducts

1. A new concept of endolymph flow in the vertebrate vestibular system is presented. This approach describes quantitatively the flow in the entire system of three semicircular ducts interconnected by the utriculus and the crus commune. This approach is quite distinct from the classical theory in which the labyrinth is generally conceived to consist of three separate duct circuits. 2. The present approach shows the following set of distinct differences to the classical view: (a) In a labyrinth composed of three ducts perpendicular to each other the flow is non-zero in the other ducts when the labyrinth is rotated in the plane of a particular duct. (b) In a labyrinth with two equal ducts and with the duct planes under approximately 73 degrees the flow in one duct is zero when the rotation takes place in the plane of the other duct. Previous measurements of duct angles reflect this value surprisingly well. An obtuse or sharp angle between duct planes can lead to better performance of a particular labyrinth because the "external impulses" in the different ducts may amplify or compensate each other. (c) The behaviour of the flow in the entire labyrinth is a non-linear function of direction or rotation (cf. points (d), (e]. (d) Six time constants for the entire labyrinth can be distinguished (three long, three short); the flow in a particular duct is composed of six terms with these time constants. The composition of this flow and thus the relative importance of the terms depends on the positioning of the labyrinth with respect to the rotation vector. (e) The time constants also depend, for different labyrinths, on a shared influence of the dimensions of the ducts and the elastic properties of all three cupulae. (f) The forces in a particular duct depend also on the amount of motion the fluid will acquire in the other ducts. (g) The sensitivity of a particular duct depends also on the dimensions of the other parts in the vestibular system. 3. Equations for a system consisting of two ducts and for the classical single duct system are also given. Both systems are special cases of the three-duct system. The single duct equations are equivalent with equations given by Oman (1980) and Oman et al. (1987) which include the contribution of a wide utriculus. 4. The present theory of endolymph flow is mainly supported by the outcome of previously performed experiments concerning time constants and rotation of human subjects in different planes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Anatomic variations of the human semicircular canals. A radioanatomic investigation

The anatomic variations of the semicircular canals were investigated in a series of 95 plastic temporal bone preparations. The results showed a wider range of variability than has been assumed previously. An intraindividual correlation was found between the sizes of the superior and lateral semicircular canals. Observations indicate why a semicircular canal is not invariably delineated on one tomographic plane despite correct positioning for its optimum reproduction.

Semicircular canal structure during postnatal development in cat and guinea pig

The gain of the vestibulo-ocular reflex in the cat continues to increase for some time after birth. The reason for this increase is not presently known and one possibility if that it occurs because the cat semicircular canals increase in size. The present study examined this possibility by measuring the radii of curvature (R) of individual semicircular canals and the angular relationships of the semicircular canal planes within a labyrinth in cats and guinea pigs during postnatal growth. It was found that the labyrinths do move apart substantially during postnatal development in both species, but neither the planar relations nor the radii of curvature change significantly during postnatal development. The stability of semicircular canal structure during postnatal skull growth indicates that postnatal developmental changes in canal-related function, such as increased gain in the vestibulo-ocular reflex, in these species are probably due to receptor cell or neural maturational factors.

Neuromorphometric features and dimensional analysis of the vestibular end organ in the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus)

Neuromorphometric parameters of the vestibular system were determined from serial sections of temporal bones from four little brown bats. Well-developed eminentiae cruciatae project from the cristae ampullares of the anterior and posterior membranous ampullae. A total of 4,500 bipolar ganglion cells were enumerated within the vestibular ganglion. The widths of the cell somas varied from 2.5 to 20 micrometers, with 70% of them having widths between 5.0 and 12.5 micrometers. Two maxima were observed in a curve of ganglion cell density as a function of the length of the ganglion. The first maximum indicated a density of 4,800 cells per mm2 at a length 0.20 from the apex of the ganglion (in the pars dorsalis); the second, a density of 4,750 cells per mm2 at 0.38 mm (in the pars ventralis). The morphometric parameters studied were the radii of curvature of the semicircular ducts, the cross-sectional diameters of the semicircular canals and ducts, the dimensions of the cristae ampullares and their membranous ampullae, and dimensions pertaining to the statoconial organs. Surface areas (measured from graphic projections) were determined as 0.098 mm2 and 0.016 mm2 and hair cell count 500 and 1,300 cells for the saccular and utricular maculae, respectively. The radii of curvature of the three semicircular ducts, R, were dissimilar, with the anterior duct having the largest radius (R = 0.91 mm) and the posterior duct the smallest one (R = 0.69 mm). The average cross-sectional diameters of the anterior, lateral, and posterior ducts were measured as 0.11 mm, 0.14 mm, and 0.13 mm, respectively. Some of the morphological parameters were used to ascertain information regarding the dynamics of semicircular--canal function. In particular, the coefficients theta and II in the torsion pendulum model (Steinhausen, '31; Egmond et al., '49), and the time constants xi L congruent to II/delta and xi S congruent to theta/II of the torsion pendulum model were estimated for the little brown bat from these parameters. Where appropriate, comparisons were made to time constants obtained for other species.

Semicircular canal radii of curvature (R) in cat, guinea pig and man

The radii of curvature (R) of the horizontal (Rh), anterior (Ra) and posterior (Rp) semicircular canals were measured by a new technique (called ROTA) for cat, guinea pig and man. For each canal, data points from the osseous canal were rotated and plotted by computer such that the plane of the sheet of computer plot corresponded to the plane best fitting that canal. The radius of each osseous canal was determined and where necessary, the radius of the arc of data points was corrected for thickness of the absent tissue. For cat, guinea pig and man there are differences in R between canals within a labyrinth suggesting that if other things are equal there could be differences in the average mechanical sensitivity of the canals, which is consistent with physiological recordings from primary vestibular neurons in the cat. The Rs determined by ROTA are compared with Rs determined by conventional histological means.

The orientation of the semicircular canals in the guinea pig

In 10 adult guinea pigs the stereotaxic coordinates of a series of points along each osseous semicircular canal were analysed to yield an equation of that canal plane in stereotaxic space. Angular relationships among the canal planes and between the canal planes and the major stereotaxic planes are presented together with the optimal positions of the head for physiological stimulation of each canal or pair of synergistic canals. The planes of the semicircular canals in each labyrinth are not perpendicular to one another and the planes of contralateral synergistic canals depart from parallelism by about 30 degrees.
