Supraglottic paraganglioma originated from superior laryngeal nerve

Neurogenic tumors, especially paraganglioma of larynx, are rare. In this article, we present a 64-year-old woman who complained of intermittent dysphagia to solid foods. Further evaluation revealed a supraglottic paraganglioma and she was treated successfully by total excision of tumor.

Emergency embolization after resection of a laryngeal Schwannoma

Schwannoma is a rare cause of benign tumors of the larynx. The first-choice treatment is surgical resection. The objective of this paper is to report on a rare case of a young female patient who suffered severe intraoperative hemorrhaging during surgical resection of a laryngeal Schwannoma and needed emergency embolization.

Laryngeal schwannoma: case report and literature review

Neurogenic tumours of the larynx, particularly schwannomas are rare. We report a case report of a schwannoma in a 30-year-old woman which was excised endoscopically. The aim of this paper is to highlight this rare condition and management options to the otolaryngological community.

Laryngeal Neurilemmoma: A Case Report

Published reports of benign nerve sheath tumors of the larynx are extremely rare. Because these tumors represent a potential threat to the airway, prompt diagnosis and treatment are vital. We report a case of a neurilemmoma that arose from the right arytenoid muscle adjacent to the arytenoid cartilage. The mass was completely excised, and no recurrence was observed during follow-up. We discuss the diagnosis and management of this rare tumor.

Schwannoma of the Larynx: A Case Report

Neurogenic tumors of the larynx are rare. We report a case of supraglottic schwannoma in a 59-year-old woman. We excised the tumor via a lateral thyrotomy approach.

Current management of head and neck schwannomas

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

The purpose of this review is to discuss the contemporary management of head and neck schwannomas by reviewing the literature and presenting the authors' experience.

RECENT FINDINGS

Molecular studies are attempting to link genetic factors to the development of nerve sheath tumors. Many studies emphasize the importance of preserving the nerve of origin, but structural preservation may not necessarily lead to the preservation of its functional integrity. The importance of neural reconstruction and postoperative rehabilitation is also emphasized.

SUMMARY

Head and neck schwannomas are uncommon tumors that may affect any peripheral, cranial, or autonomic nerve. This explains their variation in terms of location, clinical presentation, and outcome after surgical resection. History, physical examination, fine needle aspiration, and magnetic resonance imaging are used as diagnostic modalities. Cure entails a complete resection, all attempts being made to preserve the nerve of origin. Otherwise, immediate reconstruction and postoperative rehabilitation should be undertaken in the context of a multidisciplinary management team.

Neurinoma laríngeo: a propósito de un caso

Neuromas or Schwannomas are extremely rare among tumors of the larynx. They are Schwann cell tumors that can be difficult to distinguish from neurofibromas. They present usually as supraglottic masses, since they may arise from the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve. Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging is the best diagnostic technique, conferring a high degree of suspicion. We present an exceptional case of a laryngeal neuroma, with a very long evolution, a large tumor volume, dyspnea and vocal cord fixation, with complete resolution through an external approach following surgical removal. The difficulties encountered with its pathological and clinical diagnosis are discussed as well as a review of the literature.

Asphyxial death caused by a laryngeal schwannoma: a case report

Neurogenic tumours of the larynx are unusual, with approximately 115 cases reported in the literature to date. Most of these lesions are benign, solitary submucosal nodules which present with hoarseness and are amenable to surgical resection. We present a case of a large pedunculated schwannoma arising in the aryepiglottic fold associated with sudden asphyxial death in an otherwise healthy young female.

Subglottic nerve sheath tumor in a pediatric patient: case report and literature review

BACKGROUND

Although nerve sheath tumors (neurilemmoma and neurofibroma) can occur on any nerve with Schwann cells, laryngeal involvement is very uncommon. The vast majority of reported laryngeal nerve sheath tumors have been located in the supraglottic area. Our case report involves the diagnosis and management of a subglottic nerve sheath tumor in a pediatric patient. Only two previous reports of such a lesion appear in the world literature.

METHODS

A 12-year-old girl was initially seen by her allergist for evaluation of a 2-month history of wheezing and nocturnal dyspnea. Therapy with bronchodilators and steroids had limited success. Flow-volume loop studies suggested a fixed upper airway obstruction, and an office laryngoscopy identified a cherry red, submucosal subglottic lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan verified the presence of a smooth, homogeneous subglottic mass.

RESULTS

An endoscopic CO2 laser excision of the lesion was performed using jet ventilation technique. Histopathology determined the lesion to be a nerve sheath tumor (neurilemmoma versus neurofibroma). Postoperatively, the patient has been asymptomatic without evidence of recurrence.

CONCLUSIONS

A subglottic nerve sheath tumor in a pediatric patient is very rare. Although endoscopic and open approaches have been advocated, CO2 laser with jet ventilation provided an excellent modality for resecting this lesion.

Schwannoma of the larynx: a case report

A case of schwannoma of the larynx is presented. Clinical findings are presented together with magnetic resonance images. The literature is reviewed. The surgical technique is discussed and the histology is described.

Laryngeal schwannomas

As laryngeal schwannomas are a threat to breathing, they must be removed. CT and MR provide an accurate pre-operative work-up of these lesions. The clear delineation of the tumoral attachment to the larynx proved to be very useful in the difficult management of our second patient. Our two laryngeal schwannomas exhibited a similar appearance which differed from those of the few other laryngeal nerve sheath tumors reported in the literature The low attenuating outer part correlated with Antoni B areas. The denser enhancing inner part correlated with Antoni A areas containing large vessels. This unusual tumoral appearance, which has been observed in some other peripheral schwannomas, must bring this diagnostic possibility to mind. However, this clearly contrasting distribution of the two components of schwannomas is not the most commonly observed in other locations. More reports are needed to establish whether this special appearance is characteristic of laryngeal location.
