Abstract
(1) Background: Non-squamous cell laryngeal carcinoma includes endothelial tumors, such as minor salivary gland tumors, lymphoepithelial tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, soft and hard tissue sarcomas, and malignant melanomas. (2) Methods: A state-of-the-art review using the MEDLINE/PUBMED, Google Scholar, Ovid Medline, Embase, and Scopus electronic databases was performed. (3) Conclusions: In order to optimize overall treatment outcomes, a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to the management of non-SCC of the larynx must be adopted universally; a national or international registry on non-SCC laryngeal cancer can be useful to improve understanding about the behavior of this kind of tumor.

Abstract
The pathology of non-squamous carcinoma of the larynx is broad and there is a wide differential diagnosis. The most common presenting symptoms for laryngeal malignancies, both squamous and non-squamous, are hoarseness and dyspnea. Presentation with persistent or worsening symptoms and a submucosal lesion should raise suspicion for a non-squamous malignancy of the larynx. Accurate histology determines the most appropriate treatment and has an impact on prognosis.

Abstract
Salivary gland carcinomas of the larynx are uncommon. Adenoid cystic carcinoma is the most prevalent type of salivary gland carcinoma in this region, although other histologies such as mucoepidermoid carcinoma and adenocarcinomas have been reported. These tumors may present with advanced-stage due to nonspecific symptoms and their relatively slow-growing nature. The index of suspicion for a non-squamous cell carcinoma entity should be high when a submucosal mass is present. An accurate diagnosis is mandatory due to the impact each biologic entity has on treatment and outcome. Data concerning treatment and outcome are scarce, but primary surgery with utmost focus on free surgical margins is the treatment of choice. The role of adjuvant radiotherapy has not been well defined, although there is an agreement that it should be considered in advanced-stage or high-grade disease. This review considers only the most common malignant salivary neoplasms of the larynx with a focus on clinical management of these tumors.

Abstract
Although the majority of laryngeal malignancies are the conventional squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), a wide variety of malignant epithelial tumors can affect the larynx. Current treatment guidelines are designed to guide clinicians in management of conventional laryngeal SCC. Less is known about the biological behavior and responsiveness to therapy and overall outcomes of other malignant epithelial lesions. Because a spectrum of disease biology is represented by these rare phenotypes, an understanding of the basic biology can help direct management to optimize clinical outcome in this group of patients. This review provides a critical analysis of literature relating to the diagnosis, management, and outcome of patients with non-conventional squamous malignant epithelial neoplasms of the larynx. Particular attention is paid to features which are at variance with the conventional SCC and how these impact on management of these rare tumors.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this review is to give a detailed description of chondroma and chondrosarcoma of the larynx and to put into perspective new findings from recent literature. RECENT FINDINGS Recent findings indicate that chondroma and chondrosarcoma of the larynx are closely related, either synchronously (areas of both tumor types within the same lesion) or metachronously (malignant transformation of chondroma over time). It is questioned whether the grading of Lichtenstein and Jaffe, and Evans et al. should be used in the larynx, because these grading systems were designed for chondrosarcoma of the long bones. Chondrosarcomas of the larynx seems to behave more like chondrosarcomas of the phalanx, because they too hardly ever metastasize or cause tumor-related deaths. Both CT and MRI play an important role in the workup of these tumors, but they cannot be used to differentiate between both tumor types. No new treatment modalities have emerged recently and surgery is still the treatment of choice. Tracheal autotransplantation may play an increasing role in the treatment of cricoid tumors because it allows for wide resection and optimal revalidation. SUMMARY It is now firmly established that metastasis in chondrosarcoma is a poor prognostic sign, but is very rare. Without metastasis the prognosis is excellent. Cartilaginous tumors of the larynx are rare. Clinical, radiologic and pathologic characteristics of these tumors are described and a review of treatment modalities is presented. Wide excision with clear margins is usually indicated. The authors recommend that the management of cartilaginous tumors of the larynx be multidisciplinary and centralized in dedicated referral centers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Occult regional metastases in supraglottic cancer NO are the object of classical controversies. The aim of our study is to provide our experience in order to determine how neck treatment affects on regional recurrence of NO supraglottic cancer. METHODS A retrospective study of 246 patients with NO supraglottic cancer treated in our service between 1977 to 1999 is presented. RESULTS 11.4% of patients did not have any cervical treatment, with a 23% of neck recurrence amongst the evolution. 66.7% of patients were treated with a modified radical neck dissection, 24% of these presented occult metastases in the histopathological study. Global regional recurrence was 2.9% in early stages (T1/T2) and 13.1% in advanced stages (T3/T4). In pN+ patients, 85% underwent postoperative radiotherapy, with a regional recurrence of 8.8%. Postoperative clinical control without any other treatment in pN0 patients showed a neck recurrence of 6.1%. We performed a unilateral neck dissection in those patients with clear-lateral tumours. In these cases the clinical control of the contralateral neck gave a 5.5% recurrencies on that side. Patients treated with elective primary radiotherapy suffered a 5.5% of regional recurrence. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS Neck treatment of the NO supraglottic cancer is recommended. We treat neck in the same way of primary tumour (surgery or radiotherapy) with good control of regional recurrencies, less than 10%. In case of a negative pathological study of the neck careful, watching is the elective attitude. In the positive pathological study of the neck (pN+), radiotherapy is the elective treatment in those with three or more affected nodes or capsular breakdown in any of them.

Abstract
This paper presents a review of the experience of 12 patients with chondrosarcoma of the larynx treated at The Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, London, over the last 24 years. This represents the largest European series and the third largest in the world. Chondrosarcoma is the most frequent non-epithelial malignant tumor of the larynx, with 83.3% of cases arising from the cricoid cartilage in our series. We have shown that deep wedge biopsy with a CO2 laser, aided by computerized tomography scanning, gives the most reliable diagnosis. Laryngeal chondrosarcoma is characterized by indolent growth, a potential for local recurrence and, infrequently, by metastases. The treatment details of our patients are discussed. Adequate partial resection is often successful and use of CO2 laser as the initial treatment in five of these cases is presented.

Abstract
An exhaustive literature review of the last two decades discloses 47 laryngeal malignant neoplasms in children and adolescents. The most frequent malignant neoplasm is the embryonal variant of rhabdomyosarcoma. The timely diagnosis of a laryngeal neoplasm depends on maintaining a high index of suspicion in a patient with progressive airway obstruction, dysphagia or dysphonia, and conducting an efficient work-up-including magnetic resonance imaging and direct laryngoscopy under general anesthesia in association with bronchoscopy-in order to define the extent of the lesion, rule out multiple lesions, establish and maintain an airway, and perform a biopsy of the tumor. The authors observed that several risk factors, such as previous radiation therapy for juvenile laryngeal papillomatosis, intrauterine exposure to ionizing radiation, chemical carcinogens, smoking or tobacco exposure were lacking in those patients with a detailed clinical history. Probably, cancer of the larynx in these unusual patients is the final result of an interaction of immunological and genetic factors. The choice of therapy depends on several factors, including the clinical stage at presentation, histological type and potential radio-chemosensitivity of the tumor.
