Abstract
Augmented Depression Therapy (ADepT) is an individual psychotherapy for depression, which has been shown to be effective in the general adult population. A randomised multiple baseline case series evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of ADepT in young adults (aged 20-24). Eleven depressed young adults were recruited from a UK university wellbeing service to receive ADepT during the COVID-19 pandemic, with outcomes evaluated relative to pre-specified continuation targets. All participants received a minimum adequate treatment dose (>60% target); 89% judged ADepT as acceptable and satisfactory and would recommend it to others (>60% target); only 9% showed reliable deterioration for depression or wellbeing (meeting <30% target); and there were no trial- or treatment-related serious adverse events. Qualitative interviews revealed most participants were satisfied with and experienced benefits from ADepT. At post-treatment, reliable improvement was shown by 33% of participants for depression and 67% of participants for wellbeing (not meeting target of both >60%), with medium effect size improvements for depression (g = 0.78) and large effect size improvement for wellbeing (g = 0.93; not meeting target of both >0.80). ADepT is feasible, acceptable, and safe in young adults but may require modification to maximise effectiveness. Further research outside of the COVID-19 pandemic is warranted.

Abstract
LAY ABSTRACT Depression is common among autistic youth and has a significant negative impact on quality of life and day-to-day functioning. Despite great need for efficacious treatments, there are currently limited research-supported interventions for depression symptoms in autistic young people. This study tested a novel, behavior-based approach or psychotherapy for treatment of depression symptoms in autistic adolescents without intellectual disability (i.e. Behavioral Activation for Autistic Adolescents, BA-A) with 15 youth (11-16 years old). BA-A is an individually delivered 12-session therapy that was developed for and to meet the needs of autistic youth with depression. Results found that autistic youth and their caregivers were able to participate in BA-A therapy sessions, and clinicians were able to deliver BA-A in accordance with the treatment manual. Notably, results demonstrated that autistic youth depression symptoms significantly improved after participating in BA-A. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms and social skills significantly improved following BA-A.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The prevalence of the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been increasing globally, necessitating updates to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders with respect to ASD diagnosis. It is now recognised that ASD is related to sensory processing disorder, and sensory integration is considered a suitable intervention for treating children diagnosed with ASD. METHODS This paper provides a systematic review on a timeline from 2013 to 2023, based on the PRISMA model. Evidence was sought in the academic search engines Pubmed, Scielo, Eric, Dialnet, Springer, Base Search and Google Scholar, which produced 16 articles according to the inclusion criteria. RESULTS According to the results of this review, intervention with sensory integration in infants with ASD meets the criteria to be considered an evidence-based practice. The studies reviewed focused mainly on clinical settings and, therefore, we highlight the urgent need for further research to evaluate the effectiveness of sensory integration interventions in naturalistic settings such as homes and schools. CONCLUSIONS This will help to obtain more representative data on how these interventions affect the daily lives of children with ASD.

Abstract
Background Numerous experimental studies have shown that exercise can serve as an intervention with beneficial effects on children and adolescents with autism. However, a systematic review on the specific areas affected has not been conducted. Methods Preliminary research sources were obtained by searching four databases, and two researchers independently screened the literature that met the study criteria. The study was conducted under the guidelines of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. Results 37 studies were included in the final analysis, of which 9 studies were quantitatively synthesized and 28 studies were qualitatively analyzed. Exercise interventions have positive effects on motor performance, cognitive function, individual and social relationships, behavioral problems, physical health, and brain function in children and adolescents with autism. The results of the meta-analysis indicate that exercise can effectively improve social skills [SMD=-0.53, 95%CI (-0.76, -0.3), P=0.000]. Conclusions Long-term, regular, chronic exercise is beneficial for children and adolescents with autism, particularly in the area of social skills. Abstract
Autistic children and young people (CYP) experience mental health difficulties but face many barriers to accessing and benefiting from mental health care. There is a need to explore strategies in mental health care for autistic CYP to guide clinical practice and future research and support their mental health needs. Our aim was to identify strategies used to improve mental health care for autistic CYP and examine evidence on their acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness. A systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out. All study designs reporting acceptability/feasibility outcomes and empirical quantitative studies reporting effectiveness outcomes for strategies tested within mental health care were eligible. We conducted a narrative synthesis and separate meta-analyses by informant (self, parent, and clinician). Fifty-seven papers were included, with most investigating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based interventions for anxiety and several exploring service-level strategies, such as autism screening tools, clinician training, and adaptations regarding organization of services. Most papers described caregiver involvement in therapy and reported adaptations to communication and intervention content; a few reported environmental adjustments. In the meta-analyses, parent- and clinician-reported outcomes, but not self-reported outcomes, showed with moderate certainty that CBT for anxiety was an effective treatment compared to any comparison condition in reducing anxiety symptoms in autistic individuals. The certainty of evidence for effectiveness, synthesized narratively, ranged from low to moderate. Evidence for feasibility and acceptability tended to be positive. Many identified strategies are simple, reasonable adjustments that can be implemented in services to enhance mental health care for autistic individuals. Notable research gaps persist, however.

Abstract
Autistic youth are at high risk of depression, but there are few psychological interventions that have been specifically designed for use with this population. Behavioural activation (BA) is a particularly promising approach for autistic adolescents, having an established evidence-base for the treatment of depression in non-autistic people, and with a strong focus on behavioural, rather than cognitive change, which is a challenge for some autistic people. In this study, we worked with autistic adolescents and clinicians to co-design a BA-informed intervention to be delivered in an online format. We then conducted a pilot case-series with seven autistic adolescents with depression. Our focus was on establishing the acceptability and feasibility of the intervention but clinical outcomes on both self- and parent-reported symptoms of depression and anxiety are also presented. Our results indicate the intervention to be acceptable and feasible for autistic adolescents, with six out of seven participants being retained to the end of the intervention. Qualitative feedback indicated that all participants found the intervention a positive experience and would recommend it to others. Similarly, all participants found the online format acceptable, with 64% preferring this format to face-to-face therapy. Qualitative feedback and suggestions for refinement will also be discussed.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), affecting over 2% of the pre-school children population, includes an important fraction of the conditions accounting for the heterogeneity of autism. The disease was discovered 75 years ago, and the present review, based on critical evaluations of the recognized ASD studies from the beginning of 1990, has been further developed by the comparative analyses of the research and clinical reports, which have grown progressively in recent years up to late 2023. The tools necessary for the identification of the ASD disease and its related clinical pathologies are genetic and epigenetic mutations affected by the specific interaction with transcription factors and chromatin remodeling processes occurring within specific complexes of brain neurons. Most often, the ensuing effects induce the inhibition/excitation of synaptic structures sustained primarily, at dendritic fibers, by alterations of flat and spine response sites. These effects are relevant because synapses, established by specific interactions of neurons with glial cells, operate as early and key targets of ASD. The pathology of children is often suspected by parents and communities and then confirmed by ensuing experiences. The final diagnoses of children and mature patients are then completed by the combination of neuropsychological (cognitive) tests and electro-/magneto-encephalography studies developed in specialized centers. ASD comorbidities, induced by processes such as anxieties, depressions, hyperactivities, and sleep defects, interact with and reinforce other brain diseases, especially schizophrenia. Advanced therapies, prescribed to children and adult patients for the control of ASD symptoms and disease, are based on the combination of well-known brain drugs with classical tools of neurologic and psychiatric practice. Overall, this review reports and discusses the advanced knowledge about the biological and medical properties of ASD.

Abstract
Mental health challenges impede the well-being of autistic people. This Review outlines contributing neurodevelopmental and physical health conditions, rates and developmental trajectories of mental health challenges experienced by autistic people, as well as unique clinical presentations. A framework is proposed to consider four contributing themes to aid personalized formulation: social-contextual determinants, adverse life experiences, autistic cognitive features, and shared genetic and early environmental predispositions. Current evidence-based and clinical-knowledge-informed intervention guidance and ongoing development of support are highlighted for specific mental health areas. Tailored mental health support for autistic people should be neurodivergence-informed, which is fundamentally humanistic and compatible with the prevailing bio-psycho-social frameworks. The personalized formulation should be holistic, considering physical health and transdiagnostic neurodevelopmental factors, intellectual and communication abilities, and contextual-experiential determinants and their interplay with autistic cognition and biology, alongside resilience. Supporting family well-being is integral. Mutual empathic understanding is fundamental to creating societies in which people across neurotypes are all empowered to thrive.

Abstract
Family accommodation describes changes parents make to their behavior, intended to alleviate their child's distress, which stems from a psychopathology. In anxiety, studies show that accommodation alleviates distress in the short term but is associated with increased symptom severity, greater functional impairment, poorer treatment outcomes, increased caregiver burden and disruption to family functioning longitudinally. Research shows high prevalence of family accommodation of anxiety in autism. While the most common treatments for anxiety in autism are cognitive-behavior therapy and pharmacology, research is limited and other approaches must be considered. Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is a parent-based, manualized treatment for anxiety targeting family accommodation, which has been found to be acceptable and efficacious in treating childhood anxiety. This pilot trial examined the feasibility, acceptability, treatment-satisfaction, and preliminary efficacy of SPACE for anxiety in autism. Parents of 15 autistic children (ages 6-10 years) with at least average cognitive abilities exhibiting high levels of anxiety participated in 13 weekly sessions of SPACE. Feasibility and acceptability were assessed through enrollment, attrition rates, and adverse events. Of 26 eligible families, 22 (84.62%) elected to participate, 15 of whom (68.18%) completed treatment. Parents rated the treatment as highly satisfactory. Anxiety symptom severity and family accommodation were significantly reduced following treatment, with 86.66% of participants showing reliable change post-treatment, and this reduction was preserved at 2-month follow-up. This study provides preliminary evidence that SPACE is feasible, acceptable, satisfactory, and produces improvement in anxiety in the autistic population.Trial registration number: NCT04747262 Date of registration: February 10, 2021.
