Strategies for eliminating chicken manure odour in horticultural applications

The influence of manure-based organic fertilisers on the oviposition behaviour of Anopheles arabiensis

The rice agroecosystem provides suitable breeding habitat for many malaria vector species, and rice-adjacent communities are consequently exposed to a greater malaria transmission risk than non-rice-associated communities. As part of efforts to expand rice production in Africa, sustainable and climate-adapted practices such as the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) are being promoted. SRI encourages the use of organic fertilisers (OFs) such as cow and chicken dung, as opposed to inorganic industrially produced fertilisers, due to their lower resource cost, apparent benefit to the rice agroecosystem and as a means to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of industrial fertilisers. However, the impact of OFs on mosquito fauna is not well documented and may have knock-on consequences on malaria transmission risk. Here, we demonstrate, using dual choice egg count assays, that both cow and chicken dung modulate the oviposition behaviour of Anopheles arabiensis, a major malaria vector in Sub-Saharan Africa. A significantly reduced proportion of eggs were laid in water treated with either cow or chicken dung compared to untreated water, with higher dung concentrations resulting in further reduced proportions. When presented in competition, significantly fewer eggs were laid in water treated with chicken dung than with cow dung. Moreover, there was no evidence of egg retention in any experiment, including in no-choice experiments where only dung-containing dishes were available. These results suggest both cow and chicken dung may act as oviposition deterrents to malaria vector species and that the application of manure-based OFs in rice agriculture may modulate the oviposition behaviour of An. gambiae s.l. within agroecosystems. Quantification of the ammonia present in dung-infused water showed higher concentrations were present in the chicken dung infusion, which may be one contributing factor to the difference in observed deterrence between the two dung types. Deterrence of mosquito oviposition in OF-treated farms may potentially affect the overall production of malaria vectors within rice fields and their contribution to local malaria transmission.

Characteristics of Gases Emitted from Chicken Manure Wastewater and Potential Effects on Human Health

Hazardous and odorous gas emissions from chicken manure wastewater are a public preoccupation. Odor composition measurements are crucial steps to provide appropriate air pollution control measures and design strategies to minimize the human health impact. In this study, chicken manure wastewater samples were extensively analyzed in a closed system by a portable handheld gas detector to characterize the odor and chemical compositions. A portable detector was calibrated prior to sampling. The total number of 153 chemical compounds found in the chicken manure wastewater samples had various olfactory characteristics, including strong, pleasant, and odorless smells. Depending on the route of exposure, most of these chemical compounds could cause human health effects, such as irritation, burns, and severe symptoms including carcinogenic.

Environmental Drivers for Persistence of Escherichia coli and Salmonella in Manure-Amended Soils: A Meta-Analysis

Application of organic amendments to agricultural land improves soil quality and provides nutrients essential for plant growth; however, they are also a reservoir for zoonotic pathogens whose presence poses a significant risk to public health. The persistence of bacteria in manure-amended soil, and differences in manure handling practices, are important issues from a food safety perspective. The primary objective of this study was to quantitatively summarize the variations in the rate of decline of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. in manure-amended soil under laboratory and field conditions, and to assess the impact of environmental factors. Available literature data on persistence of E. coli and Salmonella spp. in manure-amended soil from 42 primary research studies were extracted and statistically analyzed using a mixed-effect regression model. The results indicated that temperature (soil and air combined) was the most prominent factor affecting persistence of both E. coli and Salmonella spp. under laboratory conditions (P < 0.001), and of E. coli under field conditions (P < 0.05). The time required for a log reduction of E. coli under field conditions was significantly higher at low temperature (0 to 10°C) than at high temperature (greater than 20°C) (P < 0.05). In addition, application method was identified as a significant factor, with manure incorporation to soil inducing longer survival compared with surface application by approximately 1.2 times. The significant variation observed among primary research studies of bacterial persistence has highlighted that mitigation strategies associated with the use of manures in fresh produce production need to be improved by addressing factors such as climate, soil management, application method, and initial microbial levels. These findings may be used to support guidelines establishing exclusion periods between manure fertilization and the grazing or harvesting of crops, and may be useful for the generation of quantitative microbial risk models for fresh produce.

Odorous Compounds from Poultry Manure Induce DNA Damage, Nuclear Changes, and Decrease Cell Membrane Integrity in Chicken Liver Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells

Animal breeding and management of organic wastes pose a serious problem to the health of livestock and workers, as well as the nearby residents. The aim of the present study was to determine the mechanisms of toxicity of selected common odorous compounds from poultry manure, including ammonia, dimethylamine (DMA), trimethylamine (TMA), butyric acid, phenol, and indole. We measured their genotoxic and cytotoxic activity in the model chicken cell line (LMH), in vitro, by comet assay and lactate dehydrogenase assay, respectively. We also made microscopic observations of any morphological changes in these cells by DAPI staining. Four compounds, namely ammonia, DMA, TMA, and butyric acid increased DNA damage in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05), reaching genotoxicity as high as 73.2 ± 1.9%. Phenol and indole induced extensive DNA damage independent of the concentration used. Ammonia, DMA, and TMA caused a dose-dependent release of lactate dehydrogenase (p < 0.05). The IC₅₀ values were 0.02%, 0.05%, and 0.1% for DMA, ammonia and TMA, respectively. These compounds also induced nuclear morphological changes, such as chromatin condensation, shrinkage, nuclear fragmentation (apoptotic bodies), and chromatin lysis. Our study exhibited the damaging effects of odorous compounds in chick LMH cell line.
