Attention to near and far space: The third dichotomy

Perceiving what is reachable depends on motor representations: evidence from a transcranial magnetic stimulation study

BACKGROUND

Visually determining what is reachable in peripersonal space requires information about the egocentric location of objects but also information about the possibilities of action with the body, which are context dependent. The aim of the present study was to test the role of motor representations in the visual perception of peripersonal space.

METHODOLOGY

Seven healthy participants underwent a TMS study while performing a right-left decision (control) task or perceptually judging whether a visual target was reachable or not with their right hand. An actual grasping movement task was also included. Single pulse TMS was delivered 80% of the trials on the left motor and premotor cortex and on a control site (the temporo-occipital area), at 90% of the resting motor threshold and at different SOA conditions (50ms, 100ms, 200ms or 300ms).

PRINCIPAL FINDINGS

Results showed a facilitation effect of the TMS on reaction times in all tasks, whatever the site stimulated and until 200ms after stimulus presentation. However, the facilitation effect was on average 34ms lower when stimulating the motor cortex in the perceptual judgement task, especially for stimuli located at the boundary of peripersonal space.

CONCLUSION

This study provides the first evidence that brain motor area participate in the visual determination of what is reachable. We discuss how motor representations may feed the perceptual system with information about possible interactions with nearby objects and thus may contribute to the perception of the boundary of peripersonal space.

Embodiment, spatial categorisation and action

Despite the subjective experience of a continuous and coherent external world, we will argue that the perception and categorisation of visual space is constrained by the spatial resolution of the sensory systems but also and above all, by the pre-reflective representations of the body in action. Recent empirical data in cognitive neurosciences will be presented that suggest that multidimensional categorisation of perceptual space depends on body representations at both an experiential and a functional level. Results will also be resumed that show that representations of the body in action are pre-reflective in nature as only some aspects of the pre-reflective states can be consciously experienced. Finally, a neuro-cognitive model based on the integration of afferent and efferent information will be described, which suggests that action simulation and associated predicted sensory consequences may represent the underlying principle that enables pre-reflective representations of the body for space categorisation and selection for action.

Visual illusion in virtual world alters women?s target-directed walking

In this study we investigated whether a visual illusion located in far space alters a person's open-loop, target-directed walking path in the same manner as it alters the perception of the target's position. Through the use of immersive VR the subject was able to walk physically to the location of a target embedded in a scene that was manipulated to create a visual illusion, known as the induced Roelofs effect. This illusion has been shown to alter the perception of a target's position. The experiment consisted of two tasks: a perception task and an action task. In the perception task, subjects viewed the scene for 1 s, it disappeared, and they were to report the target's location verbally. The results showed that the visual illusion altered the reported positions in all but one subject. In the action task, subjects viewed the scene for 1 s, it disappeared, and the subjects were asked to walk to the target's location. The results showed that the illusion significantly altered the walking paths of most of the women and less than half of the men. A significant gender effect was observed; women's walking paths deviated, on average, by 7.1 degrees and men's, by only 2.0 degrees . These results indicate that action tasks in far space are susceptible to the effects of visual illusions, unlike the action tasks in near space that reportedly have been resistant to them. Furthermore, the significant gender effect suggests that men and women either have different strategies and/or employ different mechanisms when executing a visually guided task in far space.

Line bisection in normal adults: direction of attentional bias for near and far space

The direction of attentional bias in forty normal adults was assessed using a computer generated line bisection task. A 4 (viewing distance)x4 (line length)x2 (cursor starting position) repeated measures factorial design was employed. As predicted, differences in bisection performance as a function of viewing distance were observed. The findings confirmed that scanning direction (contingent upon the starting position of the cursor), but not line length, significantly modulated this effect. The direction of bias across near and far space was further clarified yielding a progressive shift from a leftward bias in near space to a rightward bias in far space. A significant interaction of distance, line length and starting position revealed differential effects for left and right starting positions as a function of viewing distance and line length. More specifically, a leftward start witnessed deviations shifting progressively from left-to-right as distance and line length increased though no comparable pattern was observed for rightward starts. The results provide important behavioural support for the suggestion that dissociated neural systems may be responsible for attending and acting in near and far space and that other lateralised functions (such as scanning strategies) can influence hemispheric activation. The findings have relevant theoretical implications as well as important implications for the clinical assessment of unilateral neglect using a standard line bisection task, both of which are discussed.

Near and far visual space in unilateral neglect

A 24-year-old right-handed woman with a right temporal hematoma showed marked left visual neglect for far but not near space in a variety of tasks systematically given in near and far distance conditions. This case thus provides the dissociation opposite to Halligan and Marshall's patient, who had neglect for near but not far space after a right parietal stroke. Furthermore, although she made rightward errors in bisecting far-distant lines, our patient made smaller opposite leftward errors for near-distant lines. The evidence that unilateral neglect of far and near visual space may exist independently supports a division in the neural systems subserving attention to different compartments of the extrapersonal space in humans.

Left neglect for near but not far space in man

It has been suggested that, among the many visual areas of the human brain, there might be one set of spatial maps specialized for 'near' (peripersonal) and another for 'far' (extrapersonal) space. A distinction between 'grasping distance' and 'walking distance', or between a 'reaching field' and a pointing or throwing field has commonly been made. Evidence for such a division has been found in monkeys. Unilateral ablation of the frontal eye field (area 8) produces a more prominent inattention (or 'neglect') for objects in contralesional far space than in near space; by contrast, unilateral ablation of frontal area 6, which receives direct projections from area 7b (the rostral part of the inferior parietal lobules) results in inattention to visual stimuli limited to contralesional near space. Despite predictions that comparable dissociations should be found in man, there has been no convincing evidence. We report here such evidence in a patient with a unilateral right hemisphere stroke. Within peripersonal space, he showed severe left visuo-spatial neglect on conventional tests, including the highly sensitive task of line bisection. When line bisection was performed in extrapersonal space, neglect was abolished or attenuated.
