The role of travel in enhancing life satisfaction among Chinese older adults in Hong Kong

The mediating role of psychological resilience between social participation and life satisfaction among older adults in China

BACKGROUND

A significant correlation has been discovered between social participation and older adults' life satisfaction, but the relationships among social participation, psychological resilience, and life satisfaction remain to be confirmed. Therefore, this study aims to identify the relationship between social participation and life satisfaction for Chinese older adults and to analyse the possible mediating role of psychological resilience between these two aspects.

METHODS

Data on 15,779 people aged 65 years and above were extracted from the 2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Social participation was classified into two levels: low-level involvement activities and high-level involvement activities. Hierarchical regression analysis was applied to analyse the correlations between the two levels of social participation and older adults' life satisfaction as well as the mediating effects of psychological resilience on this association.

RESULTS

The results indicate that two levels of social participation were each positively correlated with life satisfaction. Specifically, high-level involvement activities (β = 0.070, P < 0.001) were more strongly associated with life satisfaction than low-level involvement activities (β = 0.051, P < 0.001). Moreover, psychological resilience was found to partially mediate the association between low-level involvement activities and high-level involvement activities and life satisfaction.

CONCLUSION

A higher level of life satisfaction for older adults is related to participation in high-level involvement activities. Psychological resilience has a mediating effect on the association between two levels of older adults' social participation and life satisfaction. These findings suggest that the government and society should establish a more concrete understanding of the psychological resilience of older adults.

Do Social Pension Schemes Promote the Mental Health of Rural Middle-Aged and Old Residents? Evidence From China

As China experiences rapid aging, the mental health of older rural adults has become a major public health concern. Among other social insurance programs, the New Rural Social Pension (NRSP) scheme was established to replace part of the income for old-age rural residents in China. This article employs survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2015 and 2018 to investigate the impact of a pension on depression in middle-aged and old residents. Our results show that the pension scheme not only reduces the depressive symptoms of the rural residents but keeps down the prevalence rate of depression. Among the subscribers of the pension scheme, the pensioners benefit more from enrolling in the pension scheme than the contributors in terms of depression alleviation. The impact of pension on depression displays heterogeneity; female residents, residents in central China, and/or those from lower income households are found to be positively affected. It is also confirmed that a pension scheme contributes to easing depression via reduced labor supply, better family support, and more consumption expenditure.

Influence of Subjective/Objective Status and Possible Pathways of Young Migrants' Life Satisfaction and Psychological Distress in China

Young migrants have been the major migrant labor force in urban China. But they may be more vulnerable in quality of life and mental health than other groups, due to their personal characteristic and some social/community policies or management measures. It highlights the need to focus on psychological wellbeing and probe driving and reinforcing factors that influence their mental health. This study aimed to investigate the influence of subjective/objective status and possible pathways of young migrants' life satisfaction and psychological distress. Data on 9838 young migrants in the China Migrants Dynamic Survey were analyzed by LISREL 8.8. A total of 94.03% migrated for jobs or business. Subjective status, including subjective socioeconomic status, social adaptation, and psychological integration, had positive effects on life satisfaction, whereas social adaptation and psychological integration negatively affected psychological distress. Objective status, including objective socioeconomic status and health insurance, had adverse effects on life satisfaction, whereas they positively affected psychological distress. Social participation and city belonging had only significant positive mediating roles on life satisfaction. It is essential to increase social adaptation and decrease integration stress according to younger internal migrants' practical needs. It is also necessary to enhance community/social resources and activities in the context of developing sustainability in the community to assist in mental health promotion.

Investigating Factors of Active Aging among Chinese Older Adults: A Machine Learning Approach

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

With the extension of healthy life expectancy, promoting active aging has become a policy response to rapid population aging in China. Yet, it has been inconclusive about the relative importance of the determinants of active aging. By applying a machine learning approach, this study aims to identify the most important determinants of active aging in three domains, i.e., paid/unpaid work, caregiving, and social activities, among Chinese older adults.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHOD

Data were drawn from the first wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which surveys a nationally representative sample of adults aged 60-year-old and above (N=7,503). We estimated Random Forest and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression models to determine the most important factors related to active aging.

RESULTS

Health has a generic effect on all outcomes of active aging. Our findings also identified the domain-specific determinants of active aging. Urban/rural residency is among the most important factors determining the likelihood of engaging in paid/unpaid work. Living in a multi-generational household is especially important in predicting caregiving activities. Neighborhood infrastructure and facilities have the strongest influence on older adults' participation in social activities.

DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS

The application of feature selection models provides a fruitful first step in identifying the most important determinants of active aging among Chinese older adults. These results provide evidence-based recommendations for policies and practices promoting active aging.

Social participation and urban-rural disparity in mental health among older adults in China

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to explore the effect of social participation on disparity in mental health among urban and rural older adults in China.

METHODS

The data used in this study was sourced from the 2014 wave of Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Furthermore, multiple linear regression model was adopted to analyze the effect of social participation on mental health. Moreover, Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition for linear model was applied to explore the effect of social participation on urban-rural disparity in mental health.

RESULTS

The regression result indicates that social participation significantly improved cognitive ability and psychological health for urban and rural older adults, and its health effect was significantly stronger for rural older adults. Furthermore, the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition result reveals that approximately 18% of cognitive ability disparity could be attributed to urban-rural disparity in social participation. Moreover, urban-rural disparity in social participation could explain about 11% of psychological health disparity.

CONCLUSION

Urban older adults had better mental health than their rural counterparts. Furthermore, social participation was beneficial for mental health for urban and rural older adults. Urban-rural disparity in social participation made an important contribution to mental health disparity between urban and rural older adults. The results of this study emphasized the importance of social participation of older adults.

Social participation and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults: A study on rural-urban differences

BACKGROUND

Although studies conducted in developed countries have reported a negative relationship between social participation and depressive symptoms, few studies have examined rural-urban differences in the relationship between participation in various types of social activities and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults.

OBJECTIVES

This study examined the association between participation in paid work, political, and voluntary activities and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults in urban and rural areas.

METHODS

Data were obtained from the China Longitudinal Ageing Social Survey conducted in 2014, and bivariate linear regression and multivariable linear regression analyses were conducted.

RESULTS

The prevalence of depressive symptoms was significantly higher among older adults residing in rural areas than among older adults in urban areas. Participation in paid work activities was significantly associated with fewer depressive symptoms among older adults in urban and rural areas, whereas participation in political or voluntary activities was negatively associated with depressive symptoms only among older adults in urban areas. Older adults who participated in two or three types of activities (paid work, political, and voluntary activities) tended to have fewer depressive symptoms both in urban and rural areas.

LIMITATIONS

Because this study comprised a cross-sectional design, causality could not be established between social participation and depressive symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS

Social participation plays a protective role against depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults, especially among those in urban areas. Urban-rural differences exist between participation in different types of social activities and depression symptoms.
