Does Life Satisfaction Vary with Time and Income? Investigating the Relationship Among Free Time, Income, and Life Satisfaction

Time and income are distinct and critical resources needed in the pursuit of happiness (life satisfaction). Income can be used to purchase market goods and services, and time can be used to spend time with friends and family, rest and sleep, and other activities. Yet little research has examined how different combinations of time and income affect life satisfaction, and if more of both is positively associated with greater levels of life satisfaction. We investigate whether life satisfaction significantly varies with time and income using data from the American Time Use Survey and its well-being module, which is a nationally representative sample of over 5000 US respondents over the age of 15. We plot a three-dimensional space exploring the relationship among time, income, and life satisfaction, finding people with similar incomes with less free time have lower levels of life satisfaction. We also identify different four subpopulations, three of which have low well-being along time and income, and one with high well-being along time and income. These sub-groups significantly differ along key characteristics. Respondents with less free time and low income-the doubly poor-are more likely to be female, less educated, and have more than two kids and young children. Those with low income but lots of time, in comparison, are more likely to be black, unemployed, and have some physical or cognitive difficult. We conclude that time provides unique insights into human well-being that income alone cannot capture and should be further incorporated into research and policy on life satisfaction.

The Impact of Cohousing on Older Adults' Quality of Life

The global population including Canada's is aging, which demands planning for housing that will support older adults' quality of life. This mixed-method study is the first Canadian study to examine the impact of cohousing on older adults' quality of life and involved 23 participants. The older adults rated their quality of life very high, especially in the environmental, physical, and psychological domains of the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL_BREF) survey; quality of life in the social domain was rated low, which was surprising in light of the focus group data findings. Four themes of "belonging in a community", "life in the community", "changes associated with aging," and "aging in place" emerged from the qualitative data to explain factors that influence older adults' quality of life. This research provides foundational, strong evidence that seniors' cohousing is an innovative housing solution that can support older adults' quality of life.

Predictors of Long-Term Care Facility Residents’ Self-Reported Quality of Life With Individual and Facility Characteristics in Canada

Objective: Identify predictors of long-term care (LTC) facility residents’ self-reported quality of life (QoL). Method: QoL of a convenience sample of 928 residents from 48 volunteer LTC facilities across six Canadian provinces was assessed using the inter–Resident Assessment Instrument (interRAI) Self-Report Nursing Home Quality of Life Survey. Multivariate regression models were used to identify predictors. Results: In logistic regression modeling, residents who were religious and socially engaged, had a positive global disposition, or resided in rural, private, or municipal facilities were less likely to report low QoL. Those with post-secondary education and who were dependent on activities of daily living were more likely to report low QoL. These factors, except for religiosity and residence in municipal facilities, were significant in generalized estimating equation (GEE) modeling. Discussion: QoL is significantly associated with select resident and LTC facility characteristics with implications for improving residents’ QoL and LTC facility programming, and guiding future research and social policy development.

Residents’ Self-Reported Quality of Life in Long-Term Care Facilities in Canada

La qualité de vie (QV) dont bénéficient les résidents des centres d'hébergement de soins de longue durée (SLD) est un résultat important des soins. Cette étude descriptive transversale a examiné la qualité de vie auto-declarée de résidents des établissements de SLD au Canada, tout en utilisant l'auto-évaluation interRAI Nursing Home Quality of Life Survey. Un objectif secondaire était de tester les propriétés pschométriques de l'instrument. Les tests psychométriques de l'instrument ont soutenu sa fiabilité et la validité de sa convergence et de son contenu pour l'évaluation de QV des résidents. Les résultats ont montré que les résidents ont évalués positivement plusieurs aspects de leur vie, comme d'avoir la vie privée lors des visites (76,9%) et l'honnêteté du personnel en traitant avec eux (73,6%). Les résidents ont accordé des taux inférieures à d'autres aspects, comme l'autonomie, la liaison entre le personnel et les résidents, et les relations personnelles. Les résultats suggèrent des lacunes importantes entre les philosophies de soins dans les établissements et leur traduction dans un environnement de soins ou les soins sont vraiment dirigés aux résidents. En outre, les résultats ont des implications potentielles pour la planification de soins aux résidents, la programmation de l'installation, le développement de la politique sociale et de la recherche future.

Influence of home care on life satisfaction, loneliness, and perceived life stress

Strong evidence has established the medical and health services utilization benefits of home care services for older adults. However, sparse research has been conducted on potential psychosocial benefits. Older adults (65 and over) receiving home care with their needs met are compared with persons who have unmet needs (whether they received home care or not) on three key indicators of quality of life – life satisfaction, loneliness, and perceived life stress. Data are drawn from the 2008-2009 Canadian Community Health Survey respondents who met the study criteria (n = 3,244). Regression analyses showed that older adults who had their home care needs met reported higher levels of life satisfaction, and lower levels of loneliness and perceived life stress, than those with unmet needs, net of co-variates. The results suggest that filling this home care gap would significantly raise quality of life by increasing social and environmental resilience to age in place.
