Abstract
Olive oil extraction generates large amounts of a highly pollutant by-product called olive cake (OC), and its use in ruminant feeding could be an alternative. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of partially replacing forage by crude OC (COC) in a mixed dairy diet on rumen fermentation and microbial populations in Rusitec fermenters. The COC replaced 33% of the forage (66% maize silage and 33% barley straw) and was included at 16.6% of the total diet. Four fermenters were used in a cross-over design with two 13-day incubation periods. Experimental diets had a 50:50 forage-to-concentrate ratio and were formulated to contain the same protein (16.0%) and neutral detergent fiber (32.5%) levels. Compared with control fermenters, those fed the COC diet showed greater (p ≤ 0.02) pH (6.07 vs. 6.22), diet disappearance (0.709 vs. 0.748), and butyrate proportions (18.0 vs. 19.4), but there were no differences in volatile fatty acids and ammonia production. Microbial growth, bacterial diversity, protozoal abundance, and relative abundance of fungi and archaea were unaffected by diet, although the solid phase of COC-fed fermenters showed greater (p = 0.01) bacterial abundance than control ones. Results indicate that COC could replace 33% of the forage in a mixed dairy diet.

Abstract
Citrus pulp is a highly abundant by-product of the citrus industry. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of replacing extruded maize (EM; 20% of total diet) by dried citrus pulp (DCP; 20%) in a mixed diet on rumen fermentation and microbial populations in Rusitec fermenters. The two diets contained 50% alfalfa hay and 50% concentrate, and the same protein level. Four Rusitec fermenters were used in a cross-over design with two 13-d incubation runs. After 7-d of diet adaptation, diet disappearance, fermentation parameters, microbial growth, and microbial populations were assessed. Fermenters receiving the DCP showed greater pH values and fiber disappearance (p < 0.001) and lower methane production (p = 0.03) than those fed EM. Replacing EM by DCP caused an increase in the proportions of propionate and butyrate (p < 0.001) and a decrease in acetate (p = 0.04). Microbial growth, bacterial diversity, and the quantity of bacteria and protozoa DNA were not affected by the diet, but the relative abundances of fungi and archaea were greater (p < 0.03) in solid and liquid phases of DCP fermenters, respectively. Results indicate that DCP can substitute EM, promoting a more efficient ruminal fermentation.

Abstract
AbstractThe effects of four diets differing in their for age: concentrate ratio (80:20, 60:40, 40: 60 and 20:80; g/100 g fresh matter) on rumen characteristics, digestibility and digesta flow kinetics were investigated. Alfalfa hay was used as forage and concentrate was composed of barley, soya-bean meal and maize. Diets were prepared by mixing all ingredients and offered to the animals as complete diets. Eight mature Merino sheep, each fitted with a rumen cannula, were offered 1·055 kg dry matter per day of the corresponding diet over two experimental periods. The daily evolution of ruminai pH, volatile fatty acids (VFA) and ammonia nitrogen (N) concentrations were measured. Digestibility was determined by total faecal collection and Cr and Co were used as markers to estimate digesta passage rates. Microbial nitrogen flow at the duodenum (MNDF) was estimated from the urinary excretion of purine derivatives (PD). The apparent digestibility of organic matter increased (P < 0·001) whereas that of all fibrous fractions decreased linearly (P < 0·05) as the proportion of concentrate in the diet increased. Rumen pH decreased linearly (P < 0·001) with increasing proportions of concentrate but total VFA concentrations were unaffected by changes in the diet (P > 0·05). Both liquid and solid digesta outflow rates from the rumen decreased quadratically (P < 0·01) as the proportion of concentrate in the diet increased. The urinary excretion of total N, urea-N and ammonia-N was unaffected (P > 0·05) by changes in the diet. In contrast, the daily urinary excretion of both allantoin and total PD increased quadratically (P < 0·05) with increasing proportions of concentrate. Consequently, the estimated MNDF increased linearly (P < 0·001) from 9·9 g/day on the high forage diet to 14·5 g/day on the high concentrate diet.

Abstract
AbstractTwo trials were conducted to study the effect of the stage of maturity of fresh herbage on its digestibility by two breeds of sheep (Churra v. Merino). The sward consisted of a mixture of grasses and clover, and was harvested either in late May (early cut, EC) or in late July (late cut, LC). In each trial, 12 mature sheep of each breed were used. Each animal received a different amount of fresh herbage, so that levels of food intake ranged between 8·1 and 24·7 g dry matter (DM) per kg body weight per day. EC herbage showed higher crude protein content (116 v. 67 g/kg DM), lower neutral-detergent fibre concentration (494 v. 664 g/kg DM) and higher DM digestibility (0·687 (s.e. 0·005) v. 0·463 (s.e. 0·007)) than the LC herbage. DM digestibility coefficients observed in Churra (0·694 (s.e. 0·028) for EC and 0·476 (s.e.0·028) for LC herbage) tended to be greater than those observed in Merino sheep (0·680 (s.e. 0·021) for EC and 0·452 (s.e. 0·040) for LC herbage). With the EC herbage DM digestibility tended to decrease as the level of intake increased. Samples of dried herbage were incubated in the rumen of Churra and Merino sheep to determine the DM degradability by the in situ technique. Fractional degradation rates (c values) were significantly faster in the rumen of Churra than in Merino (0·046 (s.e. 0·003) v. 0·031 (s.e. 0·002)), with large differences between breeds in the DM disappearance rates at intermediate incubation times, and no significant differences between Churra and Merino sheep in the mean a + b values. Microbial N supply, calculated from the urinary excretion of purine derivatives, was significantly affected by the herbage maturity stage and by the level of DM intake, but not by the breed of sheep. It is suggested that differences between breeds of sheep in food digestibility may be related to their ability to digest fibrous diets.

Abstract
AbstractTwo experiments were carried out with pregnant (experiment 1) and lactating ewes (experiment 2), to compare dry-matter (DM) intake, and total tract apparent digestibility, digesta kinetics and weight of digestive tract contents of Lacaune and Manchega sheep, with the aim of explaining possible differences between the breeds in voluntary food intake. In experiment 1, 20 3-year-old single-bearing pregnant ewes, 10 Manchega and 10 Lacaune, were permanently housed for the last 10 weeks of pregnancy. The diet used consisted of lucerne hay, offeredad libitum, supplemented with 0·3 kg/day of concentrate. DM and digestible DM intake per kg M0·75were higher (P< 0·01) in Lacaune than in Manchega sheep. Breed did not affect total tract apparent digestibility, fractional rates of passage, transit time, total mean retention time, or weight of digestive tract contents. Changes in body weight and body condition score were similar between breeds. In contrast, Lacaune lambs tended (P= 0·09) to weigh less than Manchega lambs, suggesting genetic differences in the energy utilization between breeds in late pregnancy. Higher DM intake observed in Lacaune sheep may have been related to a higher energy demand for mammary development. In experiment 2, 32 3-year-old lactating multiparous ewes, 16 Manchega and 16 Lacaune, were permanently housed during the first 12 weeks of lactation. The experimental diet used was based on a mixture of maize silage and dehydrated lucerne (10: 1, fresh weight basis), offeredad libitum, and supplemented with 0·8 kg/day of concentrate. Milk, fat and protein yield as well as DM and digestible DM intake in Lacaune ewes was higher (P< 0·01) than in Manchega ewes. DM intake was constant in Lacaune sheep with advancing lactation, while in Manchega sheep DM intake decreased. Throughout this period Lacaune ewes lost 0·5 kg of body weight while Manchega gained 4·4 kg. Breed did not affect either apparent digestibility of DM, organic matter and neutral-detergent fibre, or fractional rates of passage, transit time and total mean retention time. The weight of total tract digestive contents was greater (P< 0·05) in Lacaune than in Manchega sheep, particularly in the reticulo-rumen. Results suggest that the scheme of selection in Lacaune dairy sheep has increased milk yield together with voluntary food intake, the latter being associated with an increase in the rumen fill capacity. The higher milk yield of Lacaune ewes cannot be attributed to the higher DM intake only; other factors, i.e. mobilization of fat reserves, are required to support this higher milk output.

Abstract
Eight Rusitec and eight single-flow continuous-culture fermenters (SFCCF) were used to compare the ruminal fermentation of two diets composed of alfalfa hay and concentrate in proportions of 80 : 20 (F80) and 20 : 80 (F20). Results were validated with those obtained previously in sheep fed the same diets. Rusitec fermenters were fed once daily and SFCCF twice, but liquid dilution rates were similar in both types of fermenters. Mean values of pH over the 12 h postfeeding were higher (P < 0.001) in Rusitec than in SFCCF, with diet F80 showing higher values (P < 0.001) in both types of fermenters. Concentrations of total volatile fatty acids (VFA) were higher (P < 0.001) in SFCCF than in Rusitec, and in both systems were higher (P = 0.002) for diet F20 than for diet F80. There were significant differences between systems in the proportions of the main VFA, and a fermentation system × diet interaction (P < 0.001) was detected for all VFA with the exception of valerate. No differences (P = 0.145) between the two types of fermenters were detected in dry matter (DM) digestibility, but NDF, microbial N flow and its efficiency were higher (P = 0.001) in SFCCF compared to Rusitec. Whereas pH values and VFA concentrations remained fairly stable through the day in both in vitro systems, pH dropped and VFA increased shortly after feeding in sheep rumen reaching the minimum and maximal values, respectively, about 4 h after feeding. Both in vitro systems detected differences between diets similar to those found in sheep for liquid dilution rate, pH values, DM digestibility, microbial N flow and growth efficiency. In contrast, acetate/propionate ratios were lower for diet F20 than for F80 in sheep rumen (2.73 and 3.97) and SFCCF (3.07 and 4.80), but were higher for diet F20 compared to F80 (4.29 and 3.40) in Rusitec, with values considered to be unphysiological for high-concentrate diets. In vivo NDF digestibility was affected (P = 0.017) by diet, but no differences between diets (P > 0.05) were found in any in vitro system. A more precise control of pH in both types of fermenters and a reduction of concentrate retention time in Rusitec could probably improve the simulation of in vivo fermentation.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare N balance, microbial N flow (MNF) estimated from purine derivatives (PD) urinary excretion, and its variation when estimated using purine bases:N ratios in liquid associated bacteria (LAB) from models reported in the literature (MNF - response models) or measured ratios in liquid and solid-associated bacterial (SAB) pellets (MNF-LAB+SAB), diet digestibility, and rumen fermentation variables in sheep and goats fed 3 different practical, quality diets to study interspecies differences concerning N use as accurately as possible. Four mature female Merino sheep and 4 mature female Granadina goats, each fitted with a ruminal cannula, were used in 3 × 3 Latin square design with an extra animal. Two experimental diets had a forage-to-concentrate ratio of 70:30 (DM basis) with alfalfa hay (ALC) or grass hay (GRC) as forage, and the third diet contained 70% concentrate and 30% alfalfa hay (CAL). All animals were fed the diets at a daily rate of 56 g/kg BW(0.75) to minimize feed selection. Digestibility of nutrients was similar (P = 0.16 to 0.88) in the 2 species, but some animal species × diet interactions (P = 0.01 to 0.04) were detected. There were small differences between the fermentation patterns of both animal species. Goats showed decreased VFA concentrations (P = 0.005) and butyrate proportions (P = 0.04), and greater acetate proportions (P = 0.02) compared with sheep, whereas N intake and percentage of N intake excreted in feces were similar in both species (P = 0.58 and 0.15, respectively), the percentage excreted via the urine was greater in goats compared with sheep (P < 0.001). As a consequence, sheep had greater (P < 0.001) N retention than goats (averaged across diets, 32.6% and 16.1% of N intake, respectively). There were no differences (P = 0.95) between animal species in total PD excretion, but goats showed a greater excretion of allantoin (P = 0.01) and decreased excretion of xanthine (P = 0.008) and hypoxanthine (P = 0.007) compared with sheep. In general, differences between sheep and goats were more pronounced for the medium-quality diet (GRC) compared with those of high-quality diet (ALC and CAL). The greater urinary losses in goats would indicate a greater contribution of goats to N environmental contamination compared with sheep.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the intake and digestive physiology of mature ewes of two breeds--Ile-de-France (mature weight: 75-80 kg) and Churra-da-Terra-Quente (CTQ; mature weight: 45-50 kg)--and evaluate the effects of ambient temperature and protein supplementation in the comparison. The temperature (25 °C vs. 11 °C) and soybean meal supplementation (150 g/kg of ingested hay on dry matter basis vs. unsupplemented control) were evaluated in 48 adult ewes of two breeds fed hay ad libitum and at a restricted level of intake. The intake, digestibility, rumen pH and NH(3)-N, rumen outflow rates, faeces particle size and thyroid hormones levels were measured. These hormones can be related with gastrointestinal motility, thus explaining rumen outflow rate patterns. Dry matter intake per kg of body weight was higher in CTQ ewes (p < 0.05). This breed also exhibited lower organic matter and neutral detergent fibre digestibility (p < 0.001) and higher solid (p < 0.001) and liquid (p < 0.01) rumen outflow rates irrespective of intake level, supplementation or temperature. Rumen pH remained above 6.6 in all treatments. NH(3)-N rumen content was similar (p > 0.05) when breeds were fed only hay. There was no breed effect (p > 0.05) on faeces particle size. Triiodothyronine was not affected (p > 0.05) by breed and thyroxine was higher (p < 0.10) in the CTQ breed but only at the lower temperatures (breed × temperature, p < 0.05). Ile-de-France sheep showed a lack of adaptation to lower temperatures. This study suggests that the native CTQ breed fulfils its metabolic needs by having a higher intake and inherits faster flow through the gastrointestinal tract, as a result, its digestive ability is diminished.

Abstract
AbstractA study was conducted to compare apparent digestibility and digesta flow kinetics in the whole digestive tract in two breeds of sheep (Churra and Merino) offered alfalfa hay at about maintenance. Ten mature sheep (five Churra and five Merino) each fitted with a rumen cannula were used in the study. Apparent digestibility was determined by total faecal collection. Liquid (Co-EDTA) and solid (Cr-mordanted fibre) markers were used to estimate rumen volumes and digesta flows. There were no significant differences between Churra and Merino sheep either in dry-matter or fibre apparent digestibility (P > 0·05). Liquid and solid passage rates did not differ between breeds and the estimated total mean retention times were similar for both genotypes. The volume of liquid in the rumen was proportionately 0·14 greater in Churra than in Merino sheep, although the difference was not significant. Estimated saliva secretion was greater in Churra (11·6 (s.e. 0·77) I/day) than in Merino sheep (10·5 (s.e. 0·72) I/day) but the difference did not reach statistical significance. Solid contents of the rumen did not differ between breeds. Rumen particle density was lowest at 2 h after feeding and remained stable at other sampling times, with no significant differences between breeds. There were no significant differences between breeds in the urinary excretion of total purine derivatives but urinary excretion of allantoin and microbial nitrogen supply tended to be higher in Merino than in Churra sheep (P < 0·20). This was attributed to the smaller rumen pool size of Merino (8·0 (s.e. 0·62) kg) compared with Churra sheep (9·2 (s.e. 0·63) kg). The study indicated that there were no apparent breed differences between Churra and Merino sheep in digestibility and digesta passage when they were given a good-quality forage at a low level of intake.
