Development and initial validation of a questionnaire to measure patient experience with oral appliance therapy

STUDY OBJECTIVES

To develop and validate a questionnaire to measure patient experience with oral appliance therapy.

METHODS

The AMEE Guide No. 87 was followed in the development and validation of a patient questionnaire to assess patient experience with oral appliance therapy.

RESULTS

Our search identified 522 articles; 5 of these articles described the use and/or validation of questionnaires to measure changes in symptoms and patient-reported outcomes in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. A total of 27 questions were developed. Five patients participated in pilot testing. A final review of the questionnaire was conducted by an expert panel.

CONCLUSIONS

The creation and validation of a questionnaire to assess patient experience with oral appliance therapy may provide new methods for advancing research in the field of dental sleep medicine.

Can Patients Co-Create Value in an Online Healthcare Platform? An Examination of Value Co-Creation

With the development of online healthcare services, patients could receive support and create value with other users on online healthcare platforms. However, little research has been conducted on the internal mechanisms of patient value co-creation from the perspective of online healthcare platforms. To analyze patient value co-creation in online healthcare platforms, this study explores the underlying mechanisms of patient value co-creation among patients. The results show that value co-creation includes patient citizenship behavior and participation behavior. Information quality, peer communication, and system quality influence functional experiences and emotional experiences. In addition, functional experiences and emotional experiences could influence patient value co-creation. This study clarifies the mechanism of value co-creation among patients and provides insight into value co-creation in online healthcare platforms.

A holistic framework for patient experience: 5P model

Purpose

Hospitals have become competitive organizations striving to serve the needs of empowered consumers seeking positive experiences. As a result, the patient experience turns into a critical driver of performance for hospitals. Accordingly, the question “what are the critical dimensions for creating a well-designed patient experience?” has been drawing increasing attention from the industry and academia alike. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of patient experience by using multiple source data obtained from experts and patients.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a qualitative research approach to examine the perspectives of both health-care experts and patients about the experience. A semi-structured interview series is conducted with health-care professionals, academicians, researchers, physicians and patients.

Findings

The results suggest a novel framework for the patient experience including five critical dimensions as follows: provider, physician, patient, personnel and periphery. This framework, 5Ps of patient experience, provides a holistic picture, which integrates the perspectives of patients, health-care providers and experts including scholars and researchers.

Practical implications

The 5P framework can be used by health-care professionals to better understand the driving factors of patient experience and to create a strategy to improve patient satisfaction.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the present study is the first qualitative study, which provides a holistic approach to patient experience independent from the branch and considers the perspectives of both health-care experts and patients.

Participant Evaluation of a Prediabetes Intervention Program Designed for Rural Adults

The type 2 diabetes epidemic is a global crisis threatening the health and economies of many nations. This study aimed to evaluate a prediabetes intervention program designed for rural adults in southwestern Ontario based on the feedback of participants. Rural adults with prediabetes were referred by physicians to an intervention program developed to assist with unique barriers rural adults face related to the built environment and socioeconomic status when adopting a healthy lifestyle. After 6 monthly education sessions offered by a dietitian and a nurse, participants completed a questionnaire to share their program experience. In addition, 6 focus groups consisting of 5-9 participants were conducted to assess program acceptability, feasibility, and practicality. Of 49 enrolled, 35 participants aged 60.8 ± 7.1 (mean ± SD) evaluated the program. Participants reported finding the program to be acceptable, feasible, and practical due to the interactive nature of the sessions, the group setting and the availability of health professionals. This prediabetes lifestyle intervention program was perceived as successfully addressing rural adults' needs in terms of adopting a healthy lifestyle. Feedback received through program evaluation, which included a participant experience survey and focus groups has helped improve this program and may benefit other prediabetes education intervention programs.

Patient experiences of a lifestyle program for metabolic syndrome offered in family medicine clinics: a mixed methods study

BACKGROUND

Patient perspectives on new programs to manage metabolic syndrome (MetS) are critical to evaluate for possible implementation in the primary healthcare system. Participants' perspectives were sought for the Canadian Health Advanced by Nutrition and Graded Exercise (CHANGE) study, which enrolled 293 participants, and demonstrated 19% reversal of MetS after 1 year. The main purpose of this study was to examine participants' perceptions of their experiences with the CHANGE program, enablers and barriers to change.

METHODS

A convergent parallel mixed methods design combined patients' perspectives collected by questionnaires (n = 164), with insights from focus groups (n = 41) from three sites across Canada. Qualitative data were thematically analyzed using interpretative description. Insights were organized within a socio-ecologic framework.

RESULTS

Key aspects identified by participants included intra-individual factors (personal agency, increased time availability), inter-individual factors (trust, social aspects) and organizational factors (increased mental health support, tailored programs).

CONCLUSION

Results revealed participants' overall support for the CHANGE program, especially the importance of an extended program under the guidance of a family physician along with a skilled and supportive team. Team delivery of a lifestyle program in primary care or family medicine clinics is a complex intervention and use of a mixed methods design was helpful for exploring patient experiences and key issues on enablers and barriers to health behavior change.
