Spiritual care needs and their associated influencing factors among elderly patients with moderate-to-severe chronic heart failure in China: A cross-sectional study

Spiritual needs of women with breast cancer: A structural equation model

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to develop a structural equation model (SEM) to explore the factors influencing the spiritual needs of breast cancer patients.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted in the breast surgery department of a tertiary hospital in China from September 2020 to December 2020; convenience sampling and questionnaires were used to facilitate sampling and data collection. A total of 220 female breast cancer patients were included in the study. The data were analysed using multiple linear regression and structural equation modelling.

RESULTS

Compared with patients with other diseases, patients with breast cancer have greater spiritual needs (76.16 ± 13.19). Multivariate analysis revealed that religious beliefs, education level, social support, and resilience are important factors affecting the mental health of women with cancer (p < 0.05). The structural equation model fit well (RMSEA = 0.056, χ2p = 0.002). Social support directly affected spiritual needs (β = 0.607, p < 0.001) and indirectly affected spiritual needs through resilience (β = 0.353, p < 0.001). Resilience directly affected spiritual needs (β = 0.386, p < 0.05). Education level indirectly affected spiritual needs through social support (β = 0.307, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

This study provides a theoretical basis for intervention measures to improve the spiritual needs of female breast cancer patients. Paying more attention to social support and resilience may help solve the problem of meeting the high spiritual needs of breast cancer patients. Further research is needed to develop interventions.

Development and Validity and Reliability of an Instrument to Assess Patient's Spiritual Well-Being

Background

Spiritual care is not limited to palliative care or end-of-life care. The spiritual well-being of patients also needs to be taken into account in the multidisciplinary healthcare system of whole person care. For medical institutions providing spiritual care, it is necessary to develop a tool for clinical spiritual care providers to assess patient's spiritual well-being of.

Aim

The purpose of this study was to construct a questionnaire that would allow spiritual care providers or pastors to assess the spiritual well-being of patients.

Methods

The study combined qualitative and quantitative research methods. Qualitative research used in-depth interviews or focus groups with patients and family members to obtain textual data. The text was analyzed by Colaizzi analysis. The researchers constructed the Patient's Spiritual Well-Being Scale (PtSpWBS) from the themes obtained through qualitative analysis. Through the participation of 661 patients, quantitative research was conducted to analyze the reliability, validity and component analysis of the PtSpWBS.

Results

Through qualitative research, it was found the spiritual needs of patients had two domains, namely spiritual awareness and spiritual dynamics. Based on this result, a 15-question PtSpWBS was designed. Cronbach's alpha was used to check the reliability of the PtSpWBS, and the internal consistency was calculated with a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.899. The Bartlett's Test of Sphericity of the PtSpWBS reached a significant difference (p<0.0001), and the KMO value of sampling appropriateness was 0.900. The three components were spiritual health, religion connection, and spiritual awareness. A PtSpWBS score ≦ 41 indicated the patient had poor spiritual well-being.

Conclusion

The study constructed the PtSpWBS for clinical spiritual care providers to evaluate spiritual well-being of patients; this questionnaire has good reliability and validity. The PtSpWBS can be truly used by departments that specialize in providing spiritual care in medical institutions to conduct spiritual well-being assessment.

Spiritual Care Needs of Patients with Urinary Incontinence and Affecting Factors: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study in Turkey

This study was conducted to determine the spiritual care needs of patients with urinary incontinence and various influencing factors. Determining the spiritual care needs of individuals with urinary incontinence may make patients feel more hopeful, peaceful, and stronger. It can also encourage individuals towards positive health behaviors, and can help nurses in choosing appropriate coping methods. A descriptive and cross sectional study was conducted with 220 patients with urinary incontinence who applied to the urology outpatient clinic of a university hospital in Turkey. In the study, data were collected using the descriptive features form, the incontinence severity index, and the Spiritual Care Needs Inventory. Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to evaluate the data. This study is reported following the STROBE recommendations. In this study, mean scores of the patients' spiritual care needs scale and the severity of incontinence, age, gender, and the effect of urinary incontinence on daily life, determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the state of being disturbed by urinary incontinence, the state of performing religious rituals regularly, the state of incontinence affecting religious rituals, the importance of religious beliefs in daily life, and the level of defining spirituality (p < 0.05). In this study, it was determined that the spiritual care need scores of the patients with urinary incontinence were above the medium level, and the sub-dimension scores of meaning and hope, caring, and respect were high. In this context, it is very important to consider the spiritual care needs of patients with urinary incontinence problems.
