Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance is an important threat to public health worldwide, being one of the main death causes in 2050. Moreover, global health is currently underpinned by the "One Health" concept, whereby livestock is strictly related to human and environmental health. However, in the case of the meat rabbit industry, antibiotic additives are still added to prevent gastrointestinal diseases. Current food and consumer awareness require the implementation of sustainable production systems, where robustness and resilience are increasingly important. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of antibiotic feed supplementation on microbiota, and productive performance during the rabbit growing period in a robust genetic line. For this purpose, a total of 432 weaned rabbits were randomly housed, cecum samples were taken on the weaning day and at the end of the growing period (28 and 61 days of age, respectively), and 16S rRNA sequencing analysis was performed. Results showed a higher microbiota complexity at the end of growing in both experimental groups. Firmicutes represented the dominant phylum of the cecal community, followed by Bacteroidota in both groups. Moreover, Victivallis and Escherichia-Shigella genera were only identified in the experimental group without antibiotic supplementation at the end of the growing period. In conclusion, antibiotic feed supplementation had no effect on microbiota composition and productive performance in the robust genetic line reared. These results evidence the importance of the development of rabbit robust genetic lines as an alternative tool to antibiotic administration in epizootic enteropathy control.

Abstract
The Angora rabbit, a well-known breed for fiber production, has been undergoing traditional breeding programs relying mainly on phenotypes. Genomic selection (GS) uses genomic information and promises to accelerate genetic gain. Practically, to implement GS in Angora rabbit breeding, it is necessary to evaluate different marker densities and GS models to develop suitable strategies for an optimized breeding pipeline. Considering a lack in microarray, low-coverage sequencing combined with genotype imputation was used to boost the number of SNPs across the rabbit genome. Here, in a population of 629 Angora rabbits, a total of 18,577,154 high-quality SNPs were imputed (imputation accuracy above 98%) based on low-coverage sequencing of 3.84X genomic coverage, and wool traits and body weight were measured at 70, 140 and 210 days of age. From the original markers, 0.5K, 1K, 3K, 5K, 10K, 50K, 100K, 500K, 1M and 2M were randomly selected and evaluated, resulting in 50K markers as the baseline for the heritability estimation and genomic prediction. Comparing to the GS performance of single-trait models, the prediction accuracy of nearly all traits could be improved by multi-trait models, which might because multiple-trait models used information from genetically correlated traits. Furthermore, we observed high significant negative correlation between the increased prediction accuracy from single-trait to multiple-trait models and estimated heritability. The results indicated that low-heritability traits could borrow more information from correlated traits and hence achieve higher prediction accuracy. The research first reported heritability estimation in rabbits by using genome-wide markers, and provided 50K as an optimal marker density for further microarray design, genetic evaluation and genomic selection in Angora rabbits. We expect that the work could provide strategies for GS in early selection, and optimize breeding programs in rabbits.

Abstract
Uniformity, understood as a similar performance in relevant livestock traits, such as birth weight within the litter, is being included as one of the selection objectives in breeding programmes, especially for polytocous livestock species. A divergent selection experiment for birth weight within‐litter variability in mice during 23 generations showed that homogeneous animals were better for litter size, survival and feed efficiency but less heavy than heterogeneous animals. The aim of this study was to compare the reproductive longevity in both divergent lines as time to the end of the reproductive period. Two generations from both lines with an initial number of 43 females and 43 males were mated one to one and stayed together to have consecutive parturitions until the end of the reproductive life. Females were discarded when the time elapsed from the last parturition was longer than 63 days. The time to the end of the reproductive period between both lines was compared by fitting a Cox proportional hazard regression model adjusting for line, generation and its interaction. The rate of parturitions in both lines was also compared using a Prentice–Williams–Peterson model adjusted for the same effects. The low variability line was associated with a higher parturition rate, e.g., adjusted hazard ratio was 2.93 (95% CI 2.17–3.94). The Cox model showed that the low variability females also presented benefits of time to the end of the reproductive period, with an adjusted hazard ratio of 0.26 (95% CI 0.16–0.41). The median of reproductive days was 55.50 in the high variability line whilst the median was 252.50 days for the low variability females. The homogeneous line presented important reproductive advantages suggesting higher robustness and animal welfare. Further research should confirm whether the findings presented here of a better performance in the low variability line could be properly applied to some livestock species.

Abstract
Selection of functional traits is a challenge for researchers, but an increasingly necessary objective due to the growing concern regarding animal welfare and overcoming the problems of reducing antibiotic use in rabbit production without undermining the animals’ productivity. The aim of this review is to discuss the genetic control of resistance to diseases, longevity and variability of birth weight within a litter, or litter size variability at birth within doe, describing the selection programmes and the first results from a multi-omics analysis of resistance/susceptibility to diseases. The heritability is around 0.13 for longevity, 0.01 for uniformity in birth weight, 0.09 for litter size variability and around 0.11 for disease resistance. Genetic correlations between functional traits and production traits are mostly no different from zero, or are moderately favourable in some cases. Six selection programmes developed in three countries are reviewed. Line foundation with high pressure for selection or divergent selection experiments are different methodologies used, and favourable responses to selection have been achieved. Genomics studies have revealed associations in regions related to immune system functionality and stress in lines selected for litter size variability. Knowledge of the role of gut microbiota in the rabbit’s immune response is very limited. A multi-omics approach can help determine the microbial mechanisms in regulation immunity genes of the host.

Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to estimate the heritability (h2), repeatability (r), and correlations (rŷiyi) in some traits of zootechnical interest in a population of New Zealand white rabbits of a tropical dry forest area. Materials and Methods: Three mating groups were formed, each one of 1 male and 70 females. The traits evaluated were litter size at birth (LB), born alive (BA), born dead (BD), litter weight born alive (LW), litter weight at weaning (LWW), weaning weight (WW), slaughter weight (SW), and carcass weight (CW). Weaning took place at 42 days, and the fattening phase lasted 60 ± 3 days. A descriptive statistical study was carried out on the study variables. Paternal heritability was estimated (hf2) and maternal (hm2), repeatability, rabbit index IC, and Pearson’s correlations (rŷiyi) between traits. The descriptive statistics showed high variation for the BD traits. Results: The values of the productivity found were similar to those presented in studies around the world. h2 presented magnitudes between low and medium. hf2 ranged between 0.09 and 0.42 and between 0.11 and 0.45 for hm2. In general, the values of hm2 were higher than the values of hf2. The r values for the traits LB, BA, LW, LWW, and SW presented low magnitude, while it was medium for WW and CW. From the values of r, IC was calculated for each of the rabbits, allowing their categorization, which will be used in future selection plans. rŷiyi among the variables ranged from −0.01 to 0.860. They were generally positive and mostly not significant (p > 0.05); they took a magnitude from low to moderate, except for the correlation between LB and BA. Conclusion: The production of rabbits under tropical conditions is similar to other reports. The genetic parameters evaluated were medium-to-low, indicating a robust non-additive gene and/or environmental effect.

Abstract
Ultrasound plays a considerable role in human and animal reproduction in terms of early detection of pregnancy, prediction of parturition time, and diagnosis of fetal abnormalities. The present study aimed to evaluate the ultrasound implementation for monitoring of gestation in mini-lop rabbits. Fifteen heads of pubertal does were selected and kept in normal conditions of feeding and temperature. Animals were mated with three bucks from the same breed. The pregnancy monitoring was begun from five days post-mating (dpm) to kindling using a 12.5 MHz ultrasonic transducer. The examinations were performed at fixed dpm for all does (5, 7, 12, 16, 20, and 26). Furthermore, randomly selected does (2-3 does per day; one doe was fixed) were subjected to daily ultrasound examination to estimate the relationship between the ultrasound biometrics with the gestational age (GA) and days to parturition. The pregnancy rate was 80%, and the mean number of live kits at birth was 4.2 in the present study. Based on the ultrasound records, the gestation length can be divided into three tertiles of pregnancy (TOP) in rabbits. The first TOP (0-10 dpm) was monitored by detecting and measuring the gestational sac diameter from 6 to 10 dpm. The 2nd TOP (11-12 dpm) was characterized by detection and measurement of Crown Rump Length and Fetal Heart Rate. From 15 to 20 dpm, bi-parietal diameter and head circumference were positively correlated with the GA (p-value < 0.05). Abdominal circumference and femur length were detectable and measurable during the 3rd TOP (21 dpm-kindling). Pregnancy was detected as early as six dpm with acceptable markers in mini-lop rabbits. Highly significant negative correlations were detected between days to parturition and the sonographic biometrics. Three abnormal fetuses were successfully detected and described, too.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to analyze the reproductive performance of does, growth of their kits, and chemical composition of their milk over nine consecutive parities in order to indicate the boundary of female reproductive profitability. The novelty of this study results from the combinations of three factors: extensive reproductive rhythm, commercial farming conditions, and a period of nine consecutive parities, showing the actual lifespan of a rabbit doe on commercial farms. The data was collected on 60 Hycole females kept at a commercial rabbit farm. Throughout the study, 32 does were excluded due to different reasons (e.g., excluded by means of selection-43.8% and mortalities-25.0%). The does were first inseminated at 28 weeks of age. Following artificial inseminations were conducted 14-15 days after each parturition. All kits were weaned at the age of 35 days. The following characteristics were analysed: body weight of rabbit does at artificial insemination, milk production per lactation, litter size, litter weight, average kit weight, and milk chemical composition. Rabbit does had a significant decrease in kindling rate between the eighth and the ninth parity (by 10.0 percentage points; p = 0.039). The litter size at weaning in the ninth parity was significantly lower to litters weaned at other analysed parities. The amount of milk produced per lactation was affected by the parity order (6.31-6.76 kg; p = 0.042). The litter weights on day 21 and 35 were the lowest at ninth parity. The content of total solids (TS), solids-not-fat, and fat was affected by the parity order on both analysed lactation days. The content of TS and fat in rabbit milk was characterized with a decreasing trend over the analysed period, on both lactation days. The results clearly indicate that rabbit does under extensive reproductive cycles characterize with a very good reproductive performance and can be successfully used for reproduction even up to the eighth parity. However, further research is needed if keeping them longer will not be profitable.

Abstract
The enhancement of rabbit female functional longevity, that is the ability to avoid voluntary culling, is a paramount aspect for the sustainability of meat rabbit production; this trait represents a direct indicator of female robustness. The objective of our study was to compare the functional longevity of five rabbit lines at their foundation and at fixed times during their selection processes. Four of them are maternal lines (A, V, H and LP) selected for litter size at weaning. The fifth line is the paternal line R, founded and selected for post-weaning daily gain from 28 to 63 days. The comparison at foundation involved the complete data set (from March 1980 to March 2013; records of 15,670 does) and pedigree (19,405 animals). Latter comparisons were made when all lines shared the same environmental and management conditions, from March 1997 to September 1998 and from March 2011 to September 2012. In these second comparisons, the same model as that used in the comparison at foundation was used, but now the additive effect was excluded, only data from the corresponding periods were considered. At their foundation, lines V, H and LP showed larger functional longevity than lines A and R, being LP line that with the longest productive life. In the latter comparisons, lines A and R still showing the lowest functional longevities. However, as the selection process evolves, the differences between these two lines and the others were reduced. It could be concluded that the average longevity of a population greatly depends on the criteria followed for its foundation. In addition, along the selection for litter size, the differences of longevity between lines tend to decrease, this is due to an unintended selection for functional longevity, since only offspring from females reaching three parturitions are selected as breeding animals for the next generation.

Abstract
In a diallel cross between four maternal lines of rabbits, the four maternal lines and the corresponding crossbred females (does) were evaluated concerning functional longevity, estimating their crossbreeding components. Sixteen genetic groups were produced by using four maternal lines of rabbit (A, V, H and LP (L)). The groups were distributed over 4 Spanish farms. In all farms, the V line was present as the reference group. A total of 7,211 does' longevity records were recorded. Using a Cox proportional hazard model of fixed effects, survival analysis was performed to study longevity analysing the hazard of death or culling. Does from lines A, H and V had similar risks of death or of being culled, and they were more susceptible compared with those from line L. The lowest hazard was associated with L line does. No significant differences were found between the average of all crosses and the V line except when comparing the V line to the cross between A and H lines, favouring the former (1.30 higher risk of replacement for AH animals). Significant differences between reciprocal crosses were observed between VH and HV, in favour of HV (0.72 of relative risk of replacement) and between LH and HL, in favour of HL (0.76 of relative risk). Line V had the highest risk due to the direct genetic effects, and these differences were significant with the lines H (1.40 of relative risk) and L (1.43 of relative risk). The differences in maternal genetic effects were small and not significant except between lines H and V in favour of V line (0.75 of relative risk). The estimated direct heterosis effects do not always follow the same trend but they showed the importance of the crossing between specialized lines to produce crossbred does for intensive meat rabbit production.

Abstract
Although the effects of sperm microbiota and sperm quality have been described previously, recent studies provide evidence that female genital modifications triggered by seminal components could be of significant importance to identify some disturbances associated with fertility. So, sperm microbiota could play a key role in sperm quality, contributing to fertilisation. To understand how sperm microbiota diversity is influenced by the host genetics, the symbiotic bacteria in four inbred lines raised in the same animal facility and their effects on sperm quality and fertility were analysed. Forty healthy rabbits from four selected Spanish commercial lines were used in this research (three based on litter performance, designated A, V and LP, and one selected for daily body weight gain, called R). Significant variations in the seminal concentration, morphology and some motion parameters were found among inbred lines, but sperm motility and viability were similar among inbred lines. After mating, inbred lines selected for litter size had the same fertility rate, significantly higher than inbred line selected for body weight (82 ± 3.3%, 79 ± 3.5% and 89 ± 4.5% versus 61 ± 3.7%, for the A, V and LP vs R lines, respectively, p < 0.05). Bacteria belonging to Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Fusobacteria and Bacteroidetes were identified in sperm microbiota. At genus level, the bacterial community composition in the sperm microbiota was influenced by host genetics. A total of 35, 16, 34, and 51 genera were accurately detected in the A, V, LP, and R lines, respectively. Moreover, Enhydrobacter, Ferruginibacter, Myroides Paracoccus, Rheinheimera, Tepidiphilus, Tetradesmus obliquus and Thauera genera were present only in the inbred lines selected for litter size. Moreover, the discriminant analysis revealed Lysinibacillus and Flavobacterium genera as potential biomarkers for fertility. Thus, these two genera may play a key role in fertility. Our results demonstrated the existence of a rabbit inbred line-specific variation in bacterial occurrence in sperm microbiota. Moreover, fertility differentials among inbred lines that were not predicted by routine semen analysis could be partly explained by the symbiotic state of the semen microbiota.
