Abstract
In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of Macleaya cordata extract (MCE) supplementation on performance, nutrient apparent digestibilities, plasma metabolites, and milk quality in dairy goats. Twenty-four lactating Guanzhong dairy goats (n = 24) were randomly divided into two groups (each containing 12 goats) in a 52-day trial: the CON group was fed a basal diet; the MCE group was fed a basal diet supplemented with 400 mg/kg MCE. The results indicated that the 4% fat corrected milk yield (4% FCM); uncorrected milk yield; milk-fat concentration; content of C4:0, C18:0, and C18:1n9c fatty acids in milk; and apparent digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) in the MCE group were significantly higher (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the lactoferrin (LTF), alpha-lactalbumin (α-La), and beta-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) of the milk and feed conversion rate (FCR) of the goats were significantly greater (p < 0.01) in the MCE group than in the CON group. In contrast, the somatic cell count (SCC) (p < 0.01), content of C14:0 fatty acids (p < 0.01) of milk, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations (p < 0.05) were significantly lower in the in the MCE goats. These results show that the feeding of MCE can increase the performance and apparent nutrient digestibility of fiber in dairy goats, improving the quality of goat milk.

Abstract
Introduction This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of fermented feed of Pennisetum giganteum (P. giganteum) on growth performance, oxidative stress, immunity and gastrointestinal microflora of Boer goats under thermal stress. Methods The study was conducted during 45 days using twenty 2 months Boer goats. The goats were randomly allocated into two groups: NPG (n = 10; normal P. giganteum) and FPG (n = 10; fermented feed of P. giganteum), and the ratio of concentrates to roughage was 3:2. Both groups of animals were kept in sheds and exposed to summer thermal stress from 10:00 h to 18:00 h (temperature and humidity index, THI > 78). At the end of the study, the animals were slaughtered and assessed for various characteristics. Results The findings from the study revealed that FPG-feeding significantly increased (p < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG, 48.18 g) and carcass weight (4.38 kg), while decreased (p < 0.01) average daily feed intake (ADFI, 0.74 kg/d; p < 0.01) and the feed:gain (F/G, 15.36) ratio. The CAT, GSH-Px activities and GSH in serum, liver and spleen, and the levels of IgA, IgG, IgM, IL-2, IL-4 and IL-1β in serum of FPG-fed goats were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those of NPG-feeding goats. Further, we found that FPG feed is rich in nutrients with Lactobacillus (65.83%) and Weissella (17.80%). Results for gastrointestinal microbiota composition showed that FPG-feeding significantly enhanced the abundance of Lactobacillus and unidentified Clostridiales, and reduced Anaerovibrio and Methanobrevibacter. Meanwhile, Spearman's correlation analysis showed that these microbiotas were closely related to the improvement of oxidative stress and immune indexes of goats. Discussion These results demonstrated that FPG-feeding not only reduces oxidative stress and improves ROS clearance to enhance antioxidant defense system, but also improves gastrointestinal microbiota to enhance immune function by overcoming the adverse effects of heat stress, and further improve growth performance of goats.

Abstract
Salix acmophylla Boiss. has a traditional role in several regions of the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. As with many other woody species, the development of methods for fast propagation and ex situ conservation of this species is needed. We describe for the first time a micropropagation protocol of three S. acmophylla ecotypes. The best results for shoot proliferation were obtained by culturing the shoot explants on Woody Plant Medium (WPM) containing benzyladenine (BA) 5 μM, but it was also observed that proliferation can be further enhanced by the separation of the shoot tip from the underlying internodes, followed by their respective culture on BA- or activated-charcoal-containing medium. Thidiazuron or zeatin did not enhance shoot proliferation. The rooting of shoots occurred spontaneously, but for the ecotype with a lower propensity for rooting, treatment with 5 μM indolebutyric acid (IBA) increased rooting percentage. Genetic differences were evident in rooting success, but not in shoot development of the tested ecotypes in response to in vitro cultural conditions.

Abstract
Few phytoremediation studies have been conducted under semi-arid conditions where plants are subjected to drought and/or salinity stress. Although the genus Salix is frequently used in phytoremediation, information regarding its tolerance of drought and salinity is limited. In the present study, Salix acmophylla Boiss. cuttings from three sites (Adom, Darom and Mea She'arim) were tested for tolerance to salinity stress by growing them hydroponically under either control or increasing NaCl concentrations corresponding to electrical conductivities of 3 and 6 dS m-1 in a 42-day greenhouse trial. Gas exchange parameters, chlorophyll fluorescence and concentration, and water-use efficiency were measured weekly and biomass was collected at the end of the trial. Root, leaf and stem productivity was significantly reduced in the Adom ecotype, suggesting that Darom and Mea She'arim are the more salt-tolerant of the three ecotypes. Net assimilation and stomatal conductance rates in salt-treated Adom were significantly reduced by the last week of the trial, coinciding with reduced intrinsic water use efficiency and chlorophyll a content and greater stomatal aperture. In contrast, early reductions in stomatal conductance and stomatal aperture in Darom and Mea She'arim stabilized, together with pigment concentrations, especially carotenoids. These results suggest that Darom and Mea She'arim are more tolerant to salt than Adom, and provide further phenotypic support to the recently published data demonstrating their genetic similarities and their usefulness in phytoremediation under saline conditions.

Abstract
Primary culture of mammary epithelial cells (MEC) was exposed to ethyl-acetate, chloroform and hexane extracts of Pistacia lentiscus (lentisk). The hexane extract contained mainly ethyl gallate whereas the chloroform extract contained mainly ethyl-gallate with smaller amount of gallic acid, and the ethyl-acetate extract contained mainly rutin, gallic acid and myricetin. Ethyl acetate extract increased secretion of protein and fat and improved mitochondrial activity. The enhancing effect on protein production was attributed to myricetin, one of the polyphenols in the ethyl-acetate extract whereas gallic acid did not affect protein production or secretion. Interestingly, exposure to the isolated polyphenols did not improve mitochondrial productivity and activity as effectively as exposure to the complete plant extract. The results indicated that polyphenols improve production of milk constituents by MEC, through different modes of action for different polyphenols suggesting an additive or even synergistic effect on production traits of mammary cells.

Abstract
We assessed the potential of Pistacia lentiscus (lentisk) phenolic compounds to enhance production of milk composition in lactating goats and caprine primary mammary epithelial cells (MEC). Damascus goats were given a lentisk infusion (LI) or fresh water (FW) to drink, in a crossover design. Milk from LI vs. FW goats was 0.43% richer in fat and 30% in omega 3 fatty acids. Lentisk infusion enhanced antioxidant capacity of plasma and milk by 37% and 30% respectively, and induced transcriptional activation of antioxidant genes. To assess the direct effect of polyphenols on milk quality in terms of composition and antioxidant capacity, we used plasma collected from goats fed hay (HP) or browsed on phenolic compounds-rich pasture (primarily lentisk; PP) as a conditioning medium for primary culture of MEC. PP increased 2-fold cellular triglyceride content and 2.4-fold intracellular casein, and increased ATP production and non-mitochondrial oxygen consumption. Taken together, the results imply that lentisk phenolic compounds affect blood, MEC and milk oxidative status, which increase fat production by the mammary gland.
