Highlighting the Importance of Characterization Techniques Employed in Adsorption Using Metal–Organic Frameworks for Water Treatment

The accumulation of toxic heavy metal ions continues to be a global concern due to their adverse effects on the health of human beings and animals. Adsorption technology has always been a preferred method for the removal of these pollutants from wastewater due to its cost-effectiveness and simplicity. Hence, the development of highly efficient adsorbents as a result of the advent of novel materials with interesting structural properties remains to be the ultimate objective to improve the adsorption efficiencies of this method. As such, advanced materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that are highly porous crystalline materials have been explored as potential adsorbents for capturing metal ions. However, due to their diverse structures and tuneable surface functionalities, there is a need to find efficient characterization techniques to study their atomic arrangements for a better understanding of their adsorption capabilities on heavy metal ions. Moreover, the existence of various species of heavy metal ions and their ability to form complexes have triggered the need to qualitatively and quantitatively determine their concentrations in the environment. Hence, it is crucial to employ techniques that can provide insight into the structural arrangements in MOF composites as well as their possible interactions with heavy metal ions, to achieve high removal efficiency and adsorption capacities. Thus, this work provides an extensive review and discussion of various techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller theory, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy employed for the characterization of MOF composites before and after their interaction with toxic metal ions. The review further looks into the analytical methods (i.e., inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and atomic absorption spectroscopy) used for the quantification of heavy metal ions present in wastewater treatment.

Oxidation mechanism of porous Zr₂Fe used as a hydrogen getter

We determined the oxidation mechanism of porous ST-198, which mainly comprises Zr2Fe. Oxidation kinetics depended on temperature, oxygen partial pressure, and oxidation extent. The passivation role of oxidation in hydrogen scavenging is probably due to the development of a surface oxide, independent of oxygen concentration. Zr2Fe would be a superior hydrogen getter in oxygen-contaminated environments at high temperatures, as most oxygen will be consumed at the outer shell by mass transfer limitations, protecting the bulk of the getter for hydrogen scavenging.

Continuous flow thermal cycler microchip for DNA cycle sequencing

We report here on the use of a polymer-based continuous flow thermal cycler (CFTC) microchip for Sanger cycle sequencing using dye terminator chemistry. The CFTC chip consisted of a 20-loop spiral microfluidic channel hot-embossed into polycarbonate (PC) that had three well-defined temperature zones poised at 95, 55, and 60 degrees C for denaturation, renaturation, and DNA extension, respectively. The sequencing cocktail was hydrodynamically pumped through the microreactor channel at different linear velocities ranging from 1 to 12 mm/s. At a linear velocity of 4 mm/s resulting in a 36-s extension time, a read length of >600 bp could be obtained in a total reaction time of 14.6 min. Further increases in the flow rate resulted in a reduction in the total reaction time but also produced a decrease in the sequencing read length. The CFTC chip could be reused for subsequent sequencing runs (>30) with negligible amounts of carryover contamination or degradation in the sequencing read length. The CFTC microchip was subsequently coupled to a solid-phase reversible immobilization (SPRI) microchip made from PC for purification of the DNA sequencing ladders (i.e., removal of excess dye-labeled dideoxynucleotides, DNA template, and salts) prior to gel electrophoresis. Coupling of the CFTC chip to the SPRI microchip showed read lengths similar to that obtained from benchtop instruments but did not require manual manipulation of the cycle sequencing reactions following amplification.

Net Analyte Signal Based Statistical Quality Control

Net analyte signal statistical quality control (NAS-SQC) is a new methodology to perform multivariate product quality monitoring based on the net analyte signal approach. The main advantage of NAS-SQC is that the systematic variation in the product due to the analyte (or property) of interest is separated from the remaining systematic variation due to all other compounds in the matrix. This enhances the ability to flag products out of statistical control. Using control charts, the analyte content, variation of other compounds, and residual variation can be monitored. As an example, NAS-SQC is used to appreciate the control content uniformity of a commercially available pharmaceutical tablet product measured with near-infrared spectroscopy. Using the NAS chart, the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) content is easily monitored for new tablets. However, since quality is a multivariate property, other quality parameters of the tablets are also monitored simultaneously. It will be demonstrated that, besides the API content, the water content of the tablets as well as the homogeneity of the other compounds is monitored.

Ion Pair Formation as a Possible Mechanism for the Enhancement Effect of Lauric Acid on the Transdermal Permeation of Ondansetron

Transdermal application can be an alternative drug delivery route for ondansetron, an antiemetic drug. Previous studies found that fatty acids, namely oleic and lauric, were the most effective penetration enhancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the formation of an ion pair between ondansetron and lauric acid as a possible mechanism of its enhancing action. Several techniques were used to reveal the formation of an ion pair complex. Partitioning experiments, where the n-octanol/water coefficient was measured, showed an increase in the distribution coefficient in the presence of the acid, possibly as a result of the formation of more lipophilic ion pairs between the charged molecules of ondansetron and lauric acid. Further evidence of complex formation between ondansetron and lauric acid, was gained from the 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR) spectra of ondansetron, lauric acid, and their mixture (molar ratio 1:1). The NMR spectra revealed alterations to the magnetic environment of the carbon atoms adjacent to the ionized group, which are the carbonyl group of the acid and the nitrogen of the imidazole ring of ondansetron. This evidence substantiates the theory of ion pair formation. Finally, thermal analysis of the binary mixtures of ondansetron and lauric acid revealed the formation of an additional compound, with different melting point from pure ondansetron and lauric acid, which is thermodynamically favored.

Recent developments in food characterization and adulteration detection: technique-oriented perspectives

This review covers mainly publications that appeared in Analytical Abstracts (Royal Society of Chemistry) from January 1990 to February 2001. The number of publications on this topic continues to grow, and during the past three years (1998-2000) about 150 reviews and/or overviews have been published in the area of food. Numerous techniques and food matrices or chemical components are presented and discussed in these reviews. The present review is intentionally limited to eight techniques or classes of techniques and intends to be a "technique by technique" presentation of "what was used" or "what is used" to characterize food products and to detect their possible adulteration. The present review focuses on the following techniques: microscopic analysis; HPLC; GC, GC-(MS, FTIR); UV-visible spectrophotometry; AAS/AES, ICP-(AES, MS); IRMS, GC-IRMS, GC-C-IRMS; DSC; IR, mid-IR, and NMR (202 references). Emphasis is placed as much as possible on chemometrical treatment of analytical data, which are commonly used to achieve the final objective, either food characterization or adulteration detection. Finally, a brief description is given of the new generation of analytical systems that combine powerful analytical techniques and powerful computer software for a best extraction of the information from analytical data.

Estimating realistic confidence intervals for the activation energy determined from thermoanalytical measurements

A statistical procedure is proposed for estimating realistic confidence intervals for the activation energy determined by using an advanced isoconversional method. Nine sets of five thermogravimetric measurements have been produced for the process of gassification of ammonium nitrate at five different heating rates. Independent estimates of the confidence intervals for the activation energy have been obtained from these data sets. Agreement with these independent estimates demonstrates that the proposed statistical procedure is capable of adequately estimating the actual uncertainty in the activation energy determined from a small number of measurements. The resulting averaged relative errors in the activation energy were found to be 26, 21, and 17% for three, four, and five heating rate estimates, respectively.

Separation of double- and single-stranded DNA restriction fragments: capillary electrophoresis with polymer solutions under alkaline conditions

Capillary electrophoresis in buffers containing hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) was used to separate double- and single-stranded DNA restriction fragments under neutral and alkaline conditions in epoxy-coated capillaries. It was found that better resolution was achieved using highly entangled HEC solutions for a narrow range of DNA fragment sizes, while lower resolution was obtained over a wide separation range using diluted HEC solutions. Optimal resolution of these DNA fragments was obtained using buffers containing 0.5% HEC at pH 11 with plate numbers exceeding 3 x 10(6) plates/m. It was also found that the diffusion coefficients and electrophoretic mobilities of DNA fragments decreased with increasing pH. This may indicate a more extended DNA conformation and, therefore, enhancement of transient entanglement coupling between DNA and HEC polymers under alkaline condition. At pH 12, ss-DNA were well separated in entangled HEC solutions; however, the resolution of ss-DNA was significantly decreased in diluted polymer solution.
