Deployment of a Carbon Isotope Ratiometer for the Monitoring of CO2 Sequestration Leakage

Monitoring the movement of artificially injected CO2 at a shallow experimental site in Korea using carbon isotopes

The greenhouse effect is closely related to elevated atmospheric CO₂ concentrations and therefore, carbon capture and storage (CCS) has attracted attention worldwide as a method for preventing the release of CO₂ into the atmosphere, which highlights the importance of monitoring CO₂ released from subsurface deposits. In this study, CO₂ gas with a δ¹³C value of -30‰ was injected into soil through pipes installed at a depth of 2.5 m, and samples of CO₂ gas released from the soil surface and three soil depths were collected from September 2015 to March 2016 to estimate subsurface CO₂ movement. Before and after CO₂ injection, the δ¹³C values of CO₂ released from the soil surface ranged from -24.5 to -13.4‰ (average -20.2 ± 2.1‰, n = 25) and from -31.6 to -11.9‰ (average -23.2 ± 4.3‰, n = 49), respectively. The results indicated that the leakage of injected CO₂ was successfully detected at the surface. The δ¹³C values were visualized using an interpolation map to estimate the subsurface CO₂ distribution, which confirmed that diffusion of the injected CO₂ gas extended to the soil zone where CO₂ was not injected. Additionally, variation in δ¹³C for soil CO₂ was detected at the three soil depths (15, 30, and 60 cm), where the values were -16.1, -20.0, and -22.1‰, respectively. Different δ¹³C values horizontally and vertically indicated that soil heterogeneity led to different CO₂ migration pathways and rates. We suggest that the carbon isotope ratio of CO₂ is an effective tool for concurrently monitoring CO₂ leakage on and under surface in a soil zone if a thorough baseline study is carried out in the field.

Insight into a direct carbon dioxide effect on denitrification and denitrifying bacterial communities in estuarine sediment

With the elevation of atmospheric CO₂ content, the potential effects of CO₂ on organisms and various environmental processes have gained increasing concern. Most previous studies on denitrification have been conducted on ecosystems comprising plants, soils and microbes, but they have ignored the direct effect of CO₂ on denitrification and denitrifying bacterial communities. Here, by excluding the effects of plants, we found that both short- and long-term exposure to CO₂ directly inhibited the denitrification process, and caused the total nitrogen removal efficiency to decrease by up to 37%. Compared with the control, long-term exposure to CO₂ (30,000 ppm) also caused >276-fold increase in N₂O emissions, and significantly inhibited the decomposition process. Enzymatic and qPCR assays showed that CO₂ decreased the denitrifying enzymes activity (DEA) and the copy numbers of denitrifying genes, which directly resulted in the inhibitory effect of CO₂ on denitrification process. Further study indicated that adverse effect of CO₂ on DEA and denitrifying genes were caused by reducing the relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria. Moreover, the relative abundance of fermenting bacteria also decreased as CO₂ concentration increased, which might result in insufficient liable carbon for the activity of denitrifying bacteria, and ultimately exacerbate the negative denitrification performance. Overall, this study suggests that, in the absence of plants, CO₂ could directly affect the denitrifying and fermenting bacterial community, and inhibit denitrification and decomposition processes, which is detrimental to sediment nitrogen and carbon cycles.

Inherent Tracers for Carbon Capture and Storage in Sedimentary Formations: Composition and Applications

Inherent tracers-the "natural" isotopic and trace gas composition of captured CO2 streams-are potentially powerful tracers for use in CCS technology. This review outlines for the first time the expected carbon isotope and noble gas compositions of captured CO2 streams from a range of feedstocks, CO2-generating processes, and carbon capture techniques. The C-isotope composition of captured CO2 will be most strongly controlled by the feedstock, but significant isotope fractionation is possible during capture; noble gas concentrations will be controlled by the capture technique employed. Comparison with likely baseline data suggests that CO2 generated from fossil fuel feedstocks will often have δ(13)C distinguishable from storage reservoir CO2. Noble gases in amine-captured CO2 streams are likely to be low concentration, with isotopic ratios dependent on the feedstock, but CO2 captured from oxyfuel plants may be strongly enriched in Kr and Xe which are potentially valuable subsurface tracers. CO2 streams derived from fossil fuels will have noble gas isotope ratios reflecting a radiogenic component that will be difficult to distinguish in the storage reservoir, but inheritance of radiogenic components will provide an easily recognizable signature in the case of any unplanned migration into shallow aquifers or to the surface.

Field-based stable isotope analysis of carbon dioxide by mid-infrared laser spectroscopy for carbon capture and storage monitoring

A newly developed isotope ratio laser spectrometer for CO2 analyses has been tested during a tracer experiment at the Ketzin pilot site (northern Germany) for CO2 storage. For the experiment, 500 tons of CO2 from a natural CO2 reservoir was injected in supercritical state into the reservoir. The carbon stable isotope value (δ(13)C) of injected CO2 was significantly different from background values. In order to observe the breakthrough of the isotope tracer continuously, the new instruments were connected to a stainless steel riser tube that was installed in an observation well. The laser instrument is based on tunable laser direct absorption in the mid-infrared. The instrument recorded a continuous 10 day carbon stable isotope data set with 30 min resolution directly on-site in a field-based laboratory container during a tracer experiment. To test the instruments performance and accuracy the monitoring campaign was accompanied by daily CO2 sampling for laboratory analyses with isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). The carbon stable isotope ratios measured by conventional IRMS technique and by the new mid-infrared laser spectrometer agree remarkably well within analytical precision. This proves the capability of the new mid-infrared direct absorption technique to measure high precision and accurate real-time stable isotope data directly in the field. The laser spectroscopy data revealed for the first time a prior to this experiment unknown, intensive dynamic with fast changing δ(13)C values. The arrival pattern of the tracer suggest that the observed fluctuations were probably caused by migration along separate and distinct preferential flow paths between injection well and observation well. The short-term variances as observed in this study might have been missed during previous works that applied laboratory-based IRMS analysis. The new technique could contribute to a better tracing of the migration of the underground CO2 plume and help to ensure the long-term integrity of the reservoir.

Excretion kinetics of 13C-urea breath test: influences of endogenous CO2 production and dose recovery on the diagnostic accuracy of Helicobacter pylori infection

We report for the first time the excretion kinetics of the percentage dose of (13)C recovered/h ((13)C-PDR %/h) and cumulative PDR, i.e. c-PDR (%) to accomplish the highest diagnostic accuracy of the (13)C-urea breath test ((13)C-UBT) for the detection of Helicobacter pylori infection without any risk of diagnostic errors using an optical cavity-enhanced integrated cavity output spectroscopy (ICOS) method. An optimal diagnostic cut-off point for the presence of H. pylori infection was determined to be c-PDR (%) = 1.47 % at 60 min, using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis to overcome the "grey zone" containing false-positive and false-negative results of the (13)C-UBT. The present (13)C-UBT exhibited 100 % diagnostic sensitivity (true-positive rate) and 100 % specificity (true-negative rate) with an accuracy of 100 % compared with invasive endoscopy and biopsy tests. Our c-PDR (%) methodology also manifested both diagnostic positive and negative predictive values of 100 %, demonstrating excellent diagnostic accuracy. We also observed that the effect of endogenous CO2 production related to basal metabolic rates in individuals was statistically insignificant (p = 0.78) on the diagnostic accuracy. However, the presence of H. pylori infection was indicated by the profound effect of urea hydrolysis rate (UHR). Our findings suggest that the current c-PDR (%) is a valid and sufficiently robust novel approach for an accurate, specific, fast and noninvasive diagnosis of H. pylori infection, which could routinely be used for large-scale screening purposes and diagnostic assessment, i.e. for early detection and follow-up of patients.

Variable mesophyll conductance revisited: theoretical background and experimental implications

The CO(2) concentration at the site of carboxylation inside the chloroplast stroma depends not only on the stomatal conductance, but also on the conductance of CO(2) between substomatal cavities and the site of CO(2) fixation. This conductance, commonly termed mesophyll conductance (g(m) ), significantly constrains the rate of photosynthesis. Here we show that estimates of g(m) are influenced by the amount of respiratory and photorespiratory CO(2) from the mitochondria diffusing towards the chloroplasts. This results in an apparent CO(2) and oxygen sensitivity of g(m) that does not imply a change in intrinsic diffusion properties of the mesophyll, but depends on the ratio of mitochondrial CO(2) release to chloroplast CO(2) uptake. We show that this effect (1) can bias the estimation of the CO(2) photocompensation point and non-photorespiratory respiration in the light; (2) can affect the estimates of ribulose 1·5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) kinetic constants in vivo; and (3) results in an apparent obligatory correlation between stomatal conductance and g(m) . We further show that the amount of photo(respiratory) CO(2) that is refixed by Rubisco can be directly estimated through measurements of g(m) .

Monitoring of a simulated CO(2) leakage in a shallow aquifer using stable carbon isotopes

Artificial carbon dioxide leakage into a shallow aquifer was monitored using stable carbon isotope measurements at a field site near the town of Wittstock, Brandenburg, Germany. Approximately 400 000 L of CO(2) were injected into a shallow aquifer at 18 m depth over 10 days. The (13)C/ (12)C ratios of the CO(2) were measured in both groundwater and soil gas samples to monitor the distribution of the injected CO(2) plume and to evaluate the feasibility and reliability of this approach to detect potential CO(2) leakage, for example from carbon capture and storage (CCS) sites. The isotopic composition of the injected CO(2) (δ(13)C -30.5 ‰) was differentiable from the background CO(2) (δ(13)C -21.9 ‰) and the artificial CO(2) plume was monitored over a period spanning more than 204 days. The results demonstrate that this stable isotope monitoring approach can be used to identify CO(2) sources and detect potential CO(2) migration from CCS sites into overlying shallow aquifers or even into the upper subsurface. A significant difference between the isotope ratios of the natural background and the injected CO(2) is required for this monitoring approach to be effective.

Feasibility of a perfluorocarbon tracer based network to support monitoring, verification, and accounting of sequestered CO₂

Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) will act as a bridging technology necessary to facilitate a transition from fossil fuels to a sustainable energy based economy. The Department of Energy (DOE) target leak rate for sequestration reservoirs is 1% of total sequestered CO(2) over the lifetime of the reservoir. This is 0.001% per year for a 1000 year lifetime of a storage reservoir. Effective detection of CO(2) leaks at the surface may require incorporation of a tracer tag into the sequestered CO(2). We applied a simple Gaussian Plume model to predict dispersion of a direct leak into the atmosphere and used the results to examine the requirements for designing a perfluorocarbon (PFT) monitoring network and tracer tagging strategy. Careful consideration must be given to the climate implications of using these compounds. The quantity of PFTs needed for tagging sequestered CO(2) is too large to be practical for routine monitoring. Tagging at a level that will result in 1.5 times background at a sampler 1 km from a leak of 0.01% per year will require 625 kg per year of PFT. This is a leak rate 10 times greater than the 1000 year DOE requirement and will require 19 tons of injected PFT over the 30 year lifetime of a 1000 mega watt coal fired plant. The utility of PFTs or any other tracer will be lost if the background levels are allowed to rise indiscriminately. A better use of PFTs is as a tool in sequestration research. Instead, geological surveys of sequestration sites will be necessary to locate potential direct pathways and develop targeted monitoring strategies. A global agreement on the use of tracers for monitoring CCS projects should be developed.
