Accelerating Sample Preparation for the Analysis of Complex Samples

Sample preparation (that is, separation and enrichment) is a critical step in complex sample analysis that affects the sensitivity, selectivity, speed, and accuracy of analytical results, especially in rapid analysis. From chaos to order, the entropy reduction procedure of sample preparation cannot happen spontaneously. Given that sample preparation consumes over two thirds of analysis time, sample preparation becomes the bottleneck issue in analytical chemistry, resulting in the urgent necessity of developing accelerated sample preparation techniques.

Nitrogen-rich carbon nitride as solid-phase microextraction fiber coating for high-efficient pretreatment of polychlorinated biphenyls from environmental samples

A two-dimensional nitrogen-rich carbon nitrogen (C₃N₅) material was prepared via a facile high temperature thermal polymerization. For the first time, the C₃N₅ was used as fiber coating of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) to extract and preconcentrate polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) before gas chromatography (GC) analysis. The X-ray diffraction, N₂ adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were performed to investigate structure, functional groups, thermal stability, bonding type, element composition, and atomic ratio of C₃N₅. The two-dimensional planar stacking structure was further verified by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Five PCBs including PCB-4, PCB-12, PCB-29, PCB-52 and PCB-101 were selected as targets to evaluate performance of SPME fiber. Under the optimal conditions, the method showed a good linear range from 0.01 to 1000 ng/mL with the correlation coefficients (R²) higher than 0.9990. Enrichment factors of the method were obtained from 2045 to 3080. The limits of detection (LODs, S/N = 3) and limits of quantification (LOQs, S/N = 10) were calculated as 0.0031-0.0111 ng/mL and 0.01-0.05 ng/mL, respectively. The precisions of intra-day and inter-day were obtained with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) at 1.5-6.6% and 0.8-6.9%, respectively. The fiber-to-fiber producibility was achieved with RSDs ranged from 3.5% to 11.4%. The method was applied to detect PCBs in river water and soil samples. The contents were calculated at 0.040-0.147 ng/mL in water and 0.520-3.218 ng/g in soil. The C₃N₅ as SPME fiber coating material may be applied to extract and preconcentrate other environmental pollutants which have similar chemical structures with PCBs.

Reduced graphene oxide coated nickel foam for stir bar sorptive extraction of benzotriazole ultraviolet absorbents from environmental water

The use of porous carrier and coating sorbents in stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) contributes to the improvement of extraction efficiency and dynamics. Herein, porous nickel foam (NF) with large surface area and magnetic property was used as the carrier of stir bar. NF was added into the mixture of graphene oxide (GO) and reducing agent, and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) coating was obtained on the surface of NF substrate by in situ hydrothermal reduction. The characterization results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray power-diffraction and scanning electron microscope showed that GO was partially reduced into RGO, and the RGO coating was uniformly loaded on the NF surface. The obtained RGO-NF composite was used as the stir bar coating for the analysis of six benzotriazole (BZTs) UV absorbents. The extraction efficiency was between 48 and 64% for six BZTs. RGO-NF stir bar exhibited faster adsorption/desorption kinetics than commercial polydimethylsiloxane coated stir bar (50 min vs 120/360 min) due to its porous structure and large specific surface area. On this basis, a method of RGO-NF coated stir bar sorptive extraction combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-DAD was established for the determination of six BZTs. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection were 0.33-0.50 μg/L for six target BZTs, and the linear range was 1-100 μg/L. The proposed method merits good ability to resist matrix and was used to analyze six BZTs in environmental water samples. The recoveries of target BZTs were obtained within 83.0-112% in the spiked East Lake water and 97.0-111% in the spiked Yangtze River water, respectively.

Advanced super-hydrophobic polymer-based porous absorbents for the treatment of oil-polluted water

The threat of environmental pollution caused by spilled oil is rapidly increasing along with the expansion of oil exploration, the development of maritime activities and industrial growth. Oil spill incidents usually affect seriously the ecosystem and human life. Therefore, the treatment and recovery of the oil spill have been considered as an ultra-important issue to protect the environment and to minimize its negative impacts on socio-economic activities. Among methods of oil spill recovery, porous materials have emerged as potential absorbents possessing the capacity of absorbing spilled oil at a fast rate, high adsorption capacity, good selectivity, and high reusability. In this review paper, two types of polymer-based porous absorbents modified surface and structure were introduced for the treatment strategy of the oil-polluted water. In addition, the absorption mechanism and factors affecting the adsorption capacity for oils and organic solvents were thoroughly analyzed. More importantly, characteristics of polymer-based porous materials were discussed in detail based on microstructure analysis, absorption efficiency, and reusability. In general, this paper has provided an overview and a comprehensive assessment of the use of advanced polymer-based porous materials for the treatment of oil-polluted water, although the impacts of environmental factors such as wind, wave, and temperature should be further investigated in the future.

Triazine-based covalent organic polymer: A promising coating for solid-phase microextraction

Advancement of novel coating materials for solid-phase microextraction is highly needed for sample pretreatment. Herein, a triazine-based covalent organic polymer was constructed from the monomers of cyanuric chloride and trans-stilbene via the Friedel-Crafts reaction and thereafter used as a solid-phase microextraction fiber coating for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their nitrated and oxygenated derivatives. The newly-developed solid-phase microextraction method coupled with gas chromatography/flame ionization detection gives enhancement factors of 548-1236 and limits of detection of 0.40-2.81 ng/L for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives. The one fiber precision for five replicate determinations of the analytes and the fiber-to-fiber precision with three parallel prepared fibers, expressed as relative standard deviations, was in the range of 4.6-9.4% and 6.2-10.9%, respectively. The relative recoveries of the analytes for environmental water samples were in the range of 88.6-106.4% with the relative standard deviations ranging from 4.0 to 11.7% (n = 5).

Facile synthesis of uniform spherical covalent organic frameworks for determination of neonicotinoid insecticides

A uniform spherical structure covalent organic framework (TAPA-BPDA-COF) was prepared by a facile method at room temperature with tris(4-aminophenyl)amine (TAPA) and 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxaldehyde (BPDA) as building blocks. Based on the solid phase extraction with the TAPA-BPDA-COF as the sorbent and high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection, a sensitive analytical method was established for the determination of four neonicotinoid insecticides from water and honey samples. Under the optimum conditions, good linear response for the quantification of the analytes was achieved in the range of 0.3-50.0 ng mL^-1 for water samples and in the range of 8.0-500.0 ng g^-1 for honey samples. The method recoveries fell in the range of 80.0-121.9% with RSDs less than 7.6%. The limits of detection at the signal to noise ratio of 3 were measured to be in the range of 0.08-0.12 ng mL^-1 for water samples and 2.6-3.3 ng g^-1 for honey samples, depending on compounds.

Stronger impacts of long-term relative to short-term exposure to carbon nanomaterials on soil bacterial communities

Environmental impacts of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) have been attracting increasing concerns in recent years. Knowledge on how short-term exposure to CNMs influences soil microbial communities is available. However, little is known about the possible difference in effects of long-term versus short-term exposure of CNMs on soil microbial communities. In this study, we systematically compared effects of fullerene (C₆₀), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SW), and graphene (GR) on soil bacterial communities over short (30 d) and long (360 d) term exposure durations. Our findings revealed that short-term exposure to all CNMs significantly increased the alpha diversity of soil bacterial communities. SW and GR exposure for 360 d relative to that for 30 d more significantly decreased their alpha diversity. Compared to short-term exposure, a long term exposure to CNMs more strongly altered the beta diversity of soil bacterial communities. LEfSe analysis showed that, GR relative to C₆₀ and SW exposure more strongly altered soil bacterial community composition especially for long-term duration at various taxonomic levels; more taxa were also identified by LEfSe analysis as biomarkers upon long-term GR exposure. More OTUs were affected by long-term GR exposure. These differences resulted from both distinct physicochemical properties of various CNMs and their exposure durations.

Mechanical power driven SPME-SERS ultra-fast detection of illegal additives in aquaculture water

A dual-function (extraction and detection) porous silver fiber with high enhancement effect was constructed based on a convenient electrochemical etching method. The prepared silver fiber not only had high enrichment capacity and good Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) performance but also had good laser stability and uniformity. A strategy combining mechanical power and integration of solid phase extraction (SPME) and SERS detection was used. Driven by mechanical power, the analyte malachite green (MG) was enriched on the prepared silver fiber after 40 seconds, which can realize an ultra-fast and sensitive detection with a detection limit of 8.48 × 10-9 M. At the same time, this fiber can be regenerated after being treated with NaBH4. The silver fiber can be used for the detection of MG and CV after being immersed in NaBH4 solution for a few minutes. After 5 cycles of processing, the measurement signals of the silver fiber can reach 70% of the initial signals. The mechanical power driven SPME-SERS (MPD-SPME-SERS) integrated detection method can be used to analyse aquaculture water within 1 minute with a good linear relationship.

Insights into the structure-performance relationships of extraction materials in sample preparation for chromatography

Sample preparation is one of the most crucial steps in analytical processes. Commonly used methods, including solid-phase extraction, dispersive solid-phase extraction, dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction, and solid-phase microextraction, greatly depend on the extraction materials. In recent decades, a vast number of materials have been studied and used in sample preparation for chromatography. Due to the unique structural properties, extraction materials significantly improve the performance of extraction devices. Endowing extraction materials with suitable structural properties can shorten the pretreatment process and improve the extraction efficiency and selectivity. To understand the structure-performance relationships of extraction materials, this review systematically summarizes the structural properties, including the pore size, pore shape, pore volume, accessibility of active sites, specific surface area, functional groups and physicochemical properties. The mechanisms by which the structural properties influence the extraction performance are also elucidated in detail. Finally, three principles for the design and synthesis of extraction materials are summarized. This review can provide systematic guidelines for synthesizing extraction materials and preparing extraction devices.

The effect of different binders on the comprehensive performance of solid phase microextraction fiber

Binders are significant components for the preparation of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers. However, little attention has been paid to the effect of different binders. Considering their diverse properties, in this work, we select three kinds of commonly used binders including polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and Nafion, as well as introduce a new binder of poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to synthetically study the influence of binders. By using the commercial active carbons (ACs) with different binders, four SPME fibers with uniform morphologies and comparative thicknesses (i.e., ACs-PDMS-coated, ACs-PAN-coated, ACs-Nafion-coated and ACs-PVDF-coated fibers) have been prepared successfully. The effect of binders on the pore structure of ACs is firstly investigated. It is found that PDMS and PAN would cause pore blocking, and the specific surface area of ACs coatings decreases from 1362 m² g^-1 to 280 and 196 m² g^-1, respectively. While the specific surface area of ACs-PVDF composite remains 940 m² g^-1. Based on SPME, the influences of acid/alkali, high temperature and matrix towards different fibers are further systematically surveyed. Finally, the enrichment performance of prepared fibers towards various organic pollutants is preliminarily discussed. The comparison results show that PVDF demonstrates outstanding stability in all aspects. Therefore, PVDF might be an excellent candidate for the preparation of SPME fiber. Moreover, all obtained results are expected to provide the reference value for the further development of novel SPME fibers.

In-situ layer-by-layer synthesized TpPa-1 COF solid-phase microextraction fiber for detecting sex hormones in serum

The secretion disorder of sex hormones is the source that leads to the occurrence of many diseases such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), hyperandrogenism and so on. There exist physiological changes in human body when slight fluctuations in concentrations of sex hormones happen. Therefore, it's of great significance for accurate detection of sex hormones in human body. In this work, TpPa-1 COF solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber was prepared using high-efficient in-situ synthesis strategy and coupled with HPLC-MS/MS to detect three sex hormones, including Progesterone (P), testosterone (T) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in human serum. The thickness of the coating reached 7 μm within 2 h. Under the optimal conditions, the established method presented low limit of detections (LODs, ≤ 0.75 ng/mL), wide linear ranges (0.100-100 ng mL^-1) and good reproducibility, and three sex hormones (T, P, DHEA) were successfully detected and quantified in human serum. In conclusion, the established SPME method presented high-efficient fiber preparation and good analytical performances of sex hormone detection, therefore was in great potential for application in clinical.

Recent Advances in the Extraction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Environmental Samples

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) comprise a group of chemical compounds consisting of two or more fused benzene rings. PAHs exhibit hydrophobicity and low water solubility, while some of their members are toxic substances resistant to degradation. Due to their low levels in environmental matrices, a preconcentration step is usually required for their determination. Nowadays, there is a wide variety of sample preparation techniques, including micro-extraction techniques (e.g., solid-phase microextraction and liquid phase microextraction) and miniaturized extraction techniques (e.g., dispersive solid-phase extraction, magnetic solid-phase extraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, fabric phase sorptive extraction etc.). Compared to the conventional sample preparation techniques, these novel techniques show some benefits, including reduced organic solvent consumption, while they are time and cost efficient. A plethora of adsorbents, such as metal-organic frameworks, carbon-based materials and molecularly imprinted polymers, have been successfully coupled with a wide variety of extraction techniques. This review focuses on the recent advances in the extraction techniques of PAHs from environmental matrices, utilizing novel sample preparation approaches and adsorbents.

Flower-like architecture magnesia-carbon composite material for highly sensitive solid-phase microextraction

The development of carbon sorbents with high specific surface areas remains a hot research field in analytical community. In the current study, a novel three-dimensional hierarchical flower-like magnesium glycollate sphere was synthesized. Then, the obtained magnesium glycollate sphere was carbonized to obtain magnesia-carbon composite material with enhanced performance. The flower-like carbon material exhibited good adsorption capacity towards polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons due to the large surface area, the strong π-π interaction force and hydrophobic forces. The flower-like MgO&C material was used as a solid-phase microextraction fiber coating for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in real river water samples. Good linearity (5-1000 ng L^-1), satisfactory relatively recoveries (86.2-113.5%) and low limits of detections (0.01-0.20 ng L^-1) were obtained under the optimized conditions.

Rational integration of porous organic polymer and multiwall carbon nanotube for the microextraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

By integration of benzene-constructed porous organic polymer (KBF) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), a MWCNT-KBF hybrid material was constructed through in situ knitting benzene with formaldehyde dimethyl acetal in the presence of MWCNTs to form a network. MWCNT-KBF was then adopted as a novel solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating. Coupled to gas chromatography-flame ionization detection, the MWCNT-KBF-assisted SPME method showed large enhancement factors (483-2066), low limits of detection (0.04-0.12 μg L^-1), good linearity (0.13-50 μg L^-1), and acceptable reproducibility (4.2-10.2%) for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The method recoveries of seven PAHs were in the range 80.1-116.3%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 3.5 to 11.9%. The SPME method was successfully applied to the determination of PAHs in river, pond, rain, and waste water, providing a good alternative for monitoring trace level of PAHs in environmental water. Three-dimensional pompon-like Au/ZnO porous microspheres as solid phase microextraction coating for determination of volatile fatty acids from foot odor

In this study, facile fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) pompon-like gold/zinc oxide (Au/ZnO) porous microspheres by hydrothermal procedure was investigated. These microspheres were utilized as solid phase microextraction (SPME) coating for determination of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from foot odor coupling with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). SEM and TEM characterizations showed that as-prepared material was composed of 1D porous nanowires and presented a uniform coating on stainless-steel wire. The extraction of VFAs including propanoic acid, butyric acid, isobutanoic acid, isovaleric acid, hexanoic acid, and heptylic acid was carried out by headspace model after sampling from human foot using cotton wool strips. Following optimization of extraction parameters including extraction temperature and time and desorption temperature and time, the as-prepared SPME coating presented better extraction efficiency than commercial DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber towards all the VFAs due to its excellent properties. Under the optimized conditions, the method exhibited good linearity (0.5-200 ng) with regression coefficients (R²) ranging from 0.9836 to 0.9981 for all the analytes. The limits of detection ranged from 0.017 to 0.098 ng. Single fiber repeatability varied from 6.5% to 11.2% and the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility ranged from 8.6% to 12.3%. The proposed method was successfully applied for extraction and determination of VFAs from foot odor after sampling using cotton wool strips.

Determination of Volatile Water Pollutants Using Cross-Linked Polymeric Ionic Liquid as Solid Phase Micro-Extraction Coatings

Ionic liquids found a wide application in catalysis and extraction due to their unique properties. Herein, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker and 1-vinyl-3- butylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate as functional monomer via thermally initiated free-radical polymerization was prepared as a novel copolymer solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) coating. A surface modified stainless-steel wire was implemented as the substrate. Factors affecting the extraction performances of the copolymer, including the molar ratio of monomers to cross-linkers, the amount of porogen agent, and polymerization time were evaluated and optimized. To evaluate the extraction performance, five commonly seen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were taken as the analytical targets. The potential factors affecting extraction efficiency were optimized. The as-prepared SPME device, coupled with gas chromatography, was successfully applied for the determination of PAHs in water samples. The wide linear range, low detection limit, good reproducibility, selectivity, and excellent thermal stability indicate the promising application of the newly developed SPME fiber in environmental monitoring as well as in other samples having complex matrices.

Selective extraction and detection of β-agonists in swine urine for monitoring illegal use in livestock breeding

The illegal use of β-agonists often endangers animal-derived food safety. In this study, a selective detection method for β-agonists in swine urine was established via the combination of polymeric ionic liquid-molecularly imprinted graphene oxide-miniaturized pipette tip solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography. It is worth noting that this method relied mainly on the designed adsorbent, which presented a rich adsorption mechanism, fast mass transfer rate, and high selectivity, and was successfully utilized in the selective extraction of β-agonists from swine urine samples. The proposed method has low LOD (0.20-0.56 ng/mL), high recovery (94.9-107.9%), and high reusability (4 times, 91.9-108.8%), which indicates its high potential as a selective, sensitive, accurate, and nonfatal method for monitoring the illegal use of β-agonists in the livestock breeding stage.

Applications of Graphene and Its Derivatives in Chemical Analysis

In this review, the applications of graphene and its derivatives in the chemical analysis have been described. The properties of graphene materials which are essential for their use in chemical and biochemical analysis are characterized. The materials are used in sensors and biosensors, in electrochemistry, in chromatography and in the sample preparation techniques. Chemical and electrochemical sensors containing graphene materials are useful devices for detecting some chemical and biochemical compounds. Chromatographic columns for HPLC with graphene containing stationary phases may be used for separation of polar and nonpolar components of some specific mixtures. Graphene materials could be successfully employed during sample preparation for analysis with SPE, magnetic SPE, and SPME techniques. HighlightsThe review of the applications of graphene (G) and its derivatives, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), in chemical and biochemical analysis is proposed.The electron donor-acceptor and proton donor-acceptor interactions for the graphene based materials - analytes systems and their impact on the analysis results are discussed, particularly:    i) in electrochemistry,ii) in chromatography,iii) in modern sample preparation techniquesiv) in sensors of different types.The essence of the thermal stability and the nomenclature of the graphene based materials in their different applications in chemical systems of different classes was discussed (and suggested).The benefits of using SPME fibers with immobilized graphene materials have been presented in detail.

Determination of trace hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine using graphene oxide incorporated monolith solid-phase extraction coupled with LC-MS/MS

The biomonitoring of hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine, as a direct way to access multiple exposures to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, has raised great concerns due to their increasing hazardous health effects on humans. Solid-phase extraction is an effective and useful technique to preconcentrate trace analytes from biological samples. Here, we report a novel solid-phase extraction method using a graphene oxide incorporated monolithic syringe for the determination of six hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The effect of graphene oxide amount, washing solvent, eluting solvent, and its volume on the extraction performance were investigated. The fabricated monoliths gave higher adsorption efficiency and capacity than the neat polymer monolith and commercial C₁₈ sorbent. Under the optimum conditions, the developed method provided the detection limits (S/N = 3) of 0.02-0.1 ng/mL and the linear ranges of 0.1-1500 ng/mL for six analytes in urine sample. The recoveries at three spiked levels ranged from 77.5 to 97.1%. Besides, the intra column-to-column (n = 3) and inter batch-to-batch (n = 3) precisions were ≤ 9.8%. The developed method was successfully applied for the determination of hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine samples of coke oven workers.

Covalent immobilization of covalent organic framework on stainless steel wire for solid-phase microextraction GC-MS/MS determination of sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in grilled meat samples

Covalent organic framework TpBD was grafted on stainless steel wire with polydopamine as a linker. The fabricated TpBD bonded stainless steel wire was used as the solid-phase microextraction fiber to extract sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for subsequent GC-MS/MS determination in grilled meat samples. The developed method gave the limits of detection (S/N = 3) from 0.02 (pyrene)-1.66 (naphthalene) ng L^-1 and enhancement factors from 1069 (naphthalene)-10879 (benz(a)anthracene). The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for intra-day and inter-day study are in the range of 2.6%-8.5% and 4.5%-9.4%, respectively. The fiber-to-fiber RSDs for three parallel prepared fibers were 5.3%-10.0%. One TpBD bonded fiber can stand at least 200 cycles without significant loss of extraction efficiency. The developed method was successfully applied for the determination of trace PAHs in grilled meat samples with recoveries from 85.1% to 102.8%.

Durable molybdenum oxide coated solid-phase microextraction fiber for highly selective and efficient extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water

A bonding method was developed for coating molybdenum oxides onto a steel wire substrate, which was used as a solid-phase microextraction fiber, was coupled with gas chromatography. Based on the characterization, it is found that the as-prepared molybdenum oxides material contained a nanobelt structure with a uniform size and good dispersibility. In addition, there were a large number of small protrusions on the surface of the nanobelts. These characteristics provided a large specific surface area for extraction. Molybdenum oxides exhibited a high extraction selectivity for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons owing to its moderate coordination. After the optimization of the factors, method detection limits of < 1.25 μg/L were achieved, and the calibration curves were linear within the range of 2-600 μg/L. In addition, repeatability was demonstrated, and the relative standard deviation < 6.4%. The molybdenum oxides coating had a high scratch resistance, which could effectively prevent coating wear and failure. Combined with the high thermal and chemical stability, the service life of the coating was improved and could be used 150 times without a significant reduction in the extraction performance. Finally, the as-prepared fiber had a comparable extraction capacity and higher partition coefficients that those of commercial polyacrylate fibers.

Double -shelled hollow ZnO/carbon nanocubes as an efficient solid-phase microextraction coating for the extraction of broad-spectrum pollutants

Efficient extraction of pollutants with different chemical properties from environmental samples has attracted great attention in the development of analytical chemistry. However, it is still a challenge to develop an appropriate and sensitive adsorbent for determining broad-spectrum analytes. Herein, zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8)-derived double-shelled hollow zinc oxide/carbon (ZnO/C) nanocubes were reported as a novel coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The nanocubes with a unique structure and composition were obtained by controlled etching of ZIF-8 with tannic acid (TA) followed by pyrolysis. When a ZnO/C nanocube-coated fiber (ZnO/C-F) was used to extract the complex environmental samples containing both nonpolar (benzene compounds (BTEX)) and polar (chlorophenols (CPs)) pollutants, excellent extraction performance was achieved; we obtained low detection limits (0.14-0.56 ng L-1 for BTEX and 1.10-2.84 ng L-1 for CPs), good repeatability (2.2-5.9% for six replicated extractions) and excellent reproducibility (0.61-7.8%, fiber to fiber). The broad-spectrum SPME performance was ascribed to the synergistic effect between the composition and structure of ZnO/C nanocubes. Compositionally, the uniform dispersion of ZnO and carbon framework could provide abundant adsorption active sites, where Zn-OHs bound CPs by hydrogen bonding and carbon absorbed BTEX through π-π stacking interaction and hydrophobic interaction. Structurally, the double-shelled hollow morphology of the nanocubes was favorable for the sensitive extraction. Finally, the established ZnO/C-F-based headspace-SPME method was used for the preconcentration and determination of abundant analytes from real water samples. These findings open the door for the practical use of double-shelled hollow multicompositional inorganic materials.

Galvanic displacement-induced codeposition of reduced-graphene-oxide/silver on alloy fibers for non-destructive SPME@SERS analysis of antibiotics

This work describes the integration of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) by codeposition of a hybrid consisting of reduced graphene oxide and silver on silver-copper alloy fibers. The morphology and structure of the coating were characterized by a variety of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques that confirmed the hybrid structure of the material. A galvanic-displacement-induced process is assumed to be involved during the codeposition of the hybrid coating on the alloy. In this process, Ag(I) is reduced to Ag(0) by Cu(0), and the presence of conjugated domains in GO facilitates the long-range transfer of electrons from Cu to Ag+. Simultaneously, GO accepts electrons and is converted into RGO. The hybrid coating exhibits a high SERS enhancement factor and good spatial uniformity. The needle-like coated alloy fibers are shown to be a viable tool for non-destructive sampling and SERS-based determination of trace levels of the antibiotics sulfadiazine and sulfamethoxazole in a spiked tissue mimic. The SERS peaks at 1149 cm^-1 for sulfadiazine and 1144 cm^-1 for sulfamethoxazole are selected as the reference peaks in the quantitative analysis. The linear range is from 0.01 to 100 μg·cm^-3. The detection limits are 1.9 ng·cm^-3 for sulfadiazine and 4.4 ng·cm^-3 for sulfamethoxazole.
