Abstract
Cataluminescence-based sensors do not require external light sources and complex circuitry, which enables them to avoid light scattering with high sensitivity, selectivity, and widely linear range. In this study, a wireless sensor system based on hierarchical CuO microspheres assembled from nano-sheets was constructed for Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) online detection. Through sensor characteristics and data process analysis, the results showed that the luminous sensor system has good luminous characteristics, including the intensity of visible light, high signal/noise (S/N) values, and very short response and recovery times. Different VOC concentration values can be detected on multiple wavelength channels and different Cataluminescence signal spectra separations can process multiple sets of Cataluminescence data combinations concurrently. This study also briefly studied the mechanism action of the Cataluminescence sensor, which can specifically be used for VOC detecting.

Abstract
A cataluminescence (CTL) ether gas sensor based on GO/Mo2TiC2Tx composite was developed. The sensor has high selectivity and sensitivity to ether with the response and recovery times of 2 and 8 s, respectively. The optimal operating temperature (155 °C) is low compare with common sensors. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of the concentrations of ether is 9.5–950 ppm; CTL signal intensity and ether concentration show a good linear relationship (r = 0.9952); and the detection limit is 0.64 ppm. Furthermore, no response to anything other than acetone after repeatedly tested 10 kinds of common volatile organic compounds, which shows that the sensor has a good selectivity. In addition, the developed sensor has a long life. A cataluminescence (CTL) ether gas sensor based on a GO/Mo2TiC2Tx composite was developed. The sensor has high selectivity and sensitivity.![]()

Abstract
The freshness of meat has always been the focus of attention from consumers and suppliers for health and economic reasons. Usually, amine vapors, as one of the main components of the gas produced in the process of meat spoilage, can be used to monitor meat spoilage. Here, a new ratiometric cataluminescence (CTL) sensor based on energy transfer was developed to identify amine vapors and monitor meat freshness. After Tb doping, amine vapors exhibit a dual-wavelength (490 and 555 nm) property of CTL signals when reacted on the surface of Tb-doped La2O2CO3, and the ratio of I555 to I490 (R555/490) is a unique value for a given analyte within a wide range of concentrations. To illustrate the new sensor, 15 amine vapors were successfully identified using R555/490, including homologues and isomers. Besides, this sensor was used to monitor four meats, and the freshness of meats can be distinguished by cluster analysis successfully. Moreover, further discussion of energy-transfer phenomena and influence factors has facilitating effects on exploring the mechanism of energy transfer at the gas-solid interface.

Abstract
Identification of complex samples presents a difficult challenge for modern analytical techniques, and the differentiation among closely similar mixtures often remains indeterminate. In this article, we designed a simplified cyclic chemiluminescence (CCL) system that is able to measure multistage signals in a single sample injection. The system was used to investigate the CCL reactions of the binary, ternary, and multicomponent mixtures. Results showed that each mixture has a unique exponential decay equation (EDE) with a constant decay coefficient (k-value) to describe the change law of its multistage signals. Further studies found that different brands of liquor, beer, toner, and baby powder have different k-values, and the same brand of the commodities between different batches have the same k-values, which allows facile identification of these complex samples. We then used different catalysts to design digital codes of the k-value for further improving the identifying ability of CCL. Moreover, the multistage signals are like fingerprints and could be used for linear discriminate analysis, which provides another complementary approach for identification of complex samples. Finally, we demonstrated that CCL shows potential applications in certification and quality assurance according to the change of the k-values of the sample. This work demonstrates that excellent discrimination ability of CCL for the identification of complex samples and provides a promising technology for quality assurance.

Abstract
Although chemiresistive gas sensors, based on metal-oxide semiconductors, have exhibited particular promise for the monitoring of air pollution, they are often limited because of poor selectivity. In that case, to overcome this issue, according to the essence of the gas-sensing process, the method of reforming the surface reaction path on the surface of the sensing materials was used. Here, we report that Pd nanoparticles supported over the In2O3 composites, featured with a yolk-shell structure, enable the trace detection of carbon disulfide (CS2) gas molecules, which are immensely dangerous to humans and animals. Moreover, the prominent enhancement of the gas response and the ultraselective CS2-sensing characteristic were acquired in comparison with pristine In2O3 sensors. Significantly, density functional theory calculations revealed that the Pd supported on In2O3 greatly facilitates the adsorption capacity to CS2, and the intermediate S, produced by Pd-catalyzed desulfurization reaction, on the Pd/In2O3 surface during the sensing process is a key to achieving a high CS2 gas response as well as ultraselectivity, which is well in agreement with the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results. On the basis of these results, a new sensing mechanism model for the CS2-sensing process was put forward.

Abstract
Cataluminescence (CTL) is one of the most important sensing-transduction principles for the real-time monitoring of atmospheric pollutants. Highly sensitive CTL-based CO detection still remains a challenge because of the relatively poor reactivity of CO and the low catalytic efficiency of the catalysts. Herein, combining ultraviolet (UV)-light activation and chemical modification of the sensing element, we have successfully established a UV-assisted CTL sensor for gaseous CO based on g-C3N4 with high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. UV irradiation can efficiently activate CO molecules and induce the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for CO oxidation. Furthermore, carboxyl groups greatly facilitate the chemisorption of CO on functionalized g-C3N4 nanomaterials, thus enhancing the CTL sensitivity. The influences of experimental conditions and the possible catalytic mechanism of CO on functionalized g-C3N4 have been investigated in detail. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the proposed CTL sensor presents a detection limit (3σ) toward CO of 0.008 μg mL-1, which is much lower than the maximum allowable emission concentration of CO in atmospheric conditions (0.030 μg mL-1). The UV-CTL system is green, sensitive, stable, and low cost, and thus it possesses great potential application in gas sensing.

Abstract
To study the interesting chemical reaction phenomenon can greatly contribute to the development of an innovative analytical method. In this paper, a simple CL reaction cell was constructed to study the chemiluminescence (CL) emission from the thermal oxidation of carbon disulfide (CS2). We found that the CL detection of CS2 exhibits unique characteristics of excellent selectivity and rapid response capacity. Experimental investigations together with theoretical calculation were performed to study the mechanism behind the CL reaction. The results revealed that the main luminous intermediates generated during the thermal degradation of CS2 are SO2* and CO2*. Significantly, this CL emission phenomenon has a wide application due to many sulfur-containing compounds that can convert to CS2 under special conditions. On the basis of this scheme, a CS2-generating and detection system was developed for rapid measurement of CS2 or other compounds that can convert to CS2. The usefulness of the system was demonstrated by measuring dithiocarbamate (DTC) pesticides (selected mancozeb as a representative analyte) based on the evolution of CS2 in spiked agricultural products. Results showed that the system allows online and large volume detection of CS2 under nonequilibrium condition, which greatly reduces the analytical time. The concentrations of mancozeb in the spiked samples were well-quantified with satisfied recoveries of 76.9-97.3%. The system not only addresses the urgent need for rapid in-field screening of DTC residues in foodstuffs but also opens a new opportunity for the fast, convenient, and cost-effective detection of CS2 and some other sulfur-containing compounds in complex samples.

Abstract
A novel and sensitive gas sensor was developed for the determination of benzene based on its cataluminescence (CTL) by oxidation in air on the surface of hollow magnesium silicate spheres. Luminescence characteristics and optimum conditions were investigated. Results indicated that the as-prepared magnesium silicate hollow spheres exhibited outstanding CTL properties such as stable intensity, high signal/noise values, and short response and recovery times. Under optimized conditions, benzene exhibited a broad linear range of 1-4500 ppm, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9946 and a limit of detection (signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) = 3) of 0.6 ppm, which was below the standard permitted concentration. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for 100 ppm benzene was 4.3% (n = 6). Furthermore, the gas sensor system showed outstanding selectivity for benzene compared with nine other common volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The proposed gas sensor showed good characteristics of high selectivity, fast response time and long lifetime, which suggested the promising application of magnesium silicate hollow spheres as a novel highly efficient CTL sensing material. The mechanism for the improved performance was also discussed based on the experimental results.
