Abstract
Toluene and xylene are volatile organic compounds, and long-term exposure to toluene and xylene may cause brain structure and nervous system damage. To evaluate exposure to toluene and xylene in the environment, it is usually possible to monitor their metabolites in organisms, hippuric acid (HA) and methylhippuric acid (MHA). In this work, we designed a new magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) sorbent, zirconium postsynthetic-modified magnetic covalent organic polymer (Fe3O4@COP-COOZr), for purifying and enriching HA and 4-MHA. Zirconium ions were immobilized on the magnetic COP surface by postsynthetic modification without the use of additional coating layers or chelating ligands. The developed Fe3O4@COP-COOZr interacted with HA and 4-MHA through the π-π stacking effect and electrostatic interactions, as well as strong chelation with coordinatively unsaturated zirconium sites. The promising affinity material of Fe3O4@COP-COOZr in MSPE had high stability and recyclability. The established MSPE-HPLC-UV method showed low sorbent consumption (10 mg) and high sensitivity (LODs less than 0.1 μg L-1), and can be used for the analysis of HA and 4-MHA in real samples. The recoveries of the proposed method in real urine samples for the simultaneous determination of HA and 4-MHA were in the range of 83.5-103.2 %, and the RSDs were 0.9-7.1 %.

Abstract
As the common and significant chemical modifications, post-translational modifications (PTMs) play a key role in the functional proteome. Affected by the signal interference, low concentration, and insufficient ionization efficiency of impurities, the direct detection of PTMs by mass spectrometry (MS) still faces many challenges. Therefore, sample preparation and enrichment are an indispensable link before MS analysis of PTMs in proteomics. The rapid development of functionalized materials with diverse morphologies and compositions provides an avenue for sample preparation and enrichment for PTMs analysis. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the application of novel functionalized materials in sample preparation for phosphoproteomes and glycoproteomes analysis. In addition, this review specifically discusses the design and preparation of functionalized materials based on different enrichment mechanisms, and proposes research directions and potential challenges for proteomic PTMs research.

Abstract
Natural chitosan was applied as supporting material for Ti(IV) based immobilized metal ion affinity chromatographic (IMAC) material (Ti-CTS). Compared with other polymer based IMAC, Ti-CTS can save the cockamamie synthesis procedures and be easy to obtain. The morphology, surface area, pore volume and elemental composition of Ti-CTS were revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Tryptic digest products from several standard proteins and two real samples (non-fat milk and serum) were enriched using Ti-CTS to demonstrate the efficiency of this method. The results showed that this composite enables high sensitive and selective phosphopeptide enrichment from casein variants, non-fat milk and human serum. Furthermore, multi-phosphorylated peptides with three serine phospholated sites (S*S*S*) demonstrated high affinity to Ti-CTS. Hence, this method had great potential for future studies of complex phosphoproteomes and especially multi-phosphorylated peptides.

Abstract
The polymeric materials have contributed significantly in the area of bioanalytical science. The functionalization of polymeric backbone after its development brings unique selectivity towards the target biomolecules. In present work, the functionalities of choice have been introduced through the ring-opening of allyl glycidyl ether. The utility of polymer is widened through derivatizations to immobilized metal ion affinity chromatographic (IMAC) material for the phosphopeptides enrichment and Reversed Phase (C-18) for the desalting prior to MALDI-MS analysis. The polymer-IMAC in addition to Fe(3+) is also immobilized with lanthanide ions like La(3+), Eu(3+), and Er(3+). The amount of Fe(3+) immobilized is determined as 0.7928 mg/g. Spherical morphology with narrow particle size dispersion is revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface area, pore volume and size distribution is determined by nitrogen adsorption porosimetery. The elemental composition and purity level is confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) data. The derivatization to IMAC and RP is evaluated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The polymer enables the efficient phosphopeptide enrichment to equal degree from casein variants, non-fat milk, egg yolk, human serum, and HeLa cell extract. The identification of phosphorylation sites can lead to the phosphorylation pathways to understand the post-translational modifications. The identification with their sequence coverage is made using Mascot and Phosphosite Plus. It is sensitive to enrich the phosphopeptides down to 2 femtomoles with very high selectivity of 1:2000 with BSA background. These attributes are linked to the higher surface area (173.1554 m(2)/g) of the designed polymer. The non-specific bindings, particularly the Fe(3+) linked acidic residues are also avoided. Four characteristic phosphopeptides (fibrinopeptide A and their hydrolytic products) from fibrinogen α-chain are identified from the human serum after the enrichment, which have link to the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The proportions of fibrinogen and their phosphorylation products enriched by poly(AGE/DVB)-IMAC open new horizons in the biomarker discovery.
