Abstract
An on-line sample preconcentration technique based on transient trapping (tr-trapping) in micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) was applied for steroid detection with UV (tr-trapping-UV) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry detection (tr-trapping-ESI-MS). ESI-MS was used to improve the sensitivity in MEKC. The MEKC separation was carried out using volatile ammonium formate as a background solution to facilitate the coupling with ESI-MS. The partial introduction of a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micellar solution before the introduction of a sample solution to the capillary provided the effective preconcentration of analytes. At the same time, the SDS micelle would not enter the ESI-MS system, so its interference in ESI-MS detection was suppressed under the optimal condition, then five steroids can be separated by the developed method. In tr-trapping-ESI-MS, an acidic condition of pH 3.5 was employed to suppress the electroosmotic flow, which can avoid micellar solution migrating to the MS instrument. The developed method showed that the micellar solution requires a twofold slower time than the sample to migrate along the column, which can prohibit the cause of the problem with the MS instrument and interference signal of SDS in the steroid's detection. The tr-trapping-ESI-MS protocol showed up to 540-fold enhancements of the peak intensity and 50-fold improvement of the limit of detection compared with capillary zone electrophoresis using androsterone as a model sample.

Sensitive Analysis of Metoprolol Tartrate and Diltiazem Hydrochloride in Human Serum by Capillary Zone Electrophoresis Combining on Column Field-Amplified Sample Injection. Abstract
A sensitive capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) combined with field-amplified sample injection (FASI) method was investigated to simultaneously determine diltiazem (DI) hydrochloride and metoprolol (ME) tartrate in human serum. This method was validated by linearity, limits of detection (LOD), stability, precision and accuracy, and the related parameters are linearity (r2 > 0.9980), intra- and inter-day precisions (intra-day relative standard deviation (RSD) is 2.3-3.4%, and inter-day RSD is 3.8-7.5%) and the LOD (0.02 ng/mL for ME tartrate and 0.01 ng/mL for DI hydrochloride). So the proposed method is rapid, sensitive and accurate for determination of these two anti-anginal drugs in human serum. As for enrichment conditions, it was helpful to add phosphoric acid and isopropanol into samples for enrichment efficiency. A model was established to illustrate the possible enrichment mechanism of analytes, and a theory of half-width was also applied in CZE combined with FASI method to evaluate the peak performance.

Abstract
For the identification and quantification of analytes in complex samples, highly selective analytical strategies are required. The selectivity of single separation techniques such as gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), or capillary electrophoresis (CE) with common detection principles can be enhanced by hyphenating orthogonal separation techniques but also by using complementary detection systems. In this review, two-dimensional systems containing CE in at least one dimension are reviewed, namely LC-CE or 2D CE systems. Particular attention is paid to the aspect of selectivity enhancement due to the orthogonality of the different separation mechanisms. As an alternative concept, dual detection approaches are reviewed using the common detectors of CE such as UV/VIS, laser-induced fluorescence, capacitively coupled contactless conductivity (C4D), electrochemical detection, and mass spectrometry. Special emphasis is given to dual detection systems implementing the highly flexible C4D as one detection component. Selectivity enhancement can be achieved in case of complementarity of the different detection techniques.

Abstract
An advanced two-dimensional capillary electrophoresis method, based on on-line combination of capillary isotachophoresis and capillary zone electrophoresis with cyclodextrin additive in background electrolyte, was developed for effective determination of serotonin in human urine. Hydrodynamically closed separation system and large bore capillaries (300–800 µm) were chosen for the possibility to enhance the sample load capacity, and, by that, to decrease limit of detection. Isotachophoresis served for the sample preseparation, defined elimination of sample matrix constituents (sample clean up), and preconcentration of the analyte. Cyclodextrin separation environment enhanced separation selectivity of capillary zone electrophoresis. In this way, serotonin could be successfully separated from the rest of the sample matrix constituents migrating in capillary zone electrophoresis step so that human urine could be directly (i.e., without any external sample preparation) injected into the analyzer. The proposed method was successfully validated, showing favorable parameters of sensitivity (limit of detection for serotonin was 2.32 ng·mL−1), linearity (regression coefficient higher than 0.99), precision (repeatability of the migration time and peak area were in the range of 0.02–1.17% and 5.25–7.88%, respectively), and recovery (ranging in the interval of 90.0–93.6%). The developed method was applied for the assay of the human urine samples obtained from healthy volunteers. The determined concentrations of serotonin in such samples were in the range of 12.4–491.2 ng·mL−1 that was in good agreement with literature data. This advanced method represents a highly effective, reliable, and low-cost alternative for the routine determination of serotonin as a biomarker in human urine.

Abstract
Nowadays, owing to the increasing population and the attempts to satisfy its needs, pesticides are widely applied to control the quantity and quality of agricultural products. However, the presence of pesticide residues and their metabolites in environmental samples is hazardous to the health of humans and all other living organisms. Thus, monitoring these compounds is extremely important to ensure that only permitted levels of pesticide are consumed. To this end, fast, reliable, and environmentally friendly methods that can accurately analyze dilute, complex samples containing both parent substances and their metabolites are required. Focusing primarily on research published since 2010, this review summarizes the use of various sample pretreatment techniques to extract pesticides from various matrices, combined with on-line preconcentration strategies for sensitivity improvement, and subsequent capillary electrophoresis analysis.

Abstract
Currently, many types of affinity materials have been developed for the enrichment of glycoproteins potentially considered to be clinical biomarkers; however, they can not effectively distinguish between different glycoproteins and thus lack the functionality that may be the key to the diagnosis of specific diseases. In the present work, a novel interface-free 2D monolithic material has been developed for the separation of multiple types of glycoproteins, in which boronate-functionalized graphene acts as preconcentration segment and poly(guanidinium ionic liquid) acts as separation segment. The resultant 2D material was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and electroosmotic flow analysis to demonstrate successful modification at each step. The performance of this 2D material was evaluated by capillary electrochromatography and allowed the successful online concentration and separation of five standard glycoproteins. The high separation efficiency can be largely attributed to the good orthogonality of boronate-functionalized graphene monolith and poly(guanidinium ionic liquid) monolith.
