Range-adaptive standoff recognition of explosive fingerprints on solid surfaces using a supervised learning method and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Laser beam steering automation with an Arduino-based CNC shield for standoff femtosecond filament-induced breakdown spectroscopic studies

In this study, we report a novel, to the best of our knowledge, instrumentation procedure in the automation of laser beam steering for raster/spiral scanning of the samples used in standoff femtosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) experiments. We have used a readily available and easy-to-handle Arduino-based computerized numerical control (CNC) shield along with the free software, universal G-code sender, for the automation. Standoff femtosecond filamentation-induced breakdown spectra (St-Fs-FIBS) of metals, three compositions of Ag-Au alloy, and polyvinyl chloride, unplasticized polyvinyl chloride, and chlorinated polyvinyl chloride plastic samples were recorded using the developed automated experimental setup. The St-Fs-FIBS spectra were recorded at a standoff distance of ∼5m utilizing a simple hand-held spectrometer. Furthermore, principal component analysis technique was utilized for the successful classification of three compositions of Au-Ag alloy spectra using their St-Fs-FIBS spectral data.

Spatio-temporal characterization of ablative Cu plasma produced by femtosecond filaments

We present the spatial and temporal characterization of the copper (Cu) plasma produced by the femtosecond laser filaments. The filaments of various lengths and intensities were generated with the aid of three different focusing lenses. Further, the filamentation induced breakdown spectroscopy (FIBS) measurements were carried out for each filament at three different positions along the length of the filament. The filaments were spatially characterized by estimating the plasma temperature and electron density. Our investigation has demonstrated that the centre of the filament is the best to obtain a maximum signal. Both the spectral line intensity and their persistence time are highest for the center of the filament. The enhanced persistence and the scalability of the spectral line intensity tested across different focusing geometries can boost the application of this technique in various fields.

Detection of minor compounds in complex mineral samples from millions of spectra: A new data analysis strategy in LIBS imaging

Today, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) imaging is in full change. Indeed, always more stable instrumentations are developed, which significantly increases the signal quality and naturally the analytical potential of the technique for the characterization of complex and heterogeneous samples at the micro-scale level. Obviously, other intrinsic features such as a limit of detection in the order of ppm, a high field of view and high acquisition rate make it one of the most complete chemical imaging techniques to date. It is thus possible in these conditions to acquire several million spectra from one single sample in just hours. Managing big data in LIBS imaging is the challenge ahead. In this paper, we put forward a new spectral analysis strategy, called embedded k-means clustering, for simultaneous detection of major and minor compounds and the generation of associated localization maps. A complex rock section with different phases and traces will be explored to demonstrate the value of this approach.

Femtosecond laser induced breakdown spectroscopy based standoff detection of explosives and discrimination using principal component analysis

We report the standoff (up to ~2 m) and remote (~8.5 m) detection of novel high energy materials/explosive molecules (Nitroimidazoles and Nitropyrazoles) using the technique of femtosecond laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). We utilized two different collection systems (a) ME-OCT-0007 (commercially available) and (b) Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope for these experiments. In conjunction with LIBS data, principal component analysis was employed to discriminate/classify the explosives and the obtained results in both configurations are compared. Different aspects influencing the LIBS signal strength at far distances such as fluence at target, efficiency of collection system etc. are discussed.

Standoff monitoring of aqueous aerosols using nanosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy: droplet size and matrix effects

Nanosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy has been examined for the analysis of suspended matter in a free stream of air. The real-time monitoring of this scenario poses major challenges for an accurate categorization due to its changing characteristics such as composition, size, and density of particles. The effects of particle size and matrix in the optical emission responses registered from such scenarios have been evaluated. Distant (10 m) plasmas of saline solutions, containing either NaCl or Na₂SO₄ at different concentrations, have been induced by nanosecond laser pulses at a wavelength of 1064 nm. The effects of the droplet size and its concentration on differences in the laser-induced breakdown probability, the intensity of the characteristic lines, and the plasma emission continuum have been discussed. The quantification of sodium in distant water droplets has been proved. However, an initial knowledge on the average droplet size is required. The average droplet size could be determined from the slope of H I and O I lines versus the continuum plasma emission, which is only weakly influenced by the salt content in the droplets.

Molecular signatures in femtosecond laser-induced organic plasmas: comparison with nanosecond laser ablation

During the last few years, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has evolved significantly in the molecular sensing area through the optical monitoring of emissions from organic plasmas. Large efforts have been made to study the formation pathways of diatomic radicals as well as their connections with the bonding framework of molecular solids. Together with the structural and chemical-physical properties of molecules, laser ablation parameters seem to be closely tied to the observed spectral signatures. This research focuses on evaluating the impact of laser pulse duration on the production of diatomic species that populate plasmas of organic materials. Differences in relative intensities of spectral signatures from the plasmas of several organic molecules induced in femtosecond (fs) and nanosecond (ns) ablation regimes have been studied. Beyond the abundance and origin of diatomic radicals that seed the plasma, findings reveal the crucial role of the ablation regime in the breakage pattern of the molecule. The laser pulse duration dictates the fragments and atoms resulting from the vaporized molecules, promoting some formation routes at the expense of other paths. The larger amount of fragments formed by fs pulses advocates a direct release of native bonds and a subsequent seeding of the plasma with diatomic species. In contrast, in the ns ablation regime, the atomic recombinations and single displacement processes dominate the contribution to diatomic radicals, as long as atomization of molecules prevails over their progressive decomposition. Consequently, fs-LIBS better reflects correlations between strengths of emissions from diatomic species and molecular structure as compared to ns-LIBS. These new results entail a further step towards the specificity in the analysis of molecular solids by fs-LIBS.
