Abstract
In comparison to the sensing activity, the reactivity of arsenite (AsO2-) is less explored. Herein, we focused on AsO2- reactivity studies based on its pKa and compared the study with other common anions. All three pKa values of arsenite are >9.0, affording a flexible working pH range to design a probe for reactivity studies. We designed and synthesized six pH dependent benzothiazole-based Schiff bases, namely, 1-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol (1), 5-(diethylamino)-2-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)phenol (2), 9-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-pyrido[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-8-ol (3), 5-methoxy-2-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)phenol (4), 4-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)benzene-1,3-diol (5), and 2-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)phenol (6), as probes for hydrolysis studies containing 5% water in acetonitrile. In spite of the presence of water in the solution, no hydrolysis was observed for all the probes in the absence of a salt. In the presence of selected sodium salts of various anions in solution, intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) was observed after the deprotonation of an aromatic hydroxy group at the ortho position with respect to the imine groups within the probes. Among the studied anions, selective AsO2- induced imine hydrolysis was observed for probes 1 and 4. In the case of 5 with both o- and p-hydroxy groups, no hydrolysis was observed in the presence of AsO2-. Probe 6 with only the o-hydroxy group showed very fast hydrolysis with poor selectivity. The p-hydroxy group in 4-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)phenol (7) resulted in poor AsO2- induced hydrolysis. The aldehyde, which was generated after hydrolysis of probe 1, showed selective emission at 450 nm in the presence of AsO2-. The time dependent hydrolysis reaction of probe 1 controls the emission intensity enhancement.

Abstract
Chemosensor N7R1 with two acidic binding sites was synthesized, and the ability of the sensor to differentiate arsenite and arsenate in the organo-aqueous medium was evaluated using colorimetric sensing methods. N7R1 distinguished arsenite with a peacock blue color and arsenate with a pale green color in a DMSO/H2O (9 : 1, v/v) solvent mixture. The specific selectivity for arsenite was achieved in DMSO/H2O (7 : 3, v/v). The sensor demonstrated stability over a pH range of 5 to 12. The computed high binding constant of 9.3176 × 1011 M-2 and a lower detection limit of 11.48 ppb for arsenite exposed the chemosensor's higher potential for arsenite detection. The binding mechanism with a 1 : 2 binding process is confirmed using UV-Vis and 1H NMR titrations, electrochemical studies, mass spectral analysis and DFT calculations. Practical applications were demonstrated by utilizing test strips and molecular logic gates. Chemosensor N7R1 successfully detected arsenite in real water samples, as well as honey and milk samples.

Abstract
The high toxicity of arsenic (As) can cause irreversible harm to the environment and human health. In this study, the chlorin e6 (Ce6), which emits fluorescence in the infrared region, was introduced as the luminescence center, and the addition of copper ion (Cu2+) and As(V) provoked a regular change in fluorescence at 652 nm, whereas that of As(III) was 665 nm, which was used to optionally detect Cu2+, arsenic (As(III), and As(V)). The limit of detection (LOD) values were 0.212 μM, 0.089 ppm, and 1.375 ppb for Cu2+, As(III), and As(V), respectively. The developed method can be used to determine Cu2+ and arsenic in water and soil with good sensitivity and selectivity. The 1:1 stoichiometry of Ce6 with Cu2+ was obtained from the Job plot that was developed from UV-visible spectra. The binding constants for Cu2+ and As(V) were established to be 1.248 × 105 M-1 and 2.35 × 1012 M-2, respectively, using B-H (Benesi-Hildebrand) plots. Fluorescence lifetimes, B-H plots, FT-IR, and 1H-NMR were used to postulate the mechanism of Cu2+ fluorescence quenching and As(V) fluorescence restoration and the interactions of the two ions with the Ce6 molecule.

Abstract
The detection and discrimination of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions have been investigated using a simple probe (L), produced by the condensation of ethylenediamine and 3-ethoxysalicyaldehyde. Single crystal X-ray structures demonstrate that L interacts with Fe2+ and Fe3+. In aqueous-DMSO media, the L recognises AsO2- by fluorescence and colorimetry techniques. The AsO2- aided PET inhibition and H-bond assisted chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) boost fluorescence by 91-fold. The L can detect 0.354 ppb Fe2+, 0.22 ppb Fe3+ and 0.235 ppt AsO2-.

Abstract
Novel organic receptors N3R1- N3R3 were developed for the selective colorimetric recognition of arsenite ions in the organo-aqueous media. In the 50% aq. acetonitrile media and 70% aq. DMSO media, receptors N3R2 and N3R3 showed specific sensitivity and selectivity towards arsenite anions over arsenate anions. Receptor N3R1 showed discriminating recognition of arsenite in the 40% aq. DMSO medium. All three receptors formed a 1:1 complex with arsenite and stable for a pH range of 6-12. The receptors N3R2 and N3R3 achieved a detection limit of 0.008 ppm (8 ppb) and 0.0246 ppm, respectively, for arsenite. Initial hydrogen bonding on binding with the arsenite followed by the deprotonation mechanism was well supported by the UV-Vis titration, 1H- NMR titration, electrochemical studies, and the DFT studies. Colorimetric test strips were fabricated using N3R1- N3R3 for the on-site detection of arsenite anion. The receptors are also employed for sensing arsenite ions in various environmental water samples with high accuracy.

Abstract
In this work, we manifested a new approach in designing solid-state colorimetric sensors for the selective optical sensing of As3+. The sensor fabrication is modulated using, (i) a cubic mesopores of ordered silica monolith, and (ii) a bimodal macro-/meso-porous polymer monolith, as hosting templates that are immobilized with a tailor-made chromoionophoric probe (DFBEP). The surface morphology and structural dimensions of the monolith templates and the sensor materials are characterized using p-XRD, XPS, FE-SEM-EDAX, HR-TEM-SAED, FT-IR, TGA, and BET/BJH analysis. The sensing components such as pH, probe content, sensor dosage, kinetics, temperature, analyte concentration, linear response range, selectivity, and sensitivity are optimized to arrive at the best sensing conditions. The silica and polymer-based monolithic sensors show a linear spectral response in the concentration range of 2-300 and 2-200 ppb, with a detection limit of 0.87 and 0.75 ppb for As3+, respectively. The real-time ion-monitoring propensity of the sensors is tested with spiked synthetic and real water samples, with a recovery efficiency of ≥99.1% (RSD ≤1.57%). The sensors act as both naked-eye optical sensors and preconcentrators, with a response time of ≤2.5 min. The molecular and photophysical properties of the DFBEP-As3+ complex are studied by TD-DFT calculations, using the B3LYP/6-31G (d,p) method.

Abstract
Due to biological and environmental significance of highly toxic arsenic species, the design, synthesis and development of chemosensors for arsenic species has been a very active research field in recent times. In this review, we summarize recent works on the sensing mechanisms employed by fluorometric/colorimetric chemosensors and their applications in arsenic detection. Various types of sensing strategies can be categorized into six types including (i) chemosensors based on hydrogen bonding interactions; (ii) aggregation induced emission (AIE) based chemosensors; (iii) chemodosimetric approach (reaction-based chemosensors); (iv) metal coordination-based sensing strategy; (v) chemosensors based on metal complex displacement approach and (vi) metal complex as chemosensor. All these sensing strategies are very much simple and sensitive for use in the design of arsenic selective chromogenic and fluorogenic probes.

Abstract
A newly designed and synthesized half-condensed organic moiety 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-[(2-phenylamino-phenylimino)-methyl]-benzaldehyde (HL') and a Zn2L4 complex sequentially detect Zn2+ and H2PO4- ions as low as 1.13 nM and1.23 μM, respectively. HL' and a dinuclear Zn(ii) complex of in situ generated L- in a solution formulated as Zn2L4 under investigation were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic studies along with detailed structural analyses by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The selectivity and sensitivity of HL' towards Zn2+ ions and of the Zn2L4 complex towards H2PO4- ions are based on CHEF and via displacement pathways, respectively. Dual sensing of Zn2+ ions and H2PO4-ions in an aqueous medium via "Green-Blue-Green" emission with the reversible transformation of in situ formed HL' to HL was established by detailed electronic absorption and emission spectroscopic studies. This non-cytotoxic probe (HL', i.e. produced HL in solution) and Zn2L4 complexes are able to monitor the subcellular distribution changes of Zn2+ and H2PO4- ions, respectively, by fluorescence microscopy using the human semen sample.

Abstract
An amide-based smart probe (L) is explored for nanomolar detection of Mo(VI) ion in a ratiometric manner, involving hydrogen-bond-assisted chelation-enhanced fluorescence process through inhibition of photoinduced electron transfer process. The recognition of Mo(VI) is associated with a 17-fold fluorescence enhancement and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of the resulting Mo(VI) complex (M1). Further, M1 selectively recognizes arsenite through green emission of their adduct (C1) with an 81-fold fluorescence enhancement. Interestingly, dihydrogen phosphate causes dissociation of C1 back to free L having weak fluorescence. The methods are fast, highly selective, and allow their bare eye visualization at physiological pH. All of the interactions have been substantiated by time-dependent density functional theory calculations to rationalize their spectroscopic properties. The corresponding lowest detection limits are 1.5 × 10-8 M for Mo(VI), 1.2 × 10-10 M for AsO2 -, and 3.2 × 10-6 M for H2PO4 -, whereas the respective association constants are 4.21 × 105 M-1 for Mo(VI), 6.49 × 104 M-1 for AsO2 -, and 2.11 × 105 M-1 for H2PO4 -. The L is useful for efficient enrichment of Mo(VI) from aqueous solution, while M1 efficiently removes AsO2 - from environmental samples by solid-phase extraction.

Abstract
This study brings out a novel, superselective detection employing thiosalicylic acid-capped ZnS-based quantum dots that display photoluminescence "turn-on" characteristics only in the presence of arsenic in the aquatic medium for the first time. It shows a splendid limit of detection of soluble arsenic down to a few ppb level, much below than the MCL reported value, without being interfered by any other ions.

Abstract
Two novel salen based chemosensors have been successfully synthesized. UV-vis absorption, fluorescence emission spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were exploited to investigate their recognition toward various metal ions, including Na+, K+, Mg2+, Al3+, Zn2+, Ag+, Pb2+, Co2+, Li+, Ba2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, La3+, Cu2+ and Mn2+ ions. The results indicated that the sensor L1 and L2 exhibited highly selective and sensitive recognition for Zn2+ ions. The binding stoichiometry ratio of L1-Zn2+/L2-Zn2+ were recognized as 4:1 by the method of Job's plot. Meanwhile, this investigation is confirmed by 1H NMR. These results indicated that L1 and L2 can be applied as chemosensor for the detection of Zn2+ ion.

Abstract
A newly designed cyanide-selective chemosensor based on chromone containing benzothiazole groups [3-(2,3-dihydro-benzothiazol-2-yl)-chromen-4-one (DBTC)] was synthesized and structurally characterized by physico-chemical, spectroscopic, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The compound DBTC can detect cyanide anions based on nucleophilic addition as low as 5.76 nM in dimethyl sulfoxide-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine-N'-ethanesulfonic acid buffer (20 mM, pH 7.4) (v/v = 1:3). The binding mode between receptor DBTC and cyanide nucleophile has also been demonstrated by experimental studies using various spectroscopic tools and theoretical studies, and the experimental work has also been verified by characterizing one supporting compound of similar probable structure of the final product formed between DBTC and cyanide ion (DBTC-CN compound) by single-crystal X-ray analysis for detailed structural analyses. In theoretical study, density functional theory procedures have been used to calculate the molecular structure and the calculation of the Fukui function for evaluation of the electrophilic properties of each individual acceptor atom. Furthermore, the efficacy of the probe (DBTC) to detect the distribution of CN- ions in living cells has been checked by acquiring the fluorescence image using a confocal microscope. Notably, the paper strips with DBTC were prepared, and these could serve as efficient and suitable CN- test kits successfully.

Abstract
Reported herein the synthesis, characterization and biologically important zinc ion binding propensity of a weakly fluorescent chemosensor, 4-methyl-2,6-bis((E)-(2-(4-phenylthiazol-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl)phenol (1). 1H NMR spectroscopic titration experiment reveals the binding knack of 1 to the essential Zn2+. The photo-physical studies of 1 exhibit an enhancement in the fluorescence by several folds upon binding with the zinc ions attributed to PET-off process, with a binding constant value of 5.22×103M-1. 1 exhibits an excellent detection range for Zn2+ with lower detection limit value of 2.31×10-8M. The selectivity of 1 was studied with various mono and divalent metal cations and it was observed that most cations either quenches the fluorescence or remains unchanged except for Cd2+, which shows a slight enhancement in fluorescence intensity of 1. The ratiometric displacement of Cd2+ ions by Zn2+ ions shows an excellent selectivity towards in-situ detection of Zn2+ ions. Photo-physical studies also support the reversible binding of 1 to Zn2+ ions having on and off mechanism in presence of EDTA. Such recognition of the biologically important zinc ions finds potential application in live cell imaging.

Abstract
Efforts were made to develop a simple new approach for the green synthesis of surface-passivated carbon dots from edible prickly pear cactus fruit as the carbon source by a one-pot hydrothermal route. Glutathione (GSH) was passivated on the surface of the CDs to form a sensor probe, which exhibited excellent optical properties and water solubility. The prepared sensor was successfully characterized by UV-visible spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The simple sensing platform developed by the GSH-CDs was highly sensitive and selective with a “turn-off” fluorescence response for the dual detection of As3+ and ClO− ions in drinking water. This sensing system exhibited effective quenching in the presence of As3+ and ClO− ions to display the formation of metal complexes and surface interaction with an oxygen functional group. The oxygen-rich GSH-CDs afforded a better selectivity for As3+/ClO− ions over other competitive ions. The fluorescence quenching measurement quantified the concentration range as 2–12 nM and 10–90 μM with the lower detection limit of 2.3 nM and 0.016 μM for the detection of As3+ and ClO− ions, respectively. Further, we explored the potential applications of this simple, reliable, and cost-effective sensor for the detection of As3+/ClO− ions in environmental samples for practical analysis. Efforts were made to develop a simple new approach for the green synthesis of surface-passivated carbon dots from edible prickly pear cactus fruit as the carbon source by a one-pot hydrothermal route.![]()
