Synthesis of an Imprinted Hybrid Organic−Inorganic Polymeric Sol−Gel Matrix Toward the Specific Binding and Isotherm Kinetics Investigation of Creatinine

Molecularly imprinted polymer specific to creatinine complex with copper(II) ions for voltammetric determination of creatinine

Synthesis of creatinine-imprinted polymer is challenging because of its insolubility in aprotic solvents, traditionally utilized for synthesizing molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). Moreover, creatinine is not electroactive at conventional electrodes, and thus, introducing an electrochemical sensing platform for its determination is a difficult target. This study addressed the above-cited issues to introduce a novel creatinine voltammetric sensor with high selectivity and sensitivity. Creatinine-copper complex was found to be soluble in acetonitrile and was utilized as a template for the MIP synthesis. Methacrylic acid, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and azobisisobutyronitrile were used as functional monomers, cross-linker, and initiator, respectively. The MIP holding creatinine sites were used to modify the carbon paste electrode. Since creatinine did not exhibit a significant voltammetric signal, an indirect sensing technique was employed. This was based on using Cu(II) ion as an electrochemical probe. The MIP-modified electrode signal for copper ion was significantly improved in the presence of creatinine. However, the introduction of creatinine in the Cu(II) solution did not affect the NIP-modified electrode response to copper ion. The proposed sensor indicated a linear current response in the range 1 × 10^-7-1 × 10^-5 mol L^-1 with a detection limit of 5.9 × 10^-8 mol L^-1 (S/N = 3). Moreover, this method presents excellent performance in real sample analysis, with values of favorable creatinine recovery in plasma. The system exhibits acceptable precision (RSD = 4.04) and favorable selectivity toward creatinine.

Influence of Size and Shape of Silica Supports on the Sol⁻Gel Surface Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Selective Adsorption of Gossypol

The influence of various silica gel supports with different shapes and sizes on the recognition properties of surface molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) was investigated. MIPs for selective recognition and adsorption of gossypol were synthesized via the sol⁻gel process with a surface imprinting technique on silica gel substrates. 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) were chosen as the functional monomer and the cross-linker. The morphology and structure of the gossypol-MIPs were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and a standard Brunauer⁻Emett⁻Teller (BET) analysis. Results indicated that the surface imprinted polymer layer facilitated the removal and rebinding of the template, and thus, achieved fast binding kinetics. Compared with the MIPs prepared on irregularly shaped silica with a broad particle size distribution, the MIPs using regularly-shaped silica of uniform size showed higher imprinting factor (IF), and the MIP made with a relatively larger sized (60 μm) spherical silica, demonstrated higher adsorption capacity compared to the MIPs made with smaller sized, spherical silica. The MIP prepared with 60 μm spherically shaped silica, featured a fast adsorption kinetic of 10 min, and a saturated adsorption capacity of 204 mg·g−1. The gossypol-MIP had higher selectivity (IF = 2.20) for gossypol over its structurally-similar analogs ellagic acid (IF = 1.13) and quercetin (IF = 1.20). The adsorption data of the MIP correlated well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model, which implied that chemical adsorption dominated, and that multilayer adsorption occurred. Furthermore, the MIP exhibited an excellent regeneration performance, and the adsorption capacity of the MIP for gossypol only decreased by 6% after six reused cycles, indicating good application potential for selective adsorption of gossypol.

Morphology and kinetic modeling of molecularly imprinted organosilanol polymer matrix for specific uptake of creatinine

Molecular imprinting is an emerging technique to create imprinted polymers that can be applied in affinity-based separation, in particular, biomimetic sensors. In this study, the matrix of siloxane bonds prepared from the polycondensation of hydrolyzed tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was employed as the inorganic monomer for the formation of a creatinine (Cre)-based molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). Doped aluminium ion (Al(3+)) was used as the functional cross-linker that generated Lewis acid sites in the confined silica matrix to interact with Cre via sharing of lone pair electrons. Surface morphologies and pore characteristics of the synthesized MIP were determined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) analyses, respectively. The imprinting efficiency of MIPs was then evaluated through the adsorption of Cre with regard to molar ratios of Al(3+). A Cre adsorption capacity of up to 17.40 mg Cre g(-1) MIP was obtained and adsorption selectivity of Cre to its analogues creatine (Cr) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (N-hyd) were found to be 3.90 ± 0.61 and 4.17 ± 3.09, respectively. Of all the studied MIP systems, chemisorption was predicted as the rate-limiting step in the binding of Cre. The pseudo-second-order chemical reaction kinetic provides the best correlation of the experimental data. Furthermore, the equilibrium adsorption capacity of MIP fit well with a Freundlich isotherm (R (2) = 0.98) in which the heterogeneous surface was defined.

Molecular imprinting science and technology: a survey of the literature for the years 2004-2011

Herein, we present a survey of the literature covering the development of molecular imprinting science and technology over the years 2004-2011. In total, 3779 references to the original papers, reviews, edited volumes and monographs from this period are included, along with recently identified uncited materials from prior to 2004, which were omitted in the first instalment of this series covering the years 1930-2003. In the presentation of the assembled references, a section presenting reviews and monographs covering the area is followed by sections describing fundamental aspects of molecular imprinting including the development of novel polymer formats. Thereafter, literature describing efforts to apply these polymeric materials to a range of application areas is presented. Current trends and areas of rapid development are discussed.

Molecular imprinted polymer of methacrylic acid functionalised β-cyclodextrin for selective removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol

This work describes methacrylic acid functionalized β-cyclodextrin (MAA-βCD) as a novel functional monomer in the preparation of molecular imprinted polymer (MIP MAA-βCD) for the selective removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). The polymer was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) techniques. The influence of parameters such as solution pH, contact time, temperature and initial concentrations towards removal of 2,4-DCP using MIP MAA-βCD have been evaluated. The imprinted material shows fast kinetics and the optimum pH for removal of 2,4-DCP is pH 7. Compared with the corresponding non-imprinted polymer (NIP MAA-βCD), the MIP MAA-βCD exhibited higher adsorption capacity and outstanding selectivity towards 2,4-DCP. Freundlich isotherm best fitted the adsorption equilibrium data of MIP MAA-βCD and the kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model. The calculated thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption of 2,4-DCP was spontaneous and exothermic under the examined conditions.

Ultrasensitive detection of bisphenol A in aqueous media using photoresponsive surface molecular imprinting polymer microspheres

Fabrication and evaluation of magnetic/hollow double-shelled imprinted sorbents formed by Pickering emulsion polymerization

Magnetic/hollow double-shelled imprinted polymers (MH-MIPs) were synthesized by Pickering emulsion polymerization. In this method, attapulgite (ATP) particles were used as stabilizers to establish a stable oil-in-water emulsion, and a few hydrophilic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were allowed to be magnetic separation carriers. The imprinting system was fabricated by radical polymerization in the presence of the functional and polymeric monomers in the oil phase. The results of characterization indicated that MH-MIPs exhibited magnetic sensitivity (Ms = 4.76 emu g(-1)), thermal stability (especially below 200 °C), and hollow structure and were composed of exterior ATP shells and interior imprinted polymers shells. Then MH-MIPs were evaluated as sorbents for the selective binding of λ-cyhalothrin as a result of their magnetism, enhanced mechanical strength, hydrophilic surface, and recognition ability. The kinetic properties of MH-MIPs were well described by the pseudo-second-order equation, indicating that the chemical process could be the rate-limiting step in the adsorption process for λ-cyhalothrin. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of MH-MIPs was 60.06 μmol g(-1) at 25 °C, and the Langmuir isotherm model gave a better fit to the experimental data, indicating the monolayer molecular adsorption for λ-cyhalothrin. The selective recognition experiments also demonstrated the high affinity and selectivity of MH-MIIPs toward λ-cyhalothrin over fenvalerate and diethyl phthalate.

Electrochemical sensor based on chlorohemin modified molecularly imprinted microgel for determination of 2,4-dichlorophenol

A newly designed molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized and successfully utilized as a recognition element of an amperometric sensor for 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) detection. The MIP with a well-defined structure could imitate the dehalogenative function of the natural enzyme chloroperoxidase for 2,4-DCP. Imprinted sensor was fabricated in situ on a glassy carbon electrode surface by drop-coating the 2,4-DCP imprinted microgel suspension and chitosan/Nafion mixture. Under optimized conditions, the sensor showed a linear response in the range of 5.0-100 μmol L(-1) with a detection limit of 1.6 μmol L(-1). Additionally, the imprinted sensor demonstrated higher affinity to target 2,4-DCP over competitive chlorophenolic compounds than non-imprinted sensor. It also exhibited good stability and acceptable repeatability. The proposed sensor could be used for the determination of 2,4-DCP in water samples with the recoveries of 96.2-111.8%, showing a promising potential in practical application.
