Abstract
We studied the conformational behavior of silicon-containing dendrimers during their adsorption onto a flat impenetrable surface by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Four homologous series of dendrimers from the 4th up to the 7th generations were modeled, namely, two types of carbosilane dendrimers differing by the functionality of the core Si atom and two types of siloxane dendrimers with different lengths of the spacers. Comparative analysis of the fractions of adsorbed atoms belonging to various structural layers within dendrimers as well as density profiles allowed us to elucidate not only some general trends but also the effects determined by dendrimer specificity. In particular, it was found that in contrast to the carbosilane dendrimers interacting with the adsorbing surface mainly by their peripheral layers, the siloxane dendrimers with the longer -O-Si(CH3)2-O spacers expose atoms from their interior to the surface spreading out on it. These findings are important for the design of functional materials on the basis of silicon-containing dendrimers.

Abstract
To overcome the time and space constraints in disease diagnosis via the biosensing approach, we developed a new signal-transducing strategy that can be applied to colorimetric optical biosensors. Our study is focused on implementation of a signal transduction technology that can directly translate the color intensity signals—that require complicated optical equipment for the analysis—into signals that can be easily counted with the naked eye. Based on the selective light absorption and wavelength-filtering principles, our new optical signaling transducer was built from a common computer monitor and a smartphone. In this signal transducer, the liquid crystal display (LCD) panel of the computer monitor served as a light source and a signal guide generator. In addition, the smartphone was used as an optical receiver and signal display. As a biorecognition layer, a transparent and soft material-based biosensing channel was employed generating blue output via a target-specific bienzymatic chromogenic reaction. Using graphics editor software, we displayed the optical signal guide patterns containing multiple polygons (a triangle, circle, pentagon, heptagon, and 3/4 circle, each associated with a specified color ratio) on the LCD monitor panel. During observation of signal guide patterns displayed on the LCD monitor panel using a smartphone camera via the target analyte-loaded biosensing channel as a color-filtering layer, the number of observed polygons changed according to the concentration of the target analyte via the spectral correlation between absorbance changes in a solution of the biosensing channel and color emission properties of each type of polygon. By simple counting of the changes in the number of polygons registered by the smartphone camera, we could efficiently measure the concentration of a target analyte in a sample without complicated and expensive optical instruments. In a demonstration test on glucose as a model analyte, we could easily measure the concentration of glucose in the range from 0 to 10 mM.

Abstract
The use of a robust optical signaling probe with a high signal-to-noise ratio is important in the development of immunoassays. Lanthanide chelates are a promising material for this purpose, which provide time-resolved luminescence (TRL) due to their large Stokes shift and long luminescence lifetime. From this, they have attracted considerable interest in the in vitro diagnostics field. However, the direct use of lanthanide chelates is limited because their luminescent signal can be easily affected by various quenchers. To overcome this drawback, strategies that rely on the entrapment of lanthanide chelates inside nanoparticles, thereby enabling the protection of the lanthanide chelate from water, have been reported. However, the poor stability of the lanthanide-entrapped nanoparticles results in a significant fluctuation in TRL signal intensity, and this still remains a challenging issue. To address this, we have developed a Lanthanide chelate-Encapsulated Silica Nano Particle (LESNP) as a new immunosensing probe. In this approach, the lanthanide chelate is covalently crosslinked within the silane monomer during the silica nanoparticle formation. The resulting LESNP is physically stable and retains TRL properties of the parent lanthanide chelate. Using the probe, a highly sensitive, sandwich-based TRL immunoassay for the cardiac troponin I was conducted, exhibiting a limit of detection of 48 pg/mL. On the basis of the features of the LESNP such as TRL signaling capability, stability, and the ease of biofunctionalization, we expect that the LESNP can be widely applied in the development of TRL-based immunosensing.

Abstract
This study describes a high-performance electrochemical aptasensor which is employed to detect Ibuprofen (IBP) as a painkiller drug by using a novel platform as an integrated sensing interface. In order to make the aptasensor, the Den-QD bioconjugate was immobilized on the surface of a GC electrode and followed the Apt was incubated on this surface. The incubation of the IBP on the aptasensor surface and the formation of the Apt/IBP complex, led to a hindered electron transfer reaction on the sensing surface, which decreased the peak current of the redox probe. Under the optimum condition, the assay had two dynamic ranges with a detection limit down to 333fM. The developed aptasensor reliably detects IBP in a real sample. Our results demonstrated that the proposed strategy has many advantages and the Den-QD bioconjugate may become a promising nanocomposite for the electrochemical sensing applications.

Abstract
Cytochromes P450 (CYP, P450) are a large family of heme-active-site proteins involved in many catalytic processes, including steroidogenesis. In humans, four primary enzymes are involved in the metabolism of almost all xenobiotics. Among these enzymes, CYP3A4 is responsible for the inactivation of the majority of used drugs which makes this enzyme an interesting target for many fields of research, especially pharmaceutical research. Since the late 1970s, attempts have been made to construct and develop electrochemical sensors for the determination of substrates. This paper is concerned with the establishment of such a CYP3A4-containing biosensor. The sensor was constructed by adsorption of alternating layers of sub-nanometer gold particle-modified PAMAM (poly-amido-amine) dendrimers of generation 4.0, along with the enzyme by a layer-by-layer assembly technique. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were employed to elucidate the sensor assembly. Additionally, the biosensor was tested by cyclic voltammetry using caffeine as a substrate.

Abstract
Layer-by-layer self-assembly is an approach to develop an ultrathin film on solid support by alternate exposure to positive and negative species with spontaneous deposition of the oppositely charged ions. This paper summarizes various approaches used for fabrication of layer-by-layer self-assembly as well as their utility to produce various devices. The layer-by-layer technique is basically used for formation of multilayer films. A variety of nanomaterials use it for the modification of films to enhance their resultant durability as well as strength. Studies have shown that many different types of materials can be used for fabrication of multilayers. Recently the layer-by-layer self-assembly technique has also been used for fabrication of gas sensors, hydrogen sensors and solar-based cells. Various methods, such as spin deposition, calcinations, and dry-transfer printing are being used for fabrication of thin films. In this review, the author summarizes the various interesting properties as well as fabrication strategies of layer-by-layer self-assembly.

Abstract
We review the synthesis of dendrimer-containing layer-by-layer (LbL) assemblies and their applications, including biosensing, controlled drug release, and bio-imaging. Dendrimers can be built into LbL films and microcapsules by alternating deposition of dendrimers and counter polymers on the surface of flat substrates and colloidal microparticles through electrostatic bonding, hydrogen bonding, covalent bonding, and biological affinity. Dendrimer-containing LbL assemblies have been used to construct biosensors, in which electron transfer mediators and metal nanoparticles are often coupled with dendrimers. Enzymes have been successfully immobilized on the surface of electrochemical and optical transducers by forming enzyme/dendrimer LbL multilayers. In this way, high-performance enzyme sensors are fabricated. In addition, dendrimer LbL films and microcapsules are useful for constructing drug delivery systems because dendrimers bind drugs to form inclusion complexes or the dendrimer surface is covalently modified with drugs. Magnetic resonance imaging of cancer cells by iron oxide nanoparticles coated with dendrimer LbL film is also discussed.

Abstract
Herein, both electrostatic and covalent layer-by-layer assembly were used for the construction of multicomposite thin films using a ferrocene-modified linear poly(ethylenimine) redox polymer (Fc-C6-LPEI) as the cationic polyelectrolye, and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(glutamic acid) (PGA), or glucose oxidase (GOX) as the negative polyelectrolyte. The assembly of the multilayer films was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), UV/Vis spectroscopy, and ellipsometry with the enzymatic response of the films containing GOX being characterized via constant potential amperometry. CV measurements suggested that the successful buildup of multilayer films was dependent upon the nature of the anionic polyelectrolyte used. Electrostatic assembly of films composed of Fc-C6-LPEI and either PAA or PGA produced large oxidation peak current densities of 630 and 670 μA cm(-2), respectively, during cyclic voltammetry. Increased measured absorbance by UV/Vis spectroscopy and increased measured film thicknesses (400-600 nm) by ellipsometry provided additional evidence of successful film formation. In contrast, the films incorporating GOX that were electrostatically assembled surprisingly produced significantly lower electrochemical responses (12 μA cm(-2)), low absorbance values, and reduced film thicknesses (~15 nm), and glucose electro-oxidation current densities less than 1 μA cm(-2), which all suggested unstable or minimal film formation. Subsequently, we developed a covalent layer-by-layer approach to fabricate films of Fc-C6-LPEI/GOX by covalently linking the amine groups of Fc-C6-LPEI to the aldehyde groups of periodate-oxidized glucose oxidase. Covalent assembly of the Fc-C6-LPEI/GOX films produced oxidation peak current densities during cyclic voltammetry of 40 μA cm(-2) and glucose electro-oxidation current densities of 220 μA cm(-2). These films also showed an increase in their thicknesses (~140 nm) relative to the electrostatic GOX films. For the films containing either PAA or PGA, the pH of the polymer solutions used for construction was found to have a significant effect on the response of the multilayer films, and the electrochemical response of the Fc-C6-LPEI/PAA, Fc-C6-LPEI/PGA, or covalently assembled Fc-C6-LPEI/GOX films could be tuned by varying the number of bilayers (n=1-16) in the film. These results are important because this is the first report of the use of the novel Fc-C6-LPEI redox polymer in the successful development of multicomposite layer-by-layer films. The electrochemical response achieved with the covalently assembled Fc-C6-LPEI/GOX films demonstrates that this redox polymer and layer-by-layer assembly technique can be used for possible biosensor and biofuel applications, and the success of multiple anionic polyelectrolytes could lead to additional applications with other enzyme systems.

Abstract
This investigation, following our recent report on the one-pot hemi-micellar interfacial synthesis of Janus gold nanoclusters and the inter-cluster electron coupling establishing insulator-metal transition in the oriented Janus monolayers [Langmuir, 2010, 26(17), 14047], was to fabricate modified electrodes for sensing dopamine, the neurotransmitter. With a detection limit in the sub-nanomolar range, the apparent electron transfer rate constants for dopamine detection signified an intricate Janus cluster 2D phase dependency. Surface pressure as a thermodynamic variable controlled the electronic communication between the clusters as a result of varied inter-cluster distance and size, ultimately reflecting on the sensitivity and detection limit for dopamine sensing. The non-covalent nature of the ligands on the core metal clusters facilitated the overall electro-catalytic oxidation of dopamine. The notable feature of this precise work was that it established a more effective phase- and orientation-specific Janus cluster sensing than those reported through patterned gold nanowire based sensors.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the potential use of Prussian blue-coated magnetic nanoparticles, termed "Prussian blueberry", to bring about the magnetic elimination of cesium. METHODS Prussian blueberry were prepared by a layer-by-layer assembly method. The morphology, structure and physical properties of the Prussian blueberry were investigated as was their ability to magnetically eliminate cesium. RESULTS We confirmed that Prussian blueberry were composed of a magnetite nanoparticle-core and a Prussian blue-shell. Under a magnetic field, Prussian blueberry (5 mg) reduced the cesium concentration of seawater (3 ml) from 150 ppm to about 50 ppm; but regular Prussian blue could not magnetically eliminate cesium. Moreover, Prussian blueberry removed a similar proportion of cesium from a larger volume of seawater, and from fetal bovine serum and cow's milk. CONCLUSIONS Under a magnetic field, Prussian blueberry was able to rapidly eliminate cesium from seawater and from biological matrices such as serum and milk.

Abstract
A three-dimensional network PAMAM-Au nanocomposite (3D-PAMAM-Au NC) was prepared by using the first generation polyamidoamine dendrimer (G1 PAMAM) as the dispersant agent. The resultant 3D-PAMAM-Au NC was successfully used as an immobilization matrix for the construction of a reagentless mediator-free horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-based H(2)O(2) biosensor on a multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified glassy carbon electrode. With the advantages of the three-dimensional network, the organic-inorganic hybrid materials dramatically facilitate the direct electron transfer of HRP, and good bioelectrocatalytic activity towards H(2)O(2) was demonstrated. Under optimum conditions, the current response of the enzyme modified electrode at -0.30 V was detected. The current response is linearly correlated to H(2)O(2) concentration within the range of 18.00 μM to 20.80 mM with a correlation coefficient of 0.9992 and a sensitivity of 377.78 μA mM(-1) cm(-2). The detection limit was down to 6.72 μM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, the biosensor exhibits some other excellent characteristics, such as high selectivity, short response time, and long-term stability. The 3D-PAMAM-Au NC has proved to be a promising biosensing platform for the construction of mediator-free biosensors, and may find wide potential applications in biosensors, biocatalysis, bioelectronics and biofuel cells.

Abstract
The signal amplification technique of peptide nucleic acid (PNA)-based electrochemical DNA sensor was developed in a label-free and one-step method utilizing enzymatic catalysis. Electrochemical detection of DNA hybridization on a PNA-modified electrode is based on the change of surface charge caused by the hybridization of negatively charged DNA molecules. The negatively charged mediator, ferrocenedicarboxylic acid, cannot diffuse to the DNA hybridized electrode surface due to the charge repulsion with the hybridized DNA molecule while it can easily approach the neutral PNA-modified electrode surface without the hybridization. By employing glucose oxidase catalysis on this PNA-based electrochemical system, the oxidized mediator could be immediately reduced leading to greatly increased electrochemical signals. Using the enzymatic strategy, we successfully demonstrated its clinical utility by detecting one of the mutation sequences of the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1 at a sample concentration lower than 10(-9) M. Furthermore, a single base-mismatched sample could be also discriminated from a perfectly matched sample.

Abstract
Generation 0 through 5 polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers with three different types of groups connecting to hydrophobic C12 tails and one type of group connecting to C18 tails were synthesized and studied as monolayers at the air-water interface with a Langmuir trough. The molecular areas were significantly influenced by the size and the type of connecting group. Higher-generation (e.g., G4 and G5) amphiphilic PAMAMs with amide connecting groups were more responsive to changes in compression rate and subphase temperature and less stable than the corresponding opened epoxide- or ester-connected counterparts. Intramolecular (and possibly also intermolecular) attractive hydrogen-bond interactions between the amide connectors are proposed as the reason for this behavior.

Abstract
Self-assembled enzyme aggregates, prepared from magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, avidin, and a biotinylated redox enzyme, were shown particularly useful for the simple, fast, and efficient construction of highly enzyme-loaded electrodes with the help of a magnet. The approach was illustrated in the case of the bioelectrocatalytic oxidation of NADH by a diaphorase oxidoreductase in the presence of a ferrocene mediator. Two different self-assembling procedures were tested, taking advantage of the spontaneous aggregation of the nanoparticles in the presence of avidin and also of the multivalency binding of biotinylated diaphorase toward avidin. Activities of the bound and unbound diaphorase were systematically controlled allowing determination of the number of active biotinylated diaphorase per nanoparticle incorporated within each magnetic enzyme aggregate. An active enzyme loading capacity of up to 2.35 nmol mg-1 was found for the best nanostructured enzyme assembly, which is 200 times better than for commercialized magnetic micrometer-sized beads coated with streptavidin and saturated with diaphorase. With the help of a permanent magnet, the magnetic enzyme aggregates were finally magnetically collected as a film on the surface of a small screen-printed carbon electrode and the catalytic currents recorded by cyclic voltammetry. From the analysis of the steady-state catalytic current responses and the kinetic rate constants of biotinylated diaphorase, it was possible to determine the enzyme concentration within the magnetic films. Owing to the high enzyme loading in the aggregates of nanoparticles (i.e., 130 microM), the catalytic current responses were definitely higher than the ones measured at an electrode coated with a closed-packed monolayer of diaphorase or at an electrode covered with a film of magnetic micrometer-sized streptavidin beads saturated with diaphorase.
