Dissolution and Precipitation Dynamics at Environmental Mineral Interfaces Imaged by In Situ Atomic Force Microscopy

Interfacial interactions between minerals and organic matter: Mechanisms and characterizations

Minerals and organic matter are essential components of soil, with minerals acting as the "bone" and organic matter as the "skin". The interfacial interactions between minerals and organic matter result in changes in their chemical composition, structure, functional groups, and physical properties, possessing a significant impact on soil properties, functions, and biogeochemical cycles. Understanding the interfacial interactions of minerals and organic matter is imperative to advance soil remediation technologies and carbon targets. Consequently, there is a growing interest in the physicochemical identification of the interfacial interactions between minerals and organic matter in the academic community. This review provides an overview of the mechanisms underlying these interactions, including adsorption, co-precipitation, occlusion, redox, catalysis and dissolution. Moreover, it surveys various methods and techniques employed to characterize the mineral-organic matter interactions. Specifically, the up-to-date spectroscopic techniques for chemical information and advanced microscopy techniques for physical information are highlighted. The advantages and limitations of each method are also discussed. Finally, we outline future research directions for interfacial interactions and suggests areas for improvement and development of characterization techniques to better understand the mechanisms of mineral-organic matter interactions.

Silica Polymerization Driving Opposite Effects of pH on Aqueous Carbonation Using Crystalline and Amorphous Calcium Silicates

The aqueous carbonation of calcium silicate (CS), a representative alkaline-earth silicate, has been widely explored in studies of carbon dioxide (CO2) mineralization. In this context, we conducted a specific comparison of the carbonation behaviors between the crystalline calcium silicate (CCS) and amorphous calcium silicate (ACS) across a pH range from 9.0 to 12.0. Interestingly, we observed opposite pH dependencies in the carbonation efficiencies (i.e., CaO conversion into CaCO3 in 1 M Na2CO3/NaHCO3 solution under ambient conditions) of CCS and ACS─the carbonation efficiency of CCS decreased with increasing the solution basicity, while that of ACS showed an inverse trend. In-depth insights were gained through in situ Raman characterizations, indicating that these differing trends appeared to originate from the polymerization/depolymerization behaviors of silicates released from minerals. More specifically, higher pH conditions seemed to favor the carbonation of minerals containing polymerized silica networks. These findings may contribute to a better understanding of the fundamental factors influencing the carbonation behaviors of alkaline earth silicates through interfacial coupled dissolution and precipitation processes. Moreover, they offer valuable insights for selecting optimal carbonation conditions for alkaline-earth silicate minerals.

The solubility product controls the rate of calcite dissolution in pure water and seawater

Quantification of calcite dissolution underpins climate and oceanographic modelling. We report the factors controlling the rate at which individual crystals of calcite dissolved. Clear, generic criteria based on the change of calcite particle dimensions measured microscopically with time are established to indicate if dissolution occurs under kinetic or thermodynamic control. The dissolution of calcite crystals into water is unambiguously revealed to be under thermodynamic control such that the rate at which the crystal dissolved is controlled by the rate of diffusion of ions from a saturated surface layer adjacent to the calcite surface. As such the dissolution rate is controlled by the true stoichiometric solubility product which is inferred from the microscopic measurement as a function of the concentration of NaCl. Comparison with accepted literature values shows that the role of ion pairing at high ionic strengths as in seawater, specifically that of CaCO3 and other ion pairs, exerts a significant influence since these equilibria control the amount of dissolved calcium and carbonate ions in the later of solution immediately adjacent to the solid.

Cooperative roles of phosphate and dissolved organic matter in inhibiting ferrihydrite transformation and their distinct fates

Phosphate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) mediate the crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite catalyzed by Fe(II) in subsurface environments such as soils and groundwater. However, the cooperative mechanisms underlying the mediation of phosphate and DOM in crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite and the feedback effects on their own distribution and speciation remain unresolved. In this study, solid characterization indicates that phosphate and DOM can collectively inhibit the crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite to lepidocrocite and thus goethite, via synergetic effects of inhibiting recrystallization and electron transfer. Phosphate can be retained on the surface or transformed to a nonextractable form within Fe oxyhydroxides; DOM is either released into the solution or preserved in an extractable form, while it is not incorporated or retained in the interior. Element distribution and DOM composition analysis on Fe oxyhydroxides reveals even distribution of phosphate on the newly formed Fe oxyhydroxides, while the distribution of DOM depends on its specific species. Electrochemical and dynamic force spectroscopic results provide molecular-scale thermodynamic evidence explaining the inhibition of electron transfer between Fe(II) and ferrihydrite by phosphate and DOM, thus influecing the crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite and the distribution of phosphate and DOM. This study provides new insights into the coupled biogeological cycle of Fe with phosphate and DOM in aquatic and terrestrial environments.

Modelling biogeochemical reactions triggered by graphene's addition in a fertilized calcareous sandy soil

Graphene production has dramatically increased in the last years and new ways to recycle this engineered material need to be investigated. To this purpose, a reactive model network was developed using PHREEQC-3 code to quantify the relevant biogeochemical reactions induced by graphene scraps' incorporation in a calcareous sandy soil. The numerical model was calibrated versus a complete dataset of column experiments in water saturated conditions using two different fertilizers, a synthetic NPK fertilizer and fertigation water produced in a wastewater treatment plant. Column experiments consisted of 50 cm columns filled with a mixture of graphene scraps (0.015 % dry weight) and soil in the first 10 cm, while the remaining 40 cm had only soil. The model performance was tested using classical statistical indices (R2, Modelling Efficiency, and Index of Agreement), resulting to be satisfactory. Besides, a simple sensitivity analysis via the perturbation of relevant parameters showed a low degree of uncertainty. The main outcome of this study was the quantification of the increased denitrification rate triggered by graphene incorporation into the soil. Moreover, graphene incorporation substantially increased soil CEC and DOC sorption capacity, demonstrating a good adsorption capacity for ammonium and organic compounds, thus decreasing nutrients leaching that represents a major concern related to agricultural practice. Indeed, Graphene incorporation increased by 40 % the CEC in the first 10 cm of the CSG_NPK column (2.50e-02 mol/L) respect to the CS_NPK column (1.75e-02 mol/L) and increased it by 150 % in the first 10 cm of the CSG_FW column (2.50e-02 mol/L) in comparison with the CS_FW column 1.00e-02 (mol/L). pH fluctuations were most likely due to the precipitation of Ca5(PO4)3OH, indeed the consumption of H+ ions could have triggered the pH lowering during the experiment. These results could be relevant for future graphene applications as a soil improver or as suitable material to enhance soil bioremediation in order to include graphene in a circular economy loop.

Different Dissolution Molecular Pathways of Azilsartan Crystals with Different Forms Revealed by In Situ Atomic Force Microscopy

Here, using in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM), the dissolution behaviors and dissolution molecular pathways of two azilsartan crystals, the isopropanol solvate (AZ-IPA), and form I (AZ-I), in pure water and 6-30% poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) aqueous solutions are revealed. The dissolution behaviors of step retreat and etch pit formation are observed on the (100) faces of the two crystals, with a single step corresponding to one molecular monolayer in crystal structures. Etching rates of pits increase with PEG concentration. Furthermore, our results show that AZ-IPA dissolves by the direct detachment of molecules from the step front to solution. Such a mechanism remains even when the PEG concentration changes. However, AZ-I dissolves primarily by the surface diffusion mechanism involving molecular detachment from the step front at first and then diffusion over the terraces before desorption into solution. PEG promotes the dissolution of AZ-I crystals by favoring the molecular detachment from the step front.

Oxide- and Silicate-Water Interfaces and Their Roles in Technology and the Environment

Interfacial reactions drive all elemental cycling on Earth and play pivotal roles in human activities such as agriculture, water purification, energy production and storage, environmental contaminant remediation, and nuclear waste repository management. The onset of the 21st century marked the beginning of a more detailed understanding of mineral aqueous interfaces enabled by advances in techniques that use tunable high-flux focused ultrafast laser and X-ray sources to provide near-atomic measurement resolution, as well as by nanofabrication approaches that enable transmission electron microscopy in a liquid cell. This leap into atomic- and nanometer-scale measurements has uncovered scale-dependent phenomena whose reaction thermodynamics, kinetics, and pathways deviate from previous observations made on larger systems. A second key advance is new experimental evidence for what scientists hypothesized but could not test previously, namely, interfacial chemical reactions are frequently driven by "anomalies" or "non-idealities" such as defects, nanoconfinement, and other nontypical chemical structures. Third, progress in computational chemistry has yielded new insights that allow a move beyond simple schematics, leading to a molecular model of these complex interfaces. In combination with surface-sensitive measurements, we have gained knowledge of the interfacial structure and dynamics, including the underlying solid surface and the immediately adjacent water and aqueous ions, enabling a better definition of what constitutes the oxide- and silicate-water interfaces. This critical review discusses how science progresses from understanding ideal solid-water interfaces to more realistic systems, focusing on accomplishments in the last 20 years and identifying challenges and future opportunities for the community to address. We anticipate that the next 20 years will focus on understanding and predicting dynamic transient and reactive structures over greater spatial and temporal ranges as well as systems of greater structural and chemical complexity. Closer collaborations of theoretical and experimental experts across disciplines will continue to be critical to achieving this great aspiration.

Direct Atomic-Scale Insight into the Precipitation Formation at the Lanthanum Hydroxide Nanoparticle/Solution Interface

Understanding precipitation formation at lanthanum hydroxide (La(OH)₃) nanoparticle-solution interfaces plays a crucial role in catalysis, adsorption, and electrochemical energy storage applications. Liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy enables powerful visualization with high resolution. However, direct atomic-scale imaging of the interfacial metal (hydro)oxide nanostructure in solutions has been a major challenge due to their beam-driven dissolution. Combining focused ion beam and aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, we present an atomic-scale study of precipitation formation at La(OH)₃ nanoparticle interfaces after reaction with phosphate. The structure transformation is observed to occur at high- and low-crystalline La(OH)₃ nanoparticle surfaces. Low-crystalline La(OH)₃ mostly transformed and high-crystalline ones partly converted to LaPO₄ precipitations on the outer surface. The long-term structure evolution shows the low transformation of high-crystalline La(OH)₃ nanoparticles to LaPO₄ precipitation. Because precipitation at solid-solution interfaces is common in nature and industry, these results could provide valuable references for their atomic-scale observation.

How water desorbs from calcite

The desorption of water from calcite (10.4) reveals that the (2 × 1) surface reconstruction not only persist at room temperature but crucially influences the surface properties.

A fluorescent probe derived from Berberrubine for detecting hydrogen polysulfide in food samples

In this work, we chose the fluorophore Berberrubine to develop a selective probe for hydrogen polysulfide (H₂S_n), and applied it into the detection in both food samples and living cells. The developed probe, HER9SS, suggested practical steadiness and serviceability, especially for multi-scene detection. The detecting system was stable in relatively wide pH (7.0-11.0) and temperature (25-45 °C) ranges. Both the storage of BER9SS in solid or in solution could maintain the steadiness over 7 d. BER9SS also indicated advantages including rapid response (within 15 min), high sensitivity (LOD = 0.02 μM; LOQ = 0.01 μM), long linear range (0-15.0 equivalent) and high selectivity among competing analytes. The recovery ranging in 95.23% - 104.8% in the applications in food sources samples (including water and plants) and food samples inferred the practical potential of BER9SS. In biological imaging, BER9SS could achieve both the dose-dependent monitoring and the β-lapachone-induced generation of H₂S_n. Therefore, the information in this work might be useful for the development of fluorescent probes from natural products for multi-scene applications in future, especially with the corresponding attentions on the practicability and serviceability.

Efficient, scalable, closed-loop synthesis of highly crystalline pure phase MgAl-layered double hydroxides intercalated with hydroxyl anions

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) can play an important role in various areas, but conventional LDHs synthesis often causes product agglomeration and generates plenty of high-salt wastewater, and requires a time-consuming aging process to reach the desired purity and crystalline state. Herein, we report the synthesis of MgAl-LDH, a representative of these kinds of ionic lamellar inorganic solids, with a novel method involving the reaction of magnesium oxide (MgO) with aluminate ions (Al(OH)₄^-) in a strongly alkaline environment. The formation of MgAl-LDH follows a mechanism of interfacial dissolution-reprecipitation (IDR), i.e., Mg²⁺ ions released at the interface of dissolved MgO react immediately with Al(OH)₄^- ions to reprecipitate as MgAl-LDH. The obtained MgAl-LDH has no impurity phases and shows high crystallinity, high specific surface area, and a narrow particle size distribution. Moreover, MgAl-LDH is intercalated with OH^- anions, so it can be directly used as a Brønsted base catalyst and ion exchanger. The novel method requires no time-consuming aging process and is highly scalable. It is also shown that a closed-loop synthesis of MgAl-LDH without waste discharge can be achieved with an appropriate Al source, e.g., Al(OH)₃, and a recycled NaOH solution.

Polymer-Inorganic Crystalline Nanocomposite Materials via Nanoparticle Occlusion

Efficient occlusion of guest nanoparticles into host single crystals opens up a straightforward and versatile way to construct functional crystalline nanocomposites. This new technique has attracted increasing research interest because it enables the composition, structure and property of the resulting nanocomposites to be well-controlled. In this review article, we aim to provide a comprehensive summary of nanoparticle occlusion within inorganic crystals. First, we summarize recently-developed strategies for the occlusion of various colloidal particles (e.g., diblock copolymer nanoparticles, polymer-modified inorganic nanoparticles, oil droplets, etc.) within host crystals (e.g., CaCO₃ , ZnO or ZIF-8). Second, new results pertaining to spatially-controlled occlusion and the physical mechanism of nanoparticle occlusion are briefly discussed. Finally, we highlight the physicochemical properties and potential applications of various functional nanocomposite crystals constructed via nanoparticle occlusion and we also offer our perspective on the likely future for this research topic. Operando Characterization of Organic Mixed Ionic/Electronic Conducting Materials

Operando characterization plays an important role in revealing the structure-property relationships of organic mixed ionic/electronic conductors (OMIECs), enabling the direct observation of dynamic changes during device operation and thus guiding the development of new materials. This review focuses on the application of different operando characterization techniques in the study of OMIECs, highlighting the time-dependent and bias-dependent structure, composition, and morphology information extracted from these techniques. We first illustrate the needs, requirements, and challenges of operando characterization then provide an overview of relevant experimental techniques, including spectroscopy, scattering, microbalance, microprobe, and electron microscopy. We also compare different in silico methods and discuss the interplay of these computational methods with experimental techniques. Finally, we provide an outlook on the future development of operando for OMIEC-based devices and look toward multimodal operando techniques for more comprehensive and accurate description of OMIECs.

Bridging Microbial Functional Traits With Localized Process Rates at Soil Interfaces

In this review, we introduce microbially-mediated soil processes, players, their functional traits, and their links to processes at biogeochemical interfaces [e.g., rhizosphere, detritusphere, (bio)-pores, and aggregate surfaces]. A conceptual view emphasizes the central role of the rhizosphere in interactions with other biogeochemical interfaces, considering biotic and abiotic dynamic drivers. We discuss the applicability of three groups of traits based on microbial physiology, activity state, and genomic functional traits to reflect microbial growth in soil. The sensitivity and credibility of modern molecular approaches to estimate microbial-specific growth rates require further development. A link between functional traits determined by physiological (e.g., respiration, biomarkers) and genomic (e.g., genome size, number of ribosomal gene copies per genome, expression of catabolic versus biosynthetic genes) approaches is strongly affected by environmental conditions such as carbon, nutrient availability, and ecosystem type. Therefore, we address the role of soil physico-chemical conditions and trophic interactions as drivers of microbially-mediated soil processes at relevant scales for process localization. The strengths and weaknesses of current approaches (destructive, non-destructive, and predictive) for assessing process localization and the corresponding estimates of process rates are linked to the challenges for modeling microbially-mediated processes in heterogeneous soil microhabitats. Finally, we introduce a conceptual self-regulatory mechanism based on the flexible structure of active microbial communities. Microbial taxa best suited to each successional stage of substrate decomposition become dominant and alter the community structure. The rates of decomposition of organic compounds, therefore, are dependent on the functional traits of dominant taxa and microbial strategies, which are selected and driven by the local environment.

Short-chain soluble polyphosphate fertilizers increased soil P availability and mobility by reducing P fixation in two contrasting calcareous soils

Short-chain polyphosphate fertilizers have been increasingly applied in agriculture, but little is known about the chemical behaviors of polyphosphate in soils. Herein, a cylinder experiment was carried out to investigate the influences of different P types (i.e., mono-ammonium phosphate (MAP), phosphoric acid (PA) and ammonium polyphosphate (poly-P)) and their application methods (single vs split) on the mobility and availability of P in soil through a column millimeter-scale slice cutting method; meanwhile a soil microcosm experiment (560-day) was conducted to investigate the effects of different P types on phosphorus dynamic transformation. Polyphosphate addition significantly increased P mobility. The average distance of P downward movement (81.5 mm) in soil profile in the poly-P application treatment increased by 33.6% and 81.1%, respectively, compared to the MAP and PA treatments. Different P application methods also markedly influenced phosphorus mobility. For instance, the average distance of P vertical movement in the split P application treatment was 21.2% higher than in the single application treatment, indicating that split P addition significantly increased P downward movement. Moreover, polyphosphate application decreased soil P fixation by blocking the transformation of the applied-P from labile to recalcitrant forms (HCl-P and residual-P). Overall, our findings provide meaningful information to current phosphorus fertilization practice in increasing soil P mobility and bioavailability. We suggest that polyphosphate could be regarded as an alternative P source used in agriculture, and split polyphosphate application is recommended as an effective P fertilization strategy.

Dynamic force spectroscopy for quantifying single-molecule organo–mineral interactions

Organo–mineral interactions have long been the focus in the fields of biomineralization and geomineralization, since such interactions not only modulate the dynamics of crystal nucleation and growth but may also change crystal phases, morphologies, and structures.
