Supramolecular Purely Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

2,3 : 6,7-Naphthalene Bis(dicarboximide) Cyclophane: A Photofunctional Host for Ambient Delayed Fluorescence in Solution

Harvesting triplet excitons of heavy atom-free purely organic chromophores under aerated conditions is challenging due to the quenching of long-lived triplet states by molecular oxygen and vibrational dissipation. Herein, we show a supramolecular approach of triplet harvesting via mitigating quenching pathways of a triplet harvester. Specifically, we used a host-guest system based on 2,3 : 6,7-naphthalene bis(dicarboximide)-derived cyclophane (NBICy) and carbazole derivative (EtCz). Complexation studies and single-crystal X-ray analysis showed the formation of a rigid host-guest complex (K≈104 M-1 in CCl4), resulting in triplet-exciton stabilization under aerated conditions via mitigating vibrational interference and oxygen quenching. Photophysical studies elucidate the delayed fluorescence emission from the charge-transfer state (1CT) with a quantum yield (QY) of 6-8 % under ambient conditions which increased up to 36 % in an inert atmosphere.

An Organophosphorescence Probe with Ultralong Lifetime and Intrinsic Tissue Selectivity for Specific Tumor Imaging and Guided Tumor Surgery

Organic phosphorescent materials are excellent candidates for use in tumor imaging. However, a systematic comparison of the effects of the intensity, lifetime, and wavelength of phosphorescent emissions on bioimaging performance has not yet been undertaken. In addition, there have been few reports on organic phosphorescent materials that specifically distinguish tumors from normal tissues. This study addresses these gaps and reveals that longer lifetimes effectively increase the signal intensity, whereas longer wavelengths enhance the penetration depth. Conversely, a strong emission intensity with a short lifetime does not necessarily yield robust imaging signals. Building upon these findings, an organo-phosphorescent material with a lifetime of 0.94 s was designed for tumor imaging. Remarkably, the phosphorescent signals of various organic nanoparticles are nearly extinguished in blood-rich organs because of the quenching effect of iron ions. Moreover, for the first time, we demonstrated that iron ions universally quench the phosphorescence of organic room-temperature phosphorescent materials, which is an inherent property of such substances. Leveraging this property, both the normal liver and hepatitis tissues exhibit negligible phosphorescent signals, whereas liver tumors display intense phosphorescence. Therefore, phosphorescent materials, unlike chemiluminescent or fluorescent materials, can exploit this unique inherent property to selectively distinguish liver tumor tissues from normal tissues without additional modifications or treatments.

Achieving Near-Infrared Phosphorescence Supramolecular Hydrogel Based on Amphiphilic Bromonaphthalimide Pyridinium Hierarchical Assembly

Phosphorescent supramolecular hydrogels are currently a prevalent topic for their great promise in various photonic applications. Herein, an efficient near-infrared (NIR) phosphorescence supramolecular hydrogel is reported via the hierarchical assembly strategy in aqueous solution, which is fabricated from amphiphilic bromonaphthalimide pyridinium derivative (G), exfoliated Laponite (LP) nanosheets, and polymeric polyacrylamide (PAAm). Initially, G spontaneously self-aggregates into spherical nanoparticles covered with positively charged pyridinium units and emits single fluorescence at 410 nm. Driven by electrostatic interactions with negatively charged nanosheets, the nanoparticles subsequently function as the cross-linked binders and coassemble with LP into supramolecular hydrogels with an engendered red room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) up to 620 nm. Benefiting from hydrogen-bonding interactions-mediated physical cross-linkage, the further introduction of PAAm not only significantly elevates the mechanical strength of the hydrogels showing fast self-healing capability, but also increases phosphorescence lifetime from 2.49 to 4.20 ms, especially generating phosphorescence at even higher temperature (τ 363 K = 2.46 ms). Additionally, efficient RTP energy transfer occurs after doping a small amount of organic dye heptamethine cyanine (IR780) as an acceptor into hydrogels, resulting in a long-lived NIR emission at 823 nm with a high donor/acceptor ratio, which is successfully applied for cell labeling in the NIR window.

Highly transparent cellulose-based phosphorescent materials with tunable afterglow colors and white emission

Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with wood as framework are highly desirable due to their extended afterglow, high haze and good mechanical properties, which is highly desired in lighting materials. However, it remains challenging to obtain wood-based RTP materials that possess on-demand afterglow colors while maintaining high transparency across the entire visible spectrum. In this study, long-persistent phosphorescent transparent composite with tunable afterglow color is fabricated by infiltrating delignified wood with phosphors (including carbazole, naphthalene, and pyrene) doped polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Such RTP woods indicate remarkable transparency, over 70 %, and an extended afterglow duration of up to 8 s. Here, PMMA serves as rigid surrounding to suppress the non-radiative transition of phosphors to ensure phosphorescence, and to fulfill in the wood lumen to match the refractive index of cellulose for transparency. By formulating phosphors with different types and concentration ratios, transparent woods with diverse phosphorescence colors, and white emission, are successfully achieved. Furthermore, the RTP woods demonstrate dynamically tunable afterglow colors over time based on the varied phosphorescent lifetimes. Characterized by their high transparency and tunable colors, these natural wood-based RTP materials have great potentials for application in the fields of LED materials, optics, and building materials.

Visible-light-excited organic room temperature phosphorescence

Purely organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have evoked considerable attention owing to their fantastic optical properties and broad application prospects. However, most of the reported organic RTP materials can be only excited by UV light, leading to accelerated photoaging of organic phosphors and severe lesions of organisms under excitation. In contrast to UV light, visible light (380-780 nm) has much lower phototoxicity, deeper penetrability and easier accessibility, which make visible-light-excited RTP materials more favorable for practical uses, especially for life-related applications. Although it remains greatly challenging to construct visible-light-excited RTP materials, impressive progress has been made with the rapid development of this field. Herein, we systematically outline the significant progress achieved in visible-light-excited RTP materials, including the design and construction strategies, unique properties, underlying mechanisms and their vital applications. In the final section, we highlight the current challenges and research perspectives for suggesting future studies of visible-light-excited RTP materials.

Targeting Compact and Ordered Emitters by Supramolecular Dynamic Interactions for High-performance Organic Ambient Phosphorescence

Purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have received intense attention due to their fascinating optical properties and advanced optoelectronic applications. The promotion of intersystem crossing (ISC) and minimalization of nonradiative dissipation under ambient conditions are key prerequisites for realizing high-performance organic RTP; However, the ISC process is generally inefficient for organic fluorogens and the populated triplet excitons are always too susceptible to be well stabilized by conventional means. Particularly, organizing organic fluorophores into compact and ordered entities by supramolecular dynamic interactions has proven to be a newly-emerged strategy to boost the ISC process greatly and suppress the non-radiative relaxations immensely, facilitating the population and stabilization of triplet excitons to access high-performance organic RTP. Consequently, well-defined organic emitters enable robust RTP emission even in the solution state, thus greatly extending the applications. Here, this review is focused on a timely and brief introduction to recent progress in tailoring ordered high-performance RTP emitters by supramolecular dynamic interactions. Their typical preparation strategies, optoelectronic properties, and applications are thoroughly summarized. In the summary section, key challenges and perspectives of this field are highlighted to suggest potential directions for future study.

Enhancing the Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Performance by Salinization of Guests

Although the host-guest doped strategy effectively improves the phosphorescence performance of materials and greatly enriches the variety of materials, most of the guests are organic molecules with weak luminescence ability, which leads to the need for further improvement in the phosphorescence performance of doped materials. Herein, by salinization of organic molecules, the luminescence performance of the guests was effectively improved, thereby significantly enhancing the phosphorescence performance of the doped system. A compound 4-(naphthalen-2-yl)quinoline (QL) containing nitrogen atom was synthesized as initial guest, then QL was salted to obtain six organic salt guests containing anions BF4-, PF6-, CF3SO3-, N(CF3SO2)2-, ClO4-, and C4F9SO3-, respectively. Two doped systems were constructed using benzophenone and poly(methyl methacrylate) as the hosts. The phosphorescence quantum yield and phosphorescence lifetime of doped materials with QL as guest were only 4.1%/5.2% and 131 ms/141 ms, while those of doped materials with salinized molecules as guests were improved to 32-39% and 534-625 ms, respectively. The single-crystal structures and theoretical calculations indicated that anions can not only enhance the intermolecular interaction of guests but also increase the spin-orbit coupling constant. This work provides an effective strategy for improving the phosphorescence performance of doped materials.

Stepwise Stiffening Chromophore Strategy Realizes a Series of Ultralong Blue Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Materials

Ultralong room-temperature phosphorescent (URTP) materials have attracted wide attention in anti-counterfeiting, optoelectronic display, and bio-imaging due to their special optical properties. However, room-temperature blue phosphorescent materials are very scarce during applications because of the need to simultaneously populate and stabilize high-energy excited states. In this work, a stepwise stiffening chromophore strategy is proposed to suppress non-radiative jump by continuously reducing the internal spin of the chromophore, and successfully developing a series of blue phosphorescent materials. Phosphorescence lifetimes of more than 3 s are achieved, with the longest lifetime reaching 5.44 s and lasting more than 70 s in the naked eye. As far as is know, this is the best result that has been reported. By adjusting the chromophore conjugation, multicolor phosphorescences from cyan to green have been realized. In addition, these chromophores exhibit the same excellent optical properties in urea and polyvinyl alcohmance (PVA). Finally, these materials are successfully applied to luminescent displays.

Tilted-Plane Structure of the Energy of Finite Quantum Systems

The piecewise linearity condition on the total energy with respect to the total magnetization of finite quantum systems is derived using the infinite-separation-limit technique. This generalizes the well-known constancy condition, related to static correlation error, in approximate density functional theory. The magnetic analog of Koopmans' theorem in density functional theory is also derived. Moving to fractional electron count, the tilted-plane condition is derived, lifting certain assumptions in previous works. This generalization of the flat-plane condition characterizes the total energy surface of a finite system for all values of electron count N and magnetization M. This result is used in combination with tabulated spectroscopic data to show the flat-plane structure of the oxygen atom, among others. We find that derivative discontinuities with respect to electron count sometimes occur at noninteger values. A diverse set of tilted-plane structures is shown to occur in d-orbital subspaces, depending on chemical coordination. General occupancy-based total-energy expressions are demonstrated thereby to be necessarily dependent on the symmetry-imposed degeneracies.

High-efficiency color-tunable ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence from organic-inorganic metal halides via synergistic inter/intramolecular interactions

Materials exhibiting highly efficient, ultralong and multicolor-tunable room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are of practical importance for emerging applications. However, these are still very scarce and remain a formidable challenge. Herein, using precise structure design, several novel organic-inorganic metal-halide hybrids with efficient and ultralong RTP have been developed based on an identical organic cation (A). The original organic salt (ACl) exhibits red RTP properties with low phosphorescence efficiency. However, after embedding metals into the organic salt, the changed crystal structure endows the resultant metal-halide hybrids with excellent RTP properties. In particular, A2ZnCl4·H2O exhibits the highest RTP efficiency of up to 56.56% with a long lifetime of up to 159 ms. It is found that multiple inter/intramolecular interactions and the strong heavy-atom effect of the rigid metal-halide hybrids can suppress molecular motion and promote the ISC process, resulting in highly stable and localized triplet excitons followed by highly efficient RTP. More crucially, multicolor-tunable fluorescence and RTP achieved by tuning the metal and halogen endow these materials with wide application prospects in the fields of multilevel information encryption and dynamic optical data storage. The findings promote the development of phosphorescent metal-halide hybrids for potential high-tech applications.

Light and Heat-Driven Flexible Solid Supramolecular Polymer Displaying Phosphorescence and Reversible Photochromism

Herein, a type of light- and heat-driven flexible supramolecular polymer with reversibly long-lived phosphorescence and photochromism is constructed from acrylamide copolymers with 4-phenylpyridinium derivatives containing a cyano group (P-CN, P-oM, P-mM), sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBCD), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Compared to their parent solid polymers, these flexible supramolecules based on the non-covalent cross-linking of copolymers, SBCD, and PVA efficiently boost the phosphorescence lifetimes (723.0 ms for P-CN, 623.0 ms for P-oM, 945.8 ms for P-mM) through electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonds. The phosphorescence intensity/lifetime, showing excellent responsiveness to light and heat, sharply decreased after irradiation with a 275 nm flashlight or sunlight and gradually recovered through heating. This is accompanied by the occurrence and fading of visible photochromism, manifesting as dark green for P-CN and pink for P-oM and P-mM. These reversible photochromism and phosphorescence behaviors are mainly attributed to the generation and disappearance of organic radicals in the 4-phenylpyridinium derivatives with a cyano group, which can guide tunable luminescence and photochromism.

Room-temperature phosphorescence from organic materials in aqueous media

In recent years, organic materials with room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) features have gained significant attention due to their wide applications in the fields of bioimaging, light-harvesting materials, encryption technology, etc. Although several examples of organic RTP materials in the crystalline state and polymer-based systems have been reported in the last decade or so, achieving organic RTP in the solution phase, particularly in the aqueous phase has remained a challenging task. Herein in this review, we summarize the progress in this direction by highlighting design strategies based on supramolecular scaffolding and host-guest complexation and the applications of such aqueous organic RTP materials in bioimaging, sensing, etc.

Supramolecular assembly activated single-molecule phosphorescence resonance energy transfer for near-infrared targeted cell imaging

Pure organic phosphorescence resonance energy transfer is a research hotspot. Herein, a single-molecule phosphorescence resonance energy transfer system with a large Stokes shift of 367 nm and near-infrared emission is constructed by guest molecule alkyl-bridged methoxy-tetraphenylethylene-phenylpyridines derivative, cucurbit[n]uril (n = 7, 8) and β-cyclodextrin modified hyaluronic acid. The high binding affinity of cucurbituril to guest molecules in various stoichiometric ratios not only regulates the topological morphology of supramolecular assembly but also induces different phosphorescence emissions. Varying from the spherical nanoparticles and nanorods for binary assemblies, three-dimensional nanoplate is obtained by the ternary co-assembly of guest with cucurbit[7]uril/cucurbit[8]uril, accompanying enhanced phosphorescence at 540 nm. Uncommonly, the secondary assembly of β-cyclodextrin modified hyaluronic acid and ternary assembly activates a single intramolecular phosphorescence resonance energy transfer process derived from phenyl pyridines unit to methoxy-tetraphenylethylene function group, enabling a near-infrared delayed fluorescence at 700 nm, which ultimately applied to mitochondrial targeted imaging for cancer cells.

Achieving Bright and Long-Lived Aqueous Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Carbon Nitrogen Dots Through In Situ Host-Guest Binding

The development of bright and long-lived aqueous room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials holds paramount importance in broadening the application scope of RTP material system. However, the conventional RTP materials usually exhibit low efficiency and short lifetime in aqueous solution. Herein, an in situ host-guest strategy is proposed to achieve cyanuric acid (CA)-derived phosphorescent carbon nitrogen dots (CNDs) composite (CNDs@CA) that demonstrates a significant enhancement of both quantum yield (QY) and lifetime mediated by water. Detailed investigations reveal that the robust hydrogen bonding networks between CNDs@CA and water effectively stabilize triplet excitons and suppress nonradiative decays, as well as facilitate efficient energy transfer from CA to CNDs, thereby prolonging the lifetime and enhancing the efficiency of RTP. The phosphorescent QY and lifetime of CNDs@CA can be increased to 26.89% (3.9-fold increase) and 951.25 ms (5.5-fold increase), respectively, with the incorporation of 50 wt% water under ambient conditions. Even in fully aqueous environments (with up to 400 wt% water added), CNDs@CA exhibits persistent water-boosted RTP properties, demonstrating exceptional stability. The robust water-boosted RTP property of CNDs@CA in aqueous solutions presents significant potential for high signal-to-noise ratio afterglow bioimaging as well as advanced information encryption.

Narrowband room temperature phosphorescence of closed-loop molecules through the multiple resonance effect

Luminescent materials with narrowband emission show great potential for diverse applications in optoelectronics. Purely organic phosphors with room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have made significant success in rationally manipulating quantum efficiency, lifetimes, and colour gamut in the past years, but there is limited attention on the purity of the RTP colours. Herein we report a series of closed-loop molecules with narrowband phosphorescence by multiple resonance effect, which significantly improves the colour purity of RTP. Phosphors show narrowband phosphorescence with full width at half maxima (FWHM) of 30 nm after doping into a rigid benzophenone matrix under ambient conditions, of which the RTP efficiency reaches 51.8%. At 77 K, the FWHM of phosphorescence is only 11 nm. Meanwhile, the colour of narrowband RTP can be tuned from sky blue to green with the modification of methyl groups. Additionally, the potential applications in X-ray imaging and display are demonstrated. This work not only outlines a design principle for developing narrowband RTP materials but also makes a major step forward extending the potential applications of narrowband luminescent materials in optoelectronics.

Urea-formaldehyde resin room temperature phosphorescent material with ultra-long afterglow and adjustable phosphorescence performance

Organic room-temperature phosphorescence materials have attracted extensive attention, but their development is limited by the stability and processibility. Herein, based on the on-line derivatization strategy, we report the urea-formaldehyde room-temperature phosphorescence materials which are constructed by polycondensation of aromatic diamines with urea and formaldehyde. Excitingly, urea-formaldehyde room-temperature phosphorescence materials achieve phosphor lifetime up to 3326 ms. There may be two ways to enhance phosphorescence performance, one is that the polycondensation of aromatic diamine with urea and formaldehyde promotes spin-orbit coupling, and another is that the imidazole derivatives derived from the condensation of aromatic o-diamine with formaldehyde maintains low levels of energy level difference and spin-orbit coupling, thus achieving ultra-long afterglow. Surprisingly, urea-formaldehyde room-temperature phosphorescence materials exhibit tunable phosphorescence emission in electrostatic field. Accordingly, 1,4-phenylenediamine, urea, and formaldehyde are copolymerized and self-assembled into phosphorescence microspheres with different electrostatic potential strengths. By mixing 1 wt% 1,4-phenylenediamine polycondensation microspheres with 1,4-phenylenediamine free microspheres, phosphor lifetime of the composite could be regulated from 27 ms to 123 ms. Moreover, vulcanization process enables precise shaping of urea-formaldehyde room-temperature phosphorescence materials. This work not only demonstrates that urea-formaldehyde room-temperature phosphorescence materials are promising candidates for organic phosphors, but also exhibits the phenomenon of electrostatically regulated phosphorescence.

Tailoring raloxifene into single-component molecular crystals possessing multilevel stimuli-responsive room-temperature phosphorescence

Simultaneously achieving room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and multiple-stimuli responsiveness in a single-component system is of significance but remains challenging. Crystallization has been recognized to be a workable strategy to fulfill the above task. However, how the molecular packing mode affects the intersystem crossing and RTP lifetime concurrently remains unclear so far. Herein, four economic small-molecular compounds, analogues of the famous drug raloxifene (RALO), are facilely synthesized and further explored as neat single-component and stimuli-responsive RTP emitters via crystallization engineering. Thanks to their simple structures and high ease to crystallize, these raloxifene analogues function as models to clarify the important role of molecular packing in the RTP and stimuli-responsiveness properties. Thorough combination of the single-crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculations clearly manifests that the tight antiparallel molecular packing mode is the key point to their RTP behaviors. Interestingly, harnessing the controllable and reversible phase transitions of the two polymorphs of RALO-OAc driven by mechanical force, solvent vapor, and heat, a single-component multilevel stimuli-responsive platform with tunable emission color is established and further exploited for optical information encryption. This work would shed light on the rational design of multi-stimuli responsive RTP systems based on single-component organics.

Finely manipulating room temperature phosphorescence by dynamic lanthanide coordination toward multi-level information security

Room temperature phosphorescence materials have garnered significant attention due to their unique optical properties and promising applications. However, it remains a great challenge to finely manipulate phosphorescent properties to achieve desirable phosphorescent performance on demand. Here, we show a feasible strategy to finely manipulate organic phosphorescent performance by introducing dynamic lanthanide coordination. The organic phosphors of terpyridine phenylboronic acids possessing excellent coordination ability are covalently embedded into a polyvinyl alcohol matrix, leading to ultralong organic room temperature phosphorescence with a lifetime of up to 0.629 s. Notably, such phosphorescent performance, including intensity and lifetime, can be well controlled by varying the lanthanide dopant. Relying on the excellent modulable performance of these lanthanide-manipulated phosphorescence films, multi-level information encryption including attacker-misleading and spatial-time-resolved applications is successfully demonstrated with greatly improved security level. This work opens an avenue for finely manipulating phosphorescent properties to meet versatile uses in optical applications.

3-Ethynyltriimidazo[1,2-a:1',2'-c:1″,2″-e][1,3,5]triazine Dual Short- and Long-Lived Emissions with Crystallization-Enhanced Feature: Role of Hydrogen Bonds and π-π Interactions

Organic room temperature phosphorescent (ORTP) materials with stimuli-responsive, multicomponent emissive behaviour are extremely desirable for various applications. The derivative of cyclic triimidazole (TT) functionalized with an ethynyl group, TT-CCH, is isolated and investigated. The compound possesses crystallization-enhanced emission (CEE) comprising dual fluorescence and dual phosphorescence of both molecular and supramolecular origin with aggregation-induced components highly sensitive to grinding. The mechanisms involved in the emissions have been disclosed thanks to combined structural, spectroscopic and computational investigations. In particular, strong CH⋯N hydrogen bonds are deemed responsible, for the first time in the TT family, together with frequently observed π⋯π stacking interactions, for the aggregated fluorescence and phosphorescence.

Rapid room-temperature phosphorescence chiral recognition of natural amino acids

Chiral recognition of amino acids is very important in both chemical and life sciences. Although chiral recognition with luminescence has many advantages such as being inexpensive, it is usually slow and lacks generality as the recognition module relies on structural complementarity. Here, we show that one single molecular-solid sensor, L-phenylalanine derived benzamide, can manifest the structural difference between the natural, left-handed amino acid and its right-handed counterpart via the difference of room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) irrespective of the specific chemical structure. To realize rapid and reliable sensing, the doped samples are obtained as nanocrystals from evaporation of the tetrahydrofuran solutions, which allows for efficient triplet-triplet energy transfer to the chiral analytes generated in situ from chiral amino acids. The results show that L-analytes induce strong RTP, whereas the unnatural D-analytes produce barely any afterglow. The method expands the scope of luminescence chiral sensing by lessening the requirement for specific molecular structures.

Halogen-bonding boosting the high performance X-ray imaging of organic scintillators

Organic scintillators with efficient X-ray excited luminescence are essential for medical diagnostics and security screening. However, achieving excellent organic scintillation materials is challenging due to low X-ray absorption coefficients and inferior radioluminescence (RL) intensity. Herein, supramolecular interactions are incorporated, particularly halogen bonding, into organic scintillators to enhance their radioluminescence properties. By introducing heavy atoms (X = Cl, Br, I) into 9,10-bis(4-pyridyl)anthracene (BPA), the formation of halogen bonding (BPA-X) enhances their X-ray absorption coefficient and restricts the molecular vibration and rotation, which boosts their RL intensity. The RL intensity of BPA-Cl and BPA-Br fluorochromes increased by over 2 and 6.3 times compared to BPA, respectively. Especially, BPA-Br exhibits an ultrafast decay time of 8.25 ns and low detection limits of 25.95 ± 2.49 nGy s-1. The flexible film constructed with BPA-Br exhibited excellent X-ray imaging capabilities. Furthermore, this approach is also applicable to organic phosphors. The formation of halogen bonding in bromophenyl-methylpyridinium iodide (PYI) led to a fourfold increase in RL intensity compared to bromophenyl-methyl-pyridinium (PY). It suggests that halogen bonding serves as a promising and effective molecular design strategy for the development of high-performance organic scintillator materials, presenting new opportunities for their applications in radiology and security screening.

Recent progress in ion-regulated organic room-temperature phosphorescence

Organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have attracted considerable attention for their extended afterglow at ambient conditions, eco-friendliness, and wide-ranging applications in bio-imaging, data storage, security inks, and emergency illumination. Significant advancements have been achieved in recent years in developing highly efficient RTP materials by manipulating the intermolecular interactions. In this perspective, we have summarized recent advances in ion-regulated organic RTP materials based on the roles and interactions of ions, including the ion-π interactions, electrostatic interactions, and coordinate interactions. Subsequently, the current challenges and prospects of utilizing ionic interactions for inducing and modulating the phosphorescent properties are presented. It is anticipated that this perspective will provide basic guidelines for fabricating novel ionic RTP materials and further extend their application potential.

ε-Polylysine organic ultra-long room-temperature phosphorescent materials based on phosphorescent molecule doping

Achieving long-lived room-temperature phosphorescence from pure organic amorphous polymers is attractive, and afterglow materials with colour-tunable and multiple-stimuli-responsive afterglow are particularly important, but only few materials with these characteristics have been reported so far. Herein, a facile and general method is reported to construct a series of ε-polylysine (ε-PL)-based afterglow materials with tunable colour (from blue to red) and long life. By doping guest molecules into ε-PL to obtain composite materials, the polymer matrix provides a rigid environment for luminescent groups, resulting in amorphous polymers with different RTPs. In this system, the materials even have impressive humidity-stimulated responses, and the phosphorescence emission exhibits excitation-dependent and time-dependent properties. The humidity-responsive afterglow is caused by the destruction of hydrogen bonds and quenching of triplet excitons. The time-dependent afterglow should stem from the formation of diversified RTP emissive species with comparable but different lifetimes. 9,10-diaminophene has Ex-De properties in the film doping state. With the change of excitation wavelength (254 nm to 365 nm), the emission wavelength shifts from 461 nm to 530 nm, accompanied by the change of emission colour from blue to green. In addition, the phosphorescence life of the film is the longest, up to 2504.7 ms, and the afterglow lasts up to 15 s, which is conducive to its applications in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Photo-Controllable Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescence: State of the Art

In this concept, we showcase the upsurge in the studies of dynamic ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials containing inorganic and/or organic components as versatile photo-responsive platforms. The goal is to provide a comprehensive analysis of photo-controllable RTP, and meanwhile delve into the underlying RTP properties of various classes of photochromic materials including metal-organic complexes, organic-inorganic co-crystals, purely organic small molecules and organic polymers. In particular, the design principles governing the integration of the photochromic and RTP moieties within a single material system, and the tuning of dynamic RTP in response to light are emphasized. As such, this concept sheds light on the challenges and opportunities of using these tunable RTP materials for potential applications in optoelectronics, particularly highlighting their use of reversible information encryption, erasable light printing and rewritable smart paper.

Al8 Cluster-Based Metal Halide Frameworks: Balancing Singlet-Triplet Excited States to Achieve White Light and Multicolor Luminescence

Luminescent metal clusters have attracted great interest in current research; however, the design synthesis of Al clusters with color-tunable luminescence remains challenging. Herein, an [Al8 (OH)8 (NA)16 ] (Al8 , HNA = nicotinic acid) molecular cluster with dual luminescence properties of fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is synthesized by choosing HNA ligand as phosphor. Its prompt photoluminescence (PL) spectrum exhibits approximately white light emission at room temperature. Considering that halogen atoms can be used to regulate the RTP property by balancing the singlet and triplet excitons, different CdX2 (X- = Cl- , Br- , I- ) are introduced into the reactive system of the Al8 cluster, and three new Al8 cluster-based metal-organic frameworks, {[Al8 Cd3 Cl5 (OH)8 (NA)17 H2 O]·2HNA}n (CdCl2 -Al8 ), {[Al8 Cd4 Br7 (OH)8 (NA)16 CH3 CN]·NA·HNA}n (CdBr2 -Al8 ) and {[Al8 Cd8 I16 (OH)8 (NA)16 ]}n (CdI2 -Al8 ) are successfully obtained. They realize the color tunability from blue to yellow at room temperature. The origination of fluorescence and phosphorescence has also been illustrated by structure-property analysis and theoretical calculation. This work provides new insights into the design of multicolor luminescent metal cluster-based materials and develops advanced photo-functional materials for multicolor display, anti-counterfeiting, and encryption applications.

Modulation of Deep-Red to Near-Infrared Room-Temperature Charge-Transfer Phosphorescence of Crystalline "Pyrene Box" Cages by Coupled Ion/Guest Structural Self-Assembly

Organic cocrystals obtained from multicomponent self-assembly have garnered considerable attention due to their distinct phosphorescence properties and broad applications. Yet, there have been limited reports on cocrystal systems that showcase efficient deep-red to near-infrared (NIR) charge-transfer (CT) phosphorescence. Furthermore, effective strategies to modulate the emission pathways of both fluorescence and phosphorescence remain underexplored. In this work, we dedicated our work to four distinct self-assembled cocrystals called "pyrene box" cages using 1,3,6,8-pyrenetetrasulfonate anions (PTS4-), 4-iodoaniline (1), guanidinium (G+), diaminoguanidinium (A2G+), and hydrated K+ countercations. The binding of such cations to PTS4- platforms adaptively modulates their supramolecular stacking self-assembly with guest molecules 1, allowing to steer the fluorescence and phosphorescence pathways. Notably, the confinement of guest molecule 1 within "pyrene box" PTSK{1} and PTSG{1} cages leads to an efficient deep-red to NIR CT phosphorescence emission. The addition of fuming gases like triethylamine and HCl allows reversible pH modulations of guest binding, which in turn induce a reversible transition of the "pyrene box" cage between fluorescence and phosphorescence states. This capability was further illustrated through a proof-of-concept demonstration in shrimp freshness detection. Our findings not only lay a foundation for future supramolecular designs leveraging weak intermolecular host-guest interactions to engineer excited states in interacting chromophores but also broaden the prospective applications of room-temperature phosphorescence materials in food safety detection.

Cucurbit[8]uril Confinement-Based Secondary Coassembly for High-Efficiency Phosphorescence Energy Transfer Behavior

Aqueous supramolecular long-lived near-infrared (NIR) material is highly attractive but still remains great challenge. Herein, we report cucurbit[8]uril confinement-based secondary coassembly for achieving NIR phosphorescence energy transfer in water, which is fabricated from dicationic dodecyl-chain-bridged 4-(4-bromophenyl)-pyridine derivative (G), cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), and polyelectrolyte poly(4-styrene-sulfonic sodium) (PSS) via the hierarchical confinement strategy. As compared to the dumbbell-shaped G, the formation of unprecedented linear polypseudorotaxane G⊂CB[8] with nanofiber morphology engenders an emerging phosphorescent emission at 510 nm due to the macrocyclic confinement effect. Moreover, benefiting from the following secondary assembly confinement, such tight polypseudorotaxane G⊂CB[8] can further assemble with anionic polyelectrolyte PSS to yield uniform spherical nanoparticle, thereby significantly strengthening phosphorescence performance with an extended lifetime (i.e., 2.39 ms, c.f., 45.0 μs). Subsequently, the organic dye Rhodamine 800 serving as energy acceptor can be slightly doped into the polyelectrolyte assembly, which enables the occurrence of efficient phosphorescence energy transfer process with efficiency up to 80.1% at a high donor/acceptor ratio, and concurrently endows the final system with red-shifted and long-lived NIR emission (710 nm). Ultimately, the as-prepared assembly is successfully exploited as versatile imaging agent for NIR window labeling and detecting in living cells.

Based on FRET to construct color-tunable ultralong lifetime room temperature phosphorescent carbon dots in aqueous solution

Room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) Carbon Dots have been capturing increasing attention in recent years, while building a general method to adjust the emission color of RTP carbon dots is still a big challenge. Herein we report a simple method that combine the carbon nanodots and dyes (R6G and DCF) in SiO2 nanosphere to get a series of multicolor RTP nanodots (CD@SiO2@dye) with long lifetime in aqueous solution. Leverage on chitosan quaternary ammonium as matrix and diethylenetriamine as N-doping resource to form a cross-linked skeleton as a luminescent center (namely CD), and a rigid network is formed by silica encapsulation (CD@SiO2) to restrict the non-radiative transition process to generate the phosphorescence. The CD-based composites, with 1.10 s green (503 nm) phosphorescence emission, serve as activator to stimulate the corresponding luminescence of organic dyes. Then, based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process from CDs (as donor) to organic dyes (as acceptor) under UV excitation, the CD@SiO2@R6G emit ultra-long lifetime (1.13 s) orange-yellow (570 nm) afterglow, and CD@SiO2@DCF emit ultra-long lifetime (1.20 s) yellow-green afterglow (530 nm). Furthermore, it also achieves RTP colors control when the ratio of CDs and the dyes changes, the ratio of green emission and dye's emission activated by CDs will gradually change as well. These kinds of materials keep the inherent advantages of low toxicity and luminous stability, and achieve adjustable RTP color in aqueous solution. Our research provides a strategy to synthesize water-soluble long-life RTP CDs with adjustable color and lifetime.

Luminescent Mechanism and Anti-Counterfeiting Application of Hydrophilic, Undoped Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Silicon Nanocrystals

Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) have attracted extensive attention in many advanced applications due to silicon's high natural abundance, low toxicity, and impressive optical properties. However, these applications are mainly focused on fluorescent SiNCs, little attention is paid to SiNCs with room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and their relative applications, especially water-dispersed ones. Herein, this work presents water-dispersible RTP SiNCs (UA-SiNCs) and their optical applications. The UA-SiNCs with a uniform particle size of 2.8 nm are prepared by thermal hydrosilylation between hydrogen-terminated SiNCs (H-SiNCs) and 10-undecenoic acid (UA). Interestingly, the resultant UA-SiNCs can exhibit tunable long-lived RTP with an average lifetime of 0.85 s. The RTP feature of the UA-SiNCs is confirmed to the n-π* transitions of their surface C═O groups. Subsequently, new dual-modal emissive UA-SiNCs-based ink is fabricated by blending with sodium alginate (SA) as the binder. The customized anticounterfeiting labels are also prepared on cellulosic substrates by screen-printing technique. As expected, UA-SiNCs/SA ink exhibits excellent practicability in anticounterfeiting applications. These findings will trigger the rapid development of RTP SiNCs, envisioning enormous potential in future advanced applications such as high-level anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and so forth.

Molecularly Engineered Room-Temperature Phosphorescence for Biomedical Application: From the Visible toward Second Near-Infrared Window

Phosphorescence, characterized by luminescent lifetimes significantly longer than that of biological autofluorescence under ambient environment, is of great value for biomedical applications. Academic evidence of fluorescence imaging indicates that virtually all imaging metrics (sensitivity, resolution, and penetration depths) are improved when progressing into longer wavelength regions, especially the recently reported second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) window. Although the emission wavelength of probes does matter, it is not clear whether the guideline of "the longer the wavelength, the better the imaging effect" is still suitable for developing phosphorescent probes. For tissue-specific bioimaging, long-lived probes, even if they emit visible phosphorescence, enable accurate visualization of large deep tissues. For studies dealing with bioimaging of tiny biological architectures or dynamic physiopathological activities, the prerequisite is rigorous planning of long-wavelength phosphorescence, being aware of the cooperative contribution of long wavelengths and long lifetimes for improving the spatiotemporal resolution, penetration depth, and sensitivity of bioimaging. In this Review, emerging molecular engineering methods of room-temperature phosphorescence are discussed through the lens of photophysical mechanisms. We highlight the roles of phosphorescence with emission from visible to NIR-II windows toward bioapplications. To appreciate such advances, challenges and prospects in rapidly growing studies of room-temperature phosphorescence are described.

Polymerization Based on Modified β-Cyclodextrin Achieves Efficient Phosphorescence Energy Transfer for Anti-Counterfeiting

Supramolecular polymerization can not only activate guest phosphorescence, but also promote phosphorescence Förster resonance energy transfer and induce effective delayed fluorescence. Herein, the solid supramolecular assemblies of ternary copolymers based on acrylamide, modified β-cyclodextrin (CD), and carbazole (CZ) are reported. After doping with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and dyes, a NIR luminescence supramolecular composite with a lifetime of 1.07 s, an energy transfer efficiency of up to 97.4% is achieved through tandem phosphorescence energy transfer. The ternary copolymers can realize macrocyclic enrichment of dyes in comparison to CZ and acrylamide copolymers without CD, which can facilitate energy transfer between triplet and singlet with a high donor-acceptor ratio. Additionally, the flexible polymeric films exhibit regulable lifetime, tunable luminescence color, and repeatable switchable afterglow by adjusting the excitation wavelength, donor-acceptor ratio, and wet/dry stimuli. The luminescence materials are successfully applied to information encryption and anti-counterfeiting.

Phosphorescence resonance energy transfer from purely organic supramolecular assembly

Phosphorescence energy transfer systems have been applied in encryption, biomedical imaging and chemical sensing. These systems exhibit ultra-large Stokes shifts, high quantum yields and are colour-tuneable with long-wavelength afterglow fluorescence (particularly in the near-infrared) under ambient conditions. This review discusses triplet-to-singlet PRET or triplet-to-singlet-to-singlet cascaded PRET systems based on macrocyclic or assembly-confined purely organic phosphorescence introducing the critical toles of supramolecular noncovalent interactions in the process. These interactions promote intersystem crossing, restricting the motion of phosphors, minimizing non-radiative decay and organizing donor-acceptor pairs in close proximity. We discuss the applications of these systems and focus on the challenges ahead in facilitating their further development.

Revisiting organic charge-transfer cocrystals for wide-range tunable, ambient phosphorescence

Simple and efficient designs that enable a wide range of phosphorescence emission in organic materials have ignited scientific interest across diverse fields. One particularly promising approach is the cocrystallization strategy, where organic cocrystals are ingeniously formed through relatively weaker and dynamic non-covalent interactions. In our present study, we push the boundaries further by extending this cocrystal strategy to incorporate donor-acceptor components, stabilized by various halogen bonding interactions. This non-covalent complexation triggers ambient, charge-transfer phosphorescence (3CT), which can be precisely tuned across a broad spectrum by a modular selection of components with distinct electronic characteristics. At the core of our investigation lies the electron-deficient phosphor, pyromellitic diimide, which, upon complexation with different donors based on their electron-donating strength, manifests a striking array of phosphorescence emission from CT triplet states, spanning from green to yellow to reddish orange accompanied by noteworthy quantum yields. Through a systematic exploration of the electronic properties using spectroscopic studies and molecular organization through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, we decisively establish the molecular origin of the observed phosphorescence. Notably, our work presents, for the first time, an elegant demonstration of tunable 3CT phosphorescence emission in intermolecular donor-acceptor systems, highlighting their immense significance in the quest for efficient organic phosphors.

Water-soluble organic macrocycles based on dye chromophores and their applications

Traditional water-soluble organic macrocyclic receptors generally lack photofunctionality, thus monitoring the drug delivery and the phototheranostic applications of these host-guest macrocyclic systems has been greatly restricted. To address this issue, incorporating π-conjugated dye chromophores as building blocks into macrocyclic molecules is a straightforward and promising strategy. This approach not only imparts intrinsic optical features to the macrocycles themselves but also enhances the host-guest binding ability due to the large planar structures of the dyes. In this feature article, we focus on recent advances in water-soluble macrocyclic compounds based on organic dye chromophores, such as naphthalimide (NDI), perylene diimides (PDI), azobenzene (azo), tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and anthracene, and provide an overview of their various applications including molecular recognition, drug release, biological imaging, photothermal therapy, etc. We hope that this article could be helpful and instructive for the design of water-soluble dye-based macrocycles and the further development of their biomedical applications, particularly in combination with drug therapy and phototheranostics.

Selective Fluorescent Sensing for Iron in Aqueous Solution by A Novel Functionalized Pillar[5]arene

Iron ion is one of the most physiologically important elements in metabolic processes, indispensable for all living systems. Since its excess can lead to severe diseases, new approaches for its monitoring in water samples are urgently needed to meet requirements. Here, we firstly report a novel and universal route for the synthesis of a series of pillar[n]arene derivates containing one benzoquinone unit by photocatalysis. With this in hand, an anthracene - appended water - soluble pillar[5]arene (H) with excellent fluorescence sensing potency was prepared. H enabled the ultrasensitive detection of iron ions in aqueous solution with limits of detection of 10-8  M. Over a wide range of metal ions, H exhibited specific selectivity toward Fe3+ . More importantly, H could still properly operate in a simulated sewage sample, coexisting with multiple interference ions.

Triazine pyridinium derivative supramolecular cascade assembly extended FRET for two-photon NIR targeted cell imaging

A triazine pyridinium derivative (TAZpy) was encapsulated into the cavity of a cucurbit[7]uril and further assembled with sulfonatocalix[4]-arene, hyaluronic acid and commercial dyes, which not only achieved fluorescence cascade enhancement and an effective FRET process based on macrocyclic confinement, but was also applied in two-photon NIR targeted cell imaging.

Phosphorescence enhancement of pyridinium macrocycles by poly(vinylalcohol)

A phosphorescence enhancement of pyridinium macrocycle/monomer phosphors is realized with up to 14.7-fold prolonging of the phosphorescence lifetimes and visible afterglow by doping into a poly(vinylalcohol) (PVA) matrix. The abundant hydrogen-bonding interactions and electrostatic interactions between the phosphors and the PVA suppressed the nonradiative decay processes, slowed down the radiative decay and nonradiative decay of triplet states, and therefore promoted the long-lived RTP.

Narrowband Organic Afterglow via Phosphorescence Förster Resonance Energy Transfer for Multifunctional Applications

Achieving multicolor organic afterglow materials with narrowband emission and high color purity is important in various optoelectronic fields but remains a great challenge. Here, an efficient strategy is presented to obtain narrowband organic afterglow materials via Förster resonance energy transfer from long-lived phosphorescence donors to narrowband fluorescence acceptors in a polyvinyl alcohol matrix. The resulting materials exhibit narrowband emission with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) as small as 23 nm and the longest lifetime of 721.22 ms. Meanwhile, by pairing the appropriate donors and acceptors, multicolor and high color purity afterglow ranging from green to red with the maximum photoluminescence quantum yield of 67.1% are achieved. Moreover, given their long luminescence lifetime, high color purity, and flexibility, the potential applications are demonstrated in high-resolution afterglow displays and dynamic and quick information identification in low-light conditions. This work provides a facile approach for developing multicolor and narrowband afterglow materials as well as expands the features of organic afterglow.

Synthesis of Naphthalimide Derivatives and Their Luminescence upon Complexation with Cucurbit[n]uril Hosts

A series of naphthalimide derivatives are synthesized and their binding behavior upon complexation with cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]s) has been investigated. With a heavy atom (bromine) on the naphthalimide core, 4-bromo-1,8-naphthalimide derivatives 1-4 show short room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) lifetimes with low quantum yields. Their RTP properties are significantly enhanced in the presence of CB[8] or CB[10] both in aqueous solution and solid state owing to the efficient suppression of nonradiative decay and isolation of quenching factors by the rigid cavity of CB[n]. Without the bromine atom, 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives 5 and 6 show strong excimer emission upon complexation with CB[10] accompanied by fluorescence transition from blue to cyan. The fluorescence colors of 4-(dimethylamino)-1,8-naphthalimide derivatives 7 and 8 change from blue to white to yellow with the addition of CB[n]. This host-guest complexation strategy to modulate the luminescence of the luminophore would further broaden the application of luminescent materials.

Conformationally confined three-armed supramolecular folding for boosting near-infrared biological imaging

Herein, a triphenylamine derivative (TP-3PY) possessing 4-(4-bromophenyl)pyridine (PY) as an electron-accepting group and tris[p-(4-pyridylvinyl)phenyl]amine (TPA) with large two-photon absorption cross-sections as an electron-donating group was obtained, and showed intense absorption in the visible light region (λmax = 509 nm) and weak near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence emission at 750 nm. After complexation with cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), TP-3PY showed bright NIR fluorescence emission at 727 nm and phosphorescence emission at 800 nm. When the supramolecular assembly (TP-3PY⊂CB[8]) further interacted with dodecyl-modified sulfonatocalix[4]arene (SC4AD), the fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions were further enhanced at 710 and 734 nm, respectively. However, only the fluorescence emission of TP-3PY was enhanced in the presence of cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) and SC4AD. More interestingly, the photoluminescence of TP-3PY⊂CB[8]@SC4AD and TP-3PY⊂CB[7]@SC4AD assemblies could be excited by both visible (510 nm) and NIR light (930 nm). Finally, these ternary supramolecular assemblies with bright NIR light emission were applied to lysosome imaging of tumor cells and real-time biological imaging of mice.

Mechanism landscape in pyrylium induced organic afterglow systems

Manipulation of excited states and their dynamics represents a central topic in luminescence systems. We report an unexpected emergence of a high-performance organic afterglow in pyrylium induced photopolymerization systems, as well as the establishment of the mechanism landscape of the afterglow systems as a function of monomer types. In the case of methyl methacrylate, after pyrylium-catalyzed photopolymerization, the obtained materials exhibit a TADF-type organic afterglow with an afterglow efficiency of 70.4%. By using heavy-atom-containing methacrylate, the external heavy atom effect speeds up phosphorescence decay and switches on room-temperature phosphorescence in pyrylium-polymer systems. When 9-vinylcarbazole is used, the resultant materials display organic long persistent luminescence with hour-long durations and emission maxima around 650 nm. The intriguing mechanism landscape reflects the delicate balance of multiple photophysical processes in the pyrylium induced organic afterglow systems, which has been rarely explored in the reported studies.

Macrocycle γ-Cyclodextrin Confined Polymeric Chromophore Ultralong Phosphorescence Energy Transfer

A multicolor persistent luminescence solid polymeric system based on macrocycle-confined phosphorescence energy transfer was constructed with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) and poly(vinyl alcohol) modified by triphenylene derivative (TP-PVA). Attributed to the fact that macrocycles effectively suppress the aggregation of guests and form a rigid environment via coassembling with the polymer, the phosphorescence lifetime of the yielded polymeric films is prolonged from 0.22 to 5.84 s, accompanied by a visible afterglow of more than 1 min. Furthermore, upon doping with several commercial dyes, full-color afterglow emissions with a duration of more than 50 s are realized through phosphorescence energy transfer. Notably, the multicolor-emitting-afterglow materials are successfully exploited for noctilucent lighting and anticounterfeiting ink.

The host-guest inclusion driven by host-stabilized charge transfer for construction of sequentially red-shifted mechanochromic system

Developing more extensive methods to understand the underlying structure-property relationship of mechanochromic luminescent molecules is demanding but remains challenging. Herein, the effect of host-guest interaction on the mechanochromic properties of organic molecules is illustrated. A series of pyridinium-functionalized triphenylamine derivatives show bathochromic-shifted emission upon mechanical stimulation. These derivatives bind to cucurbit[8]uril to form homoternary host-guest inclusion complexes through host-stabilized intermolecular charge transfer interactions. Remarkably, the homoternary complexes exhibit longer emission than that of free guests in the solid state (even longer than ground guests), and a further bathochromic-shifted emission is observed upon grinding. Additionally, a heteroternary complex constructed through the encapsulation of pyrene (donor) and pyridinium (acceptor) guest pair in cucurbit[8]uril also displays the mechanochromic luminescent property. This work not only discloses the effect of host-guest inclusion on the mechanochromic property of organic molecules, but also provides a principle and a facile way to design the sequentially red-shifted mechanochromic materials.

Construction of room temperature phosphorescent materials with ultralong lifetime by in-situ derivation strategy

Although room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have been widely investigated, it is still a great challenge to improve the performance of RTP materials by promoting triplet exciton generation and stabilization. In this study, an in-situ derivation strategy was proposed to construct efficient RTP materials by in-situ deriving guest molecules and forming a rigid matrix during co-pyrolysis of guest molecules and urea. Characterizations and theoretical calculations revealed that the generated derivatives were beneficial for promoting intersystem crossing (ISC) to produce more triplet excitons, while rigid matrix could effectively suppress the non-radiative transition of triplet excitons. Thus, the in-situ derivation strategy was concluded to simultaneously promote the generation and stabilization of triplet excitons. With this method, the ultralong lifetime of RTP materials could reach up to 5.33 s and polychromatic RTP materials were easily achieved. High-definition and robust visualization of latent fingerprints utilizing ultrabright aggregation-induced emission of iridium developer

Creation of AIEgens with high brightness is compactly related to acquiring optimum AIE capabilities and still faces challenges. This study proposes an ingenious structurally regulative approach for preparing ultrabright AIEgens, taking iridium complexes as the model. The incremental rotational activity of substituents obtained by fine adjustment of the stereoscopic configuration efficaciously activates the AIE of iridium complexes and synchronously imparts high-brightness luminescence. Subsequently, benefitting from the ultrabright AIE, high-resolution visualization of latent fingerprints (LFPs) is achieved on diverse substrates by transient immersion in a solution of the AIE-active iridium complex (Ir3) for 60 s. The LFPs stained by Ir3 are integral and distinct enough to possess level 1-3 detail features, which allow precisely realizing personal identification. The LFP photograph emerges inconspicuous attenuation of contrast when aged under ambient light for 10 days and then being continuously irradiated with high-power ultraviolet light for 1 h, reflecting extraordinary aging resistance. Notably, the ultrabright AIE of Ir3 with room-temperature phosphorescence feature successfully achieves enhanced visualization of local fingerprint details with ultrahigh contrast. This LFP visualization protocol based on the ultrabright AIEgens is practical and provides a reliable solution for forensic investigations in actual scenarios.

Respiration-Responsive Colorful Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Materials and Assembly-Induced Phosphorescence Enhancement Strategies

It is still very challenging to obtain colorful and long-afterglow room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials from pure organic polymers. Herein, it is found that chitosan (CS), a natural polymer, not only has its own RTP, but also reacts with different phosphorescent molecules to obtain a multicolor, long-afterglow RTP material. CS can emit RTP with a lifetime of 48 ms. In addition, CS is rich in amino groups, and grafting different phosphorescent molecules onto CS by an amidation reaction can modulate it to emit different colors of phosphorescence and obtain a series of colorful CS derivatives. The obtained polymer films also have ultra-long RTP due to the good film-forming ability. In addition, one of the CS derivatives selected with α-cyclodextrin is used to construct RTP materials with lifetimes of up to seconds. The host-guest interactions are used to suppress nonradiative relaxation and build crystalline domains, thus synergistically enhancing the RTP. Interestingly, the RTP properties of the CS derivative films are extremely sensitive to water and heat stimuli, because water broke the hydrogen bonds between adjacent CS molecules and thus altered the rigid environment in the material. Finally, they can be used as a stimuli-responsive ink and for monitoring environmental humidity.

D-O-A based organic phosphors for both aggregation-induced electrophosphorescence and host-free sensitization

Pure organic phosphors capable of room-temperature phosphorescence show a great potential in organic light-emitting diodes, while it is limited by the big challenge to realize efficient electroluminescence under electric excitation. Herein, we develop a class of organic phosphors based on acridine as the electron donor, triazine as the electron acceptor and oxygen as the bridge between them. Benefitting from the characteristic donor-oxygen-acceptor geometry, these compounds are found to behave an exciting aggregation-induced organic room-temperature electrophosphorescence, and achieve a record-high external quantum efficiency of 15.8% for non-doped devices. Furthermore, they can sensitize multi-resonant emitters in the absence of any additional wide bandgap host, leading to an effective narrowband emission with a peak external quantum efficiency of 26.4% and a small full-width at half maximum of 26 nm. The results clearly indicate that donor-oxygen-acceptor geometry is a promising strategy to design organic phosphors suitable for organic light-emitting diodes.

Observation of Chiral-selective room-temperature phosphorescence enhancement via chirality-dependent energy transfer

Pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), particularly from guest-host doped systems, has seen exponential growth in the last several years due to their high modulation flexibility, and yet challenges remain with respect to mechanistic elucidations and advantageous applications. Here we show that by constructing guest-host doped RTP systems from chiral components, namely, chiral amino compound-modified phthalimide hosts and naphthalimide guests, a chiral-selective RTP enhancement phenomenon can be observed. For example, R-enantiomeric guests in R-enantiomeric hosts produce strong red RTP afterglow while no appreciable RTP could be observed in the S-R guest-host counterpart. An unprecedented RTP intensity difference > 10² folds with the ability to distinguish an enantiomeric excess of 98% could be achieved. Temperature-dependent measurements suggest that a chirality-dependent energy transfer process may be involved in the observed phenomenon, which can be harnessed to extend the RTP application to the chiral recognition of amino compounds, such as amino alcohols.

Stimulus-Responsive Organic Phosphorescence Materials Based on Small Molecular Host-Guest Doped Systems

Small molecular host-guest doped materials exhibit superiority toward high-efficiency room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials due to their structural design diversity and ease of preparation. Dynamic RTP materials display excellent characteristics, such as good reversibility, quick response, and tunable luminescence ability, making them applicable to various cutting-edge technologies. Herein, we summarize the advances in host-guest doped dynamic RTP materials that respond to external and internal stimuli and present some insights into the molecular design strategies and underlying mechanisms. Subsequently, specific viewpoints are described regarding this promising field for the development of dynamic RTP materials. This Perspective is highly beneficial for future intelligent applications of dynamic RTP systems.
