Metal-Organic Frameworks as Versatile Media for Polymer Adsorption and Separation

A cobalt(II) coordination polymer-derived catalyst engineered via temperature-induced semi-reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) dehydration for efficient liquid-phase epoxidation of olefins

Single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformations provide more avenues for phase transitions, which have piqued great interest in crystal engineering. In this work, a 3D Co(II)-based coordination polymer (CP), {Co2(OH2)8(btec)}·4H2O (1), (where (btec)4- = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate) undergoes SCSC transition upon heating at 180 °C to afford an anhydrous phase [Co2(btec)] (1'). Room-temperature water-vapour induced semi-reversible SCSC transformation of 1' involves condensation of two water molecules coordinating to the metal cluster, yielding a new framework [Co2(OH2)2(btec)] (2). These SCSC transitions were accomplished through a sequential bond breaking and new bond formation process which was accompanied by colour changes from orange (1) → violet (1') → pink (2). All materials were structurally elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and further established by various analytical techniques. According to SCXRD data, all the frameworks possess octahedral geometries around the cobalt(II) sphere. SCXRD studies further revealed that 1 is a polymeric architecture with a binodal 4-c sql topology while 1' and 2 possess (3,6)-c kgd and (4,6)-c scu 3D nets, respectively. By virtue of multitopicity exhibited by the tetracarboxylate, the coordination number of the linker around the Co(II) sphere increased from four (in 1) to eight (in 1') and then decreased to six (in 2). Most interestingly, permanent porosity could be observed for the dihydrate 2, originated from potential void space as substantiated by dinitrogen (N2) sorption isotherm. These porous frameworks were active catalysts for the aerobic epoxidation of the model substrate cyclohexene using molecular oxygen (O2) as the final oxidant in the presence of the sacrificial i-butyraldehyde (IBA) reductant. For using the dihydrous phase 2, cyclohexene and various other olefins were catalytically oxidised to their corresponding epoxides with up to 38.5% conversion and 99.0% selectivity. The catalyst 2 can be expediently recycled in four runs without significant loss of activity. This research demonstrates that a little innovation in the active-site-engineered organic-inorganic hybrid materials can significantly enhance the catalytic performance and selectivity of coordination polymer-derived heterogeneous catalysts.

Selective Removal of Denatured Proteins Using MOF Nanopores

Here we present, for the first time, the selective adsorption of denatured proteins using a metal-organic framework (MOF), demonstrating promising potential for protein purification. Typical proteins, such as lysozyme and carbonic anhydrase B, enter the pores of MIL-101 through their narrow apertures when they are denatured to an unfolded state. Selective adsorption is achieved by finely tuning two key features: the sizes of the aperture and cage of the MOF nanopores, which are responsible for sorting unfolded polypeptide chains and inhibiting the translocation of the native form into the pores, respectively. By leveraging this selective adsorption, we successfully purified a mixture of native and denatured proteins by adding MOF to the mixture, achieving a native purity of over 99%.

Co-adsorption performance of iodine and NOX in iodine exhaust gas by NH2-MIL-125

Ti-based MOFs exhibit ultra-high stability in radioactive waste gases containing nitrogen oxides (NOX) and are effective in capturing radioactive iodine. In this study, NH2-MIL-125 was synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal method and its adsorption performance for iodine was investigated using batch adsorption experiments, the stability of materials was tested by simulating post-processing conditions. The results indicated that NH2-MIL-125 had a maximum iodine adsorption capacity of 1.61 g/g at 75 ℃ and reached adsorption equilibrium within 60 min, and the adsorption capacity of methyl iodine reached 776.9 mg/g. The material also exhibited excellent stability and iodine adsorption performance in the presence of NOX. After soaking in NO2 for 24 h, its structure remained stable and the adsorption capacity for iodine remained at 231.5 mg/g. The excellent co-adsorption performance of NH2-MIL-125 on iodine and NOX was attributed to the synergistic effects of Ti-OH groups and amino functional groups. These findings provide a reference for the capture of radioactive iodine and also demonstrate the potential of NH2-MIL-125 for iodine capture during spent fuel reprocessing.

Chromatographic Separation: A Versatile Strategy to Prepare Discrete and Well-Defined Polymer Libraries

ConspectusThe preparation of discrete and well-defined polymers is an emerging strategy for emulating the remarkable precision achieved by macromolecular synthesis in nature. Although modern controlled polymerization techniques have unlocked access to a cornucopia of materials spanning a broad range of monomers, molecular weights, and architectures, the word "controlled" is not to be confused with "perfect". Indeed, even the highest-fidelity polymerization techniques─yielding molar mass dispersities in the vicinity of Đ = 1.05─unavoidably create a considerable degree of structural and/or compositional dispersity due to the statistical nature of chain growth. Such dispersity impacts many of the properties that researchers seek to control in the design of soft materials.The development of strategies to minimize or entirely eliminate dispersity and access molecularly precise polymers therefore remains a key contemporary challenge. While significant advances have been made in the realm of iterative synthetic methods that construct oligomers with an exact molecular weight, head-to-tail connectivity, and even stereochemistry via small-molecule organic chemistry, as the word "iterative" suggests, these techniques involve manually propagating monomers one reaction at a time, often with intervening protection and deprotection steps. As a result, these strategies are time-consuming, difficult to scale, and remain limited to lower molecular weights. The focus of this Account is on an alternative strategy that is more accessible to the general scientific community because of its simplicity, versatility, and affordability: chromatography. Researchers unfamiliar with the intricacies of synthesis may recall being exposed to chromatography in an undergraduate chemistry lab. This operationally simple, yet remarkably powerful, technique is most commonly encountered in the purification of small molecules through their selective (differential) adsorption to a column packed with a low-cost stationary phase, usually silica. Because the requisite equipment is readily available and the actual separation takes little time (on the order of 1 h), chromatography is used extensively in small-molecule chemistry throughout industry and academia alike. It is, therefore, perhaps surprising that similar types of chromatography are not more widely leveraged in the field of polymer science as well.Here, we discuss recent advances in using chromatography to control the structure and properties of polymeric materials. Emphasis is placed on the utility of an adsorption-based mechanism that separates polymers based on polarity and composition at tractable (gram) scales for materials science, in contrast to size exclusion, which is extremely common but typically analyzes very small quantities of a sample (∼1 mg) and is limited to separating by molar mass. Key concepts that are highlighted include (1) the separation of low-molecular-weight homopolymers into discrete oligomers (Đ = 1.0) with precise chain lengths and (2) the efficient fractionation of block copolymers into high-quality and widely varied libraries for accelerating materials discovery. In summary, the authors hope to convey the exciting possibilities in polymer science afforded by chromatography as a scalable, versatile, and even automated technique that unlocks new avenues of exploration into well-defined materials for a diverse assortment of researchers with different training and expertise.

Phase behavior of patchy colloids confined in patchy porous media

A simple model for functionalized disordered porous media is proposed and the effects of confinement on self-association, percolation and phase behavior of a fluid of patchy particles are studied. The media are formed by randomly distributed hard-sphere obstacles fixed in space and decorated by a certain number of off-center square-well sites. The properties of the fluid of patchy particles, represented by the fluid of hard spheres each bearing a set of the off-center square-well sites, are studied using an appropriate combination of the scaled particle theory for the porous media, Wertheim's thermodynamic perturbation theory, and Flory-Stockmayer theory. To assess the accuracy of the theory a set of computer simulations have been performed. In general, predictions of the theory appeared to be in good agreement with the computer simulation results. Confinement and competition between the formation of bonds connecting the fluid particles, and connecting fluid particles and obstacles of the matrix, gave rise to a re-entrant phase behavior with three critical points and two separate regions of the liquid-gas phase coexistence.

MOF-Thermogel Composites for Differentiated and Sustained Dual Drug Delivery

In recent years, multidrug therapy has gained increasing popularity due to the possibility of achieving synergistic drug action and sequential delivery of different medical payloads for enhanced treatment efficacy. While a number of composite material release platforms have been developed, few combine the bottom-up design versatility of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to tailor drug release behavior, with the convenience of temperature-responsive hydrogels (or thermogels) in their unique ease of administration and formulation. Yet, despite their potential, MOF-thermogel composites have been largely overlooked for simultaneous multidrug delivery. Herein, we report the first systematic study of common MOFs (UiO-66, MIL-53(Al), MIL-100(Fe), and MOF-808) with different pore sizes, geometries, and hydrophobicities for their ability to achieve simultaneous dual drug release when embedded within PEG-containing thermogel matrices. After establishing that MOFs exert small influences on the rheological properties of the thermogels despite the penetration of polymers into the MOF pores in solution, the release profiles of ibuprofen and caffeine as model hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs, respectively, from MOF-thermogel composites were investigated. Through these studies, we elucidated the important role of hydrophobic matching between MOF pores and loaded drugs in order for the MOF component to distinctly influence drug release kinetics. These findings enabled us to identify a viable MOF-thermogel composite containing UiO-66 that showed vastly different release kinetics between ibuprofen and caffeine, enabling temporally differentiated yet sustained simultaneous drug release to be achieved. Finally, the MOF-thermogel composites were shown to be noncytotoxic in vitro, paving the way for these underexploited composite materials to find possible clinical applications for multidrug therapy.

Multivariate Metal-Organic Frameworks Prepared by Simultaneous Metal/Ligand Exchange for Enhanced C2-C3 Selective Recovery from Natural Gas

Recovering light alkanes from natural gas is a critical but challenging process in petrochemical production. Herein, we propose a postmodification strategy via simultaneous metal/ligand exchange to prepare multivariate metal-organic frameworks with enhanced capacity and selectivity of ethane (C2H6) and propane (C3H8) for their recovery from natural gas with methane (CH4) as the primary component. By utilizing the Kuratowski-type secondary building unit of CFA-1 as a scaffold, namely, {Zn5(OAc)4}6+, the Zn2+ metal ions and OAc- ligands were simultaneously exchanged by other transition metal ions and halogen ligands under mild conditions. Inspiringly, this postmodification treatment can give rise to improved capacity for C2H6 and C3H8 without a noticeable increase in CH4 uptake, and consequently, it resulted in significantly enhanced selectivity toward C2H6/CH4 and C3H8/CH4. In particular, by adjusting the species and amount of the modulator, the optimal sample CFA-1-NiCl2-2.3 demonstrated the maximum capacities of C2H6 (5.00 mmol/g) and C3H8 (8.59 mmol/g), increased by 29 and 32% compared to that of CFA-1. Moreover, this compound exhibited excellent separation performance toward C2H6/CH4 and C3H8/CH4, with high uptake ratios of 6.9 and 11.9 at 298 K and 1 bar, respectively, superior to the performance of a majority of the reported MOFs. Molecular simulations were applied to unravel the improved separation mechanism of CFA-1-NiCl2-2.3 toward C2H6/CH4 and C3H8/CH4. Furthermore, remarkable thermal/chemical robustness, moderate isosteric heat, and fully reproducible breakthrough experiments were confirmed on CFA-1-NiCl2-2.3, indicating its great potential for light alkane recovery from natural gas.

Sensitive Current Sensor Based on a Lanthanide Framework with Lewis Basic Bipyridyl Sites for Cu2+ Detection

A new Yb-based three-dimensional metal-organic framework with free Lewis basic sites, [Yb₂(ddbpdc)₃(CH₃OH)₂] (referred to as ACBP-6), from YbCl₃ and (6R,8R)-6,8-dimethyl-7,8-dihydro-6H-[1,5]dioxonino[7,6-b:8,9-b']dipyridine-3,11-dicarboxylic acid (H₂ddbpdc) was synthesized by a conventional solvothermal method. Two Yb³⁺ are connected by three carboxyl groups to form the [Yb₂(CO₂)₅] binuclear unit, which is further bridged by two carboxyl moieties to produce a tetranuclear secondary building unit. With further ligation of the ligand ddbpdc^2-, a 3-D MOF with helical channels is constructed. In the MOF, Yb³⁺ only coordinates with O atoms, leaving the bipyridyl N atoms of ddbpdc^2- unoccupied. The unsaturated Lewis basic sites make this framework possible to coordinate with other metal ions. After growing the ACBP-6 in situ into a glass micropipette, a novel current sensor is formed. This sensor shows high selectivity and a high signal-to-noise ratio toward Cu²⁺ detection with a detection limit of 1 μM, due to the stronger coordination ability between the Cu²⁺ and the bipyridyl N atoms.

Metal organic frameworks-in-nanochannels: A tailorable chromatography membrane for isolation of target protein

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrate strong potential in biosample separation. However, the obtained MOFs powders are unsuitable for recovery techniques in an aqueous solution, especially the challenges of withdrawing MOFs particles and expanding their functions for specific applications. Herein, a general strategy is designed utilizing metal oxide-nanochannel arrays as precursors and templates for in-situ selective growth of MOFs structures. The exemplary MOFs (Ni-bipy) with tailored composition are selectively grown in NiO/TiO₂ nanochannel membrane (NM) using NiO as the sacrificial precursor, which enables one to achieve a ∼262 times concentration of histidine-tagged proteins within 100 min. The significantly improved adsorption efficiency in a wide pH range and the effective enrichment from a complex matrix as a nanofilter illustrate the great potential of MOFs in nanochannels membranes for the high-efficiency recovery of essential proteins in complex biological samples. The porous self-aligned Ni-MOFs/TiO₂ NM exhibits biocompatibility and flexible functionalities, which is desirable for the generation of multifunctional nanofilter devices and developing biomacromolecule delivery vehicles.

Nanopolyhybrids: Materials, Engineering Designs, and Advances in Thermal Management

The fundamental requirements for thermal comfort along with the unbalanced growth in the energy demand and consumption worldwide have triggered the development and innovation of advanced materials for high thermal-management capabilities. However, continuous development remains a significant challenge in designing thermally robust materials for the efficient thermal management of industrial devices and manufacturing technologies. The notable achievements thus far in nanopolyhybrid design technologies include multiresponsive energy harvesting/conversion (e.g., light, magnetic, and electric), thermoregulation (including microclimate), energy saving in construction, as well as the miniaturization, integration, and intelligentization of electronic systems. These are achieved by integrating nanomaterials and polymers with desired engineering strategies. Herein, fundamental design approaches that consider diverse nanomaterials and the properties of nanopolyhybrids are introduced, and the emerging applications of hybrid composites such as personal and electronic thermal management and advanced medical applications are highlighted. Finally, current challenges and outlook for future trends and prospects are summarized to develop nanopolyhybrid materials.

Transformation of a copper-based metal-organic polyhedron into a mixed linker MOF for CO2 capture

A new mixed linker metal-organic framework (MOF) has been synthesized from a copper-based metal-organic polyhedron (MOP-1) and 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bipy). The CuMOF-Bipy with a formula of [Cu₂(2,2'-bpy)₂(m-BDC)₂]_n is comprised of a binuclear Cu(II) node coordinated to 2,2'-bipy, and isophthalic acid (m-BDC), which bridges to neighboring nodes. The crystal structure of CuMOF-Bipy consists of a stacked two-dimensional framework with the sql topology. CuMOF-Bipy was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and CO₂ sorption. CuMOF-Bipy was shown to have one-dimensional sinusoidal channels that allow diffusion of CO₂ but not N₂.

MOFs-alginate/polyacrylic acid/poly (ethylene imine) heparin-mimicking beads as a novel hemoadsorbent for bilirubin removal in vitro and vivo models

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have a potential application in blood purification, but their microcrystalline nature has hampered their industrial application. Here, novel MOFs-polymer beads based on UiO, sodium alginate, polyacrylic acid, and poly (ethylene imine) were prepared and applied as a whole blood hemoadsorbent for the first time. The amidation among polymers immobilized UiO66-NH₂ into the network of the optimal product (SAP-3), and the NH₂ of UiO66-NH₂ significantly increased the removal rate (70 % within 5 min) of SAP-3 on bilirubin. The adsorption of SAP-3 on bilirubin mainly obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic, Langmuir isotherm and Thomas models with a maximum adsorption capacity (q_m) of 63.97 mg·g^-1. Experimental and density functional theory simulation results show that bilirubin was mainly adsorbed by UiO66-NH₂via electrostatic force, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. Notably, the adsorption in vivo show that the total bilirubin removal rate in the whole blood of the rabbit model was up to 42 % after 1 h of adsorption. Given its excellent stability, cytotoxicity, and hemocompatibility, SAP-3 has a great potential in hemoperfusion therapy. This study proposes an effective strategy for settling the powder property of MOFs and could provide experimental and theoretical references for application of MOFs in blood purification.

Experimental observation of metal-organic framework-polymer interaction forces and intercalation

We attach a MOF crystallite to an atomic force microscope cantilever to realize a system for rapidly and quantitatively studying the interaction between single-crystal MOFs and polymer films. Using this method, we find evidence of polymer intercalation into MOF pores. This approach can accelerate composite design.

Supramolecular Engineering of Amorphous Porous Polymers for Rapid Adsorption of Micropollutants and Solar-Powered Volatile Organic Compounds Management

Freshwater shortage is becoming one of the most critical global challenges owing to severe water pollution caused by micropollutants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, current purification technology shows slow adsorption of micropollutants and requires an energy-intensive process for VOCs removal from water. In this study, a highly efficient molecularly engineered covalent triazine framework (CTF) for rapid adsorption of micropollutants and VOC-intercepting performance using solar distillation is reported. Supramolecular design and mild oxidation of CTFs (CTF-OXs) enable hydrophilic internal channels and improve molecular sieving of micropollutants. CTF-OX shows rapid removal efficiency of micropollutants (>99.9% in 10 s) and can be regenerated several times without performance loss. Uptake rates of selected micropollutants are high, with initial pollutant uptake rates of 21.9 g mg^-1  min^-1 , which are the highest rates recorded for bisphenol A (BPA) adsorption. Additionally, photothermal composite membrane fabrication using CTF-OX exhibits high VOC rejection rate (up to 98%) under 1 sun irradiation (1 kW m^-2 ). A prototype of synergistic purification system composed of adsorption and solar-driven membrane can efficiently remove over 99.9% of mixed phenol derivatives. This study provides an effective strategy for rapid removal of micropollutants and high VOC rejection via solar-driven evaporation process.

Photoinduced movement: how photoirradiation induced the movements of matter

Pioneered by the success on active transport of ions across membranes in 1980 using the regulation of the binding properties of crown ethers with covalently linked photoisomerizable units, extensive studies on the movements by using varied interactions between moving objects and environments have been reported. Photoinduced movements of various objects ranging from molecules, polymers to microscopic particles were discussed from the aspects of the driving for the movements, materials design to achieve the movements and systems design to see and to utilize the movements are summarized in this review.

Mixed Metal-Organic Framework Stationary Phases for Liquid Chromatography

Strategic design of the stationary phase in liquid chromatography (LC) is crucial for modern separation science. Herein, a design approach using mixed metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as tunable LC stationary phases is proposed. Three MOFs with an isostructural pillared-layer structure are employed, with pore sizes tuned by the systematic design of the constituent ligands, using 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (bdc), 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylate (ndc), and 9,10-anthracenedicarboxylate (adc). Packed columns filled with the MOFs and their mixed-particle/solid-solution stationary phases are prepared and examined for the retention capability of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in LC. While the MOF-packed columns filled with binary mixtures of different MOF particles provide good control of the retention with respect to the particle mixing ratio, the columns filled with mixed-linker solid-solution MOFs show a significant multicomponent effect on the retention behavior. Specifically, mixed-linker solid-solution MOFs consisting of bdc/ndc binary ligands are found to show a strong retention that surpasses even their parent MOFs, namely, pure bdc- and ndc-MOF stationary phases. The retention behavior on the MOF-packed columns is explained by the specific nanostructures of the solid-solution MOFs, which affects the balance between substrate affinity and adsorption kinetics into the MOF pores, dictating the total retention capability. The results provide an extra dimension for stationary phase design using MOFs as a promising recognition medium for LC.
