Nanostructured Block Polymer Electrolytes: Tailoring Self-Assembly to Unlock the Potential in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Impact of optimised quasi-block structures on the properties of polymer electrolytes

A set of ionic quasi-block copolymers were investigated to determine the effects of their composition and structure on their performance in their application as solid-state battery electrolytes. Diffusion and electrochemical tests have shown that these new quasi-block electrolytes have comparable performance to traditional block copolymers reaching ionic conductivities of 3.8 × 10-4 S cm-1 and lithium-ion diffusion of 4.6 × 10-12 m2 s-1 at 80 °C. It was illustrated that the mechanical properties of each quasi-block electrolyte are highly dependent on the order of monomer addition in polymer synthesis while the phase morphology hints at each of the quasi-blocks' unique compositional make up.

Ionic Liquid Crystal-Polymer Composite Electromechanical Actuators: Design of Two-Dimensional Molecular Assemblies for Efficient Ion Transport and Effect of Electrodes on Actuator Performance

We present the development of free-standing ionic liquid crystal-polymer composite electrolyte films aimed at achieving high-frequency response electromechanical actuators. Our approach entails designing novel layered ionic liquid-crystalline (LC) assemblies by complexing a mesomorphic dimethylphosphate with either a lithium salt or a room-temperature ionic liquid through the formation of ion-dipole interactions or hydrogen bonds. These electrolytes, exhibiting room-temperature ionic conductivities on the order of 10-4 S cm-1 and wide LC temperature ranges up to 77 °C, were successfully integrated into porous polymer networks. We systematically investigated the impact of ions and electrodes on the performance of ionic electroactive actuators. Specifically, the Li+-based liquid crystal-polymer composite actuator with PEDOT:PSS electrodes demonstrated the highest bending deformation, achieving a strain of 0.68% and exhibiting a broad frequency response up to 110 Hz, with a peak-to-peak displacement of 3 μm. In contrast, the ionic-liquid-based liquid crystal-polymer composite actuator with active carbon electrodes showcased a bending response at a maximum frequency of 50 Hz and a force generation of 0.48 mN, without exhibiting the back relaxation phenomenon. These findings offer valuable insights for advancing high-performance electromechanical systems with applications ranging from soft robotics to haptic interfaces.

Phase Morphology Dependence of Ionic Conductivity and Oxidative Stability in Fluorinated Ether Solid-State Electrolytes

Solid-state polymer electrolytes can enable the safe operation of high energy density lithium metal batteries; unfortunately, they have low ionic conductivity and poor redox stability at electrode interfaces. Fluorinated ether polymer electrolytes are a promising approach because the ether units can solvate and conduct ions, while the fluorinated moieties can increase oxidative stability. However, current perfluoropolyether (PFPE) electrolytes exhibit deficient lithium-ion coordination and ion transport. Here, we incorporate cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) units within the PFPE matrix and increase the polymer blend electrolyte conductivity by 6 orders of magnitude as compared to pure PFPE at 60 °C from 1.55 × 10-11 to 2.26 × 10-5 S/cm. Blending varying ratios of PEG and PFPE induces microscale phase separation, and we show the impact of morphology on ion solvation and dynamics in the electrolyte. Spectroscopy and simulations show weak ion-PFPE interactions, which promote salt phase segregation into-and ion transport within-the PEG domain. These polymer electrolytes show promise for use in high-voltage lithium metal batteries with improved Li|Li cycling due to enhanced mechanical properties and high-voltage stability beyond 6 V versus Li/Li+. Our work provides insights into transport and stability in fluorinated polymer electrolytes for next-generation batteries.

Borate-containing triblock copolymer electrolytes for improved lithium-ion transference number and interface stability

The electrolytes with high lithium-ion transference number (tLi+) can reduce the formation of concentration polarization during charge/discharge process and improve the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we report triblock copolymer electrolytes (PBOEE) containing borate. The sp2 hybridized boron atoms acting as Lewis acids can anchor the anions of lithium salts, enabling PBOEE to achieve high tLi+ of up to 0.53. Also, the borate groups can promote the formation of stable organic-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film, which enables the Li symmetric cell to cycle stably at 0.1 mA cm-2/0.1 mAh cm-2 for more than 3100 h with a low overpotential of 0.08 V under 50 °C. The optimized PBOEE_24 has an ionic conductivity of 1.41 × 10-4 S cm-1 and electrochemical stability window of 4.8 V vs. Li+/Li at 50 °C. Combining these advantages, the LiFePO4/PBOEE_24/Li cell exhibits an initial discharge specific capacity of 157.3 mA h g-1 at 0.5C with a capacity retention of 85 % after 600 cycles under 50 °C. At a higher current density of 1C, the discharge capacity maintains at 128.0 mA h g-1 after 400 cycles with a capacity retention of 84.88 %. These results suggest that block copolymer containing sp2 hybridized boron atoms is a promising all-solid-state polymer electrolyte.

Dendritic Solid Polymer Electrolytes: A New Paradigm for High-Performance Lithium-Based Batteries

Li-ions battery is widely used and recognized, but its energy density based on organic electrolytes has approached the theoretical upper limit, while the use of organic electrolytes also brings some safety hazards (leakage and flammability). Polymer electrolytes (PEs) are expected to fundamentally solve the safety problem and improve energy density. Therefore, Li-ions battery based on solid PE has become a research hotspot in recent years. However, low ionic conductivity and poor mechanical properties, as well as a narrow electrochemical window limit its further development. Dendritic PEs with unique topology structure has low crystallinity, high segmental mobility, and reduced chain entanglement, providing a new avenue for designing high-performance PEs. In this review, the basic concept and synthetic chemistry of dendritic polymers are first introduced. Then, this story will turn to how to balance the mechanical properties, ionic conductivity, and electrochemical stability of dendritic PEs from synthetic chemistry. In addition, accomplishments on dendritic PEs based on different synthesis strategies and recent advances in battery applications are summarized and discussed. Subsequently, the ionic transport mechanism and interfacial interaction are deeply analyzed. In the end, the challenges and prospects are outlined to promote further development in this booming field.

One-Step In Situ Polymerization: A Facile Design Strategy for Block Copolymer Electrolytes

To optimize the rapid transport of lithium ions (Li⁺ ) inside lithium metal batteries (LMBs), block copolymer electrolytes (BCPEs) have been fabricated in situ in LMBs via a one-step method combining reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and carboxylic acid-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization (ROP). The BCPEs balanced the Li⁺ coordination characteristics of the polyether- and polyester-based electrolytes to achieve a rapid Li⁺ migration in the SPEs. The carboxylic acid played a dual role since it both catalyzed the ROP and stabilized the interface. Furthermore, the in situ assembly of LMBs did effectively enable an efficient intercalation/de-intercalation of Li⁺ at the electrode/electrolyte interface. The in situ assembled Li/BCPE4/LFP exhibited high-capacity retention of 92 % after 400 cycles at 1 C. The one-step in situ fabrication of BCPEs provides a new direction for the design of polymer electrolytes.
