Molecular Borromean Rings Based on Half-Sandwich Organometallic Rectangles

The codriven assembly of molecular metalla-links ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) and metalla-knots ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) via coordination and noncovalent interactions

Although mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) display unique properties and functions associated with their intricate connectivity, limited assembly strategies are available for their synthesis. Herein, we presented a synergistic assembly strategy based on coordination and noncovalent interactions (π-π stacking and CH⋯π interactions) to selectively synthesize molecular closed three-link chains ([Formula: see text] links), highly entangled figure-eight knots ([Formula: see text] knots), trefoil knot ([Formula: see text] knot), and Borromean ring ([Formula: see text] link). [Formula: see text] links can be created by the strategic assembly of nonlinear multicurved ligands incorporating a furan or phenyl group with the long binuclear half-sandwich organometallic Cp*RhIII (Cp* = η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) clip. However, utilizing much shorter binuclear Cp*RhIII units for union with the 2,6-naphthyl-containing ligand led to a [Formula: see text] knot because of the increased π-π stacking interactions between four consecutive stacked layers and CH⋯π interactions. Weakening such π-π stacking interactions resulted in a [Formula: see text] knot. The universality of this synergistic assembly strategy for building [Formula: see text] knots was verified by utilizing a 1,5-naphthyl-containing ligand. Quantitative conversion between the [Formula: see text] knot and the simple macrocycle species was accomplished by adjusting the concentrations monitored by NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Furthermore, increasing the stiff π-conjugated area of the binuclear unit afforded molecular Borromean ring, and this topology is a topological isomer of the [Formula: see text] link. These artificial metalla-links and metalla-knots were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR and ESI-MS. The results offer a potent strategy for building higher-order MIMs and emphasize the critical role that noncovalent interactions play in creating sophisticated topologies.

Selective Construction and Structural Transformation of Homogeneous Linear Metalla[4]catenane and Metalla[2]catenane Assemblies

Although the synthesis of mechanically interlocked molecules has been extensively researched, selectively constructing homogeneous linear [4]catenanes remains a formidable challenge. Here, we selectively constructed a homogeneous linear metalla[4]catenane in a one-step process through the coordination-driven self-assembly of a bidentate benzothiadiazole derivative ligand and a binuclear half-sandwich rhodium precursor. The formation of metalla[4]catenanes was facilitated by cooperative interactions between strong sandwich-type π-π stacking and non-classical hydrogen bonds between the components. Moreover, by modulating the aromatic substituents on the binuclear precursor, two homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes were obtained. The molecular structures of these metallacatenanes were unambiguously characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Additionally, reversible structural transformation between metal-catenanes and the corresponding metallarectangles could be achieved by altering their concentration, as confirmed by mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy studies.

Cross-catenation between position-isomeric metallacages

The study of cross-catenated metallacages, which are complex self-assembly systems arising from multiple supramolecular interactions and hierarchical assembly processes, is currently lacking but could provide facile insights into achieving more precise control over low-symmetry/high-complexity hierarchical assembly systems. Here, we report a cross-catenane formed between two position-isomeric Pt(II) metallacages in the solid state. These two metallacages formed [2]catenanes in solution, whereas a 1:1 mixture selectively formed a cross-catenane in crystals. Varied temperature nuclear magnetic resonance experiments and time-of-flight mass spectra are employed to characterize the cross-catenation in solutions, and the dynamic library of [2]catenanes are shown. Additionally, we searched for the global-minimum structures of three [2]catenanes and re-optimized the low-lying structures using density functional theory calculations. Our results suggest that the binding energy of cross-catenanes is significantly larger than that of self-catenanes within the dynamic library, and the selectivity in crystallization of cross-catenanes is thermodynamic. This study presents a cross-catenated assembly from different metallacages, which may provide a facile insight for the development of low-symmetry/high-complexity self-assemble systems.

Construction and Hierarchical Self-Assembly of a Supramolecular Metal-Carbene Complex with Multifunctional Units

Hierarchical combinations involving metal-ligand interactions and host-guest interactions can consolidate building blocks with unique functions into material properties. This study reports the construction and hierarchical self-assembly of multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex containing three crown ether units and three ferrocene units. Host-guest interactions between the multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex and organic ammonium salts were investigated, revealing that crown ether-based host-guest interactions can effectively regulate the electrochemical properties of the complex. Utilizing bisammonium salt as the cross-linker and multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex as the core, a stimuli-responsive and self-healing supramolecular gel with different functional units was obtained.

Unravelling the Roles of Solvophobic Effects and π⋅⋅⋅π Stacking Interactions in the Formation of [2]Catenanes Featuring Di-(N-Heterocyclic Carbene) Building Blocks

A series of [2]catenanes has been prepared from di-NHC building blocks by utilizing solvophobic effects and/or π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. The dinickel naphthobiscarbene complex syn-[1] and the kinked biphenyl-bridged bipyridyl ligand L2 yield the [2]catenane [2-IL](OTf)4 by self-assembly. Solvophobic effects are pivotal for the formation of the interlocked species. Substitution of the biphenyl-linker in L2 for a pyromellitic diimide group gave ligand L3 , which yielded in combination with syn-[1] the [2]catenane [3-IL](OTf)4 . This assembly exhibits enhanced stability in diluted solution, aided by additional π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. The π⋅⋅⋅π stacking was augmented by the introduction of a pyrene bridge between two NHC donors in ligand L4 . Di-NHC precursor H2 -L4 (PF6 )2 reacts with Ag2 O to give the [Ag2 L4 2 ]2 [2]catenane [4-IL](PF6 )4 , which shows strong π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions between the pyrene groups. This assembly was readily converted into the [Au2 L4 2 ]2 gold species [5-IL](PF6 )4 , which exhibits exceptional stability based on the strong π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions and the enhanced stability of the Au-CNHC bonds.

Self-Assembly and Photothermal Conversion of MetallaRussian Doll and Metalla[2]catenanes Induced via Multiple Stacking Interactions

A variety of organometallic supramolecular architectures have been constructed over the past decades and their properties were also explored via different strategies. However, the synthesis of metalla-Russian doll is still a fascinating challenge. Herein, a series of new coordination supramolecular complexes, including a metalla-Russian doll, metalla[2]catenanes, and metallarectangles, were synthesized by using meticulously selected Cp*Rh (Cp* = η5-C5Me5) building units (E1, E2, and E3) and three rigid anthracylpyridine ligands (L1, L2, and L3) via a self-assembly strategy. While the combination of the short ligand L1 and E1 or E2 generated two metallarectangles, the longer ligand L2 containing an alkynyl group resulted in two new [2]catenanes, most likely due to which the strong electron-donating effect of alkynyl groups causes self-accumulation. Interestingly, an unusual Russian doll assembly was obtained through the reaction of L3 and E3 based on sextuple π···π stacking interactions. Furthermore, the dynamic structural conversion between [2]catenanes and the corresponding metallarectangles could be observed through concentration-, solvent-, and guest-induced effects. The [2]catenane complexes 4b displayed efficient photothermal conversion efficiency in solution (20.2%), in comparison with other organometallic macrocycles. We believe that π···π stacking interactions generate active nonradiative pathways and promote radiative photodeactivation pathways. This study proves the versatility of half-sandwich building units, not only to build complicated supramolecular topologies but also in effective functional materials for various appealing applications.

Dynamic Interconversion and Induced-Fit Guest Binding with Two Macrocycle-Based Coordination Cages

We report the syntheses and host-guest chemistry of two interconvertible coordination cages, Pd₂L₂ and Pd₁L₁, from a dynamic macrocycle ligand (L) and a cis-blocking (tmen)Pd(NO₃)₂ (tmen = tetramethylethylenediamine) unit (Pd). The water-soluble macrocyclic L, which can bind various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) guests in its cis-conformation, was constructed via four pyridinium bonds between two 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine [TPT] panels and two p-xylene bridges. We selectively formed each cage either by changing the reaction concentration/solvent/temperature or through induced-fit guest encapsulation, while direct assembly of L and Pd resulted in a mixture of Pd₂L₂ and Pd₁L₁ in equilibrium. X-ray structures of the free ligand and the host-guest complexes confirmed the induce-fit adaptive changes in the ligand's conformation and the cage's cavity. This work demonstrates a useful strategy for designing multistimuli-responsive supramolecular hosts by coordination self-assembly with macrocyclic ligands featuring rich conformational freedom.

Construction and Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Multifunctional Coordination Cages with Triangular Metal-Metal-Bonded Units

Herein, a series of face-capped (Tr₂M₃)₄L₄ (Tr = cycloheptatrienyl cationic ring; M = metal; L = organosulfur ligand) tetrahedral cages 1-3 functionalized with 12 appended crown ether moieties were designed and synthesized. The reversible binding of ammonium cations with peripheral crown ether moieties to adjust internal guest-binding was realized. Combination of a bisammonium linker and cage 3 led to the formation of a supramolecular gel SPN1 via host-guest interactions between the crown ether moieties and ammonium salts. The obtained supramolecular gel exhibited multiple-stimuli responsiveness, injectability, and excellent self-healing properties and could be further developed to a SPN1-based drug delivery system. In addition, the storage modulus of SPN1 was 20 times higher than that of the model gel without Pd-Pd bonded blocks, and SPN1 had better self-healing properties compared with the latter, demonstrating the importance of such cages in improving mechanical strength without losing the dynamic properties of the material. The cytotoxicity in vitro of the drug-loaded (doxorubicin or methotrexate) SPN1 was significantly improved compared to that of free drugs.

Organometallic Borromean Rings and [2]Catenanes Featuring Di-NHC Ligands

We report herein a series of organometallic Borromean rings (BRs) and [2]catenanes prepared from benzobiscarbene ligands. The reaction of dinickel complexes of the benzobiscarbenes 1 a-1 c with a thiazolothiazole bridged bipyridyl ligand L² led by self-assembly to a series of organometallic BRs. Solvophobic effects played a crucial role in the formation and stability of the interlocked species. The stability of BRs is related to the N-alkyl substituents at the precursors 1 a-1 c, where longer alkyl substitutes improve stability and inter-ring interactions. Solvophobic effects are also important for the stability of [2]catenanes prepared from 1 a-1 c and a flexible bipyridyl ligand L³ . In solution, an equilibrium between the [2]catenanes and their macrocyclic building blocks was observed. High proportions of [2]catenanes were obtained in concentrated solutions or polar solvents. The proportion of [2]catenanes in solution could be further enhanced by lengthening of the N-alkyl substitutes.

Cation-Templated Assembly of 613 and 623 Metalla-Links

Facilitated by multiple stacking interactions between components, two kinds of metalla-links containing molecular Borromean rings (6₂³ links) and head-to-tail cyclic [3]catenanes (6₁³ links), as isomers, were constructed in high yield by introducing tri-μ-methoxyl-dinuclear complexes [(Cp*M)₂(μ-OCH₃)₃][OTf] (M = Rh^III or Ir^III, Cp* = η⁵-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, OTf = triflate) as unusual cationic guests during coordination-driven assembly. The topology of these intricate structures was controlled by strategically selecting two dipyridyl ligands that differ in their coordination orientations, as evidenced by X-ray crystallography and electrospray ionization-time-of-flight/mass spectrometry analysis. The behavior of the abovementioned metalla-links in solution was monitored and further studied by the detailed NMR techniques.

Diantimony Complexes [CpR 2 Mo2 (CO)4 (μ,η2 -Sb2 )] (CpR =C5 H5 , C5 H4 t Bu) as Unexpected Ligands Stabilizing Silver(I)n (n=1-4) Monomers, Dimers and Chains

Synthesis and reactivity of transition metal compounds bearing "naked" pnictogen atoms is an active research area with remarkable bonding patterns observed in the formed compounds. Within this field, intense investigations on the coordination behavior of complexes possessing P_n and As_n (2≤n≤5) moieties have been conducted. However, studies on heavier analogues have been ignored so far due to arduous challenges related to low yields and moderate air stability. Herein, we present the first in-depth study addressing the reactivity of organometallic complexes containing Sb-donor atoms with several Ag^I salts. These reactions afforded twelve unprecedented aggregates as monomers, dimers as well as three- and four-membered chains of Ag^I ions claimed in the literature to be inaccessible. Interatomic distances as well as computational evidence obtained with help of several different methods suggest the presence of Ag⋅⋅⋅Ag interactions in all complexes containing more than one Ag^I ion.

Stereocontrolled Self-Assembly of Ln(III)-Pt(II) Heterometallic Cages with Temperature-Dependent Luminescence

Structurally well-defined discrete d/f heterometallic complexes show diverse application potential in electrooptic and magnetic materials. However, precise control of the component and topology of such heterometallic compounds with fine-tuned photophysical properties is still challenging. Herein, we report the stereocontrolled syntheses of a series of Ln^III-Pt^II heterometallic cages through coordination-driven self-assembly of enantiopure alkynylplatinum-based metalloligands (L₁^R/S, L₂^R/S) with lanthanide ions (Ln = Eu^III, Yb^III, Nd^III, Lu^III). Taking advantage of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited state on the designed alkynylplatinum ligands, the excitation window for the sensitized near-infrared (NIR) luminescence on the Yb^III- and Nd^III-containing cages can be extended to the visible region (up to 500 nm). Linear temperature-dependent red and NIR emissions observed on the Ln₄(L₂^R/S)₆ (Ln^III = Eu^III and Yb^III, respectively) complexes suggest their potential applications as luminescent temperature sensors, with sensitivities of -0.54% (Ln^III = Eu^III, 77-250 K) and -0.17% (Ln^III = Yb^III, 77-300 K) per K achieved. This work not only offers a good strategy to prepare new d/f heterometallic supramolecular cages but also paves the way for the design of stimuli-responsive luminescent materials.

Binding of Dual-Function Hybridized MetalOrganic Capsules to Enzymes for Cascade Catalysis

The combination of chemo- and biocatalysis for multistep syntheses provides attractive advantages in terms of evolvability, promiscuity, and sustainability striving for desirable catalytic performance. Through the encapsulation of flavin analogues by both NADH and heme mimics codecorated heteroleptic metal-organic capsules, herein, we report a progressive host-guest strategy to imitate cytochrome P450s catalysis for cascade oxidative coupling catalysis. Besides the construction of stable dual-function metal-organic capsules and the modification of cofactor-decorated capsules at the domain of enzymes, this supramolecular strategy involves multistage directional electron flow, affording reactive ferric peroxide species for inducing oxygenation. Under light irradiation, the metal-organic capsule selectively converts stilbene to oxidative coupling products (including 2-oxo-1,2-diphenylethyl formate, 2-alkoxy-1,2-diphenylethanone) in tandem with enzymatic reactions respectively, at the domain of natural enzymes. The ingenious combination of capsules and enzymes with the in situ-regenerated capsule-loaded NADH cofactor promises non-native coupling reactions by forming regional cooperation and division. This abiotic-biotic conjugated host-guest strategy is conducive to the de novo creation of multifunctional components approaching active enzymatic sites for reinforced matter and energy transporting, demonstrating a key role of multicomponent supramolecular catalysts for one-pot integrated catalytic conversions.

Highly selective synthesis and near-infrared photothermal conversion of metalla-Borromean ring and [2]catenane assemblies

Although the selective synthesis of complicated supramolecular architectures has seen significant progress in recent years, the exploration of the properties of these complexes remains a fascinating challenge. Herein, a series of new supramolecular topologies, metalla[2]catenanes and Borromean ring assemblies, were constructed based on appropriate Cp*Rh building blocks and two rigid alkynyl pyridine ligands (L1, L2) via coordination-driven self-assembly. Interestingly, minor differences between the two rigid alkynyl pyridine ligands with/without organic substituents led to products with dramatically different topologies. Careful structural analysis showed that π–π stacking interactions play a crucial role in stabilizing these [2]catenanes and Borromean ring assemblies, while also promoting nonradiative transitions and triggering photothermal conversion in both the solution and the solid states. These results were showcased through comparative studies of the NIR photothermal conversion efficiencies of the Borromean ring assemblies, [2]catenanes and metallarectangles, which exhibited a wide range of photothermal conversion efficiencies (12.64–72.21%). The influence of the different Cp*Rh building blocks on the NIR photothermal conversion efficiencies of their assemblies was investigated. Good photothermal conversion properties of the assemblies were also found in the solid state. This study provides a new strategy to construct valuable half-sandwich-based NIR photothermal conversion materials while also providing promising candidates for the further development of materials science.

The selective synthesis of three kinds of supermolecular topologies, molecular Borromean ring, [2]catenane and metallarectangle based on two alkynyl ligands is presented. Remarkably, the NIR photothermal conversion efficiency was found to improve as the π–π stacking increases.

BODIPY based Metal-Organic Macrocycles and Frameworks: Recent Therapeutic Developments

Boron dipyrromethene, commonly known as BODIPY, based metal-organic macrocycles (MOCs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an interesting part of materials due to their versatile tunability of structure and functionality as well as significant physicochemical properties, thus broadening their applications in various scientific domains, especially in biomedical sciences. With increasing concern over the efficacy of cancer drugs versus quality of patient's life dilemma, scientists have been trying to fabricate novel comprehensive therapeutic strategies along with the discovery of novel safer drugs where research with BODIPY metal complexes has shown vital advancements. In this review, we have exclusively examined the articles involving studies related to light harvesting and photophysical properties of BODIPY based MOCs and MOFs, synthesized through self-assembly process, with a special focus on biomolecular interaction and its importance in anti-cancer drug research. In the end, we also emphasized the possible practical challenges involved during the synthetic process, based on our experience on dealing with BODIPY molecules and steps to overcome them along with their future potentials. This review will significantly help our fellow research groups, especially the budding researchers, to quickly and comprehensively get the near to wholesome picture of BODIPY based MOCs and MOFs and their present status in anti-cancer drug discovery.

Ultramacrocyclization in water via external templation

Condensing a dihydrazide and each of a series of cationic bisaldehyde compounds bearing polymethylene chains in weakly acidic water produces either a macrocycle in a [1 + 1] manner or its dimer namely a [2]catenane, or their mixture. The product distribution is determined by the length of the bisaldehydes. Addition of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) drives the catenane/macrocycle equilibria to the side of macrocycles, by forming ring-in-ring complexes with the latter. When the polymethylene unit of the bisaldehyde is replaced with a more rigid p-xylene linker, its self-assembly with the dihydrazide leads to quantitative formation of a [2]catenane. Upon addition of CB[8], the [2]catenane is transformed into an ultra-large macrocycle condensed in a [2 + 2] manner, which is encircled by two CB[8] rings. The framework of this macrocycle contains one hundred and two atoms, whose synthesis would be a formidable task without the external template CB[8]. Removal of CB[8] with a competitive guest leads to recovery of the [2]catenane.

Adaptive coordination assemblies based on a flexible tetraazacyclododecane ligand for promoting carbon dioxide fixation

Coordination hosts based on flexible ligands have received increasing attention due to their inherent adaptive cavities that often show induced-fit guest binding and catalysis like enzymes. Herein, we report the controlled self-assembly of a series of homo/heterometallic coordination hosts (Me₄enPd)_2n(ML)_n [n = 2/3; M = Zn(ii)/Co(ii)/Ni(ii)/Cu(ii)/Pd(ii)/Ag(i); Me₄en: N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine] with different shapes (tube/cage) from a flexible tetraazacyclododecane-based pyridinyl ligand (L) and cis-blocking Me₄enPd(ii) units. While the Ag(i)-metalated ligand (AgL) gave rise to the formation of a (Me₄enPd)₄(ML)₂-type cage, all other M(ii) ions led to isostructural (Me₄enPd)₆(ML)₃-type tubular complexes. Structural transformations between cages and tubes could be realized through transmetalation of the ligand. The buffering effect on the ML panels endows the coordination tubes with remarkable acid–base resistance, which makes the (Me₄enPd)₆(ZnL)₃ host an effective catalyst for the CO₂ to CO₃²⁻ conversion. Control experiments suggested that the integration of multiple active Zn(ii) sites on the tubular host and the perfect geometry match between CO₃²⁻ and the cavity synergistically promoted such a conversion. Our results provide an important strategy for the design of adaptive coordination hosts to achieve efficient carbon fixation.

A series of coordination hosts were prepared and their applications in CO₂ fixation were studied.

Self-Assembly of [3]Catenane and [4]Catenane Based on Neutral Organometallic Scaffolds

Transition metal-mediated templating and self-assembly have shown great potential to construct mechanically interlocked molecules. Herein, we describe the formation of the bimetallic [3]catenane and [4]catenane based on neutral organometallic scaffolds via the orthogonality of platinum-to-oxygen coordination-driven self-assembly and copper(I) template-directed strategy of a [2]pseudorotaxane. The structures of these bimetallic [3]catenane and [4]catenane were characterized by multinuclear NMR {¹H and ³¹P} spectroscopy, electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS), and PM6 semiempirical molecular orbital theoretical calculations. In addition, single-crystal X-ray analyses of the [3]catenane revealed two asymmetric [2]pseudorotaxane units inside the metallacycle. It was discovered that tubular structures were formed through the stacking of individual [3]catenane molecules driven by the strong π-π interactions.

Exciton Coupling in Redox-Active Salen based Self-Assembled Metallacycles

The incorporation of a redox-active nickel salen complex into supramolecular structures was explored via coordination-driven self-assembly with homobimetallic ruthenium complexes (bridged by oxalato or 5,8-dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinato ligands). The self-assembly resulted in the formation of a discrete rectangle using the oxalato complex and either a rectangle or a catenane employing the larger naphthoquinonato complex. The formation of the interlocked self-assembly was determined to be solvent and concentration dependent. The electronic structure and stability of the oxidized metallacycles was probed using electrochemical experiments, UV-Vis-NIR absorption, EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations, confirming ligand radical formation. Exciton coupling of the intense near-infrared (NIR) ligand radical intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) bands provided further confirmation of the geometric and electronic structures in solution.

Reversible pH-Controlled Catenation of a Benzobisimidazole-Based Tetranuclear Rectangle

The development of methodologies to control on demand and reversibly supramolecular transformations from self-assembled metalla-structures requires the rational design of architectures able to answer to an applied stimulus. While solvent or concentration changes, light exposure or addition of a chemical have been largely explored to provide these transformations, the case of pH sensitive materials is less described. Herein, we report the first example of a pH-triggered dissociation of a coordination-driven self-assembled interlocked molecular link. It incorporates a pH sensitive benzobisimidazole-based ligand that can be selectively protonated on its bisimidazole moieties. This generates intermolecular electrostatic repulsions that reduces drastically the stability of the interlocked structure, leading to its dissociation without any sign of protonation of the pyridine moieties involved in the coordination bonds. Importantly, the dissociation process is reversible through addition of a base.

Synthesis and Near-Infrared Photothermal Conversion of Discrete Supramolecular Topologies Featuring Half-Sandwich [Cp*Rh] Units

Although a large number of novel supramolecular topologies featuring half-sandwich [Cp*Rh] units have been reported, investigations into the properties of these architectures are astoundingly rare. In addition, the bidentate ligands employed to prepare these species have remained relatively homogeneous (i.e., symmetrical bis(pyri-4-dyl) ligands). To address these paucities in the field, the novel unsymmetrical ligand L2 and the rarely reported pyri-3-dyl ligand L3, all bearing aromatic phenazine groups (an N-heterocyclic analog of anthracene), were synthesized in addition to the common symmetrical pyri-4-dyl L1. [3]Catenane, [2]catenane, and Borromean rings assemblies were constructed successfully by the self-assembly of L1 with different building blocks. Afterward, ligand L2 was applied to prepare two novel molecular-tweezer-like compounds. Lastly, a twisted [2]catenane (relative to the [2]catenane constructed using L1) and a sandwiched metallarectangle were obtained using L3. π-π stacking interactions were observed to play a significant role in stabilizing these topologies, which also promoted nonradiative migration and triggered photothermal conversion in both the solution and the solid state. In the solution state, a clear rule of thumb was derived whereby the NIR photothermal conversion efficiency increased as the π-π stacking increased, and a very high photothermal conversion efficiency (35.5-62.4%) was observed. In addition, this family of half-sandwich-based assemblies also exhibited good photothermal conversion properties in the crystalline and noncrystal powder states. This research provides a novel method to synthesize excellent NIR photothermal conversion materials featuring half-sandwich [Cp*Rh] units and points to potential applications in the near future.

Structural Chemistry of Giant Metal Based Supramolecules

The review presents a bird-eye view on the state of research in the field of giant nonbiological discrete metal complexes and ions of nanometer size, which are structurally characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, using the crystal structure as a common key feature. The discussion is focused on the main structural features of the metal clusters, the clusters containing compact metal oxide/hydroxide/chalcogenide core, ligand-based metal-organic cages, and supramolecules as well as on the aspects related to the packing of the molecules or ions in the crystal and the methodological aspects of the single-crystal neutron and X-ray diffraction of these compounds.

Perylene Bisimide-Cored Supramolecular Coordination Complexes: Interplay between Ensembles, Excited State Processes, and Aggregation Behaviors

Manipulating the optical properties of fluorescent species is challenging owing to complicated and tedious synthetic works. Herein, the photophysical properties of perylene bisimide (PBI) were effectively tuned by varying the geometrical arrangement of PBI moieties within supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), where a PBI-based dicycle (2) and a trigonal prism (3) were generated via using a typical 90° Pt(II) reagent, cis-(PEt₃ )₂ Pt(OTf)₂ -based coordination-driven self-assembly approach. The ligand, an ortho-tetrapyridiyl-PBI (1), exhibits a moderate fluorescence quantum yield (∼13 %) and efficient inter-system crossing (ISC). 2, however, is much more emissive with a fluorescence quantum yield of ∼41 %, and the relevant ISC process is significantly hindered. The fluorescence quantum yield of 3 is merely ∼6 % due to the observed symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS), which turns to triplet state upon charge recombination. Interestingly, 3 could be fully transformed into 2 by simply adding a suitable amount of a 90° Pt(II)-based neutral triangle. Moreover, 2 tends to form discrete dimers both in crystal and solution states, but 3 does not show the property. Therefore, controlling geometrical arrangement of fluorophores through coordination-driven self-assembly could be taken as another effective way to tune their excited state relaxation pathways and construct high-performance optical molecular materials, which generally have to be prepared via organic synthesis.

Self-Assembly and Host-Guest Interactions of Pd3L2 Metallo-cryptophanes with Photoisomerizable Ligands

New photoswitchable pyridyl-azo-phenyl-decorated tripodal host ligands (L_az) that belong to the cyclotriveratrylene family have been synthesized, and their photoswitching behavior and crystal structures determined. The latter includes a remarkable 7-fold Borromean-weave entanglement of π-π stacked layers. Trigonal bipyramidal {[Pd(en)]₃(L_az)₂}⁶⁺ metallo-cryptophanes (en = ethylenediamine) were formed from these and a previously known pyridyl-azo-phenyl-decorated tripodal host ligand. These coordination cages dissociate at low concentrations and are less robust to photoswitching of the L_az ligands than were previously reported Ir(III)-linked metallo-cryptophanes with similar ligands, reflecting the greater lability of the Pd-N bonds. The {[Pd(en)]₃(L_az)₂}⁶⁺ cages all act as hosts, binding octyl sulfate anions, or N-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-1,8-naphthalimide in a dimethyl sulfoxide solution.

On Borromean links and related structures

The creation of knotted, woven and linked molecular structures is an exciting and growing field in synthetic chemistry. Presented here is a description of an extended family of structures related to the classical `Borromean rings', in which no two rings are directly linked. These structures may serve as templates for the designed synthesis of Borromean polycatenanes. Links of n components in which no two are directly linked are termed `n-Borromean' [Liang & Mislow (1994). J. Math. Chem. 16, 27-35]. In the classic Borromean rings the components are three rings (closed loops). More generally, they may be a finite number of periodic objects such as graphs (nets), or sets of strings related by translations as in periodic chain mail. It has been shown [Chamberland & Herman (2015). Math. Intelligencer, 37, 20-25] that the linking patterns can be described by complete directed graphs (known as tournaments) and those up to 13 vertices that are vertex-transitive are enumerated. In turn, these lead to ring-transitive (isonemal) n-Borromean rings. Optimal piecewise-linear embeddings of such structures are given in their highest-symmetry point groups. In particular, isonemal embeddings with rotoinversion symmetry are described for three, five, six, seven, nine, ten, 11, 13 and 14 rings. Piecewise-linear embeddings are also given of isonemal 1- and 2-periodic polycatenanes (chains and chain mail) in their highest-symmetry setting. Also the linking of n-Borromean sets of interleaved honeycomb nets is described.

A "Pretender" Croconate-Bridged Macrocyclic Tetraruthenium Complex: Sizable Redox Potential Splittings despite Electronically Insulated Divinylphenylene Diruthenium Entities

Careful optimization of the reaction conditions provided access to the particularly small tetraruthenium macrocycle ²Ru₂Ph-Croc, which is composed out of two redox-active divinylphenylene-bridged diruthenium entities {Ru}-1,4-CH=CH-C₆H₄-CH=CH-{Ru} (Ru₂Ph; {Ru} = Ru(CO)Cl(PⁱPr₃)₂) and two likewise redox-active and potentially non-innocent croconate linkers. According to single X-ray diffraction analysis, the central cavity of ²Ru₂Ph-Croc is shielded by the bulky PⁱPr₃ ligands, which come into close contact. Cyclic voltammetry revealed two pairs of split anodic waves in the weakly ion pairing CH₂Cl₂/NBu₄BAr^F₂₄ (BAr^F₂₄ = [B{C₆H₃(CF₃)₂-3,5}₄]⁻ electrolyte, while the third and fourth waves fall together in CH₂Cl₂/NBu₄PF₆. The various oxidized forms were electrogenerated and scrutinized by IR and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy. This allowed us to assign the individual oxidations to the metal-organic Ru₂Ph entities within ²Ru₂Ph-Croc, while the croconate ligands remain largely uninvolved. The lack of specific NIR bands that could be assigned to intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) in the mono- and trications indicates that these mixed-valent species are strictly charge-localized. ²Ru₂Ph-Croc is hence an exemplary case, where stepwise IR band shifts and quite sizable redox splittings between consecutive one-electron oxidations would, on first sight, point to electronic coupling, but are exclusively due to electrostatic and inductive effects. This makes ²Ru₂Ph-Croc a true “pretender”.

Self-Assembled Manganese(I)-Based Selenolato-Bridged Tetranuclear Metallorectangles: Host-Guest Interaction, Anticancer, and CO-Releasing Studies

Supramolecular one-step self-assembly of dimanganese decacarbonyl, diaryl diselenide, and linear dipyridyl ligands (L = pyrazine (pz), 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy), and trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)) has resulted in the formation of selenolato-bridged manganese(I)-based metallorectangles. The synthesis of tetranuclear Mn(I)-based metallorectangles [{(CO)₃Mn(μ-SeR)₂Mn(CO)₃}₂(μ-L)₂] (1-6) was facilitated by the oxidative addition of diaryl diselenide to dimanganese decacarbonyl with the simultaneous coordination of linear bidentate pyridyl linker in an orthogonal fashion. Formation of metallorectangles 1-6 was ascertained using IR, UV-vis, NMR spectroscopic techniques, and elemental analyses. The molecular mass of compounds 2, 4, and 6 were determined by ESI-mass spectrometry. Solid-state structural elucidation of 2, 3, and 6 by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods revealed a rectangular framework wherein selenolato-bridges and pyridyl ligands define the shorter and longer edges, respectively. Also, the guest binding capability of metallorectangles 3 and 5 with different aromatic guests was studied using UV-vis absorption and emission spectrophotometric titration methods that affirmed strong host-guest binding interactions. The formation of the host-guest complex between metallorectangle 3 and pyrene has been explicitly corroborated by the single-crystal X-ray structure of 3•pyrene. Moreover, select metallorectangles 1-4 and 6 were studied to explore their anticancer activity, while CO-releasing ability of metallorectangle 2 was further appraised using equine heart myoglobin assay.

An "All-in-One" Synthetic Strategy for Linear Metalla[4]Catenanes

One fascinating and challenging synthetic target in the field of mechanically interlocked molecules is the family of linear [4]catenanes, which are topologically identical to the logo of automobile maker Audi. Herein, we report an "all-in-one" synthetic strategy for the synthesis of linear metalla[n]catenanes (n = 2-4) by the coordination-driven self-assembly of Cp*Rh-based (Cp* = η⁵-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) organometallic rectangle π-donors and tetracationic organic cyclophane π-acceptors. We selected the pyrenyl group as the π-donor unit, leading to homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes and cyclic metalla[3]catenanes via π-stacking interactions. By taking advantage of the strong electrostatic interactions between π-donor units and π-acceptor units, a heterogeneous metalla[2]catenanes and linear metalla[3]catenanes, respectively, could be obtained by the simple stirring of homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes with a suitable tetracationic cyclophane. On this basis, this "all-in-one" synthetic strategy was further used to realize a quantitative one-step synthesis of a linear metalla[4]catenanes via the self-assembly of cyclic metalla[3]catenanes and tetracationic cyclophanes. All heterogeneous metalla[n]catenanes (n = 2-4) were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis, NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

Selective Construction of Trefoil knots and a Molecular Borromean Ring Induced by Steric Hindrance of Thioether Ligands

Two Cp*-Rh^III based trefoil knots were obtained in high yield under ambient conditions via the coordination-driven self-assembly of semi-rigid thioether dipyridyl ligand 1,4-bis[(pyridin-4-ylthio)methyl]benzene (L₁ ), ligand chloranilic acid (H₂ -CA) and 6,11-dihydroxytetracene-5,12-dione (H₂ -TtDo) with Cp*Rh^III metal corner units, respectively. Furthermore, using the bulkier 4,4'-{[(2,5-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)bis(methylene)]bis(sulfanediyl)}dipyridine (L₂ ) in the place of ligand L₁ in the construction process resulted in the formation of a teranuclear metallacycle and a template-free Borromean ring in high yields thanks to significantly altered intermolecular forces between the constituent ligands induced by the sterically-hindering methyl groups of L₂ , as demonstrated via a detailed X-ray crystallographic analysis and NMR spectroscopy.

Stimuli-Responsive Topological Transformation of a Molecular Borromean Ring via Controlled Oxidation of Thioether Moieties

A Cp*-Rh based D-shaped binuclear metallacycle and a template-free molecular Borromean ring (BR) were obtained in high yield using the semi-rigid thioether dipyridyl ligand 1,4-bis[(pyridin-4-ylthio)methyl]benzene (Bptmb). The topological transformation from a binuclear metallacycle and a BR to tetranuclear metallacycles was realized via the controlled oxidation of thioethers. The strategy used in this work can be regarded as a new form of stimuli-responsive post-synthesis modification (PSM).

Coordination-Driven Selective Formation of D2 Symmetric Octanuclear Organometallic Cages

The coordination-driven self-assembly of organometallic half-sandwich iridium(III)- and rhodium(III)-based building blocks with asymmetric ambidentate pyridyl-carboxylate ligands is described. Despite the potential for obtaining a statistical mixture of multiple products, D₂ symmetric octanuclear cages were formed selectively by taking advantage of the electronic effects emanating from the two types of chelating sites - (O,O') and (N,N') - on the tetranuclear building blocks. The metal sources and the lengths of bridging ligands influence the selectivity of the self-assembly. Experimental observations, supported by computational studies, suggest that the D₂ symmetric cages are the thermodynamically favored products. Overall, the results underline the importance of electronic effects on the selectivity of coordination-driven self-assembly, and demonstrate that asymmetric ambidentate ligands can be used to control the design of discrete supramolecular coordination complexes.

Bis(β-diketone)-based metallacycles with haloalkane-induced fluorescence enhancement

A series of metallarectangles 1-5 were synthesized by the selective combination of (p-cymene)Ru-corner, bis(β-diketone) arms and bifunctional pyridyl linkers. They exhibited a very rare phenomenon of haloalkane-induced fluorescence enhancement.

Postsynthetic Modification of Half-Sandwich Ruthenium Complexes by Mechanochemical Synthesis

A mild and environmentally friendly method to synthesize half-sandwich ruthenium complexes through the Wittig reaction between an aldehyde-tagged half-sandwich ruthenium complex and phosphorus ylide mechanochemically is reported herein. The mechanochemical synthesis of valuable half-sandwich ruthenium complexes resulted in a fast reaction, good yield with simple workup, and the avoidance of harsh reaction conditions and organic solvents. The synthesized half-sandwich ruthenium complexes exhibited high catalytic activity for transfer hydrogenation of ketones using 2-propanol as the hydrogen source and solvent. Density functional theory was carried out to propose a mechanism for the transfer hydrogenation process. The modeling suggests the importance of the labile p-cymene ligand in modulating the reactivity of the catalyst.
