In-layer inhomogeneity of molecular dynamics in quasi-liquid layers of ice

Quasi-liquid layers (QLLs) are present on the surface of ice and play a significant role in its distinctive chemical and physical properties. These layers exhibit considerable heterogeneity across different scales ranging from nanometers to millimeters. Although the formation of partially ice-like structures has been proposed, the molecular-level understanding of this heterogeneity remains unclear. Here, we examined the heterogeneity of molecular dynamics on QLLs based on molecular dynamics simulations and machine learning analysis of the simulation data. We demonstrated that the molecular dynamics of QLLs do not comprise a mixture of solid- and liquid water molecules. Rather, molecules having similar behaviors form dynamical domains that are associated with the dynamical heterogeneity of supercooled water. Nonetheless, molecules in the domains frequently switch their dynamical state. Furthermore, while there is no observable characteristic domain size, the long-range ordering strongly depends on the temperature and crystal face. Instead of a mixture of static solid- and liquid-like regions, our results indicate the presence of heterogeneous molecular dynamics in QLLs, which offers molecular-level insights into the surface properties of ice.

Fundamental, mechanism and development of hydration lubrication: From bio-inspiration to artificial manufacturing

Friction and lubrication are ubiquitous in all kinds of movements and play a vital role in the smooth operation of production machinery. Water is indispensable both in the lubrication systems of natural organisms and in hydration lubrication systems. There exists a high degree of similarity between these systems, which has driven the development of hydration lubrication from biomimetic to artificial manufacturing. In particular, significant advancements have been made in the understanding of the mechanisms of hydration lubrication over the past 30 years. This enhanced understanding has further stimulated the exploration of biomimetic inspiration from natural hydration lubrication systems, to develop novel artificial hydration lubrication systems that are cost-effective, easily transportable, and possess excellent capability. This review summarizes the recent experimental and theoretical advances in the understanding of hydration-lubrication processes. The entire paper is divided into three parts. Firstly, surface interactions relevant to hydration lubrication are discussed, encompassing topics such as hydrogen bonding, hydration layer, electric double layer force, hydration force, and Stribeck curve. The second part begins with an introduction to articular cartilage in biomaterial lubrication, discussing its compositional structure and lubrication mechanisms. Subsequently, three major categories of bio-inspired artificial manufacturing lubricating material systems are presented, including hydrogels, polymer brushes (e.g., neutral, positive, negative and zwitterionic brushes), hydration lubricant additives (e.g., nano-particles, polymers, ionic liquids), and their related lubrication mechanism is also described. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for hydration lubrication research and materials development are presented.

Self-diffusion and shear viscosity for the TIP4P/Ice water model

With an ever-increasing interest in water properties, many intermolecular force fields have been proposed to describe the behavior of water. Unfortunately, good models for liquid water usually cannot provide simultaneously an accurate melting point for ice. For this reason, the TIP4P/Ice model was developed for targeting the melting point and has become the preferred choice for simulating ice at coexistence. Unfortunately, available data for its dynamic properties in the liquid state are scarce. Therefore, we demonstrate a series of simulations aimed at the calculation of transport coefficients for the TIP4P/Ice model over a large range of thermodynamic conditions, ranging from T = 245 K to T = 350 K, for the temperature, and from p = 0 to p = 500 MPa, for the pressure. We have found that the self-diffusion (shear viscosity) exhibits smaller (increased) values than TIP4P/2005 and experiments. However, rescaling the temperature with respect to the triple point temperature, as in a corresponding states plot, we find that TIP4P/Ice compares very well with TIP4P/2005 and experiment. Such observations allow us to infer that despite the different original purposes of these two models examined here, one can benefit from a vast number of reports regarding the behavior of transport coefficients for the TIP4P/2005 model and utilize them following the routine described in this paper.

Mass Accommodation of Water on Ice at Environmentally Relevant Temperatures: Insights from Fast Scanning Calorimetry

Using a conceptually simple, quasi-adiabatic, fast scanning calorimetry technique, we have investigated the sublimation kinetics of ice films with thicknesses ranging from 14 to 400 nm at environmentally relevant temperatures, between 223 and 268 K. The technique enables accurate determination of ice sublimation rates into vacuum under the conditions of free molecular flow during rapid yet quasistatic heating. The measured sublimation fluxes yield the vapor pressure of the ice samples, which is indistinguishable from that derived from experiments under near-equilibrium conditions. Thus, in agreement with the microscopic reversibility principle, we conclude that the mass accommodation coefficient of water by ice is unity and temperature-independent in the temperature range of the studies. We discuss these findings in the context of current computational and theoretical research into the chemistry and physics of aqueous interfaces.

Effect of sodium chloride adsorption on the surface premelting of ice

We characterise the structural properties of the quasi-liquid layer (QLL) at two low-index ice surfaces in the presence of sodium chloride (Na⁺/Cl^-) ions by molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the presence of a high surface density of Na⁺/Cl^- pairs changes the surface melting behaviour from step-wise to gradual melting. The ions lead to an overall increase of the thickness and the disorder of the QLL, and to a low-temperature roughening transition of the air-ice interface. The local molecular structure of the QLL is similar to that of liquid water, and the differences between the basal and primary prismatic surface are attenuated by the presence of Na⁺/Cl^- pairs. These changes modify the crystal growth rates of different facets and the solvation environment at the surface of sea-water ice with a potential impact on light scattering and environmental chemical reactions.

Intermolecular forces at ice and water interfaces: premelting, surface freezing and regelation

Using Lifshitz theory we assess the role of van der Waals forces at interfaces of ice and water. The results are combined with measured structural forces from computer simulations to develop a quantitative model of the surface free energy of premelting films. This input is employed within the framework of wetting theory and allows us to predict qualitatively the behavior of quasi-liquid layer thickness as a function of ambient conditions. Our results emphasize the significance of vapor pressure. The ice vapor interface is shown to exhibit only incomplete premelting, but the situation can shift to a state of complete surface melting above water saturation. The results obtained serve also to assess the role of subsurface freezing at the water-vapor interface, and we show that intermolecular forces favor subsurface ice nucleation only in conditions of water undersaturation. We show ice regelation at ambient pressure may be explained as a process of capillary freezing, without the need to invoke the action of bulk pressure melting. Our results for van der Waals forces are exploited in order to gauge dispersion interactions in empirical point charge models of water.

Premelting layer during ice growth: role of clusters

The premelting layer plays an important role in ice growth, but there is a significant gap in our knowledge between the atomistic premelting surface structure and the macroscopic growth mechanism. In this work, using large-scale molecular dynamics simulation, we reveal the existence of clusters on the premelting surface, as an intermediate feature bridging the gap. We show the spontaneous formation and evolution of clusters, and they form a stable distribution determined by the growth rate. We demonstrate how this stable distribution is related to the growth mode of ice, connected by the growth of clusters. We come to a bilayer-by-bilayer growth mode at simulation-reachable high growth rates, but another mechanism, namely "cluster stacking", is speculated to exist at lower growth rates. This work builds a connection between the microscopic structure of the premelting layer and the macroscopic growth of ice, making a step forward toward the full understanding of premelting and ice growth.

Thiocyanate Ions Form Antiparallel Populations at the Concentrated Electrolyte/Charged Surfactant Interface

Anions play significant roles in the separation of lanthanides and actinides. The molecular-scale details of how these anions behave at aqueous interfaces are not well understood, especially at high ionic strengths. Here, we describe the interfacial structure of thiocyanate anions at a soft charged interface up to 5 M bulk concentration with combined classical and phase-sensitive vibrational sum frequency generation (PS-VSFG) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. At low concentrations thiocyanate ions are mostly oriented with their sulfur end pointing toward the charged surfactants. The VSFG signal reaches a plateau at around 100 mM bulk concentration, followed by significant changes above 1 M. At high concentrations a new thiocyanate population emerges with their sulfur end pointing toward the bulk liquid. The -CN stretch frequency is different for up and down oriented SCN^- ions, indicating different coordination environments. These results provide key molecular-level insights for the interfacial behavior of complex anions in highly concentrated solutions.

Low- and High-Density Unknown Waters at Ice-Water Interfaces

Experimental confirmation of liquid polymorphs of water, high-density liquid (HDL) and low-density liquid (LDL), is desired for understanding not only the liquid state of matter but also the origin of the mysterious properties of water. However, this remains challenging because the liquid-liquid critical point of water lies in experimentally inaccessible supercooling conditions known as "no man's land". Here, we show by in situ optical microscopy that droplets and layers of low- and high-density unknown waters (LDUW and HDUW) appear macroscopically depending upon ice polymorphs at non-equilibrium interfaces between water and ices under experimentally accessible (de)pressurization conditions. These unknown waters were found to have characteristic velocities (about 20 and 100 m/s for LDUW and HDUW, respectively) different from water (about 40 m/s) and quasi-liquid layers (QLLs) (about 2 and 0.2 m/s for droplet and layer forms of QLLs, respectively). Our discoveries provide insight on liquid polymorphism of water.

Scratch-Healing Behavior of Ice by Local Sublimation and Condensation

We show that the surface of ice is scratch healing: micrometer-deep scratches in the ice surface spontaneously disappear by thermal relaxation on the time scale of roughly an hour. Following the dynamics and comparing it to different mass transfer mechanisms, we find that sublimation from and condensation onto the ice surface is the dominant scratch-healing mechanism. The scratch-healing kinetics shows a strong temperature dependence, following an Arrhenius behavior with an activation energy of ΔE = 58.6 ± 4.6 kJ/mol, agreeing with the proposed sublimation mechanism and at odds with surface diffusion or fluid flow or evaporation-condensation from a quasi-liquid layer.

Structure of the Water Molecule Layer between Ice and Amorphous/Crystalline Surfaces Based on Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The structure of the water layer between the ice interface and the hydroxylated amorphous/crystalline silica surfaces was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that the density profile in the direction perpendicular to the surface has two density peaks in the water layer at the ice-silica interface, which are affected by the silanol group density on the wall and the degree of supercooling in the system. In the two density peaks, the one facing the ice interface side has the same structure as the ice crystal, while the other density peak facing the silica surface has an icelike structure. In the solidification process, the ice and icelike structures in the layer progress more on the amorphous silica surface where the density of the silanol groups is low. The relationship between the ice crystallization and the thickness of the layer has been studied in detail; the lower the temperature, the more the ice crystallization progresses and the thinner the layer becomes.

Water Mobility in the Interfacial Liquid Layer of Ice/Clay Nanocomposites

At solid/ice interfaces, a premelting layer is formed at temperatures below the melting point of bulk water. However, the structural and dynamic properties within the premelting layer have been a topic of intense debate. Herein, we determined the translational diffusion coefficient Dt of water in ice/clay nanocomposites serving as model systems for permafrost by quasi-elastic neutron scattering. Below the bulk melting point, a rapid decrease of Dt is found for charged hydrophilic vermiculite, uncharged hydrophilic kaolin, and more hydrophobic talc, reaching plateau values below -4 °C. At this temperature, Dt in the premelting layer is reduced up to a factor of two compared to supercooled bulk water. Adjacent to charged vermiculite the lowest water mobility was observed, followed by kaolin and the more hydrophobic talc. Results are explained by the intermolecular water interactions with different clay surfaces and interfacial segregation of the low-density liquid water (LDL) component.

Unique phase behavior of a room-temperature ionic liquid, trimethylpropylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide: surface melting and its crystallization

The phase behavior of a representative ammonium-based ionic liquid, trimethylpropylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide ([N1113][FSA]), was investigated using a laboratory-made differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The apparatus possesses extremely high sensitivities with stability of ±2 nW in thermal flux and ±1 mK in temperature and a very slow scanning rate of 0.001 mK s-1 in the slowest scanning speed. Besides two ordinary signals from crystallization and melting, a very weak exothermic peak, 1/1000 times that of the main crystallization peak, was observed during the cooling process. The peak was assigned to the crystallization of the surface-melting layer. Both the normal and novel crystallizations occurred during the structural relaxation process. The thickness of the surface-melting layer was estimated to be roughly 70-200 nm. To study the details of the melting processes, DSC experiments were performed with very slow scanning rates (0.02 and 0.03 mK s-1). Two novel endothermic peaks were found in the usual melting trace for the sample with the surface crystallization, and no unusual peaks were observed in the sample without the surface crystallization. We believe that the structure of the surface crystallization phase is different from that of the bulk crystalline phase.

High-Density Liquid Water at a Water-Ice Interface

Because ice surfaces catalyze various key chemical reactions impacting nature and human life, the structure and dynamics of interfacial layers between water vapor and ice have been extensively debated with attention to the quasi-liquid layer. Other interfaces between liquid water and ice remain relatively underexplored, despite their importance and abundance on the Earth and icy extraterrestrial bodies. By in situ optical microscopy, we found that a high-density liquid layer, distinguishable from bulk water, formed at the interface between water and high-pressure ice III or VI, when they were grown or melted in a sapphire anvil cell. The liquid layer showed a bicontinuous pattern, indicating that immiscible waters with distinct structures were separated on the interfaces in a similar manner to liquid-liquid phase separation through spinodal decomposition. Our observations not only provide a novel opportunity to explore ice surfaces but also give insight into the two kinds of structured water.

Molecular Structure and Modeling of Water-Air and Ice-Air Interfaces Monitored by Sum-Frequency Generation

From a glass of water to glaciers in Antarctica, water-air and ice-air interfaces are abundant on Earth. Molecular-level structure and dynamics at these interfaces are key for understanding many chemical/physical/atmospheric processes including the slipperiness of ice surfaces, the surface tension of water, and evaporation/sublimation of water. Sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy is a powerful tool to probe the molecular-level structure of these interfaces because SFG can specifically probe the topmost interfacial water molecules separately from the bulk and is sensitive to molecular conformation. Nevertheless, experimental SFG has several limitations. For example, SFG cannot provide information on the depth of the interface and how the orientation of the molecules varies with distance from the surface. By combining the SFG spectroscopy with simulation techniques, one can directly compare the experimental data with the simulated SFG spectra, allowing us to unveil the molecular-level structure of water-air and ice-air interfaces. Here, we present an overview of the different simulation protocols available for SFG spectra calculations. We systematically compare the SFG spectra computed with different approaches, revealing the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods. Furthermore, we account for the findings through combined SFG experiments and simulations and provide future challenges for SFG experiments and simulations at different aqueous interfaces.

Rounded Layering Transitions on the Surface of Ice

Understanding the wetting properties of premelting films requires knowledge of the film's equation of state, which is not usually available. Here we calculate the disjoining pressure curve of premelting films and perform a detailed thermodynamic characterization of premelting behavior on ice. Analysis of the density profiles reveals the signature of weak layering phenomena, from one to two and from two to three water molecular layers. However, disjoining pressure curves, which closely follow expectations from a renormalized mean field liquid state theory, show that there are no layering phase transitions in the thermodynamic sense along the sublimation line. Instead, we find that transitions at mean field level are rounded due to capillary wave fluctuations. We see signatures that true first order layering transitions could arise at low temperatures, for pressures between the metastable line of water-vapor coexistence and the sublimation line. The extrapolation of the disjoining pressure curve above water-vapor saturation displays a true first order phase transition from a thin to a thick film consistent with experimental observations.

Appearance and Disappearance of Quasi-Liquid Layers on Ice Crystals in the Presence of Nitric Acid Gas

The surfaces of ice crystals near the melting point are covered with thin liquid water layers, called quasi-liquid layers (QLLs), which play crucial roles in various chemical reactions in nature. So far, there have been many spectroscopic studies of such chemical reactions on ice surfaces, however, revealing the effects of atmospheric gases on ice surfaces remains an experimental challenge. In this study, we chose HNO3 as a model atmospheric gas, and directly observed the ice basal faces by advanced optical microscopy under partial pressure of HNO3 (~10−4 Pa), relevant to those found in the atmosphere. We found that droplets (HNO3-QLLs) appeared on ice surfaces at temperatures ranging from −0.9 to −0.2 °C with an increase in temperature, and that they disappeared at temperatures ranging from −0.6 to −1.3 °C with decreasing temperature. We also found that the size of the HNO3-QLLs decreased immediately after we started reducing the temperature. From the changes in size and the liquid–solid phase diagram of the HNO3-H2O binary system, we concluded that the HNO3-QLLs did not consist of pure water, but rather aqueous HNO3 solutions, and that the temperature and HNO3 concentration of the HNO3-QLLs also coincided with those along a liquidus line.

Structure and Dynamics of Confined Liquids: Challenges and Perspectives for the X-ray Surface Forces Apparatus

The molecular-scale structure and dynamics of confined liquids has increasingly gained relevance for applications in nanotechnology. Thus, a detailed knowledge of the structure of confined liquids on molecular length scales is of great interest for fundamental and applied sciences. To study confined structures under dynamic conditions, we constructed an in situ X-ray surface forces apparatus (X-SFA). This novel device can create a precisely controlled slit-pore confinement down to dimensions on the 10 nm scale by using a cylinder-on-flat geometry for the first time. Complementary structural information can be obtained by simultaneous force measurements and X-ray scattering experiments. The in-plane structure of liquids parallel to the slit pore and density profiles perpendicular to the confining interfaces are studied by X-ray scattering and reflectivity. The normal load between the opposing interfaces can be modulated to study the structural dynamics of confined liquids. The confinement gap distance is tracked simultaneously with nanometer precision by analyzing optical interference fringes of equal chromatic order. Relaxation processes can be studied by driving the system out of equilibrium by shear stress or compression/decompression cycles of the slit pore. The capability of the new device is demonstrated on the liquid crystal 4'-octyl-4-cyano-biphenyl (8CB) in its smectic A (SmA) mesophase. Its molecular-scale structure and orientation confined in 100 nm to 1.7 μm slit pores was studied under static and dynamic nonequilibrium conditions.

Unveiling Heterogeneity of Interfacial Water through the Water Bending Mode

The water bending mode provides a powerful probe of the microscopic structure of bulk aqueous systems because its frequency and spectral line shape are responsive to the intermolecular interactions. Furthermore, interpreting the bending mode response is straightforward, as the intramolecular vibrational coupling is absent. Nevertheless, bending mode has not been used for probing the interfacial water structure, as it has been yet argued that the signal is dominated by bulk effects. Here, through the sum-frequency generation measurement of the water bending mode at the water/air and water/charged lipid interfaces, we demonstrate that the bending mode signal is dominated not by the bulk but by the interface. Subsequently, we disentangle the hydrogen-bonding of water at the water/air interface using the bending mode frequency distribution and find distinct interfacial hydrogen-bonded structures, which can be directly related to the interfacial organization of water. The bending mode thus provides an excellent probe of aqueous interfacial structure.
