Abstract
Noble metal nanostructures and photonic crystals (PhCs) have been widely investigated as substrates for constructing surface enhanced electrochemiluminescence (SE-ECL) biosensors. However, their applications are hindered by the limited enhancement intensity of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and an incomplete mechanism for the photonic enhancement effect. Hence, developing a novel SE-ECL strategy with better signal enhanced capability and enriching our understanding of the intrinsic mechanisms for efficient bioanalysis is extremely urgent. Here, a synergistic SE-ECL strategy was developed for the sensitive determination of prostate specific antigen (PSA) protein. The randomly arranged polystyrene (r-PS) spheres and PS PhC arrays were applied to enhance the ECL emission of cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) and the results suggested that the PhC arrays displayed superior intensity (0.22) than the r-PS interface (0.10). Au nanoparticles (NPs) were introduced onto the two kinds of surfaces and further boosted the ECL intensity. According to the ECL measurements, Au NPs modified at the r-PS surface exhibited only a slight increase (0.13), while the PhC arrays showed approximately 5-fold enhancement (0.92), benefiting from the synergistic enhancement. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation indicated that the ECL enhancement was ascribed to the coupled electromagnetic (EM) field at the surfaces of PS PhCs and Au NPs. The SE-ECL could achieve a detection range from 1 pg/mL to 1 μg/mL with a detection limit of 0.41 pg/mL (S/N = 3). This study provides the first combination of PhC arrays and metal surface plasmon nanostructure for the synergetic enhancement of SE-ECL systems. It opens a new avenue for the rational design of advanced ECL biosensors and shows great perspective for clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
In this work, a novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor has been developed to detect the miRNA-522 in the tumor tissues of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients. Au NPs/Zn MOF heterostructure was obtained by in situ growth and used as novel luminescence probe. Firstly, zinc-metal organic framework nanosheets (Zn MOF NSs) were synthesized with Zn2+ as the central metal ion and 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH2-BDC) as the ligand. 2D MOF nanosheets with ultra-thin layered structure and relatively large specific surface areas can enhance the catalytic activity in the ECL generation. Furthermore, the electron transfer capacity and the electrochemical active surface area of MOF were greatly improved by the growth of Au NPs. Therefore, Au NPs/Zn MOF heterostructure showed the significant electrochemical activity in the sensing process. In addition, the magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2@Au microspheres were used as capture units in the magnetic separation step. The magnetic spheres with hairpin aptamer H1 can capture target gene. Then the captured miRNA-522 triggered the target catalyzed hairpin assembly (CHA) sensing process and linked Au NPs/Zn MOF heterostructure. The concentration of miRNA-522 can be quantified by the ECL signal enhancement of the Au NPs/Zn MOF heterostructure. Due to the high catalytic activity of Au NPs/Zn MOF heterostructure and their unique structural and electrochemical properties, the prepared ECL sensor achieved high-sensitive detection of miRNA-522 in the range of 1 fM to 0.1 nM with the detection limit of 0.3 fM. This strategy can provide a potential alternative for miRNA detection in medical research and clinical diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer.

Abstract
In this study, a novel surface plasmon-coupled electrochemiluminescence (SPC-ECL) biosensor was developed based on bismuth nano-nest and Ti3CN quantum dots (Ti3CN QDs). First, MXene derivative QDs (Ti3CN QDs) with excellent luminescence performance were prepared as the ECL luminescent. The N doping in Ti3CN QDs can effectively improve the luminescence performance and catalytic activity. Therefore, the luminescence performance of QDs has been effectively improved. Furthermore, the bismuth nano-nest structure with a strong localized surface plasmon resonance effect has been designed as the sensing interface via the electrochemical deposition method. It was worth noticed that the morphology of bismuth nanomaterials can be controlled effectively on the electrode surface by the step potential method. Due to the abundant surface plasmon hot spots generated between the bismuth nano-nests, the isotropic ECL signal of Ti3CN QDs can be not only significantly enhanced by 5.8 times but also converted into polarized emission. Finally, the bismuth nano-nest/Ti3CN QD-based SPC-ECL sensor was used to quantify miRNA-421 in the range of 1 fM to 10 nM. The biosensor has been successfully used for miRNA in ascites samples from gastric cancer patients, which indicated that the SPC-ECL sensor developed in this study has great potential for clinical analysis.

Abstract
Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) analysis has become a powerful tool in recent biomarker detection and clinic diagnosis due to its high sensitivity and broad linear range. To improve the analytical performance of ECL biosensors, various advanced nanomaterials have been introduced to regulate the ECL signal such as graphene, gold nanomaterials, and quantum dots. Among these nanomaterials, some plasmonic nanostructures play important roles in the fabrication of ECL biosensors. The plasmon effect for the ECL signal includes ECL quenching by resonant energy transfer, ECL enhancement by surface plasmon resonance enhancement, and a change in the polarized angle of ECL emission. The influence can be regulated by the distance between ECL emitters and plasmonic materials, and the characteristics of polarization angle-dependent surface plasmon coupling. This paper outlines the recent advances of plasmonic based ECL biosensors involving various plasmonic materials including noble metals and semiconductor nanomaterials. The detection targets in these biosensors range from small molecules, proteins, nucleic acids, and cells thanks to the plasmonic effect. In addition to ECL biosensors, ECL microscopy analysis with plasmonic materials is also highlighted because of the enhanced ECL image quality by the plasmonic effect. Finally, the future opportunities and challenges are discussed if more plasmonic effects are introduced into the ECL realm.

Abstract
Considering the limitations associated with existing methods for the detection of trace amounts of trichlorfon, this paper proposes a novel molecularly imprinted electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for the detection of trichlorfon by utilizing the double enhancement effect of trichlorfon and Ag nanoparticles supported by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs/Ag NPs) in a luminol-H2O2 ECL system. Here, trichlorfon was electropolymerized on the surface of the MWCNT/Ag NP-modified gold nanoelectrode with o-phenylenediamine to prepare the molecularly imprinted polymer-based sensor. After eluting the trichlorfon, imprinted holes for the identification of trichlorfon were retained on the sensor, which were used as signal switches to obtain different ECL intensities through the adsorption of different concentrations of trichlorfon. The ECL signal of the sensitized luminol-H2O2 was doubly enhanced by the MWCNTs/Ag and trichlorfon, improving the sensitivity of the sensor. The trichlorfon concentration was positively correlated with the enhanced ECL intensity of the sensor in the range 5.0 × 10-8-5.0 × 10-11 mol L-1, and the detection limit of trichlorfon was 3.9 × 10-12 mol L-1. Moreover, the proposed sensor was successfully applied to the detection of trichlorfon residues in real samples, and the recovery ranged between 91.8 and 109%. A molecularly imprinted electrochemiluminescence sensor for trichlorfon detection by utilizing the double enhancement effect of trichlorfon and Ag nanoparticles supported by multi-walled carbon nanotubes in a luminol-H2O2 ECL system. The dual enhancement of the ECL signal improved the sensitivity of the sensor.

Abstract
Doping plays a crucial role in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) due to the followings: (1) Modulation of electronic structure, alteration of the surface state of nanoparticles (NPs), providing effective protection from the surrounding environment, thereby leading to ECL emitters with exceptional properties including tunable spectra, high luminescence efficiency, low excitation potential, and good stability. (2) Employment of doped NPs as promising coreactant alternatives due to the presence of functional groups such as amines induced by NP doping. (3) Serving as novel co-reaction accelerators (CRAs) for ECL through doping induced high catalytic properties. (4) Behaving as excellent carriers to load ECL emitters, recognition elements, and catalysts due to doping-induced larger surface area, higher conductivity and better biocompatibility of NPs. As a consequence, doped NPs have aroused broad interest and found wide applications in various ECL sensing platforms. In this review, the current promising improvements, concepts, and excellent applications of doped NPs for ECL biosensing are addressed. We aim to bring to light the physicochemical characteristics of various doped NPs that endow them with appealing ECL performance, leading to diverse applications in biosensing.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) have many advantages, such as tunable photoluminescence, large two-photon absorption cross-sections, easy functionalization, low toxicity, chemical inertness, good dispersion, and biocompatibility. Halogen doping further improves the optical and physicochemical properties of CDs, extending their applications in fluorescence sensors, biomedicine, photocatalysis, anti-counterfeiting encryption, and light-emitting diodes. This review briefly describes the preparation of CDs via the “top-down” and “bottom-up” approaches and discusses the preparation methods and applications of halogen (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine)-doped CDs. The main challenges of CDs in the future are the elucidation of the luminescence mechanism, fine doping with elements (proportion, position, etc.), and their incorporation in practical devices.

Abstract
Since the content levels of biomarkers at the early stage of many diseases are generally lower than the detection threshold concentration, achieving ultrasensitive and accurate detection of these biomarkers is still one of the major goals in bio-analysis. To achieve ultrasensitive and reliable bioassay, it requires developing highly sensitive biosensors. Among all kinds of biosensors, electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) based biosensors have attracted enormous attention due to their excellent properties. In order to improve the performance of ECL biosensors, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have been widely utilized as signal amplification tags. The introduction of Au NPs could dramatically enhance the performance of the constructed ECL biosensors via diverse ways such as electrode modification material, efficient energy acceptor in ECL resonant energy transfer (ECL-RET), reaction catalyst, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) enhancer, and as nanocarrier. Herein, we summarize recent developments and progress of ECL biosensors based on Au NPs signal amplification strategies. We will cover ECL applications of Au NPs as a signal amplification tag in the detection of proteins, metal ions, nucleic acids, small molecules, living cells, exosomes, and cell imaging. Finally, brief summary and future outlooks of this field will be presented.

Abstract
In this work, a new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) platform was constructed for detecting the prostate cancer marker microRNA-141 (miRNA-141) on a constant resistor-integrated closed bipolar electrode (BPE). It consisted of two reservoirs and a constant resistor, and both ends were connected to the anode of the driving electrode and the cathode of BPE. The cathode of BPE was modified with boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs), and the anode reservoir was the [Ru(bpy)3](PF6)2/TPrA system. After introducing a certain amount of hairpin DNA 3 (H3) and ferrocene-labeled single-stranded DNA (Fc-ssDNA) on the surface of the BNQDs, the ECL emission signal of the BNQDs was difficult to be observed by the naked eye, while [Ru(bpy)3](PF6)2 emitted a strong and visible ECL signal. In the presence of the target, bipedal DNA assembled by catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) took away the Fc-ssDNA and the ECL intensity of the BNQDs was enlarged, and as the concentration of miRNA-141 increased to the cutoff value, yellow-green light was visible by the naked eye. Meanwhile, the red emission signal of [Ru(bpy)3](PF6)2/TPrA became weakened. Thus, an ultrasensitive "color switch" ECL biosensor for detection of miRNA-141 was constructed and endowed with a wide linear range from 10-17 to 10-7 M and a detection limit of 10-17 M (S/N = 3). This study provides the potential for investigating portable devices in the detection of low-concentration nucleic acids.

Abstract
Nowadays, continuous efforts have been devoted to searching highly efficient electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emitters for applications in clinical diagnosis and food safety. In this work, triazinyl-based hydrogen bond organic frameworks (Tr-HOFs) were synthesized by N···H hydrogen bond self-assembly aggregation, where 6,6'-(1,4-phenylene)bis(1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) (phenyDAT) was prepared via the cyclization reaction and behaved as a novel ligand. Impressively, the resulting Tr-HOFs showed strong ECL responses with highly enhanced ECL efficiency (21.3%) relative to the Ru(bpy)32+ standard, while phenyDAT hardly showed any ECL emission in aqueous phase. The Tr-HOFs innovatively worked as a new ECL luminophore to construct a label-free biosensor for assay of kanamycin (Kana). Specifically, the ECL response greatly weakened upon assembly of captured DNA with ferrocene (cDNA-Fc) onto the Tr-HOFs-modified electrode, while the ECL signals were adversely recovered by releasing linked DNA (L-DNA) from double-stranded DNA (dsDNA, hybridization of aptamer DNA (aptDNA) with L-DNA) due to the specific recognition of Kana with the aptDNA combined by the linkage of L-DNA and cDNA-Fc on the electrode. The as-built sensor showed a broadened linear range (1 nM-10 μM) and a limit of detection (LOD) down to 0.28 nM, which also displayed satisfactory results in the analysis of Kana in the milk and diluted human serum samples. This work offers a novel pathway to design an ECL emitter with organic molecules, holding great promise in biomedical analysis and food detection.

Abstract
This work focused on the construction of a nanomaterial-patterned structure for high-resolved ECL signal modulation. Due to the surface coupling effect, the different shapes and distribution states of surface plasmonic nanomaterials not only affect the luminescence intensity enhancement but also decide the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) polarization characteristics. Herein, tin disulfide quantum dots were synthesized via a solvothermal method as ECL emitters. Compared with other nanostructures, Au nanotriangle (Au NT) displayed both the localized surface plasmon resonance electromagnetic enhancement effect and the tip amplification effect, which had significant hot spot regions at three sharp tips. Therefore, self-assembled Au NT-based patterned structures with high density and uniform hot spots were constructed as ideal surface plasmonic materials. More importantly, the distribution states of the hot spots affect the polarization characteristics of ECL, resulting in directional ECL emission at different angles. As a result, a polarization-resolved ECL biosensor was designed to detect miRNA 221. Moreover, this polarization-resolved biosensor achieved good quantitative detection in the linear range of 1 fM to 1 nM and showed satisfactory results in the analysis of the triple-negative breast cancer patients' serum.

Abstract
In this work, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are utilized as effective ECL coreactant accelerator to enhance the ECL responses of N-(aminobutyl)-N-(ethylisoluminol) (ABEI). Zn-based MOFs (MOF-Zn-1) were prepared by chelating Zn ions with melamine and thiophenedicarboxylic acid (TPDA), which observably accelerated the electrocatalytic oxidation of tripropylamine (TPA). Then, ABEI-MOF-Zn-1 as a high-performance ECL emitter was synthesized via an amide reaction between ABEI and mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) modified MOF-Zn-1. Strikingly, the ABEI-MOF-Zn-1 showed the 18-fold increase in the ECL signals relative to pure ABEI by using TPA as a coreactant. Moreover, ferrocene (Fc) as a quencher was first linked with capture DNA (cDNA), and then used to modify the ABEI-MOF-Zn-1, thereby constructing a label-free ECL biosensor. After the linkage between chloramphenicol (CAP) and aptamer DNA (aptDNA), the ECL response was definitely recovered by releasing L-DNA from double-stranded DNA (dsDNA, hybridization of aptDNA and L-DNA). The resultant sensor showed a wide linear range of 1.00 nM-0.10 mM (R2 = 0.99) and a low limit of detection (LOD) down to 0.11 nM for detecting CAP. This work developed a novel pattern to design an efficient ECL enhanced emitter, coupled by expanding its potential applications in clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
In this article, we developed a novel ECL ratiometry on a closed bipolar electrode (BPE) for the sensitively and accurately detection of miRNA-21. High quantum yield and low toxicity BNQDs was synthesized and coated at BPE cathode as an ECL emitter, while the anode of BPE was calibrated via another ECL material, Ir(df-ppy)2(pic) (Firpic). The electron neutrality at both ends of the BPE electrically coupled the reactions on each pole of the BPE. Therefore, one electrochemical sensing reaction could be quantified at one end of the BPE. By the hybridization of target miRNA-21 and hairpin, the glucose blocked in MSNs by the hairpin was released and reacted with glucose oxidase (GOD) to generate H2O2, thereby reducing the ECL signal of the cathode BNQDs/K2S2O8 system and promoting ECL signal of anode Firpic/TPrA. Further, the G-quadruplex formed by unreacted hairpin bases consumed H2O2, which not only recovered the ECL of BNQDs, but also further improved the ECL emission of Firpic. Therefore, the concentration of miRNA-21 could be measured by the ECL ratio of BNQDs and Firpic. The data showed that the detection limit was 10-15 M (S/N = 3) with the linear range of 10-15 M to 10-9 M. The strategy of the BPE-ECL ratio method based on BNQDs showed a good prospect in clinical application.

Abstract
A novel multiplex electrochemiluminescence (ECL) polarization assay was developed to detect breast cancer-related genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 simultaneously based on the polarization characteristics of surface plasmon-coupled electrochemiluminescence (SPC-ECL). In this work, boron nitride quantum dots (BN QDs) were used as ECL emitters, and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and gold-coated silver nanoparticles (Ag@Au NPs) were employed as surface plasmon materials. The surface plasmon coupling resonance of different metal NPs not only enhanced the ECL intensity but also converted the isotropic emission into directional emission. This study revealed the relation between the structure of metal nanomaterials and SPC-ECL, and a high polarization-resolved sensing system was designed to detect multitarget DNA from 100 aM to 1 nM simultaneously. Polarization-based multiple ECL analysis has broad prospects in related cancer diagnosis and treatment evaluation.

Abstract
Boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) have gained increasing attention for their versatile fluorescent, optoelectronic, chemical, and biochemical properties. During the past few years, significant progress has been demonstrated, started from theoretical modeling to actual application. Many interesting properties and applications have been reported, such as excitation-dependent emission (and, in some cases, non-excitation dependent), chemical functionalization, bioimaging, phototherapy, photocatalysis, chemical, and biological sensing. An overview of this early-stage research development of BNQDs is presented in this article. We have prepared un-bias assessments on various synthesis methods, property analysis, and applications of BNQDs here, and provided our perspective on the development of these emerging nanomaterials for years to come.

Abstract
Bismuth sulfide quantum dots (Bi2S3 QDs), which have excellent optical and thermoelectric properties, represent a green and non-toxic semiconductor material that has been widely used in catalysis and photoelectric conversion devices. At present, research on this material has gradually expanded into the biological field. Herein, the biomineralization method mediated by bovine serum albumin (BSA) was utilized to synthesize Bi2S3 QDs with monodispersity, excellent colloidal stability, and good biocompatibility. This is the first study on the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) characteristics of Bi2S3 QDs and related ECL mechanisms in detail. In addition, on the basis of Bi2S3 QDs, an ECL immunosensor was used for the ultrasensitive measurement of cyclin D1 (CCND1). The composite material, namely Au@Cu-Bi2S3 QDs was used as a high-sensitivity ECL probe, in which AuNPs were connected with Bi2S3 QDs through a copper(ii) ion bridge. PDA-AgNPs made of dopamine (DA) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were utilized as a carrier for fixing the primary antibody (Ab1), ultimately presenting a relatively wide detection range of 10 fg mL-1-1 μg mL-1. Moreover, quite a low detection limit (6.34 fg mL-1) was also obtained for an assay of CCND1. Results indicated that the immunosensor can provide a potential platform with fine stability and creditable reproducibility for clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
The effects of photobleaching on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) was investigated for the first time. The plasma membrane of Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells was labeled with a [Ru(bpy)3 ]2+ derivative. Selected regions of the fixed cells were photobleached using the confocal mode with sequential stepwise illumination or cumulatively and they were imaged by both ECL and photoluminescence (PL). ECL was generated with a model sacrificial coreactant, tri-n-propylamine. ECL microscopy of the photobleached regions shows lower ECL emission. We demonstrate a linear correlation between the ECL decrease and the PL loss due to the photobleaching of the labels immobilized on the CHO membranes. The presented strategy provides valuable information on the fundamentals of the ECL excited state and opens new opportunities for exploring cellular membranes by combining ECL microscopy with photobleaching techniques such as fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) or fluorescence loss in photobleaching (FLIP) methods.
