Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy Meets Optical Microscopy: Probing the Local Paths of Charge Transfer Operando in Booster-Microparticles for Flow Batteries

Understanding the oxidation/reduction dynamics of secondary microparticles formed from agglomerated nanoscale primary particles is crucial for advancing electrochemical energy storage technologies. In this study, the behavior of individual copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) microparticles is explored at both global and local scales combining scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), for electrochemical interrogation of a single, but global-scale microparticle, and optical microscopy monitoring to obtain a higher resolution dynamic image of the local electrochemistry within the same particle. Chronoamperometric experiments unveil a multistep oxidation/reduction process with varying dynamics. On the one hand, the global SECM analysis enables quantifying the charge transfer as well as its dynamics at the single microparticle level during the oxidation/reduction cycles by a redox mediator in solution. These conditions allow mimicking the charge storage processes in these particles when they are used as solid boosters in redox flow batteries. On the other hand, optical imaging with sub-particle resolution allows the mapping of local conversion rates and state-of-charge within individual CuHCF particles. These maps reveal that regions of different material loadings exhibit varying charge storage capacities and conversion rates. The findings highlight the significance of porous nanostructures and provide valuable insights for designing more efficient energy storage materials.

Sixty years of electrochemical optical spectroscopy: a retrospective

Sixty years ago, Reddy, Devanatan, and Bockris performed the first in situ electrochemical ellipsometry experiment, which ushered in a new era in the study of electrochemistry, using optical spectroscopy. After six decades of development, electrochemical optical spectroscopy, particularly electrochemical vibrational spectroscopy, has advanced from a phase of immaturity with few methods and limited applications to a phase of maturity with excellent substrate generality and significantly improved resolutions. Here, we divide the development of electrochemical optical spectroscopy into four phases, focusing on the proof-of-concept of different electrochemical optical spectroscopy studies, the emergence of plasmonic enhancement-based electrochemical optical spectroscopic (in particular vibrational spectroscopic) methods, the realization of electrochemical vibrational spectroscopy on well-defined surfaces, and the efforts to achieve operando spectroelectrochemical applications. Finally, we discuss the future development trend of electrochemical optical spectroscopy, as well as examples of new methodology and research paradigms for operando spectroelectrochemistry.

Recent advances in metal-organic framework (MOF)-based agricultural sensors for metal ions: a review

Metal ions have great significance for agricultural development, food safety, and human health. In turn, there exists an imperative need for the development of novel, sensitive, and reliable sensing techniques for various metal ions. Agricultural sensors for the diagnosis of both agricultural safety and nutritional health can establish quality and safety traceability systems of both agro-products and food to guarantee human health, even life safety. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are utilized widely for the design of diversified sensors due to their distinctive structural characteristics and extraordinary optical and electrical properties. To serve agricultural sensors better, this review is dedicated to providing a brief overview of the synthesis of MOFs, the modification of MOFs, the fabrication of MOF-based film electrodes, the applications of MOF-based agricultural sensors for metal ions, which are centered on electrochemical sensors and optical sensors, and current challenges of MOF-based agricultural sensors. In addition, this review also provides potential future opportunities for the development and practical application of agricultural sensors.

Design of competition nanoreactor with shell-isolated colloidal plasmonic nanomaterials for quantitative sensor platform

Shell-isolated colloid plasmonic nanomaterials-based nanoreactor is a well-established platform widely applied in catalyst or Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) sensors. The potentials versatility of nanoreactor platform is mainly implemented by the well-defined and tailorable structure of colloid plasmonic nanomaterials. Currently, a competitive conjugative-mediated nanoreactor is introduced to determine glucose with SERS. Glucose-conjugating nanoreactor, as convertors of the sensors, are constructed by coordinated deposition colloidal gold nanoparticles with sodium nitroprusside framework (Au@SNF) and covalently bonded 4-mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy) with self-assembly strategy. The nanoreactor contained the signal-amplifier Au@SNF NPs, conjugative-mediated signal receiver 4-Mpy, and signal internal standard molecular CN^-. In addition to well-defined morphology and functionality, conjugative-mediated and internal standards method are also employed to benefit the nanoreactor. The two-parameter strategy significantly improves the signal indication and correction. Using this proposed platform, the competitive-mediated nanoreactor provides a quantitative SERS detection of glucose, and extends the applicability of SERS in more complicated and reproducibility analysis. Meanwhile, the nanoreactor based sensors also exhibited better properties to detect glucose in various food samples and bio-samples which provided strongly appliance for glucose sensors.

Operando Scanning Electrochemical Probe Microscopy during Electrocatalysis

Scanning electrochemical probe microscopy (SEPM) techniques can disclose the local electrochemical reactivity of interfaces in single-entity and sub-entity studies. Operando SEPM measurements consist of using a SEPM tip to investigate the performance of electrocatalysts, while the reactivity of the interface is simultaneously modulated. This powerful combination can correlate electrochemical activity with changes in surface properties, e.g., topography and structure, as well as provide insight into reaction mechanisms. The focus of this review is to reveal the recent progress in local SEPM measurements of the catalytic activity of a surface toward the reduction and evolution of O₂ and H₂ and electrochemical conversion of CO₂. The capabilities of SEPMs are showcased, and the possibility of coupling other techniques to SEPMs is presented. Emphasis is given to scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM), electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM), and scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM).

Inducing SERS activity at graphitic carbon using graphene-covered Ag nanoparticle substrates: Spectroelectrochemical analysis of a redox-active adsorbed anthraquinone

Graphitic carbon electrodes are central to many electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies. Probing the behavior of molecular species at the electrochemical interfaces they form is paramount to understanding redox reaction mechanisms. Combining surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with electrochemical methods offers a powerful way to explore such mechanisms, but carbon itself is not a SERS activating substrate. Here, we report on a hybrid substrate consisting of single- or few-layer graphene sheets deposited over immobilized silver nanoparticles, which allows for simultaneous SERS and electrochemical investigation. To demonstrate the viability of our substrate, we adsorbed anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate to graphene and studied its redox response simultaneously using SERS and cyclic voltammetry in acidic solutions. We identified spectral changes consistent with the reversible redox of the quinone/hydroquinone pair. The SERS intensities on bare silver and hybrid substrates were of the same order of magnitude, while no discernible signals were observed over bare graphene, confirming the SERS effect on adsorbed molecules. This work provides new prospects for exploring and understanding electrochemical processes in situ at graphitic carbon electrodes.
