A Visual Hydrogen Sensor Prototype for Monitoring Magnesium Implant Biodegradation

Interfacially Confined Dynamic Reaction Resulted to Fluorescent Nanofilms Depicting High-Performance Ammonia Sensing

Sensing materials innovation plays a crucial role in the development of high-performance film-based fluorescent sensors (FFSs). In our current study, we present the innovative fabrication of four fluorescent nanofilms via interfacially confined dynamic reaction of a specially designed fluorescent building block, a new boron-coordinated compound (NI-CHO), with a chosen one, benzene-1,3,5-tricarbohydrazide (BTH). The nanofilms as prepared are robust, uniform, flexible, and thickness tunable, at least from 40 to 1500 nm. The fabricated FFSs based on Film 3, one of the four nanofilms, shows highly selective and fully reversible response to NH3 vapor with an experimental detection limit of <0.1 ppm and a response time of 0.2 s. The unprecedented high performance of the nanofilm is ascribed to the specific quenching of its fluorescence emission owing to formation of an excited-state complex between the sensing unit and the analyte molecule. Efficient mass transfer also contributes to the high performance owing to the porous adlayer structure of the nanofilm. This work provides an example to show how to develop a high-performance sensing film via controlling the film's structure, especially the thickness.

Supraparticles for naked-eye H2 indication and monitoring: Improving performance by variation of the catalyst nanoparticles

The recent transition to H₂-based energy storage demands reliable H₂ sensors that allow for easy, fast, and reliable detection of leaks. Conventional H₂ detectors are based on the changes of physical properties of H₂ probes induced by subsurface H-atoms to a material such as electrical conductivity. Herein, we report on highly reactive gasochromic H₂ detectors based on the adsorption of H₂ on the material surface. We prepared supraparticles (SPs) containing different types of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs), silica NPs, and the dye resazurin by spray-drying and tested their performance for H₂ detection. The material undergoes a distinct color change due to the hydrogenation of the purple resazurin to pink resorufin and, finally, colorless hydroresorufin. The stepwise transition is fast and visible to the naked eye. To further improve the performance of the sensor, we tested the reactivity of SPs with different catalytically active NPs by means of in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). We show that the choice of the NP catalyst has a pronounced effect on the response of the H₂ indicator. In addition, we demonstrate that the performance depends on the size of the NPs. These effects are attributed to the availability of reactive H-atoms on the NP surface. Among the materials studied, Pt-containing SPs gave the best results for H₂ detection.

In Vivo Study of Local and Systemic Responses to Clinical Use of Mg–1Ca Bioresorbable Orthopedic Implants

(1) Background: Resorbable Mg-based implants represent a new direction in orthopedic surgery but have some drawbacks, such as their rapid biodegradation and increased rate of corrosion. Some in vitro studies hypothesized that tissue necrosis, incision dehiscence, risk of gas embolization in vital organs, interference with coagulation processes, and trophocyte viability impairment can occur. (2) Methods: We conducted an in vivo study on ten rabbit cases, in two groups; group one, consisting of six cases, received cylindrical implants of Mg–1Ca alloy in tibial intramedullary bone tissue. Group two, consisting of four cases, received Mg–1Ca parallelepiped implants, in the thigh muscular tissue. We recorded and compared weight (preoperatively and at 2, 4, and 6 weeks postoperatively), complete blood count, serum electrolytes, liver and kidney functional markers, and coagulation parameters, prior to and at 6 weeks after surgery. Local evolution was assessed radiologically and with tissue biopsies with complete pathology analysis. (3) Results: All biological markers and clinical evolution were favorable, showing good integration of the implants with none of the local or systemic signs of degradation. (4) Conclusions: Our study shows that the clinical use of Mg–1Ca bioresorbable alloys can be safe as none of the cited local or systemic complications have been identified.
