Triple-Wavelength-Region Luminescence Sensing Based on a Color-Tunable Emitting Lanthanide Metal Organic Framework

Wavelength-Based luminescence sensing via Turn-On responses for acid detection in complex Environments

One possible way to address the shortcomings of current acid detection is to add fluorescence detection capabilities, however, there is little data regarding wavelength-based luminescence sensing, which makes possible for the naked eye to perceive various colors through wavelength variations. In this paper, we achieved turn-on response and wavelength-based luminescence sensing on acids detection by using donor-accepter complex Fe-L, which display significant fluorescence discoloration in the presence of a wide range of inorganic and organic acids, including benzoic acids, providing the fluorescence response for a more intuitive and convenient acid detection. The simultaneous achievement of fluorescence enhancement and color change as the acid concentration changes enables visual detection of the acid concentration, which provides a foundation for future research into convenient detection methods for various types of acids.

Fluorescence of europium activated by molecular-like silver clusters for the detection of alkaline phosphatase activity

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is abnormally expressed in some cancers and promotes the growth, metastasis, and invasion of cancer cells. The detection of ALP is of great significance for both pathological study and clinical detection. In this work, a europium (Eu)-based fluorescence detection sensor was prepared in a mild reaction condition. LaF3:Eu nanoparticles was mixed with ethylene imine polymer (PEI) and Ag+ ions. PEI was used as stabilizer and reducing agent, and Ag+ ions were reduced as molecular-like silver clusters (ML-Ag NCs). The fluorescence of LaF3:Eu nanoparticles was enhanced by ML-Ag NCs through energy transfer. When ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AAP) was hydrolyzed to ascorbic acid (AA) in the presence of ALP, AA reduced Ag+ ions to silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and quenched the fluorescence of LaF3:Eu/PEI/Ag. The activity of ALP was detected by measuring the fluorescence intensity of Eu3+ at 618 nm. In the concentration range from 2.0 to 16.0 U/L, the fluorescence intensity ratio ((F0-F)/F0) had a linear relationship with the logarithm of ALP concentration. The limit of detection (LOD) was 1.3 U/L. Moreover, the ALP activity was detected successfully in cancer cells by this method. The sensing platform has application potential in the detection of ALP activity in biological systems.

Real-Time In Situ Volatile Organic Compound Sensing by a Dual-Emissive Polynuclear Ln-MOF with Pronounced LnIII Luminescence Response

Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) are promising for luminescence detection of volatile organic compound (VOC) vapors, but usually suffer from the silent or quenched Ln³⁺ emission. Herein, we report a new dual-emissive Eu-MOF composed of the coordinatively unsaturated Eu₉ clusters that afford abundant open metal sites to form a confined "binding pocket" to facilitate the preconcentration and recognition of VOCs. Single-crystal structural analyses reveal that specific analytes can replace the OH oscillators in the first coordination sphere of Eu³⁺ and form a unique hydrogen-bonding second-sphere adduct tying adjacent Eu₉ clusters together to minimize their nonradiative vibrational decay. With the promoted Eu³⁺ luminescence, the MOF realizes real-time in situ visual sensing of THF vapor (<1 s) and shows a quantitative ratiometric response to the vapor pressure with a limit of detection down to 17.33 Pa. Also, it represents a top-performing ratiometric luminescent thermometer.

Lanthanide-Organic Frameworks with Uncoordinated Lewis Base Sites: Tunable Luminescence, Antibiotic Detection, and Anticounterfeiting

Several new isostructural lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), {[Ln₂(L)₃DMA₄]·2DMA}_n (1-Ln, where Ln = Eu, Tb, or Eu_xTb_1-x), were first constructed via the solvothermal reactions of 4,6-di(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrimidine and Ln³⁺ ions. 1-Ln exhibits a 4-connected two-dimensional framework endowed with uncoordinated Lewis base sites. An exploration of luminescence sensing demonstrated 1-Eu can be used for the selectivity detection of dimetridazole and metronidazole antibiotics in other antibiotics, blood plasma, and urine, acting as an exceptional recyclable luminescent probe. More importantly, the luminescent inks of 1-Ln are invisible, color adjustable, and stabilized, which may greatly improve their anticounterfeiting applications.

Multi-Emission from Single Metal-Organic Frameworks under Single Excitation

Multi-emission materials have come to prominent attention ascribed to their extended applications other than single-emission ones. General and robust design strategies of a single matrix with multi-emission under single excitation are urgently required. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials prepared with organic ligands and metal nodes. The variety of metal nodes and ligands makes MOFs with great superiority as multi-emission matrices. Guest species encapsulated into the channels or pores of MOFs are the additional emission sites for multi-emission. In this review, multi-emission MOFs according to the different excitation sites are summarized and classified. The emission mechanisms are discussed, such as antenna effect, excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and tautomerism for dual-emission. The factors that affect the emissions are revealed, including ligand-metal energy transfer and host-guest interaction, etc. Multi-emission MOFs could be predictably designed and prepared, once the emissive factors are controlled rationally in combination with the different multi-emission mechanisms. Correspondingly, new and practical applications are realized, including but not limited to ratiometric/multi-target sensing and bioimaging, white light-emitting diodes, and anti-counterfeiting. The design strategies of multi-emission MOFs and their extensive applications are reviewed. The results will shed light on other multi-emission systems to develop the structure-derived functionality and applications.

Stable dual-emissive fluorescin@UiO-67 metal-organic frameworks for visual and ratiometric sensing of Al3+ and ascorbic acid

Encapsulation of fluorophore in metal organic framework (MOF) is an effective method to construct multi-emissive composites. Unfortunately, the small molecules loaded in MOF pores are easy to leak. To overcome this difficulty, fluorescin (FL) is proposed to be encapsulated tightly in the cage of the small tetrahedron of UiO-67, as one of the organic ligands coordinated with the central ion Zr. Finally, stable multi-emission fluorescence was successfully achieved, and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) occurred between FL and UiO-67. Ascorbic acid (AA) can dynamically quench the fluorescence of FL@UiO-67 nanoclusters (NCs) through internal filtering effect, photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The detection limit of the probe for AA was as low as 0.20 μM, and the detection range was 0.67 μM-0.36 mM. The probe was further employed to detect Al³⁺ due to the coordination between Al³⁺ and the carboxyl group in the FL@UiO-67 NCs. The detection limit for Al³⁺ was 3.3 nM, and the linear range was 11 nM-5 μM agarose film and test paper were both prepared successfully for visual detection of AA and Al³⁺. This work provides new ideas for low-cost and convenient real-time detection method.

Photoluminescence of LaI3 switched on and off by association and dissociation of non-luminescent tetrahydrofuran

Although luminescent lanthanide-containing molecular complexes are well-known, it is not the case for La³⁺ with no 4f or 5d electrons, and the few luminescent complexes of La³⁺ contain luminescent ligands. Herein, we report an unexpected photoluminescence phenomenon of the LaI₃(THF)₄ complex that was easily prepared by immersing commercial anhydrous LaI₃ in THF. Strong blue emission was observed when LaI₃(THF)₄ was subjected to UV irradiation at 254 nm, which contrasts the non-luminescence character of either LaI₃ or THF. The absolute emission quantum yield was determined to be 50.5%. The observed luminescence of LaI₃(THF)₄ results from metal-to-ligand charge transition (MLCT) which differs from the known charge transition types for lanthanum complexes according to DFT/TDDFT calculations. The photoluminescence of LaI₃ can be switched on and off by reversible THF association and dissociation. THF concentrations as low as 0.1 vol% in n-hexane and 0.5 vol% in the gas phase can be detected, indicating the capability of anhydrous LaI₃ as a sensor for convenient and rapid THF detection.

Multi-emission metal-organic framework composites for multicomponent ratiometric fluorescence sensing: recent developments and future challenges

Ratiometric fluorescence sensors that are achieved via the ratiometric fluorescence intensity changes of emission peaks based on multi-emission fluorescence probes show a huge advantage. However, the preparation of these multi-emission fluorescence probes is a key challenge, as it is related to having more fluorescence groups with the same excitation but different emission wavelengths, and their assembly is not a simple mixing process. More fluorescent groups or molecules can be assembled into the multi-emission fluorescence probe by covalent bonds and coordination interactions, or by loading in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). MOFs are excellent candidates for constructing complexes with the capability of multicomponent ratiometric fluorescence sensing, but there are some problems that need to be considered. For example, not all fluorophores can be stably loaded in the MOFs' pores, usually due to the size, surface charge and intrinsic properties of the fluorophore. In turn, it is also related to the structure of the MOF, metal nodes, and properties of the organic ligands. This review first introduces the advantages of the MOF-based multi-component fluorescence sensors, and then discusses the synthesis, classification and application of fluorescent MOFs or MOF composites for multi-component ratiometric fluorescence detection. Particular emphasis is focused on the potential, types and characteristics for sensing and biological applications, and the main challenges and limitations are further explored. This review might be helpful for those researchers interested in the application of multi-component ratiometric fluorescence sensing based on fluorescent MOFs or MOF composites.

Recent progresses in luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) as sensors for the detection of anions and cations in aqueous solution

The discharge of excessive metal ions and anions into water bodies leads to the serious pollution of water and environment, which in turn has a certain impact on industry, agriculture, and human life. Because of the unique advantages of luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs), they have been successfully explored as various fluorescent probes to quickly and effectively detect these pollutants. This perspective not only introduces the design strategy and classification of LMOFs, especially the construction methods of water-stable LMOFs, but also reports the latest progresses in some LMOFs between 2016 and 2020 as well as expounds the mechanisms of LMOFs for detecting anions and cations. Moreover, the luminescence properties of LMOFs are related to the selection of metal ions, the structure of organic ligands, the pore size, and the interaction of guest molecules. Finally, the further development of LMOFs is summarized and prospected in this field.

High Luminance of Heterolanthanide-Based Molecular Alloys by Phase-Induction Strategy

Reactions in water of lanthanide chlorides with the sodium salt of 4,5-dichlorophthalate (dcpa^2-) lead to two families of isostructural coordination polymers: family F1 that gathers compounds with the general chemical formula [Ln₂(dcpa)₃(H₂O)]_∞ with Ln = La-Gd (except Pm) and family F2 that gathers compounds with general chemical formula [Ln₂(dcpa)₃(H₂O)₅·3H₂O]_∞ with Ln = Tb-Lu plus Y. Heterolanthanide molecular alloys that contain both Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ ions have been prepared in both structural families. Their luminescence properties have been studied, especially from the brightness point of view. This study revealed that structural family F1 provides molecular alloys that are much more luminescent than those of structural family F2. Therefore, a phase-induction strategy was followed that allowed the design of some molecular alloys (La/Tb/Eu and La/Dy) that are, to the best of our knowledge, among the most luminescent coordination polymers reported so far. This study opens the way to bright luminescent bar codes as well as to bright white luminescent lanthanide-based coordination polymers.

Regulation of the Metal Center and Coordinating Anion of Mononuclear Ln(III) Complexes to Promote an Efficient Luminescence Response to Various Organic Solvents

A series of mononuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln(L1)(NO₃)₃], (Ln = Dy(III), 1; Tb(III), 3; and Eu(III), 4; L1 = (N¹E,N²E)-N¹,N²-bis((1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)methylene)cyclohexane-1,2-diamine) is obtained by reacting N-methylbenzimidazole-2-carbaldehyde (L2) and 1,2-cyclohexanediamine (L3) with Ln(NO₃)₃·6H₂O under solvothermal conditions. L1 ligand is produced via an in situ Schiff base reaction of two molecules of L2 and one molecule of L3. The metal center Ln(III) is in a N₄O₆ environment formed by L1 and NO₃^-. NaSCN is added on the basis of 1 synthesis. One SCN^- replaces one of the three coordinated NO₃^- anions in the 1 structure, and the complex [Dy(L1)(NO₃)₂(SCN)]·CH₃CN (2) is synthesized. The complex 1 shows excellent luminescence response to petroleum ether (PET), an organic solvent. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to use a complex for sensing responses to PET. When the metal center is changed, the obtained mononuclear complexes 3 and 4 show an excellent luminescence response to tetrahydrofuran (THF). Lastly, 2 obtained by changing the coordinating anion shows an excellent luminescence response to dichloromethane. Herein, for the first time, we regulate the metal center and coordinating anion of lanthanide complexes to adjust the recognition and response of these complexes to different organic solvents.

Waste PET as a Reactant for Lanthanide MOF Synthesis and Application in Sensing of Picric Acid

In this study, a lanthanide metal organic framework based on the ligand of terephthalic acid derived from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles was designed and synthesized. The structure and morphology of the Tb-BDC was investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Tb-BDC displays a high selectivity and sensitivity towards picric acid (TNP). The luminescence intensities exhibit a linear relation, with a concentration of TNP over the range of 1 × 10^-5-1 × 10^-4 M, with a limit of detection of 1 × 10^-5 M. The sensing mechanism is also discussed. This is the first time that waste PET materials have been used as the starting precursor of terephthalic acid (BDC) for the fabrication of lanthanide MOF (metal organic framework), which is applied in sensing TNP.

A highly fluorescent lanthanide metal-organic framework as dual-mode visual sensor for berberine hydrochloride and tetracycline

A microscale highly fluorescent Eu metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) was synthesized with terephthalic acid and 1H-1,2,4-triazole-3,5-diamine by one-pot hydrothermal method. And it was characterized by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, fluorescence spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and energy dispersive X-ray mapping. The prepared Eu-MOF has high quantum yield of 30.99%, excellent water dispersibility, good fluorescence stability, and favorable thermal stability. Based on the distinctly different fluorescence responses of different emission, the prepared Eu-MOF was used as dual-mode visual sensor for the sensitive detection of berberine hydrochloride and tetracycline. The limits of detection are 78 nM and 17 nM, respectively. The sensing mechanism was also discussed. Moreover, a filter paper sensor has been designed for sensing tetracycline with a notable fluorescence color change from blue to red. The prepared Eu-MOF is promising to be developed as a multi-mode luminescent sensor for visual detection in biochemical analysis. Highly Water-Stable Dye@Ln-MOFs for Sensitive and Selective Detection toward Antibiotics in Water

The host-guest composite, RhB@Tb-dcpcpt, is synthesized by trapping rhodamine B (RhB) into the channels of [Me₂NH₂][Tb₃(dcpcpt)₃(HCOO)]·DMF·15H₂O (Tb-dcpcpt, DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide) via an ion-exchange process. The photophysical property of RhB@Tb-dcpcpt exhibits stable columinescence of RhB and Tb³⁺ ions in the whole excitation range of 300-390 nm, realizing an excitation-wavelength-independent yellow light emission. Powder X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence analysis illustrate the outstanding stabilities of RhB@Tb-dcpcpt on structural and photophysical properties in water medium. Subsequently, a bifunctional sensing process toward antibiotics is designed in terms of luminescent intensity and color. As a result, RhB@Tb-dcpcpt could realize sensitive and selective detection toward nitrofuran antibiotics (nitrofurazone and nitrofurantoin) via  luminescent quenching process and toward quinolone antibiotics (ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin) via luminescent color-changing process. Systematic analysis on the sensing mechanism reveals that photoinduced electron transfer and inner filter effect contribute to the realization of the sensing process.

Tunable Light Emission and Multiresponsive Luminescent Sensitivities in Aqueous Solutions of Two Series of Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Structurally Related Ligands

Two series of lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) from two structurally related flexible carboxylate-based ligands were solvothermally synthesized. H₃L2 with additional -CH₂- group provides more flexibility and different coordination modes and conformations compared with H₃L1. As a result, 2-Ln MOFs are modulated from two-dimensional kgd of 1-Ln to three-dimensional rtl topological frameworks and further achieve enhanced chemical stability. The Eu- and Tb-MOFs exhibit strong fluorescent emission at the solid state because of the antenna effect of the ligands. Interestingly, the emissions can be tuned by simply doping Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ of different concentrations within the Eu _xTb_{1- x} MOFs. Notably, 2-Ln MOFs realize nearly white light emission by means of a trichromatic approach (red of Eu(III), green of Tb(III), and blue of the H₃L2 ligand). Furthermore, 2-Ln MOFs also exhibit water stability and demonstrate high selective and sensitive sensing activities toward Fe(III) and Cr(VI) in aqueous solutions. The results further highlight the importance of the ligand flexibility on tuning MOF structures with improved structural stability and ion-sensing properties.

White-Light-Emitting Decoding Sensing for Eight Frequently-Used Antibiotics Based on a Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework

Developing multi-selective luminescence sensing technology to differentiate serial compounds is very important but challenging. White-light-emitting decoding sensing based on lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) is a promising candidate for multi-selective luminescence sensing application. In this work, three isomorphic Ln-MOFs based on H₃dcpcpt (3-(3,5-dicarboxylphenyl)-5-(4-carboxylphenl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole) ligand, exhibiting red, blue, and green emission, respectively, have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions. The isostructural mixed Eu/Gd/Tb-dcpcpt is fabricated via the in-situ doping of different Ln³⁺ ions into the host framework, which can emit white light upon the excitation at 320 nm. It is noteworthy that this white-light-emitting complex could serve as a convenient luminescent platform for distinguishing eight frequently-used antibiotics: five through luminescence-color-changing processes (tetracycline hydrochloride, yellow; nitrofurazone, orange; nitrofurantoin, orange; sulfadiazine, blue; carbamazepine, blue) and three through luminescence quenching processes (metronidazole, dimetridazole, and ornidazole). Moreover, a novel method, 3D decoding map, has been proposed to realize multi-selective luminescence sensing applications. This triple-readout map features unique characteristics on luminescence color and mechanism. The mechanism has been systematically interpreted on the basis of the structural analysis, energy transfer and allocation process, and peak fitting analysis for photoluminescence spectra. This approach presents a promising strategy to explore luminescent platforms capable of effectively sensing serial compounds.

A family of lanthanide compounds has been explored and enhanced luminescence has been accomplished by doping method. A brand new and multifunctional fluorescence probe was developed, which was able to detect CH₃COOH and HS⁻ with different mechanisms.

Enhanced luminescence for detection of small molecules based on doped lanthanide compounds with a dinuclear double-stranded helicate structure

A family of isostructural lanthanide compounds was explored and enhanced luminescence accomplished by doping. A novel and multifunctional fluorescence probe was developed, which was able to detect CH₃COOH, Al³⁺ and Cr₂O₇²⁻.
