Abstract
Due to the risk of heavy metal pollution in infant milk powder, it is significant to establish effective detection methods. Here, a screen-printed electrode (SPE) was modified with nanoporous carbon (NPC) to detect Pb(II) and Cd(II) in infant milk powder using an electrochemical method. Using NPC as a functional nanolayer facilitated the electrochemical detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II) due to its efficient mass transport and large adsorption capacity. Linear responses were obtained for Pb (II) and Cd(II) in the range from 1 to 60 µg L-1 and 5 to 70 µg L-1, respectively. The limit of detection was 0.1 µg L-1 for Pb(II) and 1.67 µg L-1 for Cd(II). The reproducibility, stability, and anti-interference performance of the prepared sensor were tested as well. The heavy metal ion detection performance in the extracted infant milk powder shows that the developed SPE/NPC possesses the ability to detect Pb(II) and Cd(II) in milk powder.

Abstract
Ligands plays an important role in the extraction procedures for the determination of cadmium in rice samples by using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). In the present study, comparative evaluation of 10 commercially available ligands for formation of Cd(II)-ligand complex and determination of cadmium in rice samples by ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (UADLLME) combined with FAAS was developed. Sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) provided a high distribution coefficient as well as a good absorbance signal, therefore DDTC was used as a ligand in UADLLME. A low density and less toxic solvent, 1-heptanol, was used as the extraction solvent and ethanol was used as the disperser solvent. In addition, the experimental conditions of UADLLME were optimized in standard solution first and then applied in rice, such as the type and volume of extractant and dispersant, pH, extraction time, and temperature. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the detection limit (3σ) was 0.69 μg/L for Cd(II). The proposed method was applied for the determination of Cd(II) in three different rice samples (polished rice, brown rice, and glutinous rice), the recovery test was carried out, and the results ranged between 96.7 to 113.6%. The proposed method has the advantages of simplicity, low cost, and accurate and was successfully applied to analyze Cd(II) in rice.

Abstract
The further miniaturization of liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) systems has important significance and major challenges for microscale sample analysis. Herein, we developed a rapid and flexible droplet-droplet microfluidic microextraction approach to perform nanoliter-scale miniaturized sample pretreatment, by combining droplet-based microfluidics, robotic liquid handling, and LPME techniques. Differing from the previous microextraction methods, both the extractant and sample volumes were decreased from the microliter scale or even milliliter scale to the nanoliter scale. We utilized the ability of a liquid-handling robot to manipulate nanoliter-scale droplets and micrometer-scale positioning to overcome the scaling effect difficulties in performing liquid-liquid extraction of nanoliter-volume samples in microsystems. Two microextraction modes, droplet-in-droplet microfluidic microextraction and droplet-on-droplet microfluidic microextraction, were developed according to the different solubility properties of the extractants. Various factors affecting the microextraction process were investigated, including the extraction time, recovery method of the extractant droplet, static and dynamic extraction mode, and cross-contamination. To demonstrate the validity and adaptability of the pretreatment and analysis of droplet samples with complex matrices, the present microextraction system coupled with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MS) detection was applied to the quantitative determination of 7-ethyl-10-hydroxylcamptothecin (SN-38), an active metabolite of the anticancer drug irinotecan, in 800-nL droplets containing HepG2 cells. A linear relationship (y = 0.0305x + 0.376, R2 = 0.984) was obtained in the range of 4-100 ng/mL, with the limits of detection and quantitation being 2.2 and 4.5 ng/mL for SN-38, respectively.

Abstract
A capillary monolith consisting of poly[N-(4-vinyl)-benzyl iminodiacetic acid-co-divinylbenzene-co-N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide), referred to as poly(VBIDA-DVB-Bis), has been prepared. It is shown to be an efficient sorbent for the enrichment of Co(II) and Cd(II). The two ions are completely retained by the monolith in the pH range from 4.0 to 9.0. The breakthrough curve tests were adopted to evaluate the adsorption performance of the monolith towards Co(II) and Cd(II). A dose-response model was used to describe the breakthrough curves of the two ions at different initial concentrations. The adsorption capacities for Co(II) and Cd(II) are 1.54 and 1.73 mg·m-1 at a concentration level of 2.5 mg·L-1, respectively. The enrichment factor is 100, and the required sample volume is 5 mL. Following elution of the two ions with 0.5 M HNO3, they were quantified by ICP-MS. The limits of detection in a 1 mL sample are 0.35 ng·L-1 for Co(II) and 0.44 ng·L-1 for Cd(II). The method was applied to the determination of Co(II) and Cd(II) in spiked rice, human urine and seawater samples. Graphical abstract Schematic representation of a monolithic copolymer prepared from N-(4-vinyl)-benzyl iminodiacetic acid (VBIDA), divinylbenzene (DVB) and N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (Bis) and its application for selective capturing of cadmium(II) and cobalt(II) from complex sample matrices prior to their determination by ICP-MS.
