Highly Selective Detection of Benzene, Toluene, and Xylene Hydrocarbons Using Coassembled Microsheets with Förster Resonance Energy Transfer-Enhanced Photostability

Single-Chain Conjugated Polymer Guests Confined inside Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs): Boosting the Detection and Degradation of a Sulfur Mustard Simulant

Real-time detection and effective degradation of toxic gases have attracted considerable attention in environmental monitoring and human health. Here, we demonstrate a solvent-assisted dynamic assembly strategy to strongly enhance the detection and degradation performance for 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES, as a sulfur mustard simulant) via confinement of a conjugated polymer in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The conjugated polymer poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene-altbenzothiadiazole) (F8BT) is infiltrated into one-dimensional nanochannels of the Zr-based topological MOF NU-1000 in a single-chain manner, which is caused by the nanoconfinement effect and the steric hindrance between 9,9-dioctylfluorene units and benzothiadiazole units. The obtained F8BT⊂NU-1000 composites provide a high specific surface area and abundant active sites. Based on the cooperative effect of F8BT and NU-1000, rapid and sensitive detection of CEES has been achieved. Moreover, the F8BT⊂NU-1000 composites can selectively oxidize CEES into 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide (CEESO) under mild photooxidation conditions. Overall, this study opens a new avenue for the fabrication of conjugated polymer/MOF hybrid materials that show great potential for the sensitive detection and effective removal of hazardous chemicals.

Turn-On Fluorescence Chemical Sensing through Transformation of Self-Trapped Exciton States at Room Temperature

Most of the current fluorescence sensing materials belong to the turn-off type, which make it hard to detect toxic substances such as benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) due to the lack of active chemical sites, thereby limiting their development and practical use. Herein, we show a guest-host mechanism stemming from the confined emitter's self-trapped exciton (STE) states or electron-phonon coupling to achieve turn-on fluorescence. We designed a luminescent guest@metal-organic framework (LG@MOF) composite material, termed perylene@MIL-68(In), and established its E-type excimeric emission properties in the solid state. Upon exposure to BTX, especially xylene, we show that the E-excimer readily converts into the Y-excimer due to nanoconfinement of the MOF structure. Such a transformation elevates the fluorescence intensity, thus realizing a turn-on type fluorescent sensor for detecting BTX solvents. Our results further demonstrate that controlling the STE states of perylene at room temperature (vs the previous report of <50 K) is possible via nanoscale confinement, paving the way to enabling turn-on type luminescent sensors for engineering practical applications.

π-Electronic Coassembled Microflake Sensors with Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Enhanced Discrimination of Methanol and Ethanol

In the field of fluorescence-based gas sensing, it is very difficult to realize the distinction of the molecules with similar chemical properties and slight structural differences (e.g., methanol and ethanol). Herein, we fabricated coassemblies of energy-donor molecule 1 (M1) and energy-acceptor molecule 2 (M2) with different molar ratios. These materials can selectively differentiate methanol and ethanol by regulating the distance of exciton migration of donor M1 by embedding energy-acceptor M2. More importantly, methanol can also be detected from the mixture vapors of methanol and ethanol. These results provide a new approach for developing fluorescence sensors that are highly sensitive to molecules with very small difference in the chemical structures.

Discriminating BTX Molecules by the Nonselective Metal Oxide Sensor-Based Smart Sensing System

Discriminating structurally similar volatile organic compounds (VOCs) molecules, such as benzene, toluene, and three xylene isomers (BTX), remains a significant challenge, especially, for metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, in which selectivity is a long-standing challenge. Recent progress indicates that temperature modulation of a single MOS sensor offers a powerful route in extracting the features of adsorbed gas analytes than conventional isothermal operation. Herein, a rectangular heating waveform is applied on NiO-, WO₃-, and SnO₂-based sensors to gradually activate the specific gas/oxide interfacial redox reaction and generate rich (electrical) features of adsorbed BTX molecules. Upon several signal preprocessing steps, the intrinsic feature of BTX molecules can be extracted by the linear discrimination analysis (LDA) or convolutional neural network (CNN) analysis. The combination of three distinct MOS sensors noticeably benefits the recognition accuracy (with a reduced number of training iterations). Finally, a prototype of a smart BTX recognition system (including sensing electronics, sensors, Wi-Fi module, UI, PC, etc.) based on temperature modulation has been explored, which enables a prompt, accurate, and stable identification of xylene isomers in the ambient air background and raises the hope of innovating the future advanced machine olfactory system.

Development of a Fluorophore with Enhanced Unorthodox Chalcogen Bonding for Highly Sensitive Detection of Trimethyl Arsine Vapor

In this work, we report the design of novel fluorophores that bear three benzothiadiazole and benzoselenadiazole groups, respectively, for sensitive detection of trimethyl arsine vapor. In particular, the fluorophore with the benzoselenadiazole groups can form stronger chalcogen bonding with trimethyl arsine than the fluorophore with the benzothiadiazole groups, which in turn triggers much faster and more sensitive fluorescence responses. On the basis of this novel mechanism, fluorescence detection of trimethyl arsine vapor with rapid response (∼3 s), high sensitivity (the theoretical LOD is 0.44 ppb), and high selectivity is achieved on bundled nanofibers from the fluorophore with the benzoselenadiazole groups. Here, the new fluorescence sensor may find wide applications in health and environmental monitoring, arsenic distribution recognition in soil, and arsenic mines exploration.

Two-dimensional nano-layered materials as multi-responsive chemosensors constructed by carbazole- and fluorene-based polyaniline-like derivatives

The development of multi-responsive chemosensors has a bright application prospect in environmental monitoring and biological diagnosis. In this paper, we report two kinds of fluorescent polyaniline-like derivatives containing of carbazole or fluorene moieties with two-dimensional (2D) nano-layered structure and their applications in the detection of Al³⁺, Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺ and HCl in different environments. Through the analysis of the structure and properties of these two 2D materials, we find that the prepared (Poly(9,9'-(9,9-dihexyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(9H-carbazol-3-amine))) PDFCA material performs excellent sensing properties for above analytes. Relevant density functional theory (DFT) calculation further confirms the potential application of 2D nano-layered PDFCA material in sensing field. This study presents that 2D nano-layered PDFCA material is considerably competitive in the development of multi-responsive chemosensors, and it will greatly accelerate the research of 2D polymer materials.

Amphiphilic BODIPY-based nanoparticles as "light-up" fluorescent probe for PAEs detection by an aggregation/disaggregation approach

Phthalic acid eaters (PAEs) play the role of plasticizer and have been widely used in the industrial and plastic production process. But due to not chemically bound in the polymeric matrix, PAEs can be easily released directly and/or indirectly into the environment, and pose a threat the ecosystem and human health. Small-molecule self-assembled nanoparticles have drawn more and more attention due to advantages of precise molecular structure, biocompatibility, great diversity, and tunability in optical properties and functionalities. Here we report the use of disaggregation-induced emission (DIE) based supramolecular assembly to design organic nanoprobe for detection PAEs. In the water solution, the designed small organic fluorophore AJ-1 was aggregated via noncovalent forces to form fluorescence off nanoparticles, but in the presence of PAEs, they disaggregated and produced a clear light-up fluorescent signal. The detection of PAEs with selectivity, sensitivity and rapid response were further achieved. The experiment of recovery of PAEs in real-water sample illustrated the practicability of probe AJ-1 in real-world applications. Besides, cellular uptake assay suggested that AJ-1 could pass through membrane and gather in the cytoplasm.

High-Performance Trichloroacetic Acid Sensor Based on the Intramolecular Hydrogen Bond Formation and Disruption of a Specially Designed Fluorescent o-Carborane Derivative in the Film State

Discriminative and sensitive detection of environmentally important and health-related trichloroacetic acid (TCA) suffers from various problems such as bulky instruments and time-consuming operation as well as complex sample processing. Herein, we present a rapid, sensitive, and specific method for the detection of gaseous TCA using a fluorescent single-molecule array. An o-carborane-based benzothiazole derivative (CB-BT-OCH₃) with specific fluorescence properties was specifically designed and utilized to fabricate a film-based single-molecule array. It was revealed that the fluorescent film is photochemically stable and extremely sensitive to TCA vapor, depicting an observable fluorescence color change from green to blue. The experimental detection limit is 0.2 ppm, which is lower than the safety limit (1 ppm) required by the threshold limit values and biological exposure indices. In addition, the film could show detectable intensity change within 0.2 s. On the basis of multiple signal responses, a conceptual two-channel-based fluorescent TCA sensor was developed. Importantly, the proposed conceptual sensor paves a new route to the development of specific fluorescent film-based sensor arrays with a single fluorophore as sensing units.

Highly Photostable and Luminescent Donor-Acceptor Molecules for Ultrasensitive Detection of Sulfur Mustard

Real-time, high signal intensity, and prolonged detection is challenging because of the rarity of fluorophores with both high photostability and luminescence efficiency. In this work, new donor-acceptor (D-A) molecules for overcoming these limitations are reported. A hybridized local and an intramolecular charge-transfer excited state is demonstrated to afford high photoluminescence efficiency of these D-A molecules in solution (≈100%). The twisted molecular structure and bulky alkyl chains effectively suppress π-π and dipole-dipole interactions, enabling high luminescence efficiency of 1 and 2 in the solid state (≈94% and 100%). Furthermore, two D-A aggregates exhibit high photostability as evidenced by 4% and 8% of the fluorescence decreasing after 6 h of continuous irradiation in air, which is in sharp contrast to ≈95% of fluorescence decreasing in a reference compound. Importantly, with these molecules, ultrasensitive detection of sulfur mustard (SM) with a record limit of 10 ppb and selective detection of SM in complex matrices are achieved.

Long-Range Exciton Migration in Coassemblies: Achieving High Photostability without Disrupting the Electron Donation of Fluorene Oligomers

In this work, photostable coassemblies from a nonphotostable fluorene oligomer (the energy donor) and a photostable oligomer (the energy acceptor) are fabricated. Long-range exciton migration over a net distance of about 370 energy-donor molecules to energy acceptors is demonstrated in such coassemblies. The fast and long energy migration allows harvesting of the excitation energy of energy donors by embedding a small number of energy acceptors for photostability enhancement. Importantly, embedding a small number of energy acceptors in coassemblies causes a negligible negative influence on the electron donation of energy donors that are desired in practical applications. The advantages of the coassemblies fabricated, that is, high photostability without disrupting the electron donation of energy donors, are well illustrated in fluorescence detection of trace explosives where prolonged working life and improved detection capacity are achieved.

Development of a smartphone-based real time cost-effective VOC sensor

Air pollution by various volatile organic compounds (VOC) is a matter of concern for us. So in this regard, designing real-time VOC responsive materials is gaining attention across the scientific community. In this present work, we have developed an inexpensive VOC sensor based on a Meisenheimer complex derived from picric acid and N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. The sensor coated TLC plate was used as a sensor of potentially harmful VOCs. The sensor coated TLC plate looks deep red colored and does not show any fluorescence emission under 366 nm UV light. But in the presence of harmful volatile organic compounds like benzene, toluene, xylene, etc the sensor coated TLC plate becomes orange colored and it also shows strong yellow emission under 366 nm UV light. This property was utilized to detect the VOCs by fluorescence spectroscopy. The detection limit for various VOCs was found to be in the range of 0.7-9 ppm. To make the sensor user friendly, we have demonstrated a method where VOCs can be detected using a smartphone in real-time and also the setup is portable.

Turn-on Fluorescent Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide and Triacetone Triperoxide via Enhancing Interfacial Interactions of a Blended System

In this work, we report the fabrication of a blend consisting of fluorescent 1 nanofibers and amberlyst-15 particles as a turn-on fluorescence sensor for trace TATP vapors. Fluorescence imaging and lifetime analysis reveal that the interface between 1 nanofibers and amberlyst-15 particles exhibits stronger photoluminescence than the unblended areas because of the formed strong hydrogen bonding between. Furthermore, the interfacial adhesion between 1 nanofibers and amberlyst-15 particles can be amplified by H₂O₂, which in turn gives rise to rapid and remarkable fluorescence enhancement. When exposed to TATP vapors, the amberlyst-15 component can rapidly decompose TATP into H₂O₂ that gives sensitive fluorescence enhancement responses of the blend. On the basis of this detection mechanism, fluorescence detection of TATP with rapid response (ca. 5 s) and high sensitivity (ca. 0.1 ppm) is achieved. Here, the resulting blend combines the pretreatment of TATP and detection responses and thereby simplifies the senor fabrication for the practical application.
