Active-Site-Rich 1T-Phase CoMoSe2 Integrated Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Electrochemical Sensor and Energy Storage Applications

Novel pyrochlore type europium stannate - tungsten disulfide heterostructure for light driven carbon dioxide reduction and nitrogen fixation

The reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen (N2) to value-added products is a substantial area of research in the fields of sustainable chemistry and renewable energy that aims at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the production of alternative fuels and chemicals. The current work deals with the synthesis of pyrochlore-type europium stannate (Eu2Sn2O7: EuSnO), tungsten disulfide (WS2:WS), and novel EuSnO/WS heterostructure by a simple and facile co-precipitation-aided hydrothermal method. Using different methods, the morphological and structural analyses of the prepared samples were characterized. It was confirmed that a heterostructure was formed between the cubic EuSnO and the layered WS. Synthesized materials were used for photocatalytic CO2 and N2 reduction under UV and visible light. The amount of CO and CH4 evolved due to CO2 reduction is high in EuSnO/WS (CO = 104, CH4 = 64 μmol h-1 g-1) compared to pure EuSnO (CO = 36, CH4 = 70 μmol h-1 g-1) and WS (CO = 22, CH4 = 1.8 μmol h-1 g-1) under visible light. The same trend was observed even in the N2 fixation reaction under visible light, and the amount of NH4+ produced was found to be 13, 26, and 41 μmol h-1 g-1 in the presence of WS, EuSnO and EuSnO/WS, respectively. Enhanced light-driven activity towards CO2 and N2 reduction reactions in EuSnO/WS is due to the efficient charge separation through the formation of type-II heterostructure, which is in part associated with photocurrent response, photoluminescence, and electrochemical impedence spectroscopic (EIS) results. The EuSnO/WS heterostructure's exceptional stability and reusability may pique the attention of pyrochlore-based composite materials in photocatalytic energy and environmental applications.

Temperature-Induced Conversion of 2D Vanadium-Doped MoSe2 Nanosheets to 1D V2MoO8 Rods: Enhanced Performance in Electrochemical Antibiotic Detection in Biological and Environmental Samples

In this work, new strategies were developed to prepare 1D-V2MoO8 (VMO) rods from 2D V-doped MoSe2 nanosheets (VMoSe2) with good control over morphology and crystallinity by a facile hydrothermal and calcination process. The morphological changes from 2D to 1D rods were controlled by changing the calcination temperature from 300 to 600 °C. The elimination of Se and the incorporation of O into the V-Mo structure were evaluated by TGA, p-XRD, Raman, FE-SEM, EDAX, FE-TEM, and XPS analyses. These results prove that the optimization of the physical parameters leads to changes in the crystal phase and textural properties of the prepared material. The VMoSe2 and its calcined products were investigated as electrochemical sensors for the detection of the antibacterial drug nitrofurantoin (NFT). At a calcination temperature of 500 °C, the modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) proved to be an excellent electrochemical sensor for the detection of NFT in neutral media. Under the optimized conditions, VMO-500 °C/SPCE exhibits low detection limit (LOD) (0.015 μM), wide linear ranges (0.1-31, 47-1802 μM), good sensitivity, and selectivity. The proposed sensor was successfully used for the analysis of NFT in real samples with good recovery results. Moreover, the reduction potential of NFT agreed well with the theoretical analysis using quantum chemical calculations, with the B3LYP with 6-31G(d,p) basis set predicting an E0 value of -0.45 V. The interaction between the electrode surface and NFT via the LUMO diagram and the electrostatic potential surface is also discussed.

Supercritical CO2 mediated construction of aluminium waste recovered γ-Al2O3 impregnated Dracaena trifasciata biomass-derived carbon composite: A robust electrocatalyst for mutagenic pollutant detection

Inspired by the waste-to-wealth concept, we have recovered the gamma phase aluminium oxide nanoparticles (γ-Al2O3 NPs) from waste aluminium (Al) foils and fabricated a composite with Dracaena trifasciata biomass-derived activated carbon matrix (DT-AC) using supercritical carbon-di-oxide (SC-CO2) pathway. The prepared samples are characterized altogether by various micro- and spectroscopic analyses. Based on the results, the recovered γ-Al2O3 NPs are well impregnated in the DT-AC surface by the action of the microbubble effect from the SC-CO2. The higher D-band and ID/IG value of 1.07 in the Al2O3/DT-AC nanocomposite indicate increased defects and the amorphous nature of the carbon materials. The effect of scan rate (ν) demonstrated greater linearity in ν1/2 vs peak current in the electrochemical detection study of the mutagenic pollutant 4-(methylamino) phenol hemi sulfate, showing a quasi-reversible electron transfer process undergoing diffusion-controlled kinetics. Furthermore, the limit of detection is determined to be 3.2 nM L-1 with an extensive linear range, spanning from 0.05 to 618.25 µM/L. The incredible sensitivity of 2.117 μA μM-1 cm-2, along with excellent selectivity, repeatability, and stability, is observed. Further, the respectable recovery percentage of 98.61 % in the environmental water sample is perceived. The observed outcomes suggest that the prepared Al2O3/DT-AC composite performs as an excellent electrocatalyst material, and the processing techniques used are thought to be sustainable in nature.

Electrochemical Sensors Based on Transition Metal Materials for Phenolic Compound Detection

Electrochemical sensors have been recognized as crucial tools for monitoring comprehensive chemical information, especially in the detection of a significant class of molecules known as phenolic compounds. These compounds can be present in water as hazardous analytes and trace contaminants, as well as in living organisms where they regulate their metabolism. The sensitive detection of phenolic compounds requires highly efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts to enable the development of high-performance sensors. Therefore, this review focuses on the development of advanced materials with excellent catalytic activity as alternative electrocatalysts to conventional ones, with a specific emphasis on transition metal-based electrocatalysts for the detection of phenolic compounds. This research is particularly relevant in diverse sectors such as water quality, food safety, and healthcare.

Electrochemical Biosensor for Detection of the CYP2C19*2 Allele Based on Exonuclease Ⅲ

Currently, the therapeutic effect of clopidogrel differs considerably among individuals and is thought to be closely related to the genetic polymorphism of CYP2C19. The CYP2C19*2 gene can reduce the antiplatelet aggregation effect of clopidogrel, which increases the risk of major cardiovascular adverse events in patients. In this research, we report a new type of biosensor for the highly sensitive detection of the CYP2C19*2 gene based on exonuclease III assisted electric signal amplification and the use of calixarene to enrich electrical signal substances. Specifically, under the best conditions, the logarithmic concentrations of the analytes have a good linear relationship with the peak current in the range of 0.01 fM to 100 pM and the detection limit is 13.49 aM. The results have also shown that this method has good selectivity, high sensitivity, and stability, etc., and will provide a very promising application for the detection of the CYP2C19*2 gene and other biological molecules by replacing corresponding nucleic acid sequences.

Bimetallic CoSe2/FeSe2 hollow nanocuboids assembled by nanoparticles as a positive electrode material for a high-performance hybrid supercapacitor

Design and fabrication of impressive and novel electrode materials for energy storage devices, especially supercapacitors, are of great importance. Herein, bimetallic CoSe₂/FeSe₂ hollow nanocuboid nanostructures derived from Co/Fe-Prussian Blue analogues (denoted as CoSe₂/FeSe₂ HNCs) are successfully designed and fabricated as a remarkable positive electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors. The bimetallic CoSe₂/FeSe₂ HNC nanostructures can have increased active sites and short electron-ion diffusion pathways. Bimetallic CoSe₂/FeSe₂ HNCs@NiF as a positive electrode showed efficient supercapacitive properties with a great specific capacity of 332.75 mA h g^-1 (1197.90 C g^-1) at 1 A g^-1, retaining 80.61% of its initial capacity at 20 A g^-1, considerable longevity (91.47% of its initial capacity after 10 000 cycles) and an excellent coulombic efficiency of 98.49%. Also, the designed and fabricated CoSe₂/FeSe₂ HNCs@NiF||AC@NiF hybrid supercapacitor device using bimetallic CoSe₂/FeSe₂ HNCs@NiF (positive electrode) and activated carbon@NiF (AC, negative electrode) exhibited an efficient energy density of 63.62 W h kg^-1 and a superior durability of 91.14% after 10 000 cycles.

Facile Synthesis of Ag/AgVO3/N-rGO Hybrid Nanocomposites for Electrochemical Detection of Levofloxacin for Complex Biological Samples Using Screen-Printed Carbon Paste Electrodes

Silver vanadate nanorods (β-AgVO₃) with silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) decorated on the surface of the rods were synthesized by using simple hydrothermal technique and later anchored onto nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) to make a novel nanocomposite. Experimental analyses were carried out to identify the electronic configuration by X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, which revealed monoclinic patterns of the C12/m1 space group with Wulff construction forming beta silver vanadate (β-AgVO₃) crystals with optical density and phase transformations. Ag nucleation showed consistent results with metallic formation and electronic changes occurring in [AgO₅] and [AgO₃] clusters. Transmission electron microscopy and field-emission scanning electron microscopy with elemental mapping and EDX analysis of the morphology reveals the nanorod structure for β-AgVO₃ with AgNPs on the surface and sheets for N-rGO. Additionally, a novel electrochemical sensor is constructed by using Ag/AgVO₃/N-rGO on screen-printed carbon paste electrodes for the detection of antiviral drug levofloxacin (LEV) which is used as a primary antibiotic in controlling COVID-19. Using differential pulse voltammetry, LEV is determined with a low detection limit of 0.00792 nm for a linear range of 0.09-671 μM with an ultrahigh sensitivity of 152.19 μA μM^-1 cm^-2. Furthermore, modified electrode performance is tested by real-time monitoring using biological and river samples.

Metallic Transition Metal Dichalcogenides of Group VIB: Preparation, Stabilization, and Energy Applications

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) of group VIB have been widely used in the realms of energy storage and conversions. Along with the existence of semiconducting states, their metallic phases have recently attracted numerous attentions owing to their fascinating physical and chemical properties. Many efforts have been devoted to obtain metallic TMDs with high purity and yield. Nevertheless, such metallic phase is thermodynamically metastable and tends to convert into semiconducting phase, which necessitates the exploration over effective strategies to ensure the stability. In this review, typical fabrication routes are introduced and those critical factors during preparation are elaborately discussed. Moreover, the stabilized strategies are summarized with concrete examples highlighting the key mechanisms toward efficient stabilization. Finally, emerging energy applications are overviewed. This review presents comprehensive research status of metallic group VIB TMDs, aiming to facilitate further scientific investigations and promote future practical applications in the fields of energy storage and conversion.

A hierarchical porous P-doped carbon electrode through hydrothermal carbonization of pomelo valves for high-performance supercapacitors

Porous carbon materials are synthesized from pomelo valves by the hydrothermal activation of H3PO4 followed by simple carbonization. The as-synthesized hierarchically porous carbon electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance of 966.4 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and an ultra-high stability of 95.6% even after 10 000 cycles. Moreover, the supercapacitor also demonstrates a maximum energy of 36.39 W h kg-1 and a maximum power of 33.33 kW kg-1 with an energy retention of 25.56 W h kg-1, which paves the way for the development of high-performance, green supercapacitors for advanced energy storage systems.

Cobalt-tungsten diselenide-supported nickel foam as a battery-type positive electrode for an asymmetric supercapacitor device: comparison with various MWSe2 (M = Ni, Cu, Zn, and Mn) on the structural and capacitance characteristics

New exploration in nanomaterial research has been greatly encouraged so as to discover active electrode materials with extraordinary properties and performances. In this report, we demonstrated the synthesis of different transition metal-incorporated MWSe2 (M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Mn) and studied them using various characterization techniques. Subsequently, the proposed bimetallic chalcogenides were successfully applied as the active electrode materials for pseudocapacitor applications. The results of the electrochemical studies showed that CoWSe2 exhibited a higher specific capacitance of 3309.58 F g-1 at a constant applied current density of 1.35 A g-1, which is 1.07, 1.76, 2.04, 8.7, and 12.28-fold higher than that of NiWSe2, CuWSe2, ZnWSe2, MnWSe2, and pristine WSe2, respectively. The interconnected nanosheet structure with voids facilitates rich active sites for efficient electrolyte uptake and superior charge transfer during the faradaic redox reaction. In addition, the cycle stability of CoWSe2/NF was studied and the retention capacitance of about 82.1% was recorded, which is higher than that of NiWSe2 (60.4%), CuWSe2 (50.12%), ZnWSe2 (46.44%), MnWSe2 (40.12%), and pristine WSe2 (31.2%). Owing to the higher specific capacitance and cycle stability, CoWSe2 was proposed as a battery-type electrode material for the fabrication of an asymmetric device. The fabricated CoWSe2//AC device provided excellent energy density and power density of 182.54 W h kg-1 and 2810.81 W kg-1, respectively, at 3.51 A g-1. Based on these properties, the proposed research and studies can provide a way for the profound development of 2D-layered metal chalcogenides for energy storage applications.

A label-free electrochemical aptasensor based on 3D porous CS/rGO/GCE for acetamiprid residue detection

A novel label-free electrochemical aptasensor was fabricated based on a three-dimensional porous electrode (3D-CS/rGO/GCE) for the detection of acetamiprid residues. The sensing signal was generated by the DNA itself. The porous electrode was prepared by electrodeposition in situ and characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). These results indicated that the porous electrode has a uniform nanoporous structure, high active area, and excellent conductivity, leading to improve the transmission efficiency of current signals. The 3D-CS/rGO/GCE was used to increase a load of acetamiprid aptamer on the electrode. Meanwhile, DNA self-assembly strategy was used to further increase the DNA amounts. Thus the electrochemical current was amplified significantly due to increased phosphate group amounts by the above synergistic effect. The determination of acetamiprid residues using square wave voltammetry (SWV) showed good sensitivity, with the linear range from 0.1 pM to 0.1 μM and the detection limit was 71.2 fM. The label-free electrochemical aptasensor was also used to detect acetamiprid residues in tea samples with satisfactory results.
