Does Coherence Affect the Multielectron Oxygen Reduction Reaction?

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the key for oxygen-based respiration and the operation of fuel cells. It involves the transmission of two pairs of electrons. We probed what type of interaction between the electrons is required to enable their efficient transfer into the oxygen. We show experimentally that the transfer of the electrons is controlled by the "hidden property" and present a theoretical model suggesting that it is related to coherent phase relations between the two electrons. Using spin polarization electrochemical measurements, with electrodes coated with different thicknesses of chiral coating, we confirm the special relation between the electrons. This relation is destroyed by multiple scattering events that result in the formation of hydrogen peroxide, which indicates a reduction in the ORR efficiency. Another indication for the possible role of coherence is the fluctuations in the reaction efficiency as a function of thickness of the chiral coated electrode.

Molecular Rectifiers with a Very High Rectification Ratio Enabled by Oxidative Damage in Double-Stranded DNA

In this work, we report a novel strategy to construct highly efficient molecular diodes using oxidatively damaged DNA molecules. Being exposed to several endogenous and exogenous events, DNA suffers from constant oxidative damage, leading to the oxidation of guanine to 8-oxoguanine (8oxoG). Here, we study the charge migration properties of native and oxidatively damaged DNA using a multiscale multiconfigurational methodology comprising molecular dynamics, density functional theory, and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. We perform a comprehensive study to understand the effect of different concentrations and locations of 8oxoG in a dsDNA sequence on its charge-transport properties and find tunable rectifier properties having potential applications in molecular electronics such as molecular switches and molecular rectifiers. We also discover the negative differential resistance properties of the fully oxidized Drew-Dickerson sequence. The presence of 8oxoG guanine leads to the trapping of charge, thus operating as a charge sink, which reveals how oxidized guanine saves the rest of the genome from further oxidative damage.

Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity and Its Implications for Biological Functions

Chirality in life has been preserved throughout evolution. It has been assumed that the main function of chirality is its contribution to structural properties. In the past two decades, however, it has been established that chiral molecules possess unique electronic properties. Electrons that pass through chiral molecules, or even charge displacements within a chiral molecule, do so in a manner that depends on the electron's spin and the molecule's enantiomeric form. This effect, referred to as chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS), has several important implications for the properties of biosystems. Among these implications, CISS facilitates long-range electron transfer, enhances bio-affinities and enantioselectivity, and enables efficient and selective multi-electron redox processes. In this article, we review the CISS effect and some of its manifestations in biological systems. We argue that chirality is preserved so persistently in biology not only because of its structural effect, but also because of its important function in spin polarizing electrons. Electron ratcheting in self-assembled soft matter

Ratcheted multi-step hopping electron transfer systems can plausibly produce directional charge transport over very large distances without requiring a source-drain voltage bias. We examine molecular strategies to realize ratcheted charge transport based on multi-step charge hopping, and we illustrate two ratcheting mechanisms with examples based on DNA structures. The charge transport times and currents that may be generated in these assemblies are also estimated using kinetic simulations. The first ratcheting mechanism described for nanoscale systems requires local electric fields on the 10⁹ V/m scale to realize nearly 100% population transport. The second ratcheting mechanism for even larger systems, based on electrochemical gating, is estimated to generate currents as large as 0.1 pA for DNA structures that are a few μm in length with a gate voltage of about 5 V, a magnitude comparable to currents measured in DNA wires at the nanoscale when a source-drain voltage bias of similar magnitude is applied, suggesting an approach to considerably extend the distance range over which DNA charge transport devices may operate.
