One-Step Preparation of Fe3O4/Nanochitin Magnetic Hydrogels with Remolding Ability by Ammonia Vapor Diffusion Gelation for Osteosarcoma Therapy

Adsorbents prepared from epoxy-based porous materials of microcrystalline cellulose for excellent adsorption of anionic and cationic dyes

It reported a porous material prepared from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), to achieve rapid preparation of adsorbents. The porous material was characterized by several tools including 1H NMR, FTIR, XPS, and SEM. Two adsorbents were prepared and subjected to adsorption experiments. Dye adsorption experiments show that the adsorption driving is electrostatic interactions and the process is chemisorption. The maximum capacity of Microcrystalline cellulose-g-Poly (glycidyl methacrylate)-Tannins (MPT) reached 191.3 (Methylene blue), 123.7 mg g-1 (Rhodamine B), and Microcrystalline cellulose-g-Poly (glycidyl methacrylate)-Lysine (MPL) attained 425.8 (Methylene blue), 480.7 mg g-1 (Methyl orange). The results were followed the pseudo-second-order (PSO) and agreed with the Langmuir fit model. Adsorption-desorption cycling experiments further indicate that the adsorbent possesses outstanding reproducibility. At last, epoxidized bio-porous materials are positive in the preparation of dye adsorbents with critical adsorption properties.

One pot synthesis of hydrophobic nanochitin aerogel via tert-butyl alcohol/water binary solvents as antibacterial and renewable oil superabsorbent

In this study, hydrophobic nanochitin aerogels are synthesized via one-pot synthesis strategy and subsequent freeze-drying technique, employing nanochitin, hexanal and formaldehyde as primary components. The tert-butyl alcohol (TBA)/water binary solvents are found efficient for well mixing of hydrophilic nanochitin and hydrophobic hexanal, which is fundamental for fabricating hydrophobic aerogels with water contact angle as high as 105°. Schiff base reaction between amino groups in nanochitin and aldehyde groups in hexanal is believed to be the main reason for the successful hydrophobization of nanochitin aerogels. Additionally, formaldehyde is employed to enhance the mechanical properties of aerogels via ice templated crosslinking technique. Nanochitin aerogels prepared in this work possess surface area as high as 237 m2 g-1, which are believed benefiting from the TBA/water binary solvents with lower density, smaller ice crystal and convenience in freeze-drying. The ultralow density, ultrahigh porosity, and hydrophobicity nature also lead to the advanced oil adsorption (as high as 210 g g-1) of nanochitin aerogels. The simple preparation process, nature sustainability and excellent adsorption performance is believed rendering nanochitin aerogels as a viable alternative for the remediation of oil spills.

Multifunctional magnetocaloric bone cement with a time-varying alkaline microenvironment for sequential bacterial inhibition, angiogenesis and osteogenesis

Repairing infected bone defects remains a severe challenge due to antibiotic abuse and recurrence. Hence, we modified magnetocaloric Fe3O4 nanoparticles and added them to magnesium calcium phosphate bone cement (MCPC) to fabricate multifunctional magnetic composites for sequential bacterial inhibition, angiogenesis and osteogenesis. Nevertheless, high doses of Mg ions and Fe ions were released from MCPC, which adversely affected osteogenesis. Thus, Fe3O4 was modified using gelatin according to the emulsification crosslinking method, which exhibited a controllable magnetocaloric effect and degradation behavior, and favorable anti-bacterial ability under the action of an alternating magnetic field (AMF). In the early stage, the residual MgO created a local strong alkaline microenvironment by hydrolysis, which inhibited the function and activity of S. aureus and E. coli. At the later stage, the MCPC composites were controllably degraded under the function of gelatin and maintained a long-term local slight alkaline microenvironment that promoted the osteogenic differentiation and mineralization of BMSCs. In vivo subcutaneous implantation experiments further indicated that MCPC composites showed good biocompatibility and facilitated angiogenesis, presenting a promising future in magnetic materials design and infectious bone defect repair.

Starch-g-Acrylic Acid/Magnetic Nanochitin Self-Healing Ferrogels as Flexible Soft Strain Sensors

Mechanically robust ferrogels with high self-healing ability might change the design of soft materials used in strain sensing. Herein, a robust, stretchable, magneto-responsive, notch insensitive, ionic conductive nanochitin ferrogel was fabricated with both autonomous self-healing and needed resilience for strain sensing application without the need for additional irreversible static chemical crosslinks. For this purpose, ferric (III) chloride hexahydrate and ferrous (II) chloride as the iron source were initially co-precipitated to create magnetic nanochitin and the co-precipitation was confirmed by FTIR and microscopic images. After that, the ferrogels were fabricated by graft copolymerisation of acrylic acid-g-starch with a monomer/starch weight ratio of 1.5. Ammonium persulfate and magnetic nanochitin were employed as the initiator and crosslinking/nano-reinforcing agents, respectively. The ensuing magnetic nanochitin ferrogel provided not only the ability to measure strain in real-time under external magnetic actuation but also the ability to heal itself without any external stimulus. The ferrogel may also be used as a stylus for a touch-screen device. Based on our findings, our research has promising implications for the rational design of multifunctional hydrogels, which might be used in applications such as flexible and soft strain sensors, health monitoring, and soft robotics.

Preparation of nanochitin hydrogel with adjustable inter-structure by sequencial genipin crosslinking and ice-templating under acid condition

In this work, genipin crosslinked chitin nanofibril hydrogels/cryogels were successfully prepared. Due to the acidic disperse nature of positively charged chitin fibrils, the pH nature for the chemical crosslinking between chitin nanofibrils and genipin was restricted under 5.0. The pH nature and crosslinking temperature were found greatly influence the efficient chemical crosslinking between chitin nanofibril and genipin. Further ice templated crosslinking was found effective enhancing the mechanical properties of resulting chitin nanofibril hydrogels/cryogels. The cryogel prepared by genipin-crosslinked DEChNs showed interconnected pores, presenting a state of stacking layers. In addition, the deposition of hydroxyapatite (HA) on the surface of chitin nanofibril scaffolds was found effective for improving chondrocyte attachments and growths. The cells viability indicated the good cell compatibility of the cryogel. All the results indicated that the cryogel prepared by genipin-crosslinked DEChNs showed a potential for tissue engineering applications.

Injectable hyaluronan/MnO2 nanocomposite hydrogel constructed by metal-hydrazide coordinated crosslink mineralization for relieving tumor hypoxia and combined phototherapy

Hydrogel-based drug delivery holds great promise in topical tumor treatment. However, the simple construction of multifunctional therapeutic hydrogels under physiological conditions is still a huge challenge. Herein, for the first time, a multifunctional hyaluronan/MnO₂ nanocomposite (HHM) hydrogel with injectable and self-healing capabilities was constructed under physiological conditions through innovative in situ mineralization-triggered Mn-hydrazide coordination crosslinking. The hydrogel formed from Mn²⁺ and hydrazided hyaluronan under optimized conditions exhibited a high elastic modulus >1 kPa, injectability, self-healing function, stimuli-responsiveness and catalase-like activity. In vitro and in vivo biological experiments demonstrated that our HHM hydrogel could not only efficiently relieve hypoxia by in situ catalytic decomposition of endogenous H₂O₂ into O₂ but also achieve synergistic photodynamic/photothermal therapy of 4T1 breast cancer in a mouse tumor model. This study presented a novel mineralization-driven metal-hydrazide coordination crosslinking approach and developed a multifunctional therapeutic platform for O₂-enhanced efficient topical dual-phototherapy of breast cancer.
