Aqueous Micelles as Solvent, Ligand, and Reaction Promoter in Catalysis

Water is considered to be the most sustainable and safest solvent. Micellar catalysis is a significant contributor to the chemistry in water. It promotes pathways involving water-sensitive intermediates and transient catalytic species under micelles' shielding effect while also replacing costly ligands and dipolar-aprotic solvents. However, there is a lack of critical information about micellar catalysis. This includes why it works better than traditional catalysis in organic solvents, why specific rules in micellar catalysis differ from those of conventional catalysis, and how the limitations of micellar catalysis can be addressed in the future. This Perspective aims to highlight the current gaps in our understanding of micellar catalysis and provide an analysis of designer surfactants' origin and essential components. This will also provide a fundamental understanding of micellar catalysis, including how aqueous micelles can simultaneously perform multiple functions such as solvent, ligand, and reaction promoter.

Sustainable formulation polymers for home, beauty and personal care: challenges and opportunities

As society moves towards a net-zero future, the need to adopt more sustainable polymers is well understood, and as well as plastics, less visible formulation polymers should also be included within this shift. As researchers, industries and consumers move towards more sustainable products there is a clear need to define what sustainability means in fast moving consumer goods and how it can be considered at the design stage. In this perspective key challenges in achieving sustainable formulation polymers are highlighted, and opportunities to overcome them are presented.

Glycine N-Thiocarboxyanhydride: A Key to Glycine-Rich Protein Mimics

Glycine-rich proteins (GRPs) containing a high content of glycine residues (>30%) possess unique structural stability. However, the controllable synthesis of glycine-rich poly(amino acid)s (PAAs) to mimic GRPs has not been realized yet due to the poor solubility of polyglycine segments. We developed a novel method to synthesize glycine-rich PAAs via the controlled ring-opening copolymerization of glycine-N-thiocarboxyanhydrides (Gly-NTA) with sarcosine-N-carboxyanhydride and ε-Cbz-l-lysine-N-carboxyanhydride. The random copolymerization is evidenced by a kinetic study that shows that the propagation rate constant of Gly-NTA is close to those of comonomers. The copolymers exhibit predictable molecular weights between 4.5 and 24.6 kg/mol and tunable glycine incorporation, varying from 10.3 to 59.2%. Poly(Gly-r-Sar) samples with various glycine contents form nanoparticles or a hydrogel in water. Remarkably, the β-sheet folding of poly(Gly-r-Lys) remains intact in a neutral environment where the amine groups are protonated. Overall, the strategy paves the way to engineer glycine-rich PAAs and thereby expands their applications.

Sustainable Design of Structural and Functional Polymers for a Circular Economy

To achieve a sustainable circular economy, polymer production must start transitioning to recycled and biobased feedstock and accomplish CO₂ emission neutrality. This is not only true for structural polymers, such as in packaging or engineering applications, but also for functional polymers in liquid formulations, such as adhesives, lubricants, thickeners or dispersants. At their end of life, polymers must be either collected and recycled via a technical pathway, or be biodegradable if they are not collectable. Advances in polymer chemistry and applications, aided by computational material science, open the way to addressing these issues comprehensively by designing for recyclability and biodegradability. This Review explores how scientific progress, together with emerging regulatory frameworks, societal expectations and economic boundary conditions, paint pathways for the transformation towards a circular economy of polymers.

Introducing Savie: A Biodegradable Surfactant Enabling Chemo- and Biocatalysis and Related Reactions in Recyclable Water

Savie is a biodegradable surfactant derived from vitamin E and polysarcosine (PSar) developed for use in organic synthesis in recyclable water. This includes homogeneous catalysis (including examples employing only ppm levels of catalyst), heterogeneous catalysis, and biocatalytic transformations, including a multistep chemoenzymatic sequence. Use of Savie frequently leads to significantly higher yields than do conventional surfactants, while obviating the need for waste-generating organic solvents.

Advance in Hybrid Peptides Synthesis

Hybrid peptides with heterogeneous backbone are a class of peptide mimics with adjustable proteolytic stability obtained from incorporating unnatural amino acid residues into peptide backbone. α/β-peptides and peptide/peptoid hybrids are two types of hybrid peptides that are widely studied for diverse applications, and several synthetic methods have been developed. In this mini review, the advance in hybrid peptide synthesis is summarized, including solution-phase method, solid-phase method, and novel polymerization method. Conventional solution-phase method and solid-phase method generally result in oligomers with defined sequences, while polymerization methods have advantages in preparing peptide hybrid polymers with high molecular weight with simple operation and low cost. In addition, the future development of polymerization method to realize the control of the peptide hybrid polymer sequence is discussed.

Host defense peptide mimicking cyclic peptoid polymers exerting strong activity against drug-resistant bacteria

Extensive use of antibiotics accelerates the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria and related infections. Host defense peptides (HDPs) have been studied as promising and potential therapeutic candidates. However, their clinical applications of HDPs are limited due to their high cost of synthesis and low stability upon proteolysis. Therefore, HDP mimics have become a new approach to address the challenge of bacterial resistance. In this work, we design the amphiphilic peptoid polymers by mimicking the positively charged and hydrophobic structures of HDPs and synthesize a series of cyclic peptoid polymers efficiently via the polymerization on α-amino acid N-substituted glycine N-carboxyanhydrides (α-NNCAs) using 1,8-diazabicycloundec-7-ene (DBU) as the initiator. The optimal cyclic peptoid polymer, poly(Naeg_0.7Npfbg_0.3)₂₀, displays strong antibacterial activities against drug-resistant bacteria, but low hemolysis and cytotoxicity. In addition, the mode-of-action study indicates that the antibacterial mechanism is associated with bacterial membrane interaction. Our study implies that HDP mimicking cyclic peptoid polymers have potential application in treating drug-resistant bacterial infections.
