Robust Natural Polyphenolic Adhesives against Various Harsh Environments

Lignin-Based Antioxidant Hydrogel Patch for the Management of Atopic Dermatitis by Mitigating Oxidative Stress in the Skin

Atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic skin condition characterized by itching, redness, and inflammation, is closely associated with heightened levels of endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the skin. ROS can contribute to the onset and progression of AD through oxidative stress, which leads to the release of proinflammatory cytokines, T-cell differentiation, and the exacerbation of skin symptoms. In this study, we aim to develop a therapeutic antioxidant hydrogel patch for the potential treatment of AD using lignin, a biomass waste material. Lignin contains polyphenol groups that enable it to scavenge ROS and exhibit antioxidant properties. The lignin hydrogel patches, possessing optimized mechanical properties through the control of the lignin and cross-linker ratio, demonstrated high ROS-scavenging capabilities. Furthermore, the lignin hydrogel demonstrated excellent biocompatibility with the skin, exhibiting beneficial properties in protecting human keratinocytes under high oxidative conditions. When applied to an AD mouse model, the hydrogel patch effectively reduced epidermal thickness in inflamed regions, decreased mast cell infiltration, and regulated inflammatory cytokine levels. These findings collectively suggest that lignin serves as a therapeutic hydrogel patch for managing AD by modulating oxidative stress through its ROS-scavenging ability.

Adhesive Zwitterionic Poly(ionic liquid) with Unprecedented Organic Solvent Resistance

The resistance of adhesives to organic solvents is of paramount importance in diverse industries. Unfortunately, many currently available adhesives exhibit either weak intermolecular chain interactions, resulting in insufficient resistance to organic solvents, or possess a permanent covalent crosslinked network, impeding recyclability. This study introduces an innovative approach to address this challenge by formulating zwitterionic poly(ionic liquid) (ZPIL) derivatives with robust dipole-dipole interactions, incorporating sulfonic anions and imidazolium cations. Due to its unique dynamic and electrostatic self-crosslinking structure, the ZPIL exhibits significant adhesion to various substrates and demonstrates excellent recyclability even after multiple adhesion tests. Significantly, ZPIL exhibits exceptional adhesion stability across diverse nonpolar and polar organic solvents, including ionic liquids, distinguishing itself from nonionic polymers and conventional poly(ionic liquid)s. Its adhesive performance remains minimally affected even after prolonged exposure to soaking conditions. The study presents a promising solution for the design of highly organic solvent-resistant materials for plastics, coatings, and adhesives.

Natural polyphenolic antibacterial bio-adhesives for infected wound healing

Bio-adhesives used clinically, commonly have the ability to fill surgical voids and support wound healing, but which are devoid of antibacterial activity, and thus, could not meet the particular needs of the infected wound site. Herein, a series of natural polyphenolic antibacterial bio-adhesives were prepared via simple mixing and heating of polyphenols and acid anhydrides without any solvent or catalyst. Upon the acid anhydride ring opening and acylation reactions, various natural polyphenolic bio-adhesives could adhere to various substrates (i.e., tissue, wood, glass, rubber, paper, plastic, and metal) based on multi-interactions. Moreover, these bio-adhesives showed excellent antibacterial and anti-infection activity, rapid hemostatic performance and appropriate biodegradability, which could be widely used in promoting bacterial infection wound healing and hot burn infection wound repair. This work could provide a new strategy for strong adhesives using naturally occurring molecules, and provide a method for the preparation of novel multifunctional wound dressings for infected wound healing.

Perforin-Mimicking Molecular Drillings Enable Macroporous Hollow Lignin Spheres for Performance-Configurable Materials

Despite the first observations that the perforin can punch holes in target cells for live/dead cycles in the human immune system over 110 years ago, emulating this behavior in materials science remains challenging. Here, a perforin-mimicking molecular drilling strategy is employed to engineer macroporous hollow lignin spheres as performance-configurable catalysts, adhesives, and gels. Using a toolbox of over 20 molecular compounds, the local curvature of amphiphilic lignin is modulated to generate macroporous spheres with hole sizes ranging from 0 to 100 nm. Multiscale control is precisely achieved through noncovalent assembly directing catalysis, synthesis, and polymerization. Exceptional performance mutations correlate with the changes in hole size, including an increase in catalytic efficiency from 50% to 100%, transition from nonstick synthetics to ultrastrong adhesives (adhesion ≈18.3 MPa, exceeding that of classic epoxies), and transformation of viscous sols to tough nanogels. Thus, this study provides a robust and versatile noncovalent route for mimicking perforin-induced structural variations in cells, representing a significant stride toward the exquisite orchestration of assemblies over multiple length scales.

Bioadhesive Hyaluronic Acid-Based Hydrogels for Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injuries (SCI) have devastating physical, psychological, and psychosocial consequences for patients. One challenge of nerve tissue repair is the lack of a natural extracellular matrix (ECM) that guides the regenerating axons. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a major ECM component and plays a fundamental role in facilitating lesion healing. Herein, we developed HA-based adhesive hydrogels by modification of HA with dopamine, a mussel-inspired compound with excellent adhesive properties in an aqueous environment. The hydrogels were loaded with the anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen and the response of neuronal cells (SH-SY5Y) was evaluated in terms of viability, morphology, and adhesion. The obtained results suggested that the developed materials can bridge lesion gaps, guide axonal growth, and simultaneously act as a vehicle for the delivery of bioactive compounds.

Solvent-Resistant Adhesive Gel with Thermal Post-Tunability

Adhesives have received extensive attention in flexible bioelectronics, wearable electronic medical devices, and biofuel cells. However, it is a challenge to achieve late regulation of performance once polymer-based gels are formed. Here, a double-network organogel composed of a hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer network and a polyamide acid network was successfully prepared. In diverse liquid environments (including isopropyl alcohol, glycerol, epichlorohydrin, n-propanol, dichloromethane, triethanolamine, ethanol absolute, hydrogen peroxide, and ethyl acetate), the organogel adhesive demonstrated remarkable properties. It exhibits a strong tensile strength of 200 kPa, a high fracture strain reaching 560%, and an impressive adhesion strength of 38 kPa. In addition, the organogel demonstrates exceptional adhesive properties toward polytetrafluoroethylene, plastics, metals, rubber, and glass. Note that the organogel could also regulate adhesive and tough performance by thermally triggering a cyclization reaction even after the organogel has been formed. The strategy provides a new idea for designing soft materials with post-tunability.

Upcycling Waste Thermosetting Polyimide Resins into High-Performance and Sustainable Low-Temperature-Resistance Adhesives

Thermosetting polyimide (PI) has attracted extensive attention for its excellent properties, but the approaches to its end-of-life management are not sustainable, posing great threat to the ecosystem. Herein, this work proposes a mild, sustainable, and full recovery path for recycling waste carbon fiber reinforced phenylethynyl end-capped PI resin composites. In addition to recycling reaction reagent and woven carbon fiber, degraded products (DPETI) can be fully and directly used as high-performance and sustainable adhesives. DPETI exhibits strong adhesion to various surfaces, with a maximum adhesion strength of 1.84 MPa. Due to the strong supramolecular polymerization behavior without solvent dependence, DPETI demonstrates higher adhesive strength of 2.22 MPa in the extreme environment (-196 °C), which is maintained even after 10 cycles. This work sparks a new thinking for plastic wastes recycling that is to convert unrecyclable wastes into new and sustainable materials, which has the potential to establish new links within circular economies and influence the development of materials science.

Natural polyphenol-based nanoparticles for the treatment of iron-overload disease

Iron-overload diseases are characterized by a variety of symptoms resulting from excessive iron stores, oxidative stress and consequent end-organ damage. Deferoxamine (DFO) is an iron-chelator that can protect tissues from iron-induced damage. However, its application is limited due to its low stability and weak free radical scavenging ability. Herein, natural polyphenols have been employed to enhance the protective efficacy of DFO through the construction of supramolecular dynamic amphiphiles, which self-assemble into spherical nanoparticles with excellent scavenging capacity against both iron (III) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). This class of natural polyphenols-assisted nanoparticles was found to exhibit enhanced protective efficacy both in vitro in an iron-overload cell model and in vivo in an intracerebral hemorrhage model. This strategy of constructing natural polyphenols- assisted nanoparticles could benefit the treatment of iron-overload related diseases with excessive accumulation of toxic or harmful substances.

Robust and multifunctional natural polyphenolic composites for water remediation

The scarcity of clean water has become a global environmental problem which constrains the development of public health, economy, and sustainability. In recent years, natural polyphenols have drawn increasing interests as promising platforms towards diverse water remediation composites and devices, owing to their abundant and renewable resource in nature, highly active surface chemistry, and multifunctionality. This review aims to summarize the most recent advances and highlights of natural polyphenol-based composite materials (e.g., nanofibers, membranes, particles, and hydrogels) for water remediation, by focusing on their structural and functional features, as well as their diversified applications including membrane filtration, solar distillation, adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, and disinfection. Finally, the future challenges in this field are also prospected. It is anticipated that this review will provide new opportunities towards the future development of natural polyphenols and other kinds of naturally occurring molecules in water purification applications.
