Hybrid Oleate-Iodide Ligand Shell for Air-Stable PbSe Nanocrystals and Superstructures

Colloidal Synthesis of P-Type Zn3As2 Nanocrystals

Zinc pnictides, particularly Zn3As2, hold significant promise for optoelectronic applications owing to their intrinsic p-type behavior and appropriate bandgaps. However, despite the outstanding properties of colloidal Zn3As2 nanocrystals, research in this area is lacking because of the absence of suitable precursors, occurrence of surface oxidation, and intricacy of the crystal structures. In this study, a novel and facile solution-based synthetic approach is presented for obtaining highly crystalline p-type Zn3As2 nanocrystals with accurate stoichiometry. By carefully controlling the feed ratio and reaction temperature, colloidal Zn3As2 nanocrystals are successfully obtained. Moreover, the mechanism underlying the conversion of As precursors in the initial phases of Zn3As2 synthesis is elucidated. Furthermore, these nanocrystals are employed as active layers in field-effect transistors that exhibit inherent p-type characteristics with native surface ligands. To enhance the charge transport properties, a dual passivation strategy is introduced via phase-transfer ligand exchange, leading to enhanced hole mobilities as high as 0.089 cm2 V-1 s-1. This study not only contributes to the advancement of nanocrystal synthesis, but also opens up new possibilities for previously underexplored p-type nanocrystal research.

Exploring Configurations of Nanocrystal Ligands Using Machine-Learned Force Fields

Semiconducting nanocrystals passivated with organic ligands have emerged as a powerful platform for light harvesting, light-driven chemical reactions, and sensing. Due to their complexity and size, little structural information is available from experiments, making these systems challenging to model computationally. Here, we develop a machine-learned force field trained on DFT data and use it to investigate the surface chemistry of a PbS nanocrystal interfaced with acetate ligands. In doing so, we go beyond considering individual local minimum energy geometries and, importantly, circumvent a precarious issue associated with the assumption of a single assigned atomic partial charge for each element in a nanocrystal, independent of its structural position. We demonstrate that the carboxylate ligands passivate the metal-rich surfaces by adopting a very wide range of "tilted-bridge" and "bridge" geometries and investigate the corresponding ligand IR spectrum. This work illustrates the potential of machine-learned force fields to transform computational modeling of these materials.

Atomically dispersed Pb ionic sites in PbCdSe quantum dot gels enhance room-temperature NO2 sensing

Atmospheric NO2 is of great concern due to its adverse effects on human health and the environment, motivating research on NO2 detection and remediation. Existing low-cost room-temperature NO2 sensors often suffer from low sensitivity at the ppb level or long recovery times, reflecting the trade-off between sensor response and recovery time. Here, we report an atomically dispersed metal ion strategy to address it. We discover that bimetallic PbCdSe quantum dot (QD) gels containing atomically dispersed Pb ionic sites achieve the optimal combination of strong sensor response and fast recovery, leading to a high-performance room-temperature p-type semiconductor NO2 sensor as characterized by a combination of ultra-low limit of detection, high sensitivity and stability, fast response and recovery. With the help of theoretical calculations, we reveal the high performance of the PbCdSe QD gel arises from the unique tuning effects of Pb ionic sites on NO2 binding at their neighboring Cd sites.

Electronic properties of atomically coherent square PbSe nanocrystal superlattice resolved by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy

Rock-salt lead selenide nanocrystals can be used as building blocks for large scale square superlattices via two-dimensional assembly of nanocrystals at a liquid-air interface followed by oriented attachment. Here we report Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy measurements of the local density of states of an atomically coherent superlattice with square geometry made from PbSe nanocrystals. Controlled annealing of the sample permits the imaging of a clean structure and to reproducibly probe the band gap and the valence hole and conduction electron states. The measured band gap and peak positions are compared to the results of optical spectroscopy and atomistic tight-binding calculations of the square superlattice band structure. In spite of the crystalline connections between nanocrystals that induce significant electronic couplings, the electronic structure of the superlattices remains very strongly influenced by the effects of disorder and variability.
