Abstract
Autonomous micro/nanorobots capable of performing programmed missions are at the forefront of next-generation micromachinery. These small robotic systems are predominantly constructed using functional components sourced from micro- and nanoscale materials; therefore, combining them with various advanced materials represents a pivotal direction toward achieving a higher level of intelligence and multifunctionality. This review provides a comprehensive overview of advanced materials for innovative micro/nanorobotics, focusing on the five families of materials that have witnessed the most rapid advancements over the last decade: two-dimensional materials, metal-organic frameworks, semiconductors, polymers, and biological cells. Their unique physicochemical, mechanical, optical, and biological properties have been integrated into micro/nanorobots to achieve greater maneuverability, programmability, intelligence, and multifunctionality in collective behaviors. The design and fabrication methods for hybrid robotic systems are discussed based on the material categories. In addition, their promising potential for powering motion and/or (multi-)functionality is described and the fundamental principles underlying them are explained. Finally, their extensive use in a variety of applications, including environmental remediation, (bio)sensing, therapeutics, etc., and remaining challenges and perspectives for future research are discussed.

Abstract
Nanoplastics are considered an emerging organic persistent pollutant with possible severe long-term implications for the environment and human health; therefore, their remediation is of paramount importance. However, detecting and determining the concentration of nanoparticles in water is challenging and time-consuming due to their small size. In this work, we present a universal yet simple method for the detection and quantification of nanoplastics to monitor their removal from water using magnetic nanorobots. Nanoplastics were stained with a hydrophobic fluorescent dye to enable the use of photoluminescence techniques for their detection and quantification. Magnetic nanorobotic tools were employed to capture and subsequently remove the nanoplastics from contaminated waters. We demonstrated that nanorobots can capture and remove more than 90% of the nanoplastics from an aqueous solution within 120 min. This work shows that easy-to-use common fluorescent dyes combined with photoluminescence spectroscopy methods can be used as an alternative method for the detection and quantification of nanoplastics in water environments and swarming magnetic nanorobots for efficient capture and removal. These methods hold great potential for future research to improve the quantification and removal of nanoplastics in water, and it will ultimately reduce their harmful impact on the environment and human health.

Abstract
Autonomous nanorobots represent an advanced tool for precision therapy to improve therapeutic efficacy. However, current nanorobotic designs primarily rely on inorganic materials with compromised biocompatibility and limited biological functions. Here, we introduce enzyme-powered bacterial outer membrane vesicle (OMV) nanorobots. The immobilized urease on the OMV membrane catalyzes the decomposition of bioavailable urea, generating effective propulsion for nanorobots. This OMV nanorobot preserves the unique features of OMVs, including intrinsic biocompatibility, immunogenicity, versatile surface bioengineering for desired biofunctionalities, capability of cargo loading and protection. We present OMV-based nanorobots designed for effective tumor therapy by leveraging the membrane properties of OMVs. These involve surface bioengineering of robotic body with cell-penetrating peptide for tumor targeting and penetration, which is further enhanced by active propulsion of nanorobots. Additionally, OMV nanorobots can effectively safeguard the loaded gene silencing tool, small interfering RNA (siRNA), from enzymatic degradation. Through systematic in vitro and in vivo studies using a rodent model, we demonstrate that these OMV nanorobots substantially enhanced siRNA delivery and immune stimulation, resulting in the utmost effectiveness in tumor suppression when juxtaposed with static groups, particularly evident in the orthotopic bladder tumor model. This OMV nanorobot opens an inspiring avenue to design advanced medical robots with expanded versatility and adaptability, broadening their operation scope in practical biomedical domains.

Abstract
Synthetic micro/nanomotors have been extensively exploited over the past decade to achieve active transportation. This interest is a result of their broad range of potential applications, from environmental remediation to nanomedicine. Nevertheless, it still remains a challenge to build a fast-moving biodegradable polymeric nanomotor. Here we present a light-propelled nanomotor by introducing gold nanoparticles (Au NP) onto biodegradable bowl-shaped polymersomes (stomatocytes) via electrostatic and hydrogen bond interactions. These biodegradable nanomotors show controllable motion and remarkable velocities of up to 125 μm s-1. This unique behavior is explained via a thorough three-dimensional characterization of the nanomotor, particularly the size and the spatial distribution of Au NP, with cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET). Our in-depth quantitative 3D analysis reveals that the motile features of these nanomotors are caused by the nonuniform distribution of Au NPs on the outer surface of the stomatocyte along the z-axial direction. Their excellent motile features are exploited for active cargo delivery into living cells. This study provides a new approach to develop robust, biodegradable soft nanomotors with application potential in biomedicine.

Abstract
The design of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors has been greatly enhanced in recent years by the advancements in the production and integration of nanostructures, leading to more compact and efficient devices. There have been reports of novel SPR sensors having distinct nanostructures, either as signal amplification tags like gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) or as sensing substrate-like two-dimensional (2D) materials including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), MXene, black phosphorus (BP), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and antimonene. Such 2D-based SPR biosensors offer advantages over conventional sensors due to significant increases in their sensitivity with a good figure of merit and limit of detection (LOD). Due to their atomically thin structure, improved sensitivity, and sophisticated functionalization capabilities, 2D materials can open up new possibilities in the field of healthcare, particularly in point-of-care diagnostics, environmental and food monitoring, homeland security protection, clinical diagnosis and treatment, and flexible or transient bioelectronics. The present study articulates an in-depth analysis of the most recent developments in 2D material-based SPR sensor technology. Moreover, in-depth research of 2D materials, their integration with optoelectronic technology for a new sensing platform, and the predicted and experimental outcomes of various excitation approaches are highlighted, along with the principles of SPR biosensors. Furthermore, the review projects the potential prospects and future trends of these emerging materials-based SPR biosensors to advance in clinical diagnosis, healthcare biochemical, and biological applications.

Abstract
Jumping crystals of racemic mixtures of asparagine monohydrate have been presented in this contribution to emphasize the key role of molecular chirality in governing the direction of macroscopic motions. When heated at the specific faces of the single crystals, a pair of enantiomorphs jump in opposite directions, which are further utilized for chiral resolution. The hydrogen-bonded networks between asparagine molecules in a specific direction provide oriented channels for the escape of water molecules during the dehydration, serving as a foundation for the directional crystal jumping. Our findings not only lay the foundation for the future creation of directed actuation systems based on dynamic crystals but shall also guide the efforts to reveal the correlation between chirality and motion across diverse realms of knowledge.

Abstract
As the fourth full-nitrogen structure, the pentazolate anion (cyclo-N5 - ) was highly coveted for decades. In 2017, the first air-stable non-metal pentazolate salt, (N5 )6 (H3 O)3 (NH4 )4 Cl, was obtained, representing a milestone in this field. As the latest member of the azole family, cyclo-N5 - is comprised of five nitrogen atoms. Although significant attention has been paid to the potential of cyclo-N5 - as an energetic material, its poor thermostability hinders any practical application. However, the unique ring structure and multiple coordination capability of cyclo-N5 - provide a platform for the fabrication of various structures, among which pentasil-zeolite topologies are the most intriguing. In addition, the introduction of structure-directing auxiliaries enables the self-assembly of diverse topological architectures, potentially imparting cyclo-N5 - with the potential to impact wide-ranging areas of coordination chemistry and topology. In this minireview, different pentasil-zeolite topologies based on metal-pentazolate frameworks are evaluated. To date, three zeolitic and zeolite-like topologies have been reported, namely the melanophlogite (MEP), chibaite (MTN), and unj topologies. The MEP topology consists of two nanocages, Na20 N60 and Na24 N60 , whereas the MTN topology contains Na20 N60 and Na28 N80 nanocages. Furthermore, the unj topology features multiple homochiral channels consisting of two helical chains. Various possible strategies for obtaining additional pentasil-zeolite topologies are also discussed.

Abstract
With the extensive use of antibiotics, resulting in increasingly serious problems of bacterial resistance, antimicrobial therapy has become a global concern. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are low-density porous coordination materials composed of metal ions and organic ligands, which can form composite materials with biomacromolecules such as proteins and polysaccharides. In recent years, MOFs and their derivatives have been widely used in the antibacterial field as efficient antibacterial agents. This review offers a detailed summary of the antibacterial applications of MOFs and their composites, and the different synthesis methods and antibacterial mechanisms of MOFs and MOF-based composites are briefly introduced. Finally, the challenges and prospects of MOFs-based antibacterial materials in the rapidly developing medical field were briefly discussed. We hope this review will provide new strategies for the medical application of MOFs-based antibacterial materials.

Abstract
Soft robotics is an emerging field showing immense potential for biomedical applications. This review summarizes recent advancements in soft robotics for in vitro and in vivo medical contexts. Their inherent flexibility, adaptability, and biocompatibility enable diverse capabilities from surgical assistance to minimally invasive diagnosis and therapy. Intelligent stimuli-responsive materials and bioinspired designs are enhancing functionality while improving biocompatibility. Additive manufacturing techniques facilitate rapid prototyping and customization. Untethered chemical, biological, and wireless propulsion methods are overcoming previous constraints to access new sites. Meanwhile, advances in tracking modalities like computed tomography, fluorescence and ultrasound imaging enable precision localization and control enable in vivo applications. While still maturing, soft robotics promises more intelligent, less invasive technologies to improve patient care. Continuing research into biocompatibility, power supplies, biomimetics, and seamless localization will help translate soft robots into widespread clinical practice.

Abstract
Ground-state destabilization is a promising strategy to modulate rotational barriers in amphidynamic crystals. Density functional theory studies of polar phenylenes installed as rotators in pillared paddle-wheel metal organic frameworks were performed to investigate the effects of ground-state destabilization on their rotational dynamics. We found that as the steric size of phenylene substituents increases, the ground-state destabilization effect is also increased. Specifically, a significant destabilization of the ground-state energy occurred as the size of the substituents increased, with values ranging from 2 to 11.7 kcal/mol. An evaluation of the effects of substituents on dipole-dipole interaction energies and rotational barriers suggests that it should be possible to engineer amphidynamic crystals where the dipole-dipole interaction energy becomes comparable to the rotational barriers. Notably, while pure dipole-dipole interaction energies reached values ranging from 0.6 to 2.4 kcal/mol, the inclusion of electronic and steric effects can alter dipolar orientations to significantly greater values. We propose that careful selection of polar substituents with different sizes may help create temperature-responsive materials with switchable collective polarization.

Abstract
In the past decade, micro- and nanomachines (MNMs) have made outstanding achievements in the fields of targeted drug delivery, tumor therapy, microsurgery, biological detection, and environmental monitoring and remediation. Researchers have made significant efforts to accelerate the rapid development of MNMs capable of moving through fluids by means of different energy sources (chemical reactions, ultrasound, light, electricity, magnetism, heat, or their combinations). However, the motion of MNMs is primarily investigated in confined two-dimensional (2D) horizontal setups. Furthermore, three-dimensional (3D) motion control remains challenging, especially for vertical movement and control, significantly limiting its potential applications in cargo transportation, environmental remediation, and biotherapy. Hence, an urgent need is to develop MNMs that can overcome self-gravity and controllably move in 3D spaces. This review delves into the latest progress made in MNMs with 3D motion capabilities under different manipulation approaches, discusses the underlying motion mechanisms, explores potential design concepts inspired by nature for controllable 3D motion in MNMs, and presents the available 3D observation and tracking systems.

Abstract
Traditional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based micro/nanomotors (MOFtors) can achieve three-dimensional (3D) motion mainly depending on noble metal (e.g., Pt), toxic fuels (e.g., hydrogen peroxide), and surfactants, or under external magnetic fields. In this study, light-driven MOFtors are constructed based on PCN-224(H) and regulated their photothermal and photochemical properties responding to the light of different wavelengths through porphyrin metalation. The resulting PCN-224(Fe) MOFtors presented a strong 3D motion at a maximum speed of 1234.9 ± 367.5 µm s-1 under visible light due to the various gradient fields by the photothermal and photochemical effects. Such MOFtors exhibit excellent water sterilization performance. Under optimal conditions, the PCN-224(Cu) MOFtors presented the best antibacterial performance of 99.4%, which improved by 23.4% compared to its static counterpart and 43.7% compared to static PCN-224(H). The underlying mechanism demonstrates that metal doping could increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and result in a more positive surface charge under light, which are short-distance effective sterilizing ingredients. Furthermore, the motion of MOFtors appears very important to extend the short-distance effective sterilization and thus synergistically improve the antibacterial performance. This work provides a new idea for preparing and developing light-driven MOFtors with multi-responsive properties.

Abstract
Both increasing demand for ultrasensitive detection in the scientific community and significant new breakthroughs in materials science field have inspired and promoted the development of new-generation multifunctional plasmonic sensing platforms by adopting promising plasmonic nanomaterials. Recently, high-quality surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors, assisted by two dimensional (2D) nanomaterials including 2D van der Waals (vdWs) materials (such as graphene/graphene oxide, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), phosphorene, antimonene, tellurene, MXenes, and metal oxides), 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), 2D hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs), and 2D optical metasurfaces, have emerged as a class of novel plasmonic sensing platforms that show unprecedented detection sensitivity and impressive performance. This review of recent progress in 2D nanomaterials-enhanced SPR platforms will highlight their compelling plasmonic enhancement features, working mechanisms, and design methodologies, as well as discuss illustrative practical applications. Hence, it is of great importance to describe the latest research progress in 2D nanomaterials-enhanced SPR sensing cases. In this review, we present some concepts of SPR enhanced by 2D nanomaterials, including the basic principles of SPR, signal modulation approaches, and working enhancement mechanisms for various 2D materials-enhanced SPR systems. In addition, we also demonstrate a detailed categorization of 2D nanomaterials-enhanced SPR sensing platforms and comment on their ability to realize ultrasensitive SPR detection. Finally, we conclude with future perspectives for exploring a new generation of 2D nanomaterials-based sensors.

Abstract
The intricate and delicate anatomy of the brain poses significant challenges for the treatment of cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, precise local drug delivery in hard-to-reach brain regions remains an urgent medical need. Microrobots offer potential solutions; however, their functionality in the brain remains restricted by limited imaging capabilities and complications within blood vessels, such as high blood flows, osmotic pressures, and cellular responses. Here, we introduce ultrasound-activated microrobots for in vivo navigation in brain vasculature. Our microrobots consist of lipid-shelled microbubbles that autonomously aggregate and propel under ultrasound irradiation. We investigate their capacities in vitro within microfluidic-based vasculatures and in vivo within vessels of a living mouse brain. These microrobots self-assemble and execute upstream motion in brain vasculature, achieving velocities up to 1.5 µm/s and moving against blood flows of ~10 mm/s. This work represents a substantial advance towards the therapeutic application of microrobots within the complex brain vasculature.

Abstract
Three-dimensional motion (especially in the Z-axis direction) of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based micromotors (MOFtors) is essential but still in its infancy. Herein, we propose a simple strategy for designing light-driven MOFtors that move in the Z-axis direction and efficiently kill Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The as-prepared polypyrrole nanoparticles (PPy NPs) with excellent photothermal properties are combined with ZIF-8 through a simple in situ encapsulation method, resulting in multi-wavelength photothermally-responsive MOFtors (PPy/ZIF-8). Under the irradiation of near-infrared (NIR)/ultraviolet (UV)/blue light, the MOFtors all exhibited negative phototaxis and high-speed motion behaviour with the highest speed of 2215 ± 338 μm s-1. In addition, it is proved that these MOFtors can slowly self-float up in an aqueous environment. The light irradiation will accelerate the upward movement of the MOFtors, and the time required for the MOFtors to move to the top is negatively correlated with the light intensity. Finally, efficient antibacterial performances (up to 98.89% against S. aureus) are achieved with these light-driven MOFtors owing to the boosted Zn2+ release by vigorous stirring motion and physical entrapment by the upward motion under light irradiation.

Abstract
Micromotors (MMs) are micro and nanoscale devices capable of converting energy into autonomous motion. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline materials that display exceptional properties such as high porosity, internal surface areas, and high biocompatibility. As such, MOFs have been used as active materials or building blocks for MMs. In this highlight, we describe the evolution of MOF-based MMs, focusing on the last 3 years. First, we covered the main propulsion mechanisms and designs, from catalytic to fuel-free MOF-based MMs. Secondly, we discuss recent applications of new fuel-free MOFs MM to give a critical overview of the current challenges of this blooming research field. The advantages and challenges discussed provide a useful guide for the design of the next generation MOF MMs toward real-world applications.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which possess a high degree of crystallinity and a large surface area with tunable inorganic nodes and organic linkers, exhibit high stimuli-responsiveness and molecular adsorption selectivity that enable various applications. The adsorption in MOFs changes the crystalline structure and elastic moduli. Thus, the coexistence of adsorbed/desorbed sites makes the host matrices elastically heterogeneous. However, the role of elastic heterogeneity in the adsorption-desorption transition has been overlooked. Here, we show the asymmetric role of elastic heterogeneity in the adsorption-desorption transition. We construct a minimal model incorporating adsorption-induced lattice expansion/contraction and an increase/decrease in the elastic moduli. We find that the transition is hindered by the entropic and energetic effects which become asymmetric in the adsorption process and desorption process, leading to the strong hysteretic nature of the transition. Furthermore, the adsorbed/desorbed sites exhibit spatially heterogeneous domain formation, implying that the domain morphology and interfacial area between adsorbed/desorbed sites can be controlled by elastic heterogeneity. Our results provide a theoretical guideline for designing soft porous crystals with tunable adsorption hysteresis and the dispersion and domain morphology of adsorbates using elastic heterogeneity.

Abstract
Dynamic crystalline materials have emerged as a unique category of condensed phase matter that combines crystalline lattice with components that display dynamic behavior in the solid state. This has involved a range of materials incorporating dynamic functional units in the form of stimuli-responsive molecular switches and machines, among others. In particular, it has been possible by relying on framework materials, such as porous molecular frameworks and other hybrid organic-inorganic systems that demonstrated potential for serving as scaffolds for dynamic molecular functions. As functional dynamics increase the level of complexity, the associated phenomena are often overlooked and need to be explored. In this perspective, we discuss a selection of recent developments of dynamic solid-state materials across material classes, outlining opportunities and fundamental and methodological challenges for their advancement toward innovative functionality and applications.

Abstract
Small-scale robots (SSRs) have emerged as promising and versatile tools in various biomedical, sensing, decontamination, and manipulation applications, as they are uniquely capable of performing tasks at small length scales. With the miniaturization of robots from the macroscale to millimeter-, micrometer-, and nanometer-scales, the viscous and surface forces, namely adhesive forces and surface tension have become dominant. These forces significantly impact motion efficiency. Surface engineering of robots with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic functionalization presents a brand-new pathway to overcome motion resistance and enhance the ability to target and regulate robots for various tasks. This review focuses on the current progress and future perspectives of SSRs with hydrophilic and hydrophobic modifications (including both tethered and untethered robots). The study emphasizes the distinct advantages of SSRs, such as improved maneuverability and reduced drag forces, and outlines their potential applications. With continued innovation, rational surface engineering is expected to endow SSRs with exceptional mobility and functionality, which can broaden their applications, enhance their penetration depth, reduce surface fouling, and inhibit bacterial adhesion.

Abstract
Designable morphology and predictable properties are the most challenging goals in material engineering. Features such as shape, size, porosity, agglomeration ratio significantly affect the final properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and can be regulated throughout synthesis parameters but require a deep understanding of the mechanisms of MOFs formation. Herein, we systematically summarize the effects of the individual synthesis factors, such as pH of reaction mixture, including acidic or basic character of modulators, temperature, solvents types, surfactants type and content and ionic liquids on the morphology of growing MOFs. We identified main mechanisms of MOFs' growth leading to different morphology of final particles and next systematically discuss the effect of miscellaneous parameters on MOFs morphology based on the main mechanisms related to the nucleation, growth and formation of final MOFs structure, including coordination modulation, protonation/deprotonation acting and modulation by surfactants or capping agents. The effect of microwaves and ultrasound employment during synthesis is also considered due to their affecting especially nucleation and particles growing steps during MOFs formation.

Abstract
Miniaturization of synthetic micro/nanomotors (MNMs) brings great application prospects but limits their functionalization ability. Here, we report self-fueled metal organic framework (MOF) micromotors that are endowed with capabilities of self-propulsion and antibacterial therapy by their material's intrinsic properties. The spontaneous degradation of the MOF micromotors in water would release their own constituting components of ions which act as fuels to propel themselves by ionic diffusionphoresis with a high energy conversion efficiency. Meanwhile, the metal cations released from the MOF micromotors can also serve as antibacterial reagents to kill Escherichia coli (E. coli) with motion enhanced efficacy, which could significantly accelerate the wound closure in a bacterially infected wound model in vivo. Our work provides a general guidance for constructing functional MNMs by taking advantage of the motors' own materials to achieve self-propulsion and on-demand task assignments, which would promote future development of highly integrated micro/nanorobotic systems at micro/nanoscale.

Abstract
Micro-/nanorobots (MNRs) can be autonomously propelled on demand in complex biological environments and thus may bring revolutionary changes to biomedicines. Fluorescence has been widely used in real-time imaging, chemo-/biosensing, and photo-(chemo-) therapy. The integration of MNRs with fluorescence generates fluorescent MNRs with unique advantages of optical trackability, on-the-fly environmental sensitivity, and targeting chemo-/photon-induced cytotoxicity. This review provides an up-to-date overview of fluorescent MNRs. After the highlighted elucidation about MNRs of various propulsion mechanisms and the introductory information on fluorescence with emphasis on the fluorescent mechanisms and materials, we systematically illustrate the design and preparation strategies to integrate MNRs with fluorescent substances and their biomedical applications in imaging-guided drug delivery, intelligent on-the-fly sensing and photo-(chemo-) therapy. In the end, we summarize the main challenges and provide an outlook on the future directions of fluorescent MNRs. This work is expected to attract and inspire researchers from different communities to advance the creation and practical application of fluorescent MNRs on a broad horizon.

The surface assessment via grid evaluation
(SuAVE)
software was developed to account for the effect of curvature in the
calculations of structural properties of chemical interfaces regardless
of the chemical composition, asymmetry, and level of atom coarseness.
It employs differential geometry techniques, enabling the representation
of chemical surfaces as fully differentiable. In this article, we
present novel developments of SuAVE to treat closed surfaces and complex
cavity shapes. These developments expand the repertoire of curvature-dependent
analyses already available in the previous version of SuAVE (e.g., area per lipid, density profiles, membrane thickness,
deuterium-order parameters, volume per lipid, and surface curvature
angle) to include new functionalities applicable to soft matter (e.g., sphericity, average radius, principal moment of inertia,
and roundness) and crystalline porous materials (e.g., pore diameter, internal void volume, total area, and the total
void volume of the unit cell structure). SuAVE can accurately handle
chemical systems with high and low atom density as demonstrated for
two distinct chemical systems: the lipid A vesicle and a set of selected
metal–organic frameworks. The SuAVE software v2.0 is fully
parallel and benefits from a compiler that supports OpenMP. SuAVE

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Micromotor and nanomotor particles are typically made using dense solid particles that can sediment or be trapped in confined flow environments. Creation of much larger motors should be possible if a very low-density system is used with sufficient strength to carry liquid and still experience propulsive motion. Light, dense millimotors should also be able to deform more than dense solid ones in constrictions. EXPERIMENTS Millimotors are created from permeable capsules of bacterial cellulose that are coated with catalse-containing metal-organic frameworks, enabling reactive propulsion in aqueous hydrogen peroxide. The motion of the motors is quantified using particle tracking and the deformation is measured using microcapillary compression and flow through confined channels. FINDINGS Two different propulsion mechanisms are dominant depending on the motor surface chemistry: oxygen bubbles are expelled from hydrophilic millimotors, driving motion via recoil force and buoyancy. Hydrophobic millimotors remain attached to growing bubbles and move by buoyancy alone. Despite their large size, the low-density capsules compress to pass through contractions that would impede and be blocked by solid motors. The sparse structure but relatively large size of the motors enables them to transport significant volumes of liquid using minimal solid mass as a motor support structure.

Abstract
Nowadays, nano-/micro-motors are considered as powerful tools in different areas ranging from cleaning all types of contaminants, to development of Targeted drug delivery systems and diagnostic activities. Therefore, the development and application of nano-/micro-motors based on metal-organic frameworks with nanozyme activity (abbreviated as: MOF-NZs) in biomedical activities have received much interest recently. Therefore, after investigating the catalytic properties and applications of MOF-NZs in the treatment of cancer, this study intends to point out their key role in the production of biocompatible nano-/micro-motors. Since reducing the toxicity of MOF-NZ nano-/micro-motors can pave the way for medical activities, this article examines the methods of making biocompatible nanomotors to address the benefits and drawbacks of the required propellants. In the following, an analysis of the amplified directional motion of MOF-NZ nano-/micro-motors under physiological conditions is presented, which can improve the motor behaviors in the propulsion function, conductivity, targeting, drug release, and possible elimination. Meanwhile, by explaining the use of MOF-NZ nano-/micro-motors in the treatment of cancer through the possible synergy of nanomotors with different therapies, it was revealed that MOF-NZ nano-/micro-motors can be effective in the treatment of cancer. Ultimately, by analyzing the potential challenges of MOF-NZ nano-/micro-motors in the treatment of cancers, we hope to encourage researchers to develop MOF-NZs-based nanomotors, in addition to opening up new ideas to address ongoing problems.

Abstract
Shape-programmable hydrogel-based soft actuators that can adaptively respond to external stimuli are of paramount significance for the development of bioinspired aquatic smart soft robots. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of near-infrared (NIR) light-driven hydrogel actuators through in situ photopolymerization of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels loaded with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) onto the surface of the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) thin film. The MOFs can not only function as an excellent photothermal nanotransducer but also accelerate the adsorption/desorption of water due to their porous nanostructure, which speeds up the response rate of the actuators. Shape-programmable hydrogel actuators are fabricated by tailoring the patterning of PDMS thin film, and thus different shape-morphing modes such as directional bending and chiral twisting are observed under the NIR light irradiations. As the proof-of-concept demonstrations, an artificial hand, biomimetic mimosa, and flower are conceptualized with light-driven MOF-containing hydrogel actuators. Interestingly, we are able to achieve an octopus-inspired light-driven soft swimmer upon cyclic NIR illumination due to the fast photoresponsiveness of as-prepared hydrogel actuators. This work can offer insights for fabricating programmable and reconfigurable smart aquatic soft actuators, thus shining a light into their potential applications in emerging fields including soft robots, biomedical devices, and beyond.

Abstract
Colloidal micromotors can autonomously propel due to their broken symmetry that leads to unbalanced local mechanical forces. Most commonly, micromotors are synthesized to possess a Janus structure or its variants, having two components distinct in shape, composition, or surface joined together on opposite sides. Here, we report on an alternative approach for creating micromotors, where microcrystals of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with various polyhedral shapes are propelled under an AC electric field. In these cases, symmetry breaking is realized by orienting the polyhedral particles in a unique direction to generate uneven electrohydrodynamic flow. The particle orientations are controlled by a delicate competition between the electric and gravitational forces exerted on the particle, which we rationalize using experiments and a theoretical model. Furthermore, by leveraging the MOF types and shapes, or surface properties, we show that the propulsion of MOF motors can be tuned or reversed. Because of the flexibility in designing MOFs and their one-step scalable synthesis, our strategy is simple yet versatile for making well-defined functional micromotors.

Abstract
Two novel amphiphiles, N-(3-nitrophenyl)stearamide (MANA) and N,N′-(4-nitro-1,3-phenylene)distearamide (OPANA), were synthesized by reacting nitroanilines with one or two equivalents of stearic acid. We investigated how the molecular structures of these compounds influenced the characteristics of a self-propelled camphor disk placed on a monolayer of the synthesized amphiphiles. Three types of motion were observed at different surface pressures (Π): continuous motion (Π < 4 mN m−1), deceleration (4 mN ≤ Π ≤ 20 mN m−1), and no motion (Π > 20 mN m−1). The speed of the motion of the camphor disks was inversely related to Π for both MANA and OPANA at the temperatures tested, when Π increased in the respective molecular layers under compression. The spectroscopic evidence from UV-Vis, NMR, and ESI-TOF-MS revealed that the dependence of the speed of the motion on Π originates from the intermolecular interactions that are present in the monolayers. This study suggests that it is possible to control the self-propelled motion by manipulating contributing factors at the molecular level.

Abstract
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) play a key role in the development of tumor metastasis. It will be a big step forward for CTC application as a reliable clinical liquid biopsy marker to be able to identify the captured CTCs while achieving a high capture efficiency within one analytical system. Herein, in this work, a stimuli-responsive and rhodamine 6G (Rho 6G)-entrapped fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF) probe, named MOF-Rho 6G-DNA, was designed to capture, detect, and subsequently identify CTCs from blood samples of cancer patients. The probe was fabricated by modifying the epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) hairpin DNA aptamer with Rho 6G enclosed and an Arm-DNA-attached UiO-66-NH2 MOF by sequence complementation. CTCs could be captured by the EpCAM hairpin DNA on the probe; as a result, Rho 6G loaded in the probe was released, and the number of CTCs was positively related to the concentration of released Rho 6G. An excellent correlation of fluorescence intensities with CTC numbers was obtained from 2 to 500 cells/mL. More importantly, the MOF-Rho 6G-DNA probe simultaneously realized rapid identification of the captured cells within 30 min by only relying on the residue Rho 6G in the MOF cavity. The captured target cells can be conveniently released from the probe using the complementary DNA sequence. These performance features of the probe were further verified by blood samples from patients of various types of tumor.

Abstract
Light-powered fuel-free colloidal motors possess significant potential for practical applications ranging from nanomedicine to environmental remediation. However, current light-powered colloidal motors often require the incorporation of expensive metals or high concentrations of toxic chemical fuels, which is a severe limitation for their practical applications. Integrating highly ordered and porous materials with a large surface area into colloidal motors is a promising strategy for upsurging their self-propelled speed and adsorption, which will benefit many applications. Here, highly efficient, fuel-free, and light-activated metal organic framework (MOF)-3-trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate Janus colloidal motors with a hierarchical morphology are reported. These colloidal motors can be driven by UV or visible light, with a self-propelled speed tuned by the light intensity. The speed can be further enhanced by morphology optimization or by the addition of H2O2 as a fuel. The colloidal motors display a superior efficiency in removing heavy metal ions of Hg, which is up to ∼90% within 40 min from the contaminated water, attributed to their high surface area, hierarchical morphology, large number of active sites, and high mobility. This work not only offers a facile approach to incorporate a versatile MOF family into the design of fuel-free and light-powered Janus colloidal motors, but also demonstrates their potential for real-life applications such as environmental remediation.

Abstract
Small molecules ranging from organic to inorganic systems have been reported as stabilizing agents for collagen. Various transition metal complexes have been utilized as tanning agent. However, as per the environmental norms issued by various regulatory agencies, the presence of certain metals such as Cr, Fe, Al, Zr and Ti in leather has been restricted to minimal amount (50 ppm), an unsurmountable task. To overcome the above issue and find an alternative tanning system, here in this study, we have reported the interaction of two water-soluble zinc-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), i.e., ZnPV (1) and ZnPA (2), with collagen using various spectroscopic techniques. Fibrillation kinetics studies showed that a significant delay in fibril formation with Zn-MOFs treated collagen was observed compared to the collagen untreated/ treated with individual ligands and metal salt. Circular dichroism studies show that at a low weight ratio (1:0.2 and 1:1::Collagen: MOF), no perturbation in the triple helical structure was observed, while at higher weight ratio (1:4), denaturation of collagen occurs. FT-IR studies showed that no perturbation was observed in the amide backbone in MOF-treated collagen. Differential scanning calorimetric data revealed that both Zn-MOFs increased the thermal denaturation temperature by 22 ± 2 °C compared to the collagen treated with individual entities. The viscosity of collagen rises with the increase in the concentration of Zn-MOFs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the use of the metal-organic framework as a stabilizing agent for collagen structure and might help in exploring the MOFs as potential tanning agents.

Abstract
Most forms of biomatter are ephemeral, which means they transform or deteriorate after a certain time. From this perspective, implantable healthcare devices designed for temporary treatments should exhibit the ability to degrade and either blend in with healthy tissues, or be cleared from the body with minimal disruption after accomplishing their designated tasks. This topic is currently being investigated in the field of biomedical micro- and nanoswimmers. These tiny devices have the ability to move through fluids by converting physical or chemical energy into motion. Several architectures of these devices have been designed to mimic the motion strategies of nature's motile microorganisms and cells. Due to their motion abilities, these devices have been proposed as minimally invasive tools for precision healthcare applications. Hence, a natural progression in this field is to produce motile structures that can adopt, or even surpass, similar transient features as biological systems. The fate of small-scale swimmers after accomplishing their therapeutic mission is critical for the successful translation of small-scale swimmers' technologies into clinical applications. In this review, recent research efforts are summarized on the topic of biodegradable micro- and nanoswimmers for biomedical applications, with a focus on targeted therapeutic delivery.

Abstract
Microscale self-propelled robots show great promise in the biomedical field and are the focus of many researchers. These tiny devices, which move and navigate by themselves, are typically based on inorganic microstructures that are not biodegradable and potentially toxic, often using toxic fuels or elaborate external energy sources, which limits their real-world applications. One potential solution to these issues is to go back to nature. Here, the authors use high-speed Aqua Sperm micromotors obtained from North African catfish (Clarias gariepinus, B. 1822) to destroy bacterial biofilm. These Aqua Sperm micromotors use water-induced dynein ATPase catalyzed adenosine triphosphate (ATP) degradation as biocompatible fuel to trigger their fast speed and snake-like undulatory locomotion that facilitate biofilm destruction in less than one minute. This efficient biofilm destruction is due to the ultra-fast velocity as well as the head size of Aqua Sperm micromotors being similar to bacteria, which facilitates their entry to and navigation within the biofilm matrix. In addition, the authors demonstrate the real-world application of Aqua Sperm micromotors by destroying biofilms that had colonized medical and laboratory tubing. The implemented system extends the biomedical application of Aqua Sperm micromotors to include hybrid robots for fertilization or cargo tasks.

Abstract
Ubiquitous pollution by microplastics is causing significant deleterious effects on marine life and human health through the food chain and has become a big challenge for the global ecosystem. It is of great urgency to find a cost-efficient and biocompatible material to remove microplastics from the environment. Mimicking basic characteristics of the adhesive chemistry practiced by marine mussels, adhesive polydopamine (PDA)@Fe3 O4 magnetic microrobots (MagRobots) are prepared by coating Fe3 O4 nanoparticles with a polymeric layer of dopamine via one-step self-polymerization. In addition, lipase is loaded on the PDA@Fe3 O4 MagRobots' surface to perform microplastic enzymatic degradation. The synthesized MagRobots, which are externally triggered by transversal rotating magnetic field, have the capacity to clear away the targeted microplastics due to their strong sticky characteristics. With the adhesive PDA@Fe3 O4 MagRobots on their surfaces, the microplastics can be navigated along an arbitrarily predefined path by a rotating field and removed using a directional magnetic field. Such adhesive MagRobots are envisioned to be used in swarms to remove microplastics from aqueous environments.

Abstract
The single-metallic coordination networks (CNs), simultaneously exhibiting temperature-dependent lifetime (TDLT) and emission band shift (TDEBS), are desirable for application in luminescent thermometers with high accuracy and reliability in a large temperature range. Nonetheless, up to date, there are no reports on such kinds of materials due to the lack of in-depth understanding of the origin of TDLT and TDEBS at a molecule level, being critical for exploiting a universal approach to design a dual-parametric CN phosphorescent thermometer (CN-PT). Herein, we have constructed a thermoresponsive CN [Cu2(L1)Br2]∞ (IAM21-1, L1 = N1,N6-di(pyridin-3-yl)adipamide) via a flexible-ligand-implanted strategy. The TDLT and TDEBS properties of IAM21-1 enable it to be applied as a single-metallic dual-parametric CN-PT in 50-500 K, which is the widest temperature range reported so far. The combination of structure analysis and DFT calculations demonstrates that the redshift of the emission band upon the decreasing temperature originates from the reversible skeleton-shrinkage-triggered narrower band gap. This work has unveiled the origin of TDLT and TDEBS properties and proposed an efficient strategy for designing dual-parametric CN-PTs.

Abstract
Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a kind of nonlinear optical phenomenon which has been widely used in optical devices, and factors influencing its signal are very complex. Here, taking advantage of excellent structural designability and overcoming the limitations of various coordinations of lanthanide metals, for the first time a series of lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with one particular ligand were synthesized and structurally characterized to study the interference of the SHG signal. The optical performance including single-photon fluorescence and SHG was collected and analyzed. It is found that all 13 kinds of Ln-MOFs can be divided into 2 crystal configurations by their individual space groups and Ln-MOFs with coordinated metal atoms from La to Tb possessing the noncentrosymmetric C2 space group exhibit the SHG property, the intensity of which depends on the type of metal atoms, the pumping wavelength, and the size of the single-crystal particles. This is the first time that the relationship between the nonlinear optical properties and the structure, metal atoms, pumping wavelength, crystal size of the whole series of Ln-MOFs is studied systematically, providing a lot of interesting results and enriching the research scope of nonlinear optics and materials science.

Abstract
A series of lanthanide coordination polymers [LnL(H2O)2] n [Ln = Pr (1), Nd (2), Sm (3), Eu (4), and Gd (5), H3L = N-(4-carboxy-benzyl)iminodiacetic acid] was hydrothermally prepared and structurally characterized. All the five compounds have been confirmed as 3D Ln-CPs with one-dimensional helical tunnels composed of four helical chains, although there are different coordination geometries around Ln3+. Enantiomeric helixes in 1-3, and absolute left-handed and right-handed helical chains in 4 and 5, respectively, lead to different tunnel spaces. Their conformations can also be featured by different space groups and unit cell dimensions. Photoluminescence measurement on 3 and 4 show characteristic emission peaks of Sm3+ and Eu3+ ions, respectively. The low-temperature heat capacity of 1-4 has been investigated in the temperature range of 1.9-300 K. Their heat capacity values are nearly equal below 10 K and display a crossover with the value order C p,m(2) > C p,m(1) ≈ C p,m(4) > C p,m(3) above 10 K. The measured heat capacities have been fitted, and the corresponding thermodynamic functions were consequently calculated based on the fitting parameters. The standard molar entropies at 298.15 K have been determined to be (415.71 ± 4.16), (451.32 ± 4.51), (308.53 ± 3.09), and (407.62 ± 4.08) J·mol-1·K-1 for 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively.

Abstract
Pumps and motors are essential components of the world as we know it. From the complex proteins that sustain our cells, to the mechanical marvels that power industries, much we take for granted is only possible because of pumps and motors. Although molecular pumps and motors have supported life for eons, it is only recently that chemists have made progress toward designing and building artificial forms of the microscopic machinery present in nature. The advent of artificial molecular machines has granted scientists an unprecedented level of control over the relative motion of components of molecules through the development of kinetically controlled, away-from-thermodynamic equilibrium chemistry. We outline the history of pumps and motors, focusing specifically on the innovations that enable the design and synthesis of the artificial molecular machines central to this Perspective. A key insight connecting biomolecular and artificial molecular machines is that the physical motions by which these machines carry out their function are unambiguously in mechanical equilibrium at every instant. The operation of molecular motors and pumps can be described by trajectory thermodynamics, a theory based on the work of Onsager, which is grounded on the firm foundation of the principle of microscopic reversibility. Free energy derived from thermodynamically non-equilibrium reactions kinetically favors some reaction pathways over others. By designing molecules with kinetic asymmetry, one can engineer potential landscapes to harness external energy to drive the formation and maintenance of geometries of component parts of molecules away-from-equilibrium, that would be impossible to achieve by standard synthetic approaches.

Manipulation and navigation of micro
and nanoswimmers in different
fluid environments can be achieved by chemicals, external fields,
or even motile cells. Many researchers have selected magnetic fields
as the active external actuation source based on the advantageous
features of this actuation strategy such as remote and spatiotemporal
control, fuel-free, high degree of reconfigurability, programmability,
recyclability, and versatility. This review introduces fundamental
concepts and advantages of magnetic micro/nanorobots (termed here
as “MagRobots”) as well as basic knowledge of magnetic
fields and magnetic materials, setups for magnetic manipulation, magnetic
field configurations, and symmetry-breaking strategies for effective
movement. These concepts are discussed to describe the interactions
between micro/nanorobots and magnetic fields. Actuation mechanisms
of flagella-inspired MagRobots (i.e., corkscrew-like motion and traveling-wave
locomotion/ciliary stroke motion) and surface walkers (i.e., surface-assisted
motion), applications of magnetic fields in other propulsion approaches,
and magnetic stimulation of micro/nanorobots beyond motion are provided
followed by fabrication techniques for (quasi-)spherical, helical,
flexible, wire-like, and biohybrid MagRobots. Applications of MagRobots
in targeted drug/gene delivery, cell manipulation, minimally invasive
surgery, biopsy, biofilm disruption/eradication, imaging-guided delivery/therapy/surgery,
pollution removal for environmental remediation, and (bio)sensing
are also reviewed. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives
for the development of magnetically powered miniaturized motors are
discussed.

Abstract
The H2S stability of a range of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was systematically assessed by first-principles calculations. The most likely degradation mechanism was first determined and we identified the rate constant of the degradation reaction as a reliable descriptor for characterizing the H2S stability of MOFs. A qualitative H2S stability ranking was thus established for the list of investigated materials. Structure-stability relationships were further envisaged considering several variables including the nature of the linkers and their grafted functional groups, the pore size, the nature of metal sites, and the presence/nature of coordinatively unsaturated sites. This knowledge enabled the anticipation of the H2S stability of one prototypical MOF, e.g., MIL-91(Ti), which has been previously proposed as a good candidate for CO2 capture. This computational strategy enables an accurate and easy handling assessment of the H2S stability of MOFs and offers a solid alternative to experimental characterizations that require the manipulation of a highly toxic and corrosive molecule.
