Neutron Scattering Studies of Heterogeneous Catalysis

Experimental Evidences on Magnetism-Covalent Bonding Interplay in Structural Properties of Solids and during Chemisorption

Valence electrons are one of the main players in solid catalysts and in catalytic reactions, since they are involved in several correlated phenomena like chemical bonding, magnetism, chemisorption, and bond activation. This is particularly true in the case of solid catalysts containing d-transition metals, which exhibit a wide range of magnetic phenomena, from paramagnetism to collective behaviour. Indeed, the electrons of the outer d-shells are, on one hand, involved in the formation of bonds within the structure of a catalyst and on its surface, and, on the other, they are accountable for the magnetic properties of the material. For this reason, the relationship between magnetism and heterogeneous catalysis has been a source of great interest since the mid-20th century. The subject has gained a lot of attention in the last decade, thanks to the orbital engineering of quantum spin-exchange interactions and to the widespread application of external magnetic fields as boosting tools in several catalytic reactions. The topic is discussed here through experimental examples and evidences of the interplay between magnetism and covalent bonding in the structure of solids and during the chemisorption process. Covalent bonding is discussed since it represents one of the strongest contributions to bonds encountered in materials.

Molecular specificity in neutron imaging: the case of hydrogen adsorption in metal organic frameworks

Neutron imaging is the technique of choice for a number of in situ and operando applications, where a high penetration power is required. White-beam neutron imaging and energy-resolved Bragg edge imaging are successful techniques, the former for the detection of specific elements characterized by strong neutron attenuation and the latter for studying crystal structures. Here we discuss the capabilities of energy-selective neutron imaging taking advantage of the incoherent and inelastic scattering interactions in hydrogenous materials, as a way to obtain molecular-specific information about the composition of a given sample. While few examples from the available literature are discussed, a worked example is presented based on new experimental data on molecular-hydrogen adsorption and conversion in the HKUST-1 metal organic framework.

Exploring the length scales, timescales and chemistry of challenging materials (Part 2)

This themed issue explores the different length and timescales that determine the physics and chemistry of a variety of key of materials, explored from the perspective of a wide range of disciplines, including physics, chemistry materials science, Earth science and biochemistry. The topics discussed include catalysis, chemistry under extreme conditions, energy materials, amorphous and liquid structure, hybrid organic materials and biological materials. The issue is in two parts, with this second set of contributions exploring hybrid organic materials, catalysis low-dimensional and graphitic materials, biological materials and naturally occurring, super-hard material as well as dynamic high pressure and new developments in imaging techniques pressure. In situ real-time neutron imaging of gaseous H2 adsorption and D2 exchange on carbon-supported Pd catalysts

We use in situ neutron imaging to observe the adsorption/absorption of hydrogen within a packed catalyst bed of a Pd/C catalyst at a spatial and temporal resolution of ∼430 μm and a ∼9 s respectively. Additionally, the H2/D2 exchange process across the catalyst bed is followed in real time.
